Lets talk to Amelia Earhart right now, for more on this situation, and how it is impacting the morning drive. It is a huge closure, amelia. It is a major closure, tarhonda and affecting essentially areas between north and South Boulder as well as areas across the c. U. Campus. As we focus on the actual closure itself, across Foothills Parkway, colorado 157, between arapahoe road, colorado 7, all the way north and southbound, between there and u. S. 36. And the alternate routes to get around the delays are already developing. They include 55th street, which parallels the Foothills Parkway area. And cherryvale road, further off to the east, it is also delay here, as traffic is already starting to build, in the area, az and as far as the alternates go, those are going to load up fast as well, staying along u. S. 36 and continuing to use broadway, it is also an option to avoid foothills and we will let you know how the situation changes and how the traffic is impacted as well. All right. That is going to be a mess up there if we get into the heart of the rush hour. Cooler and wet in denver today. As we see the beginning of a quick cooloff. All along the front range. But we are definitely starting to see the shift toward fall like weather. And lets talk meteorologist marty coniglio. Live in the backyard. Weep shouldnt be fooled we shouldnt be fooled though. Summer is not over. But looking seasonal with the umbrella there. Yes, we are talking about this about an hour ago, and it wouldnt be a shock to have light rain out here. Light rain going on in the backyard right now. Cloudy conditions for you. As you head out the door today. And completely different scene, from what we sunshine and clear conditions, anyway. And at this time of the day, yesterday, and for us today, it is a cloudy start to the day, and with some very light showers. And dont look for any big downpours on you, during the course. The day today, and around here, we are looking at the clouds, the light showers, over the area, and we have rain, from here in the front range, up over northeastern colorado, and it has been raining fairly nicely in logan county this morning. And a small pocket of rain, here and there, and it is between now and 11 00, and we will get some more showers during the afternoon, and when it is all said and done by the end of the day, a few of us getting upwards of a third of an inch of rainy the end of the day. And periods of rain, there will be some brief breaks in the overcast, allowing us to get into the low 70s today. For our day, and during the evening, you will once again be running into a few pockets of rain. It could affect some after school activities. Especially if we do have lightning. Into the low 60s by the dinner hour tonight. Marty, thank you much for that. In the news today, homes collapsed on people as they were sleeping. A strong earthquake shook a small town in central italy. It was a big one. A 6. 2 magnitude quake. And a series of aftershocks, at least 37 people were killed. That number is expected to go up. And we have a live look at the scene right now. Where buildings just crumbled looking for people that may be trapped. Homes are gone. And crews searching the debris, for any sign of survivors. Now, the hardest hit areas were in amitrice and acumole, 80 miles outside of rome. We are waiting to find out the impact of another strong earthquake, this one struck myanmar, in asia, near thailand. And preliminary estimates show this quake was 6. 8, and no word at this time, of any injuries. We expect to learn more about Sexual Assault allegations against the sedgewick county sheriff today. Tom hannah is in the logan county detention center, right now, and he will go in front of a judge today, for an advisement hearing. No formal charges have been filed against him. But sources tell 9 wants to know, he is accused of Sexual Assault. Hannah has been the sheriff in sedgewick county for two years and started with the department in 2011 as a deputy. For the first time in six months, since one of his line of duty, park county sheriff fred wagoner talked in depth about what happened. And answered questions from 9 news surrounding the death of nate carrigan. And the Colorado Bureau of investigation looked at what took place and tuesday night, the sheriff released hundreds of pages from that report. On february 24, eight park county sheriffs deputies, including the sheriff, came up with a plan to remove bailey resident martin worth from his home. Within minutes of arriving to three deputies and worth were shot. Corporal carrigan was killed. We asked the sheriff why he decided not to send in the s. W. A. T. Team to help with the eviction. Despite reports of worths previous threats against Law Enforcement. We didnt feel it rose to that level. And it is probably a double edged sword. If i sent the s. W. A. T. Team to do an eviction, overreacted. Carrigans parents are considering suing the sheriff and the department. The sheriff says he hopes carrigans family can forgive them but he says his department did nothing wrong. It is 6 07 right now. And 9 News Reporter Colleen Ferreira live at one of those plants this morning, where they treat some 250 million gallons of Water Quality is very important to you. We know that. But it is also very important to denver water. Here at the treatment plant, they tell me last year, they conducted more than 68,000 tests to ensure their water is as clean as possible. Were here in denver this morning at the marston Water Treatment plant. I want to bring in patty brubaker, the manager here. Thank you very much for being with us this morning. First things first, where does our water come from here . Denver water, all water mountains. You guys hold yourself to a pretty High Standard when it comes to water. We do. Our internal standards are stricter than the state standards set by the Colorado Department of health. And federal standards. Lets talk about the process of treating the water. Youre telling me it is a five step process to make sure the water is as pure as possible. We bring the water in and basically coagulate it, which means we combine the dirt and make it heavy and we settle it, and so it goes through the sedimentation process, so all of that dirt settles out. And it goes through a filtration process. And which filters out all of the small particles and goes into disinfection, and after were done with disinfection, we do a Corrosion Control and then we send it out to the Distribution System. So we are in this area right now, where some of that treatment takes place. And the 24hour operation here. Yes. Yes, 24 7. 365. We have people monitoring our system all the time. And it looks so intricate. Patty, im curious why be transparent with us and the viewers. Why show us all of this . Well here at denver water, we are very prated of what we do. Very very proud of what we do. Very proud of the water we put out. And we want to be transparent and make sure our customers are confident in what we do. Thank you very much for being with us this morning. I know we will be chatting with different people throughout the morning to give you aen an idea of what they do here, at one of the three Water Treatment plants, when it comes to all of the drinking water. Coming up at 6 30, guys, we are having that conversation that so we will talk about lead, and where it comes from, and how it may get into your water and we will do some tests, too, to show you what you can do about it. Thanks, colleen. Colleen talking about denvers water efforts to maintain quality. Denver water says the Colorado Department of health and environment is the Regulatory Agency when it comes to making sure water is safe. Denver water says it sends testing water results, and data, to the department of health constantly, to make sure light showers over the area now. Cloudy. Not only here but up the road in fort collins. Over csu right now, we are looking at cloudy conditions. Thats the case through most of the day. We will have a few breaks in the overcast. We see these light showers in denver. And especially on the southwest side of town. And it looks like into kin carol valley area perhaps, light rain going on and that continues also in the foothills. And with the rain just north of brush, headed up towards sterling. And out over the plains. For us, over the hours, the clouds, very light rain possible, from really any time, from now, through the rest of the afternoon, and the big thing today, gary, is just the clouds keeping the temperatures down. And we wont get out of the 70s today. Sounds like a gray day to me. Yes. Some of the worst flooding in louisianas history, produced some of the biggest heroes. But if you want to help save back from suspension this morning. We will talk about how investigators say he chose food cloudy, light rain, off and on, through the day today, and certainly not continuous. And the heavier storms midwest. That is still where the summer monsoon is focusing, more in the midwest, and we have more of an independent system moving through colorado right now, rotating around and giving us the rain showers here, from the front range, and east. Those will go through the morning, and early afternoon. Here we are at 1 00, and then a couple in the afternoon. And during the evening, light showers, and 9 00, we start wrapping this thing up. And not a ton of rain for a lot of places. But at least some rain for most of us, and a few shut out completely but i think for the most part, at least you could get one or 0. 02 of an inch of rain, with a few pockets of heavy showers during the showers this afternoon. And temperatures in the 70s here. And 50s and 60s in mountain areas. And isolated storms for the front range and east. And even fewer in western colorado where there will be even less rain today. And not much happening down south either. And the temperatures in the 70s here. And 80s down south. Areas. And 73, clouds, light showers, off and on through the day. And evening. And then clearing a bit tonight. Hit the upper 40s. Chilly morning tomorrow morning. Showers come back tomorrow and then for the weekend, we start drying out. Thanks, marty. Lets go out to our travel times now, we will kick things off in the denver commute, and taking a like look at the drive times across commerce city. An eastbound delay there. And 7 minutes heading up northbound. Overall, the delays that have be most significant, have been along the boulder corridor, and not only just the police activity, heading into boulder itself, but now u. S. 36 is in the mix with an eastbound 36 crash here at wadsworth. And everything is off to the right shoulder. But with traffic, going by, at about 55 miles an hour. The ramp from wadsworth is going very slowly. We have about four or five cars on the scene there. Along with the emergency vehicles. And on top of that, we have also got still of course, the police activity. And right across your it is still shut down between 36 and arapahoe and the alternate route with the s. W. A. T. Activity is to use 55th street or chairdale road, both of which parallel 157 or foothills which is going to be very busy during our entire morning rush hour. Sounds like it. Thank you much. Crisis in flint, michigan, left a lot of people across the country wondering if their water is safe. This morning, we are getting a rare look inside the denver Water Treatment plant looking at where the water comes from and how it is treated. 9 News Reporter Colleen Ferreira has more from inside the plant. Reporter we are talking about lead this morning because many of you may have that concern. We are inside one of the Water Quality labs here at the denver Water Treatment plant and there is a number there at the bottom of the screen. Concern about lead. Or think your water may have traces of lead in it. 3038932444. And they are going to send you a free sampling kit, a testing kit, so you can go ahead and test your water and find out the results and then take matters into your own hands. Decampbell here, the director of Water Quality and treatment at the plant, deek campbell here, the director of Water Quality here and zeke, the water comes from the mountains and streams but where does the leom in the Distribution System is free of lead. And lead can enter through your home plumbing and the pipes with the solder and the fix tours within the home. We are talking about homes, possibly schools an offices and anyone who may have those type of pipes could be at risk for lead. Are you correct. Lead service lines, which are predominantly in homes prior to the mid 1950s have a higher contributor to lead in the home. You guys are offering the free testing kits, sampling kits and send the box, and pretty self explanatory as far as what to do but youre testing three different types of water from the faucet. Correct. And what were trying to do is locate where in the home the led lead is actually coming from. So it could be becoming from fixtures and other locations in the home, and from that service line. All right, so guys, again, that number at the bottom of the screen right now, if you had that concern, about the water office, go ahead, and call that number, and ask one of them, you will get three of these and fill them up and send it right in and they will let you know your results. Okay. Well, clean water can be a concerning subject. That is where the flint water crisis might come to mind. When it comes to the water issue in flint, here is what you need to know. They changed their water source when they treated from the detroit water part to the flint river and changed the water supply. Denver water says they have a consistent waters source. If there was a change to the source, it would be studied and analyzed by denver water first under state review to ensure the same issue doesnt happen in denver. 6 42 right now. Should children be allowed to skip the pledge of allegiance in schools . It is an option one School District gave. But lots of patriotic parents are offended. And a display that gives new meaning to the term in color. Crayons. Used as inspiration, and in a most parents dont have a problem with signing a permission slip. But one that went home with students in florida is causing outrage on social media. People are calling it dumb an unpatriotic. Yes, the permission slip would allow parents to opt their student out of reciting the pledge of allegiance. At the beginning of the class day. It says i understand my rights as a parent, and i reflect that my child noted above be excused from reciting the pledge of allegiance. This request includes standing and placing his or her right hand over his or her heart. A picture of the permission slip was posted online and it has sparked a lot of debate and the School District says it is only trying to fulfill a state mandate to inform parents of their rights. And people are giving a lot of feedback saying this is unnecessary, and it really is just so unpatriotic. There are schools that do not recite the pledge anymore and disheartening for those who grew up reciting the pledge and say it is necessary. It seems like tradition at the very least but it is the under god part i think a lot of people are upset thats why parents opt out. And why do you have to send home the slip . And they are putting the language in the School Handbook and it is too much to have a slip to say i want to opt out of it. And we posted the question on my facebook page. Let me know what you think. Sounds good. Lets check the weather with marty. A few showers around the area today, especially focused over the front range, the mountain areas, and then here along the i25 corridor. Day. And slacking off a bit, slightly, later on, with lighter showers here, and we will get a few stray, very, very isolated storms, west of veil pass, late in the day today, so the best concentration of rain will be essentially from fair play to denver, and up through estes park, and then through cheyenne, later in the day. And for the weekend, still looks warm, still looks dry. And could see a storm in the foothills on sunday. But man, does it look good saturday with. A High Temperature of the evening game. Broncos rams right here on denver and channel 20. And temperatures in the 70s at kickoff. And Still Holding in the upper 60s to near 70 by the end of that ball game. We will start up here across 225 northbound with an accident right around al me dax the northbound stretch toward mississippi crowding up very quickly. Right now, the left lane is which parallels 225. And as we go out to the maps, we do want to talk about the Foothills Parkway closure which extends between arapahoe and down to u. S. 36. And just got a note from one of our viewers, marcia, she let us know, of course, cherryveil does not connect with u. S. 36. It does connect with South Boulder road. If you do need to get on and off of that highway drive and access the areas of foothills, yes. The lewisville exit is an option. If youre using South Boulder road as an alternate, that will and 55 is an option to the west. We will have more on the traffic impact of the s. W. A. T. Search, coming up in a few.
