We have a lot of breaking news today. Starting with militants who have launched an attack on the American University of afghanistan. An Associated Press photographer who was in a class on the kabul campus at the time said he heard an explosion and shot at when he looked out of the window. He and nine other students managed to escape the classroom and take refuge in a house off campus. Ambulances have arrived at the campus. No word on the casualties. We are still tracking so much information on this. Also, another big story we are tracking today, a powerful earthquake devastated a string of mountainous towns in central italy. Today, trapping residents under piles of rubble, at least 73 people have been killed. I know. It is horrible. The center of the quake was in armatrice, outside of rome by joining me in arm were atrice, one of the armatrice, one the three towns shaken by the earthquake and this one it seems is hardest hit. The Civil Protection agency has announced that the death toll has risen once again. It is now 73 and rising, with dozens missing and hundreds injured. But this town has born the brunt of the death toll. At least half of the people were in this town. Residential building. It was maybe three stories high. Huge lumps of concrete. The one thing i dont see, is really any sign of life. There is no furniture. There is no bed. There is no people. And it has been engulfed by the concrete that surrounded it. This was a big quake. This was 6. 2 on the richter scale. And there have been dozens, at least 40 aftershocks since then. There are helicopters moving extent of the damage. Because there are about 60 small hamlets, villages, isolated communities, some of them that have been cut off, because the roads are blocked. And the authorities want to get some handle on exactly how badly those hamlets have been hit or possibly destroyed. There is an earth mover just coming behind us. As i said, there are at least three towns that are badly damaged. The death toll, now standing at 73. But that is expected to back to you. When you see that damage, that number will probably go up. Yes. And Officials Say a powerful earthquake measuring a preliminary magnitude of 6. 8 has shaken central myanmar. The u. S. Geological survey says the quake was deep below the earths surface about 52 miles below and generally deep earthquakes cause less surface damage. And a third earthquake in indonesia today as well. If youre wondering why there are so many quakes in the quakes over that point, we are questioning it. We are asking questions. Yes. So we brought in an expert from the school of mines in golden to talk with us about this. That is coming up in the show later on. It is pretty interesting to hear what he has to say. Around here, calmer. Yes. But it is different. Because weve got rain out there. But the pitterpatter is so nice. It is. Really soothing. Looking out and seeing the comparison with denver, and boulde above the tree line. Check this out, already seeing snow. Look at the shot of the divide. Snowtopped mountains there already. So if youre not ready, you better get ready. Yes. I think there is more. Danielle, it is still technically summer. Im not ready for it. Not yet. All right, it is just a dusting up there. But it still is pretty incredible to see, here we are in the middle of august, middle of the Summer Season and the snowfall is coming down. Refreshing. Nice change of pace out there. Nice to maybe put on a sweatshirt and bundle up. And in it for the next couple of days and on and off rain showers, as well as the cooler temperatures, and you can see the view outside. Our studios at logan and sphear, nothing but gray. And hd doppler 9, the showers and thunderstorms, have been pushing in from the southwest. I will zoom in and you can see a little bit of light snowfall, out there toward mount evans and the rainfall coming down in denver and lakewood and golden picking up on some good shower activity. And i76, if you have a road trip heading out there toward nebraska, we will be watching for some light rain showers throughout the next couple of hours. Here in denver, thus far, throughout the month of august, only 0. 05. We should be just shy of an inch and a half. So hopefully this system and the wet weather that were anticipating the next couple of days will help us out in that regard. It is is cool. How about 66 degrees. Certainly feeling a little bit more like fall around here. Upper 50s in fort collins and there, relatively speaking. And in grand junction, it is 75. And 79 for our friends in southeastern colorado. Huge difference from yesterday. We are 18 degrees cooler here in denver. Greeley, and 23 degrees cooler out there in sterling. So again, light rain showers, off and on today. And watching the cooler temperatures the next couple of days as well. And then i dont know about you, but im getting pumped up for the weekend. Already. Yes. It is wednesday. Hump day. Yes, broncos game. At home. Yes. And i think Mother Nature is going to be maybe do some of those grill outs. Nice. Very good. Or go to the pool if it is still open. Sweater today. Swimsuit by saturday. Colorado. Speaking of the bron corks a bankruptcy judge has approved a request from Sports Authority to broncos, a bankruptcy judge has approved the request from Sports Authority to transfer the naming rights from the Sports Authority name to the broncos. And Court Records show the delaware where the company filed for bankruptcy back in march. A suspect is being treated at Boulder Community health this morning. That is after he spent the night hiding from police. Russell daniels fired four shots, officers say, while they were trying to get him to come out of a motor home last night. Police searched for him for hours afterwards. Closing several roads this morning. And they found him at around 7 00 this morning. And they arrested him. You can see him right hire being put on a stretcher and into an ambulance. He had wounds police have not said how he was hurt. But again, the standoff is over. The suspect is taken to the hospital. All right, we are also getting today, a look a new released mug shot of a sheriff charged with sexual assault. Tom hanna is scheduled to be in court today. No word if formal charges have been filed yet. He has been the search of sedgewick county for two years. He started with the department whoever pulled the trigger shooting a man in mountbelo, maxwell place, in that neighborhood. We are working to find out more information about the victims condition this morning. Wish them the best. James feegen is talking about today, u. S. Swimmer and apologizing for what he called a serious distraction he and three teammates caused at a gas station during the olympics in rio. He says he left out some information, and in his statement to police originally, including the fact that the swimmers urinated behind the a poster off the wall. He still maintains the group did not force their way into a bathroom and a gun was pointed at them by a security guard. He was pulled off an airplane last week by police to question him a little bit further. Little pieces keep coming out about the story. Man. Anger and outrage among the millions of people who rely on the epipen. Rely is the big word there. Huge. Rely on it for life or the market and the price is through the roof. Members of congress are looking into a federal investigation pitterpatter. Here in the 9 backyard, hi there, meteorologist danielle grant coming at you, and things are looking pretty good as we go throughout the remainder of the afternoon, watching the showers off and on and we need the rain around here. It has been an extremely dry month of august. So this is kind of a Welcome Change of pace around here from the series of 90degree days we have been watching. For some warmer temperatures, it is out there in colorado, and you just have to go west. Take a look at this. Out there in the grand valley, it is stunning. A couple of cumulus clouds starting to build. And then you just move over to the east, a little bit, along i 70, and you push out there, toward Loveland Pass and talking about a little bit of snowfall, coming down early this morning. Bill linfield capturing the great shot. Still out there in fort collins, light rainfall, coming down on, all of the students out there at csu. Temperatures in fort collins rino on the nose here. Downtown denver. And 64 in sterling, with the 50s from nederland south toward evergreen. Right now at the airport, winds out of the south at 7 miles an hour. Mostly cloudy skies out there. Temperatures here in the 9 backyard, well, kind of cool. Almost need a jacket. We are at about 64. As we look ahead toward this afternoon, i think temperatures climb just a few more degrees. We are going to be in the lower 70s around the metro area. A little bit warmer with some more sunshine across the though up in the mountains. Thats really where most of the shower activity has been. Throughout the morning. The central mountains. Into the foothills. And here downtown denver, we are finally getting a good soaking. I hope you like this free water. For your backyard. For all of that grass out there. And then along i76, sterling, ileff, cedric, picking up light rain as well. Tonight, the showers are ending and we will go with mostly cloudy overnight and a cool evening down to let the fresh air in. The rest of the afternoon, the showers are beginning to break apart. The area, 8 00, 9 00, but overall things should be moving out. 8 00 a. M. Tomorrow morning, partly sunny skies. And should be beautiful out to the south and to the west but still lingering with a few clouds, and a little bit of fog early tomorrow morning across the eastern plains. By 3 00, tomorrow afternoon, the showers start popping back into the forecast. And i think they are going to be more isolated compared to the widespread scattered showers we have been watching today. And as this system starts pushing out, we will be making that starts to inch a little bit closer, here into colorado, as we head toward the weekend. And you know what that means, we have a little bit of a warmup on the way. Some sunshine and mid to upper 80s. In store for saturday and sunday. Dont go anywhere. 9 news at noon returns after an update on the devastating floods in louisiana. Some of the people who rescued people during those floods good samaritans. A louisiana lawmaker wants to regulate the volunteer rescue process. He wants to require people who rescue to be trained and pay for a permit before they can help anyone. The senator is making the proposal, and says it is about liability issues. During the floods, a loosely organized group that called itself the cajun navy rescued hundreds of strangers. Those volunteers are against the proposed government regulation. Lets get back to the earthquakes we talked about at the top of the show. And in people have died after a 6. 2 magnitude quake hit in the middle of the country. Many people are trapped under debris, and the quake occurred in the middle of the night when everybody was asleep. Around 3 00 in the morning. A stronger quake hit with a 6. 8 magnitude, and hit central myanmar, but the center was far below the earths surface, so the damage is not as great as what happened in italy. And then at least three people are believed dead there. Indonesia in the middle of night. No casualties reported and no tsunami alert. Still very high magnitude quakes. Three in one day. We talked with an assistant professor of geo physics at the school of mines. So thank you for coming in. No problem. Thank you. When you hear these three huge eahquake happen in one day, do you think oh, my gosh, what is going on . Yes, although actually globally, these are not huge earthquakes. These are large, they are large enough to cause damage, but they are not, earthquake magnitude scale, really rates at about 9, and these are only 6 to 6 or 7. And there are a couple of hundred earthquakes every year about this magnitude. It just happens that three of them have occurred on the same day, which is unusual but not unprecedented. So we werent really taken by surprise by the earthquakes. Lets talk about exactly what happens in an earthquake. We hear about the plates. But explain how they shift and what happens. Yes, so the plates, the earths crust is made up of each other. And as they move past each other, the plate boundaries, which are made up of faults, fault lines, which are sort of cracks in the earth plates, they are normally locked shut by friction. But occasionally, when the strain gets large enough, the friction is overcome, and those two plates will actually jolt past each other. And thats what produces the seismic waves that cause the damage to buildings. And the force that causes the buildings to collapse. Exactly. The area of al mentioning, it was an area of concern, you didnt know if or when, the earthquake would hit there, but youre not surprised. No, in fact, all three of these earthquakes occurred in known plate boundary zones. So they actually didnt come to any to surprise, to any seismologist. And we have been studying earthquakes using sisemology and modern technique force 50 or 60 years and we have known the earthquakes have happened in the past in all of these areas and earthquakes will happen in the future, but unfortunately, what we cant when the next earthquake will happen. But we did know that these were areas that were at risk from earthquakes. You were just teaching a class this morning over at mines and what topic of discussion to have with your classmates. Yes. So my second intro to geo physics class. The semester, so im not sure if any of my students are watching but one of the nice things about my job is that sometimes, you know, Natural Hazards and earthquakes happen overnight, and it is nice to bring, you know, keep the process fresh by talking about very recent events. So we talked about the al the one in myanmar until i showed up to class, and i was here. Thank you for coming to talk to us too. And we appreciate it. This is an epipen. It can save someones life when theyre having a severe the epinephrine auto injector and owns the market just like kleenex for tissues. Epipens are very expensive and every year, the price is going up and a twopack, the price has skyrocketed. You have to buy a two pack. From 100, when i started buying them. To 600 now. And the pens have to be replaced every year. Guess what else is going up . The drug maker Mylan Pharmaceuticals executive pay and compensation by 600 . The mylan ceo total complication was 2. 4 million to nearly 19 million over the last eight years. It is coming at a time when there is not so much drug scrutiny. Im struggling for basic lifesaving medicine for my child, and the money that i pay for this medication is going to somebodys paycheck, or some crazy profit margin. Medicine that you hope you here is something promising. Congress is going to bat for the many people who cant afford the epipens and calling the price increases gouging. Wow. For that persons salary to go up 600 , while some parents are struggling to have this medicine for their kids. Some people dont buy them and they cant afford them and they risk so much. Just outrageous. I hope they do something about it. Me too. The biggest city in colorado to ban marijuana sales has all of a sudden changed its mind. Thornton city council has voted in the city. Now, youre not going to see pot shops all up and down the streets there. The city will only allow up to four shops. And some Community Members actually spoke out against this move at the meeting last night. But in the end, the money won out. And it will be built at i25 and 136th in thornton. It will have 102 bays and a 170 foot fence. For all of those stray balls. Not everybody is happy about the project. But it has gotten approval. Some people worry that is such a big building and would bring so much noise and commotion. At firs because that is such a small lot behind us that we didnt understand how something so enormous could possibly even fit in there. We need a little more things set for entertainmentwise in the area. Not having to go to westminster, or a lot further out. Top golf has not said when it will begin to build. Or when the new location might open. Here we go. Rain showers coming into the metro area. They will be off and on throughout the next couple of hours, as we zoom in, and you can see the rain isnt going to anywhere. I think until dinnertime. But we need it. We do. And i will go home and take a nap. With the rain. A good day for that. Lyin ryan. Mounting a hollywood career comeback . Dancing with the stars. .
