As I said it's 230 and as I have been mentioning special guest right now with me happy to welcome Elizabeth Marsh who is the director of the scape Southwest Colorado accelerator program for entrepreneurs I get that right yes thank you for having me on thank you I've been practicing that one. Well it's good to have you out Elizabeth and as as I like to do on Wednesday afternoon in the afternoon blend. Mostly a lot from the nonprofit community but otherwise a greater. Community of organizations doing great work in our listening area and. Something timely going on and I know right now skate has something really timely happening in terms of an application deadline yes right now Scape is looking for companies to work with and 2020 so what we do is we help either brand new business ideas or established businesses that are looking to grow our expand we work with them for about 6 months to help them get started and then connect them to the different type of financing that they might need and sense as angel investment or small business loans so that they can grow so maybe just for the listenership that may have never heard that acronym for. Kind of give give a broad brush of what Scape is Ok so and that's 6 years ago some local economic development groups and private angel investors wanted to start tackling how do we create more businesses that will create more jobs and Southwest Colorado you know traditionally we have a lot of tourism based jobs in the area which are weather dependent seasonal fluctuations and we need more high growth businesses that provide higher wages so that people can support their families here and so scapegoats for and like all good economic development groups we have quite an acronym of a name and so we work with local businesses for about 6 months we have a lot of really cool. Good mentors and technical assistance providers that help shape the business plan look at different paths of growth what they might need and then we also have an angel investment fund side where we raise the money that the companies need to get started. And this is kind of a model entrepreneurial related economic development I know Northwest New Mexico has a Do they still have a good program down at center in college you know I'm not 100 percent sure traditionally accelerators tend to be kind of west coast. State and they're usually kind of sponsored by large venture capital funds that are looking for the next big deal but we locally have an accelerator with an economic development focus of working with local people in our community that want to be here that want to be employers and create opportunities for other people and so we've found that the community driven aspect of it is what makes the mentors donate their time and investors come to the table right so they see a local the local acts Absolutely and so are the investors necessarily local and primarily all of our investors are local we've worked with about 31 businesses in the last 6 years and we've helped those companies raise $20000000.00 And so all of that money has gone towards local business development services and to help pay for the $122.00 jobs we've created Wow that's it's a lot of fun really it must be rewarding work yes so some of those businesses just some examples for people to con or wrap their minds around that have been supported by this great program so they're all over the place all different industries we've had several software companies that we've worked with such as get prime coding analytics and how they were acquired. Just going to say get prime What a great example of a company that just. With with scape support just skyrocketed now sold in just a just a huge success at the Fortunately they're still. Located in Durango correct yes yes they still have a small office here and one of the successes of that is it shows what we can do here and so it shows other businesses that you can be successful in this area we have mentors we have access to the capital that you need other software companies are muni revs and lodging rats and she works in the sales tax compliance and air b.n. B. Compliance so the communities can have more tax revenue she's doing really well she'll be moving into a new building downtown Maine entering assume with 20 employees. We've also got product companies we work with such as impact vendors they have a new design of a bow and dock fender and they've been selling out every trade show they go to and they're currently kind of upping their capacity to work with more wholesalers next year and they've got moto Burley he manufacturers camping trailers that people can take with small vehicles entering most backwoods areas. We've got a cider company that we're working with on getting some cider produced so it's we work with a broad range of businesses and so that's what I'm really hoping to do is encourage everyone to go to our website which is go skate dot org learn a little more about us look at our application and see if you might benefit by being in our program next year grade and again the deadline is January 15th and so the applications pretty easy it's just on our website we just want to know you know what you're doing what you need help with how you're going to make money what your plans are for this business and and then we'll put it in front of some some of our investors and mentors and we'll see if there's a good fit so is there if they're selected I assume there's coaching then for their coaching along the way and getting their business plan together or do they need to have some of that really. You know I encourage everyone to just apply because you never know what connections might be made. We've worked with everything from businesses that are an idea on a napkin to established businesses that want to grow our businesses that we ended up working with them to go a completely different direction so we just kind of need to know what people are doing and what they need help with and then we take it from there fantastic if you just tuned in I'm speaking with Elizabeth Marsh she's the director of the scape program Southwest Colorado accelerator program for entrepreneurs you keep getting it right I'll try spelling it has no eyes open. We're going to take a quick break and we'll come back and speak a little bit more with Elizabeth about her program in the application deadline coming up this is music from Concrete Blonde. Little. Visit from Concrete Blonde with true. To me game here on the Wednesday afternoon blend speaking with Elizabeth Marsh from the skate program here in southwest Colorado and there's an important deadline coming up if you're an entrepreneur if you have a great idea or that's even more than just on the back of a napkin Scape is a great way to to get your your idea supported by the skate program in Elizabeth the director that program we're talking a little bit during the break about the investor community and you know you think about angel investors or for me anyway I think oh the Bay Area or the East Coast and like you said earlier you know our region actually has a decent number of investors right now yes we're very lucky in this area that we attract a lot of retired retirees that want to live here life yeah but they still want to give back and be involved in the business community so what better way than helping the next generation grow their business and help them through the life cycle of another business and so a lot of those people are also angel investors in the area that can create beauty to the scape investment funds and provide at the seed capital that the businesses we work with need so a lot of what scape tries to do is also enhance the whole entrepreneurial eco system in the area to make sure that we have resources for businesses trying to get started but that we also have access to the money that people need to get started because we understand it is very risky to find the capital that you need to start a business small business loans might not make sense but some businesses outside money does make sense and those are the ones we try to work with that's great and then so say I'm a person out there and I have an idea in a kind of a bit of a plan that I think is really great and I decided to apply what happens what's the application. It's what's the selection process and then what happens once someone might be selected so how it works is on our website which is go scaped dot org is a very easy application form and so it's just going to ask some basic questions about what your business is what you need help with and where you see it going so we'll take applications and tell January 15th 2020 and then we'll go through our internal review process see what mentors we have in industries that people need help with and then we'll set up some interviews probably February of next year and then we'll select the companies that it makes sense to work with and we kind of run a program from about March through September it's about 4 to 8 hours a week where we will bring in different advisers to meet with the businesses to see what they need and how to help them and then at the end of the program is a showcase where we present our businesses to the world and they kind of get launched and started and for some that means raising all the money that they need others it means just introducing themselves to customers and then we continue to help companies as they grow throughout their life cycle while that which is something I mean it's not just Ok you're done fly out of the nest they get ongoing support Yes definitely so how is. An organization supported also just with some of those investor funds or how Scape is an organization supported so we run scape through 2 arms we have a nonprofit arm that's funded from some state and federal grants 1st Southwest bank has been a huge supporter of rural entrepreneurs and we're very thankful for their continued support of the program and also some local donors that support us and then every year we raise an investment fund and scape also has a stake in that investment fund so when one of our companies has an exit and does well then the nonprofit side as able to keep going that's great sounds like it's a really well thought out model. You know so yeah we kind of joke you know that we're young business Yes well right so we reconfigure how we're doing everything everything so often also right and so I mentioned you have an economic development background. More finance and operate Yeah that works well for the u.s. It's I think the thing I enjoy the most is all the different people I get to work with you know the mentors are so dedicated to giving back and helping the companies and then all the entrepreneurs they've got such good ideas and great energy and it's fun to help them get to their goal I would imagine yeah yeah who needs kids when you get you know. Well it's so great thanks so much what a wonderful program my p.c. You coming out in sharing more with our listeners about this gay program I imagine a lot of folks of heard about it but kind of like haven't quite fully wrap their brains around what it is so I hopefully this was helpful in getting people to that next level of understanding as well as hopefully maybe thinking about applying Yes So I encourage everyone to apply kind of got nothing to lose let's see what's out there and if we can help you and the Web site once again is go scape dot org Go scaped dot org Well thanks so much Elizabeth for coming out and him great work I have to say seeing it fun to hear about some of the success stories and all the great work in a short 6 years yes.
