We will have to wait until after 5 00, to get them, any storms off the foothills and moving down here. We have another morning, with some action going on, in southwestern colorado. And there is a single storm th north and east of cortez, heading up to the purgatory ski area. And up north in wyoming, some thunderstorms are rolling on up north of larimer and torington. And the dense fog advisory from kit carson and burning off until the day goes on. And watch how the humidity increases in the mountain areas during the day. And thats because that little storm down south is just the beginning of several that will foothills during the afternoon. And through Summit County and kenosha pass and start to fizzle out a little bit as they move off the foothills and here on to the plains. Now there is a small chance for one or two severe storms to the north and east. Mostly wind being the issue. And so what are you going to be dealing with today, is the sun and the heat. And police tape spread across both directions and get around the closure with local side streets with just one block around the closure and use broadway and lincoln northbound a few Ballot Initiatives that might put the Current System up for a vote three months from today. 9 News Reporter Ferrer Ferrer is here to explain and two specific proposals this morning. Yes, possible changes to the open primary election and the president ial primary election if the things make it to the ballot. If the open primary Election Initiative makes its way to the ballot and it becomes a law, people who arent registered allowed to cast the votes in a primary election. And you remember in the primary a few months ago, you could only vote if you are registered with the party, the initiative would change that. Lets talk about the president ial primary election. The proposal would allow republicans, democrats and unaffiliated voters to vote in a primary. Putting on the election would cost the state and county about 5 million. The june primary for federal state and local elections, that would state completely the same. Colorado voters, we know you have a lot to say issues. The second of States Office has until september 7th, to verify signatures and determine if the initiatives will make it on the ballot in november. Ta rhonda . Thank you, colleen. For explaining. That there are several issues that could ind up on end up on the ballot in november and the last half hour we took a look at possible limits to fracking and the oil and gas industry and also up for, a constitution. And legalize suicides and more information on the issues on 9 news. Com. Denvers police chief wants to get ahead of the curve when it comes to watching who officers pull over and why. The chief announced new plans to collect data to determine whether officers actions reflect racial bias. We didnt have firm details how it would work, but the most critical part is efficiency and transparency. If it shows positive, i think that is a lot of if it doesnt show favorable, then we have a responsibility to correct it and im 100 committed in correcting it. Hopefully the information will show that we are not doing any kind of profiling. But i think at the very least it will speak to our commitment to being transparent. Cheryl preheim is in rio with more. Cheryl, she had a tough night. Reporter she did. You know, she didnt look like herself and we noticed that before, during, and after the race. Before the race, she looked i worked as hard as i could. Im proud of that. But letting my team down is very hard. I gave it all that i had and thats all i could ask for. You know, it says something about missy, in that moment, she is not thinking about herself, she is thinking about her team. And her team has always meant a team usa. And as she was standing there in tears, she was graciously applauding her teammate Katie Le Decky who is having the olympics of her life. I think that just says so much about missy, you guys. And one thing i have just been considering, is that really her secret sauce has been the joy of swimming. The love of the sport. Being free. Dancing behind the blocks. And this time around, she has been pretty candid about saying how the pressure, the expectation, and fighting back but she was really hopeful still, saying shes got more opportunities, there is a relay, and then her signature event is friday night. In the 200 backstroke. Absolutely. Two more opportunities. Thats a good thing. And a good thing that each though she was tearyeyed she was smiling through the whole thing. Still smiling. Still had the missy smile. No question. She is always looking for the positive. Not just for her, but for her teammates and i think colorado has a lot to be proud of. He got caught giving a South African swimmer a very angry look yesterday. Look at that. The swimmer was doing a little shimmy dance in front of the 1 time olympic Gold Medalist and thats the face. And people screen grabbed this really quickly on twitter and tweeted about how he was summoning the force. And plotting his revenge soon. I like that. Yes. Well, i dont know about that. But you got to put your game face on. It is kind of funny, isnt it . Later phelps seemed to listen to music and the happy zone, and maybe pondering all of the gold medals. Last laugh. Last scowl. Around here yesterday, pretty good storms in the foothills, this is up in Aspen Meadows yesterday, near aspen park and alisa gillmore with the shot, with hail covering the ground. Not especially large but it covered a lot of the area. Today the monsoons curved a little bit to the east of colorado. And the rest of it, it is being sucked into Tropical Storm javier. Which is down to our south. Thats why most of our day is going to be spent with sunshine, and we pop up into the 90s. Once again today. 89 degrees. Good morning. From beautiful copacabana beach in rio de janiero, brazil. Cheryl preheim and matt is here and we promised to bring you to the beach and here we are. This is the iconic copacabana beach and got its flame from the patron saint name from the patron saint here. And they named the chapel. And we wanted to show you more than the neighborhood. A suburb of rio. A suburb of rio de janiero. Yes. And it is just as known for the real cool black and white sidewalks that an artist did back in the 70s. To represent the African American and white cultures here. And sometimes you will see red interlaced throughout there, for the native brazilian culture and about 63 hotels, along this 2. 5 million stretch of beach. And it is obviously a very iconic place, where a lot of and party. And you think of young people here, and having such a good time, but about 25 of the residents here are over 60. So it is becoming a bit of a Retirement Community as well. And it it is amazing. First thing in the morning, so many people out. Exercising. A lot of joggers. We see joggers in flipflops here. We are told the locals do everything in flipflops. They take their morning run in flipflops as well as somebody with a boogie board heading out to the water, just to give you a little perspective. We are about an hour bus rio. Here to the beach. And we had to talk to you about one moment that we still cannot believe that happened inside the park. We wanted to show you. We are doing a nighttime tour of the park. And showing you the iconic rings and live on tv, this sweet family live on tv, they were from argentina and they took a picture and a section of the yellow ring falls off. Parent when your kid does Something Like that, to the most recognized symbol in the world. And dads, they run up and fix it and they got the family picture. Oh, my gosh. The nicest people that we met. And you know what we will do tarhonda and gary. We will take our shoes off and get in the sand and i might grab a volleyball, go back to my glory days and do my best and take you down to the water. And for the next hour and a half, we will take you around the beach. There are wonderful venues, and absolutely spectacular scenery. Oh, that sounds like so much oh, my goodness. You know, i read that when the Rolling Stones played there, a couple of years ig, a on the beach a years ago, on the beach, more than a Million People showed up and that over 60 thing, probably all of the neighbors showed up. You know, gary, it is funny that you mentioned that because rod stewart played here in 1994, 3. 5 Million People. The largest concert crowd ever. People love to party down here. I guess. Right now, the temperatures are in the low 70s now. It is very humid. They will tell you that it is plenty muggy in rio. Pretty much all the time on the water. And through the day we go, looking at a few showers to the south of the area today. And those are going to continue to move off through the afternoon and evening and we may see some showers there, and toow days in the rio area with temperatures in the low 80s and a front coming through tonight and into tomorrow, where we will have a few showers, and then we settle back into the 70s for the rest of the week. And closer to home, the sports fans, you can head out to broncos training camp, and kind of get the final tuneup, before they head to chicago, and it is going to be really warm this morning, and with the temperatures going from the mid 70s, to mid and upper 80s, down there, at, what is it, c. South of speer and just a little bit to the east of lincoln here. We want to get it all straight. Essentially a crash took place in a different location, and a car with only three wheels left parked over near speer and the driver called police for help. Caughted for a tow truck. Called for a tow truck driver. When the tow truck driver arrived on the scene, the tow truck driver called police. The driver of the original vehicle involved in the crash, apparently stabbed himself in the abdomen and thats why all of this investigation is taking place. And all of this information just came from the Police Officer on the scene. Speaking to our photojournalist here and we will have more details throughout the day and alternate route, take a block around, on either side if but if you would like to avoid the situation, broadway and lincoln, will definitely help. Lets check in with marty weather. Good morning, tarhonda, we have storms in southwestern colorado, and also in wyoming. This morning. We have big storms in logan county, last night. And one Inch Diameter hail. Near the nebraska border. We see a different pattern, today, with monsoon winds shifting a little more to the east and a lot of moisture being pulled through northern mexico, into Tropical Storm javier, which will continue to weaken today, as it moves up over the baja peninsula. There is a small storm down in southern colorado. Weaken. For us, a hot dry sunny day until 3 00 or 4 00 in the foothills and a couple of nice storms there and actually have a good shot at nice rain in the foothills unto a quarter of an inch or so. And then more wind, and lightning and thunder here, between 5 00 and 7 30 tonight, and less rain down here, at lower terrain, than in the mountains and foothills. And it would be nice to get cooled off here, after highs in the low to mid90s here. With 70s and 80s, in the foothills. And foggy over the eastern plains. Thats going to burn off. The center part of the state. From the front range through Summit County and southwestern mountains of colorado with one or two dying storms possible. Over the northeast this evening. We may actually see some strong gusty winds up along i76 tonight. And 90s over the east. And 90s out west. And 70s in the mountains. 94, most of the day is sunny and one or two storms during the evening and gusty winds, and cool you down a bit. And then we have a clear night, ahead, before we do it again tomorrow. And thursday, ly better chance for storms.
