A moment of silence in new york city which is when the second plane hit the twin towers and all the loved ones of 9 11 victims are coming together today to mark the anniversary of the terror attacks. We have additional music and readings to mark the milestone anniversary at ground zero but for the most part traditions are the same and we will listen mary both. We will see ceremonies like this happening not only in new york but across the country today as remember and look back what happened 15 years ago. You saw some of the emotions on the faces of people in the crowd. It brings back vivid memories especially for the people who are in new york city and had to experience this years ago. People say attendance has been dwindling over the years as the initial shock of fades a little bit but certainly a big turnout. Not only ceremonies in new york and washington and rocks. That will start in two hours. Hundreds of firefighters and others will honor firefighters who died in the attacks with the stair climb at the amphitheater and it starts at 7 30. Both candidates have ties to new york city. Trump is a native new yorker and clinton was a senator in new york at the time of the attacks on both agreed to stop campaigning today to abide by the tradition of putting politics aside on the somber years since colorado was devastated by floods. The historic floods of 2013 claim 10 lives, wiped out roads and destroyed towns. Recovery from the floods has been a tough journey. Longmont was one of the areas longest hit and as they remember the devastation but focus on resiliency. Its something i will never get over. It will always come back. September 2013. Its an anniversary you remember but also one you are proud of. Three years after devastating floods put colorado on hold cities like longmont are looking back with a different perspective, one that makes them proud of what was overcome. Thats the longmont i know. We are a determined bunch of. And we will make it happen. For the most part longmont has recovered. Thats saying a lot considering reshape bike paths and restore essential services and thats just naming a few. With this out of the way the public works director says the focus is resiliency. Not just resiliency in the project but resiliency and ourselves. Several years later the emotions and memories are vivid for him who grew up here. It was the parents of my classmates that were flooded and came up to me and said they all, stay on this and dont let us down. That doesnt go away. The city was determined and it paid off. Recovery expected to take up to 10 years was completed in half the time. We think there are lessons to be learned about how longmont is recovering that can be replicated in the country. With her covering nearly complete the path to resiliency begins at longmont remembers the floods and the strength make longmont stronger than it ever would have been. In longmont, jessica oh 9news. Great getting together and i love that. A tricky question i didnt think about until today. What is faster, and ostrich or a camel . An interesting question of people will soon find out this upcoming weekend. Some could no hold on as a camel and ostrich bridge of spies but as crazy as it looks its nothing new for folks in Virginia City. Its an event thats gone on for over 60 years and people dont just come to see who has a leg up but organizers say it has a great story behind it. The local newspaper 57 years ago made a fictitious story up about camel races in Virginia City and the were no camel races. The word got out and they brought a camel up from california. Fascinating. Of false newspaper article and someone actually brought a camel to this event. Around 10,000 people show up to the race and it draws a big crowd because its so unique. It takes place throughout the weekend. Just looking at the ostriches carrying people around on chariots. If i had to bet between the two i would say the ostrich woodwind. Very good. Reporter you have decorated yours with what style are you calling it . Its a modern glamorous style. Reporter whats the difference between the living room and a b mac on a woman cave is specifically for the woman of the house. A place where she can go by herself to breathe and relax and do whatever she wants or invite girlfriends and for a glass of wine. It is her space and the kids is not allowed in and the husband is not allowed in and thats the difference. Reporter why is it important to have separate spaces . Just like the man cave has been popular the last five or 10 years, now women are saying what about us . If you have a bathroom chances are you have some paint peeling in some areas. Its due to the moisture from the shower. I have a situation in my bathroom where the texture started coming off because the shower had water getting on the wall. Most people dont realize that when you have your home, when you painted in the first place they use you are really supposed to use a stronger paint. We will show you how to paint your bathroom so you dont have any peeling or flaking out the paint in the future. Joining me now in the shower a little awkward but necessary is jared from residential bathroom. All the time. Its a common issue. Given the way the tile is set up and the shower overflow condensation continues to be an issue when most homes. The started peeling away from the shower. The shower head here, you are getting a lot of spray coming off in this is a common issue from point to point in her mac it happens all the time and what we want to do is when you see this you want to address it immediately or it will exacerbate and you will have problems where water can get behind the tile and start deteriorating the entire bathroom. Whate and scrape off the loose items, anything you see where its popping off the wall. Water is getting in behind there and that will cause damage further down in the wall which we dont want. We want to address this right away. That it set up and painted and take care of the problem as soon as possible. The first thing we want to do in an area like this in the bathroom when we have this type fill it and clean it up to get the lines filled in. You see where you scraped it, if you just try to go over the top of it with a spray, you will see the lines. Soap will it and let it dry thoroughly. Then sand it. Then spray. Let it dry. Then sand again. Feather it in so it matches the now that jr has refinish the wall i will finish up with painting. Jr suggests using a semi gloss paint in the bathroom because of all the moisture. I use the painter and primary in one. First i taped off the areas that needed it with the painters tape, used an edger quality paintbrush to finish off the quarters and the edges. Then with a dropoff on the floor i used a roller to paint the walls. We also want to stress that almost every expert in the industry will tell you they have different ways of painting and doing finishing work. We would like to hear your advice on how you finish off walls if you dont feel comfortable doing a project you need to get an expert to do it instead. So here is what it looks like before. And her is what it looks like after. Especially with the semi gloss shine. If you like more information just go to 9news. Com. Minimum wage is a hot topic and its going to be on the ballot in colorado this year. 9 News Reporter John Gonzalez has a look at what that means for workers in colorado on this weeks balance of power. One of the many ballot questions coloradans will face this year is around minimum wage. Currently 8. 31, until it reaches 12 an hour by 2020. Heres some history. The u. S. First established a minimum amount of money folks could make an hour a long time ago. 25 cents, equals about 4 an hour today. Colorado set its own minimum wage in 1998, hiked it in 2016 and it changes based on inflation. Now its up to you to make it jump to 12 an hour by 2020. Proponents argue a wage families and workers a chance to get into the middle class. Opponents say raising the minimum wage shouldnt be the same formula across the state. Good morning and welcome to balance of power. Today were talking about minimum age. Im being joined right now by ryne sandberg. Thank you both for being here this morning. Patty, why is the time now . What were seeing is an economy thats growing, its booming. Theres still some factors that the biggest one is wages and so we have a we see wages havent kept up. Were proposing amendment 70 that would essentially raise the wage in a responsible phasedin manner that takes into account both the needs of workers and Business Owners and it would essentially increase following and by 2020 it would reach 12 an hour. Most campaigns calling for 15 an hour, that seems to be the national trend. Why not 12 . Does it not seem like a modest increase . The campaign theyre pushing 12 everywhere. While, yes, there is a booming economy in denver, there is not in rural colorado. Thats why were opposing this. Were not opposing a minimum the way theyre doing it. Theyre being inning the minimum age across the state. The economy in other places are not booming like denver. Pueblo are still in a recession. Metro denver probably could, the rural colorado could not. Thats what governor hickenlooper argued last week on this program, he greece 12 that might work in denver, we figured like he was saying maybe rural areas thats not fair, especially for a farmer, lets say, where the profit margin is low. It was disappointing to see the governors comments last week and i think he needs to study some of the facts about this, because the truth is, of course, were concerned about rural areas and the thing is, is that raising the wage for low wage workers is an economic driver. It puts money in peoples pockets and they spend it in their local communities. If they set a rate metro rate. In fact, we sat down with them in march and filed a couple of our own initiatives, what if we went to 10. 10. The rent has risen 37 since our last minimum wage increase in 2016. Wages have only increased 21 . Dont you have to do something for them to catch up . Gotten the same amount. Were seeing this is, again, the same problem. Its not the problem with raising the wage its how you do it. And youre forcing Rural Communities to pay the same as denver. I i want to bring up this study from seattle out of the university of washington. They found while wages did go up, the workers admitted in that study they may not really give them a chance middle class which is a lot of people argue is the result of minimum wage but they found prices didnt go up that much. Low wage workers in seattle are not employed. It even theyve seen no difference in takehome pay. What tyler doing is equating job loss with hours, so its true, there are there have some restaurant employees in the city of seattle but what were seeing is wangs were when you take into account working fewer hours, their wages still went up 7 relative to the surrounding areas that did not raise their wage and thats still a win for workers. Its not the only solution we need to lift workers out of the state of poverty in colorado but its one step and an important step. Thats not true. Theres a lot of highly paid people in seattle. Dollars in take home pay. At the end of the day is there something better, something that can get you two to agree on how we can help people get closer to the middle class . Were not opposed to the minimum wage being in. Were opposed to the one size fits all. Tyler makes it sound he can use these big numbers, the percentages make it sound scary but what were actually talking about is 300 a week. Thats the take home pay for a minimum wage worker in colorado. Unfortunately, we are out of time. A lot of people will be talking about this one over the next month or so. Patty, tyler, appreciate you. Meet the press is on channel 20 today. Im Jonathan Gonzalez for balance of power. Belen says its going to be hot with high fire danger. She has a final look at weather in just a few minutes. Game day live is back. Thats coming up in just the broncos started off their season just how they ended it last year, beating the panthers 2120. The favorite part about this game was just feeling the excitement in the crowd. I wasnt there. I was just watching it from the could feel through the screen. Our game day live cohost rod mackey and mike klis are here. Good morning to you guys. Gary kubiak said he was surprised about this win because the broncos didnt play well. You turn the ball over three times and you dont win a lot of games. My favorite part of the game was wide left. This game was so physical. Thats the one response ive gotten from the people out there, how hardhitting it was. Big target and now theres a lot of investigation whether the nfl did enough, the officials did must have to protect cam newton did enough to protect cam newton. He has a lot of designed runs and you saw when bradley roby led up on newton because he is a quarterback, and he rolled right over him. Obviously there were some helmet hits and i think the broncos will get fined. I think its because they started hi kubiak talked about it later, he said hes a running back when hes out there like that. You got to treat him like one. Speaking of running backs, our guy looked like a different guy. C. J. Anderson with two touchdowns in this one. Looked fantastic, one rushing, one receiving. He said he was a different player. We saw it on thursday night. Usually when guys get a big contract you worry about them getting lazy, resting on their laurels, not giving it their c. J. Anderson worked hard to prove he was worth that big contract, 6 million a year. Hes lighter and he still is hard to knock off his feet as he was at the second half of last year. He was the offensive hero in this game. Speaking of offense, we didnt talk about the quarterback. Thats because were going to do it moments from now. Game day live is back. Sams there, daves there, well have it all for you coming up in mere moments. Back to you. Its great to see you guys again. Thank you both. Belen, joining us big thank you to all the folks who are joining us on facebook live. Lets take a look at the forecast because we have a red flag warning in effect this afternoon. It goes into effect at noon and going to last threw 7 p. M. , up toward the western slopes, parts of the northern mountains and the foothills. A reminder that the ceremony and concert for colorado remembers starts at 1 p. M. Temperatures will be at 89 if youre looking for meet the press, were airing that on kdkd channel 20. Proud to be a part of this. Great team. Were just a little bit better. Big plays in a game motivate the guys to make those plays and sometimes thats what it
