After a dry morning tomorrow. And then another drizzly cloudy morning, greets us on friday, as we finish up this workweek, on our way to what looks like a warm dry weekend. Right now, Boulder Police are searching for a man considered armed and dangerous. And People Living near the Foothills Parkway area are told to shelter in place, until they find this man. This is a live look at the scene this morning. Foothills parkway is closed. From arapahoe avenue, to u. S. 36. Police say a man fired four shots while officers were talking with him late tuesday night. Then he took off. Departments armored bear cat vehicle are all there right now. Amelia is looking into whether the incident is causing any traffic delays. What have you found, amelia . They extended the closure over the last 45 minutes or so. It started off right around the focus of foothills, and now it extends across a pretty big northbound and southbound stretch of foothills, all the way, from u. S. 36, to colorado 7. Which is basically arapahoe avenue. Now, alternates with this closure in mind, northbound and southbound, are 55th street, cherryveil road and a little further off to the east, and it is a good option, if youre willing to check on a couple of extra miles, tack on a couple of extra miles. The backups are light right now, because folks are dealing with the closures and delays. And it could be an impact in the 6 00 and 7 00 hours. The rest of the drive, calm and quiet. A 14 minute trip across c470. Less than 10 minutes in golden. And gary, a live view here across the i70 drive near calm, and clear. So we are enjoying the view to the west side. I guess so. All right, thank you much for that. Breaking news this morning. A live look now at the aftermath of a very powerful and deadly earthquake that struck italy while were you sleeping. The 6. 2 magnitude quake rocked the center part of the country early this morning and they say dozens of people are still missing. As many as 37 were killed. That number is expected to go up. The town of the hardest hit. The mayor there says the destruction is so bad that the town quote isnt here anymore. And another strong earthquake today, this time in asia. The quake hit myanmar this morning. And people could feel the tremors as far away as thailand. Preliminary estimates show the quake registered a 6. 8. No word if anyone was hurt in this. 5 33. One person was shot in the month bellow neighborhood in denver. Police are now looking for the person who did it. Evening on Maxwell Place and the victim was taken to the hospital. We are trying to find out what condition that person is in. Nobody has been arrested. The biggest city in colorado to ban marijuana sales has changed course. The denver post reports Thornton City Council has voted 54 to allow Retail Marijuana shots and dont expect pot shops to show up on every corner. The max number of permits is four. Many Community Members went to the Council Meeting to speak against the city. They say it sets a bad exam money in the end and several say thornton needs the tax revenue from marijuana businesses and thornton is the sixth largest city in colorado. Kansas police and troopers are hoping to catch coloradans driving through the state with marijuana but the federal Appeals Court has put the brakes on that. And they did it pretty fast. The Police Wanted to stop drivers without a state license plate. If they were coming from places where marijuana is legal. Like colorado. Law enforcement cannot stop and search drivers just because they have a colorado license plate. And it is the result of a lawsuit filed by a driver from colorado against two kansas Highway Patrol officers. They stopped and searched his vehicle in the middle of the night. The court found the officers infringed on his rights. Getting denvers air as crisp and as clean and as fresh as the mountain air is going to take a lot of work. Governor John Hickenlooper plans to st gas pollution. He drafted a new executive order to cut Greenhouse Gases 35 over the next 14 years. Now, the Environmental Protection agency had similar goals for this state and all states, but lawsuits have put those plans on hold. And republicans want the governor to wait for those lawsuits to be resolved before pushing forward with his plan. Hotter and drier. Thats not the type of weather we need when you consider and our population keeps on growing. 9 News ReporterColleen Ferreira is at the denver Water Treatment plant where it takes a lot of work to make sure our olympicsized needs are met. Reporter good morning, guys. This is where a lot of the magic happens. Many of you dont know that the denver water has three drinking Water Treatment plants, and we are here at the one in denver, 24hour operation, and a lot goes on to make sure your water is clean and safe. On a 24 7 basis. I want to bring in pouty brubaker director here. And thanks. What exactly happens here . I see a lot of machines and a lot of stuff. So this is one of the three Potable Water plan force denver water which is a Drinking Water plant and we take water that comes from the snow melt in the mountains and comes through our process and we treat it sand send it out through the system. What you are looking at right now is part of the whole treatment process. You have had a pretty hot june and july. Pretty dry, too. How has that impacted you. So we are at normal average for denver water, it is 300 million gallons a day, per consumption. And this year, we are up to 3 a million gallons a day. And 350 million gallons a day and to give a visual aspect. It is like 200 olympic sized pools. And that is a whole lot of water. And i want to you keep in mind, throughout the morning, we will be talking about Different Things with the water plant. You can go to denver water. Org, and look at Water Quality reports. And you guys always have those available, trying to transparent as possible to everyone using your water. Coming up at 6 00, we know that Water Quality is top of mind for many of you. So we are going to go about showing you how they treat the water here, we are going to go down into the basement to really intricate process, so we will show that to you coming up at 6 00. Really interesting. Colleen was talking about denver waters efforts to maintain Water Quality. And the Colorado Department of Public Health and environment is their regulatory agency. When it comes to making sure the water is safe. And denver water regularly department of health. Now fort collins for a bit this morning, good morning to you guys, and cloudy in fort collins with the temperatures in the low 60s, to start the day. And a thunderstorm or a thunder shower i should say, this morning, or a light shower possible, during the morning, and again this afternoon, and headed into the low 70s, today. And up and down the front range, small periods of showers, moving through, for the morning and early afternoon. And a light rain shower possible, during the en begin to clear out. As far as total rain goes, not huge, a few of the luckier spots could see upwards of a third of an inch of rain before it is all said or done. The big change today in addition to the clouds will be temperatures, running the better part of a dozen degrees or more, below our average of 85 degrees. Marty, thank you much for that. And tens of thousands of firefighters are working to try and stop 100 wildfires across and 10,000 firefighters are on the ground, in california, some People Living in the evacuated areas say sometimes there is no time to get their families out. And crews say they are absolutely exhausted. When the real thing hits, you cant run fast enough. The firefighters have a balance of more than 30 days an does it take a toll . Absolutely. The u. S. Forest service has billion fighting fires this year. Some people in california are ignoring those Fire Evacuation orders. The chimney fire has already turned several homes into ash, in angelina in San Luis Obispo county. And there is not an accurate count yet of how many homes were destroyed. Mandatory evacuation orders should be taken seriously behavior. Some families though say it is just too important for them to stay back to protect their homes. Many that live in the area say dealing with fires is just part of their lives there. Unfortunately. It is 5 40 right now. The historic flooding in south louisiana is keeping kids out of class. Schools in East Baton Rouge Parish wont reopen until after labor day. Many of those kids parents are still salvaging what they can of their homes and one louisiana lawmaker wants to charge even re who rescued hundreds of others, while their own homes flooded. A looselyorganized group that call themselves the cajun navy worked to rescue flood victims using their own boat. And those volunteers cleared out entire neighborhoods. A state senator now wants to train and regulate and charge fees to those volunteers. He says it is a liability problem, if untrained, unregulated teams, are working as emergency rescuers. So many of those people are yes. That doesnt seem right, does it . So much video on the internet, people being so grateful that they came to their aid and i dont know if now is a time to charge a fee. They are volunteers again. Yes. 5 41 right now. Sports Authority Stores unfortunately closed. But the name lives on, on that stadium. But the broncos finally got the naming rights. So why is the stadiums name still Sports Authority . We start the new broncos season with the team playing in a stadium named after a store that doesnt exist anymore. The judge officially authorized the Denver Broncos to take back the naming rights for Sports Authority field at mile high but the team hasnt announced plans yet to actually change the name. The broncos made nearly 20 rights earlier this month. Sports authority filed for bankruptcy last march. And lost most of its stores. And the others are now closing. The broncos say they eventually want to sell the naming rights, but we dont know when. We have got to be the only super bowlwinning team with no stadium name and no quarterback. What is the deal . Hit the road and southbounders along 25 and 5th avenue are linking up with i70 in a calm fashion. No major problems across the downtown city side streets. However, a major closure affecting your boulder drive. Due to police activity. The s. W. A. T. Team is in place. Searching for a shots fired suspect. And because of that, Foothills Parkway is closed. That is colorado 157. It goes all the way from arapahoe, down to u. S. 36. And your best and easiest alternate routes to get around 5 49 right now. A pledge to the symbol of our country, it ended up causing a big controversy in one florida school. The school in tallahassee sent students home with this note. It allows students to opt out of reciting the pledge of allegiance. One parent posted it on social media. Upset that the school was offering the option to not say the pledge. The post has been shared more the School District said it was trying to fulfill a state mandate to inform parents of their rights. Now the social media backlash has had an impact. That School District is not handing out the slips anymore. And instead, they updated the student handbook, with state approved language about options to opt out of the pledge. A College Student in pittsburgh was just trying to impress a girl, but got him in trying to jump from one of the buildings roofs to another. Show off a little bit in front of the girl. But he fell in between the buildings. And he got stuck. The space between the buildings was less than two feet. And it took rescuers four hours to pull him out. They had to break through a wall. At qdoba. No word whether the girl will go out with him again. He had a broken ankle. Lost a few cool spots. Still trying to sort that what i get is the date didnt go all that well. A monsoon to the east, that is the pattern, very evident, through central texas, into kansas and missouri, where they have flash flood watches out this morning, and we have, on the backside of that system, small area of moisture, and actually came around from northern california, and the pacific, and it is rotating through colorado right now. And it will give us some showers this morning. And during the early part of the afternoon, and then again, and dries out for a bit. And again, some rain and it dries out and we wrap it up by 9 00, 10 00 tonight and as far as most rain, most folks a tenth of an inch or best and a few small better rain shafts and a quarter to a third of an inch. Cool for everyone. With 60s and 70s, at lower terrain. And above 7,000 feet and mostly in the 60s today. And the showers, throughout eastern colorado, and from the front range, and here on the i 25 corridor, and we will have have a few stragglers out west, later in the day, with light rain amounts there, and we are going to have the best stuff here, right on the front range. And 80s west. And 80s south. And 70s and 60s for the mountains, and here on the denver area, up toward fort collins. And 73, one or two periods of showers, today, and this afternoon, and this evening, and then partly cloudy, and actually chilly, night tonight. And the temperatures in the upper 40s. And we do have another friday. Afternoon showers. I like it for dry on saturday with. A foothills thunderstorm on sunday. And the weekend is a lot warmer. Thank you, marty. And ongoing though, along i25, right around the ramps, and pretty smooth this morning. And plenty of volume as we are starting to kick off this wednesday morning drive. As for i25, in that particular area, all the way up to downtown, you will see a northbound minutes, southbound traffic, about 14, with speeds in the mid60s. And across the maps here, we are calm and quiet, and most areas of our freeway drives are really looking light. And side street wise, we have one quick stall but it is an an intersection close to i25. Not affecting anybody in a significant way. And on top of that, our closure out to the west, still remains in place. And foothills, and 157 shut down, from arapahoe, road, down through u. S. 36, and both northbound and southbound directions, with the alternate 5 56. A display that gives new meaning to the term in living color. Crayons used as inspiration in a long standing form of art. Quilters behind this artwork, and members of the Rocky Mountains washtenagi quilt guild go came up with the inspiration from a box of crayons. It is called color my world. And made it at least 20 of her quilt. And the name translates into swa swahili to mean people who sew and they hope to inspire others to sew. And we want to pass the art form into the next generation of quilters and we welcome the community to come and join us with, and learn the art form of quilting. The parents of Corporal Nate Carrigan blamed the park county sheriff for his wife. And the sheriff reflects on one of the darkest days of his departments history.
