A big announcement from broncos Peyton Manning. The quarterback announced he is retiring. Our sports insider says he has told the broncos. Mike, how you doing this morning . I am doing great. Time to celebrate a career of one of the greats. Lets talk about this right now. First, whats the next step for peyton in terms of an announcement . When will we actually hear from him . I think they are still putting some plans together, but i think it will be tomorrow. I think the team will probably have a press conference tomorrow. Hes in town. Well, no. He is not in town. So not right now. So we will have to make arrangements to get him in. But i think theyre hoping to get him in tomorrow. Again, those plans are not finalized. And this is a decision that we have been back and forth on for a while. There has been so much speculation either way. Even just yesterday some Football Players were going to retire. Is this a shock to you, mike . No, this was something that was expected. I think really the hints he dropped at the end of the season, first of ball the Bill Belichick where he got micd up where he said this might be my last rodeo. His speech on the podium at the afc championship game where he basically saying goodbye to the fans. He got emotional in his pre team speech to the team the night of the super. He couldnt control. Person. I think that was something to try throw people off. But i think he was 95 certain he was going to retire. Long. It was four weeks. Not even quite four weeks since he played the super bowl that made this lifechanging decision. So well have to ask him tomorrow what he plans on doing next. But im not surprised. It was time for Peyton Manning to hang it up. He goes out in a blaze of glory for winning the super bowl. We have so many more questions for you. Thanks. California is waking up to flooded streets this morning. Heavy rains turned deadly in the northern farther of the state. That same storm system is on its way to colorado. Also, belen will tell us when and where we can expect that storm hit. First 9news reporter vida urbonas with more on the dangerous floods and Power Outages in Northern California. It could be a taste of more to come today. Northern california has seen backtoback storms. Trees left tens of thousands of customers without power. A 48 woman died after a car drove into floodwaters on northbound highway 65 in yuba county last night. Officers say a man drove a car around blockades on the roads, which were closed due flooding. That car was submerged in six feet of water. The man driving was able to get out of the car. The woman inside was not. She was underneath 15 minutes and drowned. The strong el nino pattern brought heavy rain to several areas in california. This video was taken in an area 40 miles north of sacramento. Can you see more flooding streets in that area. And more rain, as we said, expected to hit Northern California today and tomorrow. In the information center, vida urbonas, 9news. All right. Thank you. The snow and rain you see on radar is already falling in the high country. Can you see it there. It will be warm and dry along the front range today with snow and rain in the high country. Front range by tomorrow. Belen de leon joining us now. We are expecting quite the change . Certainly. A big cool down tomorrow. Today is going to be dryer in denver and for most of the front range. In the high country toes, because of that rain and snow that has already started, we will have travel advisories this afternoon. Winter weather advisory in the high country and a red flag warning for southeast colorado. So this advisory goes into effect at 6 00. By the time this storm moves out, we could see from 5 to 10 inches of snowfall. Good news. We get that moisture wherever can. Meanwhile, in southeast california all this area shaded in the hot pink color, thats a red flag warning. This goes into affect at 11 00 a. M. Humidity there 11 . Any rain or snow today is going to fall in higher elevations. Our temperatures are once again going to spring into the upper 60s and low 70s. Its already pretty mild to start in the 30s and 40s. Afternoon a high in the 60s and 70s with lots of sunshine out there right now and blue skies. But we will have those clouds increasing. I will break down the work week forecast in a few. Right now a look at the roads. Good morning. Driving this morning green lights the whole way. Even out of the city. Yesterday traffic was light as well. A couple more people getting out on i70 westbound. Drive times to the tunnel 44 minutes from 6th avenue to u. S. 6. Eastbound around 50 minutes. Now, its eastbound as you head home that we are really going to need to be mindful of adding that extra time. If you are heading out farther than the eisenhower tunnel, heading to vail, a little extra time. Not too bad. It is going to be later on this evening we will be dealing about wet and snowy roadways. So kind of a wintery condition everybody heads home from hitting the mountains all weekend. So, you know, we are going to have to plan a little extra time and definitely be mindful of that weather this afternoon. Jessica and ryan. Thank you, tracy. And dont forget you can listen to cdots mountain travel radio every weekend for traffic conditions on i70 between denver and vail. Up to the minute road conditions. Log on to co trip. Org. And watch traceys report right here. Another big night for donald trump and ted cruz who each 12 states on saturday. Senator ted cruz won in kansas and maine. The republican side. About 40,000 turned up to caucus on the democratic side. Cruz takes 24 delegates in kansas, 12 in maine. The texas senator believes his party is becoming more unified. I think the combination super tuesday election results, the campaign, and that is a very, very encouraging sign. Cruz is also celebrating a symbolic win at cpac in washington, d. C. Donald trump once again playing by his own rooms. He skipped the cpac conference yesterday. The cpac is usually a key stop for republicans hoping win the race. Trump took a trip to florida to campaign instead. While in orlando he revealed he wants to limit laws that threw torture, he didnt hold back insults to marco rubio. Mark had a very, very bad night and personally id call for him to drop out of the race. I think its time now. Rubio finished third in yesterdays primary elections and caucuses. Now to the democratic president ial candidates. Bernie sanders is racking up wins in the innovations midsection. The vermont senator won the Hilary Clinton had a commanding victory in louisianas president ial primary. Its the 11th state the president ial candidate has won so far and she maintains a significant delegate lead. Clinton has her eyes set on michigan. We have to win this election and we all know, we all know the stakes keep getting higher and the rhetoric were here from the other side keeps sinking lower. Meanwhile, Bernie Sanders expressed confidence he is on his path to victory. So we are doing what i wanted to do. Excite people. Energize people. Bring them out. A current standing for delegates. Trump leads republicans with 378 delegates. Cruz at 295. Marco rubio at 123. Kasich has 34 delegates. The republicans need more than 1200 delegates to win. Clinton leads the democratic sanders trails with less than 500. The democrats need nearly 2400 for the nomination. So heres whats up next for candidates with their eyes on the oval office. Sanders and Clinton Square off today. Also on the debate stage in flint, michigan tonight. That begins at 6 00 on cnn. Of course, water will be a hot topic in that debate. Puerto rico is holding its republican primary today. Tuesday voters for both parties cast their ballots for primaries in michigan and mississippi. The weather was mild, but all good things of course have to come to an end. Our meteorologist belen de leon is going to show us when rain is welcome back everyone. Our meteorologist bedstanding by in the Weather Center. Belen, we are rain on the way . Yes, we have rain and snow falling in the high country. Lets get right to the forecast. Those storms in california have been causing flooding. That moisture is headed to colorado. Now, to the scope of what they are dealing with this california, its not going to be quite as dangerous for us. But we will have that snow in the high country that will make times, especially this afternoon. So a closer look at doppler 9, the state. We have clouds in higher has juans. Beautiful right now over denver where we have that sunshine in full force and blue skies. 30s right now. 30s and 20s in northern Eastern Plains. The afternoon highs in the mountains 40s. You know what . If you are the type that likes to ski with snow coming down, well, youre going to get your wish today with the snow increasing. Meanwhile, dry on the front range and breezy at times. Highs way above our normal high. We should be closer to the 50s this time of year. So we are going to be about 20 degrees warmer than that. 70s in the Eastern Plains and a chance for some 80s down south. Where were going to have the warmer temperatures is where the heist risk for fire danger is. A red flag warning goes into effect at 11 00 a. M. Lasts through 6 p. M. Ai yi yi. They need the rain. They need the moisture. Today. We need it, too, but its not going to get here today. Not until tomorrow. In the high country more scattered this afternoon. 2 30 more clouds around at that time, but mainly dry. 7 30 we will have the clouds around town, but still that now traveling along i70 back home, skiers, snowboarders, snowmobilers could be traveling on wet roads. Use those windshield wipers through this evening. A possibility for some sprinkles. But really the main bulk of the rain wont arrive until tomorrow afternoon. Tomorrow morning we still have that snow steady out towards the western slope and in our northern mountains. So again this afternoon through tomorrow afternoon, that area shaded in the light blue color, more difficult to drive through. 5 to 10 inches. 38 overnight. Sprinkle. Partly cloudy skies. Then tomorrow a better chance for some showers. The drive into work is going to be fine, but possibly for the lunch hour and even into the early afternoon is when we could see that rain developing and some of these could turn into thunderstorms where we have some thunder and lightning, but the threat for any Severe Weather really is staying low across colorado. Clears up by tuesday. Wednesday 59 and 60s and 70s as we round out the week on welcome back. 7 18 on your sunday morning. We are waiting to learn the identity of a man found dead in lakewood. We have been following breaking news all morning. Manning. He is nounsed he is retiring. Mike klis says peyton already told the broncos. He joins us this morning. Thanks for coming in. What does this mean for the broncos for peyton, for his family, for the fans . Yeah. I mean, its the end of a great fouryear era. It was been this time that the broncos won the recruiting war for Peyton Manning. They gave him a fiveyear contract for 46 million. When he signed it, he was hoping for five. He ran out of gas. I think got to that super bowl line and he was on fumes. So they got 77 million. He was worth every penny that he collected. Four afc west titles in the four years. Four playoff appearances. Two super bowls. He rides off into the sunset. He and john elway, they are two quarterbacks in history who have finished their career with winning a super bowl. Both of them are broncos. He is in good company there. We have heard so much about ending for peyton. It looks that way, especially after the season he has had. He has had the aljazeera documentary, his injuries, to missing so many games. Personally, i think it was the toughest year because of what you said. He had two stories from his past that resurfaced and stained his image somewhat. He had to deal with those. And then the injury that he had to his foot on the field. On the field, he had nine touchdown passes against 17 interceptions. It was his worst statistical year. He really was kind of half benched for performance reasons and half went to the sidelines for injury reasons. Brock osweiler came in, played well. Had the broncos not fell apart osweiler would have been the starting quarterback in the postseason. It really kind of worked out that the team had five turnovers pretty much in a row. Peyton came to the rescue in that glams. That was storybook. He is their quarterback in the postseason and he goes out the way he deserved. Fairy tale ending. What happens next . We know you will be with us in the next half hour. We will get to that. Appreciate it, mike. We are going to be right back. First, your comments coming in online. You see donny saying remember his comeback was that game. It was amazing. Thank you, peyton. To peyton this morning. He deserves it. We know a lot of broncos fans this morning. Peyton memories. Its a story that has many of you talking this week in 9listens. And more in basketball this morning. Now back to the big announcement. Peyton manning has decided to retire. Our sports insider mike klis standing by. Mike, we were just talking about the great career that peytons had. The big question i think so many people have right now is whats next for peyton . Now we get to speculate on that. Yeah. It is going to be interesting to see what he does. First of all, i think he is going to take some time. Most of these speculations is the john elway route and go to the front office of the nfl. Tennessee titans. He has a close relationship with Cleveland Browns owner jimmy has lin. I think he is probably, well find out tomorrow when he i think they will have a press conference with peyton tomorrow and hell be asked that question. But i think probably, first of all, he is going to take some time. More importantly, what do the broncos do . I think they really step up their negotiations with Brock Osweiler now. They have made him a hardy offer. Three years, 45 million count be incentives. No doubt about that. It was a big contract that we saw yesterday. And brock proved himself this year. So many people have said this would not have been a Super Bowl Team without him stepping up in the middle of the season. Do you think he stays . I do think they are trying to commit to him. He has the option, starting tomorrow, listening to offers from other teams. So other teams can go after him. Texans stepping in there and making a bid for brock. I think at the end of the day, though, Brock Osweiler will here. There is only one defending super bowl champion. Very true. Mike, we are going to catch up with you in the next block. Thanks. Switching gears. 7 31 on your sunday. Snow and rain in california and its headed our way. We could see temperatures near the 70s along the front range and snow and rain in the high country. Lets check in with belen. Belen, travel will be kind of tough in the mountains today . Yes, sir. We have a Winter Weather advisory that goes into effect this afternoon. Good morning, ryan and jessica. Let me show you those advisories right now. This area shaded in blue, thats where we are going to have the snow. The pink color, we are not going to have the snow there. The fire danger will increase. So lets get first to the Winter Weather advisory because it goes into effect at 6 p. M. Thats kind of the window when its going to be a little more difficult to travel in the mountains. By the time the storm moves out 5 to 10 inches. The red flag warning. Gusts in this area ahead of this storm are going to pick up, hour and humidity will drop to 11 . So the potential for wildfires is to grow is high. We have that moisture towards snow will become more scattered as the sunday rolls on. Beautiful view right outside our studios from heyford tower. Blue skies, we will have more clouds this afternoon. Our temperatures will rise into its upper 60s and low 70s. Its kind of a mild start to the day right now if you are out walking the dog. 40s fon the map for the city. This afternoon highs in the upper 60s and low 70s. But a cooldown and wet weather work week. I will talk more about that in the full forecast. Right now a look the high anthony has that for us. If you are planning to get out to the mountains or heading home right now, the roadways are looking dry. Traffic volumes are relatively low. So we are keeping the drive times on the low side. 42 minutes out west to eisenhower tunnel. If you are heading back into the metro area, about 50 minutes. Everyone is taking their time. It is going to be later today we see that influx of traffic. Green lights the whole way. No slowdowns through Idaho Springs like we were dealing with yesterday. So smooth sailing, but what we have to be mindful of is the high volumes of traffic later on this evening. Plan one to two extra hours on the road. We may need to bump that up. You know, we are going to be dealing with the we had roads and snow by this evening. So those traction laws may be going into effect for some parts of the high country. Thank you, tracey. You can listen to cdots mountain travel radio for traffic conditions on i70 up to the minute road conditions. Log on to co trip. Org. On to world news this morning. For me, i think its how he brought the game to the line of scrimmage. No more huddle. He looked at the defense. All that. He also had some fundamentals and techniques copied by many quarterbacks in the last 510 years. People calling him in a derogatory sense happy feet because he moved his feet in the pocket. They thought that somehow that was incorrect or the sign of someone not physically tough enough. Now every kid from eight years old forward comes back in the pocket and moves his feet. Yeah, that was bill polian. What a decision he made. Yeah, really. He went in the hall of fame last year. For good reason. In large part because of his decision. Polian was saying about this retirement process. When you think about retiring as player, there is so much that you need to consider. Its emotional, too. Whats peyton thinking about . What is he dealing with as he is making that decision . Probably his family. Does he still have it . He still loved the game. That was his problem. He still loves film work. The week. Most players, as they get old, they hate the practice part and they only love the game. He loves the practice part and all the process to it. Difficult. That potential coaching prospect, being up in the handling the schemes. He is an offensive coordinator. That is what he was as a quarterback. Thanks so much. Appreciate it. The broncos are expected to talk about peyton leaving. We will dear live around 11 00 a. M. Tomorrow. Manning is respected as bun of the best quarterbacks of the game. Sports illustrated writers talking about his legacy. I think he will go down as a guy who showed everybody how to play the position to perfection. And how to prepare. How to play. How to treat his teammates. Just how to be the ultimate pro at the most important position a pros pro. We will bring you more insight on mannings retirement through the newscast, through the day, at 9news. Com. Now to one of our other top stories this morning. Thomas with a touchdown, and there is the record Peyton Mannings 51st move over tom brady. Manning this year. Congratulations i really feel like its a team accomplishment. Certainly an offensive accomplishment. But just a lot of people played roles in this. I think a unique thing and unique thing to be a part of nfl history. Quite the season. What a legacy Peyton Manning will leave behind. We are following breaking news that Peyton Manning has announced that he will be retiring. Our sports insider mike klis standing by. Highlights, such a fantastic season. So many great moments. So many highs and lows. A lot of people talking on social media, and im sure you have answered some of these questions in the past, how much he is a colts guy and not a broncos guy. Respond to that. I would say he packed so many great memories as a bronco that he is retiring everybody bit a bronco as an indiana colts. He had two of his three best statistical seasons with the broncos, including the best of all time. That clip they just showed right there. He had the alltime best season . 2013. He had two super bowl appearances. One won with the colts. Two super bowl appearances. One won with the colts. All the records he set, the career records, he was wearing a bronco uniform. He was 4510 here. He was all in. His foundation gave a large percentage to the at risk youth kids here in colorado. I think he did so much for the broncos. Plus, he is a bronco the most recent. Its the most vivid memory. Not mention going out with the super bowl. That doesnt hurt. And lets talk about his last season for a little bit. It was historic in so many ways. A lot of injuries. To have that documentary aired, too, during the season was tough. He did. You know, this last season kind of stained his four years here, except for how he came off the bench and came to the rescue in that san diego game. That whole super bowl thing, too. Yeah, the postseason. Yeah, this was an up and down season definitely statistically. It was his worst. He is making the right decision to leave the game. I think he got to the finish line on fumes, but he also got to the super bowl championship finish line as it should be. We have just a couple of seconds here, mike. I want to talk briefly about broncos. Now the potential for Brock Osweiler pick up with Peyton Manning left off. Can they make it back to the super bowl . If they have the same defense. So make sure and it takes a while to develop. You cant harvest them the first year. Its a longterm project. By my asparagus garden is over 20 years. I was dreading it last year. Share the wealthy. Thomas in the end zone and the sixth touchdown pass of the game. Screen pass. He is off to the races. Midfield. He is long gone. That will be Peyton Mannings seventh touchdown pass. He ties an nfl record. And this is against it. Its official, folks. Peyton manning is hanging up his helmet. He is retiring. Our sports insider mike klis joining us. We have been talking about this all morning long. What is the reason for timing of there was a deadline here . Yeah, there was. On wednesday his 19 million salary for the 2016 season would have been fully guaranteed. The broncos werent going to pay that 19 million. In fact, they had pretty much decided they had moved on from Peyton Manning. But they wanted to give him the dignity of going out on his own terms, making his own decision. Had he decided not to retire and, you know, he wanted to have more time to consider this, the broncos would have been forced to make a move on tuesday, probably release him. But they let him take as much time as he could. The deadline was tuesday for him, since his salary would have been guaranteed wednesday. He made his decision yesterday. So they got a couple extra days now to try to get osweiler done. That could have been messy. Yeah. Obviously, a lot of back and forth on whether or not peyton would actually retire. If you look at it, mike, thinking about this in the past couple of hours, there were so many little clues here and there. It started right after the new england patriot against the patriots. First of all, we didnt know about the Bill Belichick conversation. That came out a day or two later whether he said this might be my last rodeo. That was a hint. On the podium in the afc championship presentation he was saying goodbye to the denver fans. His manner, what he had to say, it sounded like a guy who said goodbye. And then in the super bowl, the night before the super bowl he addressed the team and he started getting emotional. And so right then you knew at least everyone knew that was it for the denver broncos. Manning and the broncos. The question is, whether he hung them up for good, and thats what he decided. And speaking of those signs, its something peytons been talking about a long time, included this clip from a while back. So i think you do have an appreciation for those faces. You know once you stop playing, you dont get to fly on a plane standing up when the plane is taking off. Fastened. Phone. When the pilot says we cant take off, they are lying because you can [ laughter ] you know, because we do it. Those are the things you miss when you stop playing. Your reaction to that, mike . Yeah, i tell you, when i covered him the last four years, i was neutral, objective, but i had a sense i was covering history. You certainly did. And you were. Thank you. By the way, we are going to carry the press conference thats expected to happen tomorrow at 11 live on channel and channel 20 and 9news. Com. Dont forget to tune into 9news. Com. Some other headlines this morning. Snow and rain in california headed our way now. We could see temperatures on the 70s today in the front range with snow and rain in the high country. A mix of rain and snow really scattered in our high country. Overnight here in the city a but really nothing to write home about. Tomorrow morning the agree work is okay under partly cloudy skies as that snow lingers in our north and Central Mountains. We will take a look at the rest of the weekend forecast. Right now on balance of power, colorados democrats felt the burn on tucson. Bernie sanders won the state caucus by 18 points, but nationally Hilary Clinton is the one with momentum for the democrats. And donald trump is racking up huge wins for the republicans. Today the road ahead and what it might mean for the senate race in colorado. Thank you for taking the time. We appreciate it. Great to be here. Thank you. So if things continue apace, it looks like we are in for a general election matchup that could be trump versus clinton. What does that race look like in your mind . Well, first of all, who would have thought we would have dom this place . I certainly didnt call this a year ago, six months ago, three months ago, even a month ago. I thought there was still an out. I think it looks good for democrats because polls show that trump is the most beatable and i think clinton is going to have a much better job, a much easier path in solidifying the out. I think Bernie Sanders has made Hilary Clinton run really far to the left, and thats come back from. In addition to that, she just doesnt have the energy of obama. I think that once the people who came out and caucused for bernie start to feel disenfranchised by their ridiculous super makeup, they are going to lose more energy as a party. Do you not think trump that is made all the candidates move to the right . Trump himself is far to the right on some things. He is kind of a mixed bag when it comes to policy. Its kind of ever changing. But he had over a Million People show up to the polls for him in virginia. And the post super tuesday i think he is a unifier for the democratic party. He is going to energize our base and bring people out. Even if clinton isnt able to accomplish it, going against trump i think will accomplish that. Gut check time. Could donald trump win the general election in november . Yes. Too many people have discounted him to this point. I think to say he couldnt win is a huge mistake. So doesnt that put a lot of work on the democratic partys shoulders . It does, but republicans are going to be fighting two battles. Number one, they have got a divided party in supporting trump or not. Number two, they have got to look down ballot. Isnt the real issue, when we skip past the nomination process, trying to win over the people who couldnt have participated anyway, the unaffiliated voters . Yeah. There. We thought he had challenges getting the nomination and he seems to be doing particularly well there. I think this is a different election than we have ever seen before. Frustrated after eight years of obama. I think that people are sick of hillary and her stiffness and the fact that she feels entitled to this just by virtue of the fact she is a woman. And i think that people just want to burn the entire thing to the ground and start over. And donald trump signifies that for a lot of people. In that same vain, i hear talk i never could have imagined out of establishment republicans. Some even talking about do we scrap the gop and set up a new Political Party . I mean, could that actually happen . Could we see the republicans divide into two parties this year . I have a lot of friends who are considering supporting gary johnson, the libertarian candidate, former governor of new mexico. And, so you know, its possible that we could see a rise of a more libertarian either party or section of the party. I think its yet to be seen. And none of the rules of who knows . Lying. If trump were to win, would that be good for the Republican Party in the long term . Now he is the standard bearer. He stands for what the Republican Party is all about. Of republicans, especially in the establishment, that are going to stand for that. And i think they automatically from what he is doing, and go a different direction, such as third party. If clinton is the eventual nominee for the democratic party, should we take her loss in the caucuses here as a sign that democrats around verye very enthusiastic in colorado . You got to remember that republicans had 15, 16 candidates. Thats a tremendous infrastructure to get out early primary voters. Democrats had, you know, handful. We have more than a dozen senate race right now against michael bennet. They are hoping be nominated as the person to run against him. Do you see a path for someone who supports trump to win . Both. To ask him that question at the debate we will be having on so. But with that many people, it very vulnerable. They are going to have to make a decision quick. Michael bennet has hitched his wagon to Hilary Clinton. Does this rear its ugly head for him in november . Certainly, there are going to be challenges. He has hitched his wagon, as you say, to clinton early on. I think that helps him in a general election. Each other solidify the base. I think thats a good thing. I think the main question is what are independents voting for . They didnt get to participate in the primary or these caucuses. Like republicans, are they vote be antiestablishment, or like democrats are they voting experience . I think thats a question thats going to play big in colorado. Thats a third of the electorate. Bennett has yet to take a stance on healthcare and what are bernie supporters, people sense of history showed up for a democratic socialists going to do when Michael Bennett realizes what the political tea leaves looks like and opposes it the same way hickenlooper did. He is going to have problem at the top. Ballot. A trump affiliated candidate running opposite bennet pushes all those people to bennet and gets them excited about going for bennett. We had a lot of complaints about the caucuses on both the republicans couldnt parse anytime. The democrats had giant logjams. Is it trial to go back to a primary in colorado . My family arrived, children in tow, at 6 45. We were checked in at 8 thyrses. I didnt get to participate because i had allowed that much time, an hour and a half, to actually do something in the caucus. It didnt happen. So like working families, parents with young children, seniors, people who work at night, they didnt get to participate either. And i think that is starting to live out its useful life. I think a primary is in our future. You know, every four years we talk about this and then some legislator puts it forth and then they look at the fiscal notes and then it dies. We have this discussion literally every four years and it always dies because it costs a lot of money to switch the system. Thank you for your time. This sunday, have the antitrump . Ted cruz has himself a Super Saturday and donald trump, who won louisiana and kentucky, seems to agree. I won ted oneonone, okay. Cruz wins kansas and maine and wins the day on delegates. Donaltrump is not the best candidate to go headtohead with hillary clinton. Meanwhile, whatever happened to marco rubio . Three thirds and a fourth on a rough night.
