Reporter rio is known for its culture, history and city, in this city, there are over 800 sprawling communities known as favellas, where nearly 2 million live in poverty and the fear of violent crime. This is one of rios notorious favellas. A stronghold for gangs and drug police call it a war zone. With security, we traveled into one of the few favellas considered safe enough to enter. The few places considered safe enough to enter. Some of rios favellas are literally cities within cities. Home to poverty and this neighborhood lives under the statue. Home to more than 800,000 people. This favella is under police control. This commander tells us police in the community are now working together here. Even in the post pacified favellas, people are unarmed. Life in santa marta has him proved, but many ask at what cost. Dozens of favellas are under control, but the effort to bring peace can come with violence. Killed as police swept through her favella. She says her son was an innocent victim of aggressive policing.
