That upslope event and snow increasing. Visibility has dropped to about 1 2 a mile in the metro area. Some other spots have the blue color, low visibility, very cloudy skies and with winds gusting 20 to 30 Miles Per Hour especially out towards Eastern Plains, that wind chill is making temperatures feel like the teens. So yeah, weve got winter in colorado. Its february here. Weve got 20s right now and as the sun goes down, those temperatures will get even colder and well see wet roads turn icy. So thats whats in store for that afternoon commute and heading into early this evening, snow will continue to go. As we look at these snow reports, i woke up this morning and went man and weve heard it certainly because weve been getting those emails wheres the snow . Its here. Its not falling at once. Its going to take some time. By top afternoon is when we are expecting for tomorrow afternoon is when we are expecting for this storm to yeah. I suppose patience is the word. We would be altogether disappointed if it didnt come, but thats all right. Weve got it. Thank you. Cdot crews say crews are working in snow shifts right now as they deal with all the winter weather. 9news reporter Maya Rodriguez and photojournalist tom cole have been out on the road all day and join us near i25 and arapahoe. Reporter things are not that bad out here, but so far were going about 35 miles an hour, the roads pretty clear most of the day and for the most part they still are, but it is starting to get a little slushy on i25. Cdot tells us their crews are working 24 hours a day through the duration of this storm for those of you preparing to head home during rush hour tonight, youre wondering if certain routes you take have been plowed, cdot does have a theyve installed tracking devices on more than 800 of their plows statewide. You can go to their website and see exactly where those plows are, what direction theyre heading and get where you need to go safe. Its an Automated Vehicle indicator and what that system does is it allows us to run more efficiently. It tracks our speed, how much gas we use, mechanical issues, routes our vehicles for us and allows us to deploy resources where theyre needed most and it allows us to share that information for the public. So we put online snow pile locations, so you can go onto a map, see where our plows are and answer that age old question of wheres the plow . This will give you the reporter right now cdot said theyre using chloride to make sure ice does not build up on the roads and say the heaviest snow is in southwest colorado but say this could change and expect conditions on the Eastern Plains to deteriorate as we move later through the day. All right. Thank you. Keeping track of the roads out there. Many of us have seen the clouds all around, thanks so much. Thats right. As the snow gets going this afternoon and again tonight people will be out shoveling their walks and their driveways. In the latest snowstorm to hit the east coast estimates indicate at least a dozen people died from physical problems as they were shoveling. 9news reporter Jessica Patel is joining us now and youre saying problems can actually begin within two minutes of shoveling. Reporter doctors say your latter rate can actually elevate heart rate can levels even after just a couple to unhealthy levels even after just a couple minutes of shoveling. When you shovel snow, you can drastically increase the risk of having a heart attack because doctors say youre doing heavy upper body work in really cold temperatures which constricts blood vessels and reduces blood supply. Snow shoving is actually the no. 1 snowrelated injury across the country. Around 200,000 people are treated for snow shoveling injuries every year. Most of those injuries are cardiac related. Some back problems are common. We want to give you some advice from an Orthopedic Surgeon from swedish. Limit the amount of work you have to do by starting shoveling early and often. I think thats probably the most important thing in looking at snow removal, particularly when youre anticipating a bigger storm. Reporter dr. Morgan says you dont want to wait till the snow piles up. Of course, its much easier to shovel 3 inches of snow than up to 14 which is what were expecting in some areas of the metro. With back or heart problems really shouldnt shovel at all, especially considering that we can see some of those adverse effects kick in even after just two minutes. Since youre so young and in such great health i decided you should do one of the shifts in my drive for me to save me from any potential danger. Reporter i will be there bright and early tomorrow morning and shovel your driveway. Youre on. I pay 20 bucks. Thanks. We hope youre prepared for this storm. So does the elizabeth Fire Rescue Team because if you get stranded, theyll have to come get you in a special vehicle. They acquired this snow cat through a military surplus program. Originally camoflauge firefighters painted it red and added lights, sirens and radios. This truck goes where ambulances cant go quickly climbing over snowed in driveways and big berms of snow. They expect to help many stranded drivers in the next 24 hours. An ambulance or an engine could get stuck and if we because its stuck, it puts our community at risk and our firefighters. It makes sense to have a go bag or some kind of preparedness bag in their vehicle even in the truck where you could have a snow shovel and some deicer and lots of different protective equipment. This thing is pretty cool. Look at it go. Firefighters expect the snow cat will be extremely busy as the storm picks up during the evening hours and evening commute. The vehicle can be used in many different types of scenarios including flooding. It has a top speed of about 30 miles an hour, so its pretty fast for its size and the equipment on it. It can be used during floods swimming 2 Miles Per Hour through pretty deep water. Denver police say a territorial dispute between two motorcycle clubs led to a fight and a shooting this weekend. Motorcycle expo was cut short by one day after one person died, three others were shot and one stabbed at the event. Dpd says no one man arrested as theyre still trying to figure the attorneys for the clubs involved are pointing fingers saying the other guys did it. Police say only one club is cooperating with the investigation. Sounds like it was more of a territorial type verbal altercation that started. I dont know if any of you were at the scene prior to this, but they had territories kind of set up where some of the motorcycle gangs that were out there that had certain areas and in appears at least based on the half that are talking to us that it started based on that altercation that turned physical pretty quick. The attorney for one of the clucks provided this photo to us clubs provided this photo to us, the aftermath of the shooting. Victor mendoza died. He lived in Colorado Springs at 1 month. A department of corrections employee was also a emergency of one club and was involved in the incident. We dont know if hes been placed on leave. Denver police are asking anyone who saw when happened or has as many as 300,000 iowans are expected to turn out for the president ial caucuses tonight. Thats just under half the population of denver. Based on the polls donald trump and Hillary Clinton will come out on top, but we could see moves from senator ted cruz and marco rubio on the republican side and, of course, senator Bernie Sanders on the democratic side. 9news political reporter Brandon Rittiman is in iowa and has more from an unusually tape trump rally today in waterloo tame trump rally today in water radio. Reporter kind of a surprise almost half the in waterloo. Reporter kind of a surprise almost half the seats were empty, but it is a workday and because of the fog trump wasnt able to take his plane with his name emblazoned on the side. He did seem grateful to the people who showed up, a bit of like he tried to temper expectations. First of all, iowa is a great state with the most fantastic people and i must say win, lose or draw i love you folks all. Reporter still trump kicked down the issues that built so much support with him. He talked about the wall to be built with mexico he wants mexico to pay for it. He talked about religion saying hell spend less and get more results and he talked about religion and the support hes received from evangelicals in iowa. If trump steamed subdued today seemed subdued today, so did his rival ted cruz. Is this a must win state for you . Of course not. From the beginning we approach all four states. Were all in iowa, new hampshire, South Carolina and nevada. Weve got an Incredible Team on the ground. I think well do well in each of the first four states. Well see how it plays out. For the two gop frontrunners to be cautious because the one who walks away with the win will turn out the most supporters at the caucuses that start two hours from now. In waterloo, iowa, Brandon Rittiman, 9news. Brandon will have more coverage of the caucuses tonight on 9news at 5 00, 6 00, 9 00 and 10 00 and wrap up on the morning show tomorrow morning. There was a minor crash this afternoon, a broncos brush was involved in a crash in sunny bus was involved in a crash in sunnyvale, california. Broncos insider mike klis said the accident started when a motorcycle cut off the Police Escort and caused a Chain Reaction with multiple player buses. The teams Vice President of Public Relations said the broncos team buses were involved in a minor accident on the way back from practice. The team is back at the hotel. Okay. All good. It just makes it interesting, as mark says. He hasnt taken a snap yet at the super bowl, but it is all about the pants. Cam has got them talking about the pants. He is the quarterback, of course, for the panthers wearing a very unique pair of pants when he arrived. So while in San Francisco we asked 9news reporter matt renoux if he could find some cam pants. Where matt goes now i dont know. Reporter kim, it was a pretty strange thing to do i deed. It was like the weirdest thing ever, you indeed. It was like the weirdest thing ever, you know, try to go out and find some cam pants, but had to be at the top of my list actually as far as strange things go. Went all morning looking for cam pants high and low in escalators in San Francisco, and then i found something, a decent pair that i can maybe fit into because at a super bowl you got to have some style even if you dont have the fashion credentials of cam newton. Found myself today standing all by myself, but thats what you get when you break out like im trying to do in the cam pants. Give you a little look at what we ended up with. How you doing, sir . As i walked through San Francisco, i noticed a lot of people admiring my pants. Hi. This is what they look like right there, beautiful, beautiful cam newton, not quite what he was wearing, but they breathe real nicely and theyre quite comfortable. Kim and mark, ever since i got them this morning ive been wearing them and they mighting my favorite pair. Did you might be my favorite pair. For those . Reporter i got them on same, 24. 99. While i was Walking Around a few minutes ago a local rap star willy hilton and dj jay fresh loved them so much they gave me a cd. Hes taking home swag now thanks to the pants. Reporter what do you think of my pants . I really love them. Reporter you like my pants . I love my pants. Read . Reporter i would love something to read while i enjoy myself with these pants. Mold on, ill come right back because im hold on, ill come right back because im live now in denver, colorado. Your pants are developing a fan club, even better. Reporter im honestly surprised im not drawing a larger crowd right now. Matt, theres a reason they thats all good. Thanks. Matt renoux live in San Francisco. It was christine nole that made the comment yesterday just because theyre expensive doesnt mean they look good. When thats all you can see when someone is walking towards you those were 900 bucks. They do scream im here, though. Yes, they do. The shoes that came with them, did you see the shoes . Yes. They matched the outfit if you didnt see the shoes. Now matt is making his own statement giving denver a shout out. He is fashion forward. More than 3,000 miles from denver you will find a fanatic broncos fan and his family on the Hawaiian Island of on a Hawaiian Island. A lot of you will remember projector wolfe. And stumbled on the broncos fan living the island life. He even lives in a blue house. His mom is from colorado. His home is where the family and other island fans all come together for all the bronco games. A lot of broncos fans. They actually call this bronco headquarters. We got a banner over there my cousin had made. Everybody gets here and we cheer on the broncos and we go hard. He said sometimes they do that from 7 a. M. On. Thats the time the game starts in hawaii. Michael says his 10yearold fan is possibly an even bigger fan than he is now. He and his son saw their first broncos game at Sports Authority field this season and, of course, theyll watch the big game on sunday from the island bronco headquarters. I want to go visit there. You actually know somebody you can go visit. Kim knows people in remember im calling mitchell. If you end up spending a lot of time on the roads in the next 24 hours, you wont necessarily have to be upset about gas prices. Thats coming up as we head to break. There are new warnings today about the spread of zika virus. The World Health Organization said the outbreak merits being declared an international emergency. This follows a possible link between the zika virus and a surge of number of babies born with abnormally small heads. Experts say theres still no definitive proof of the zika virus being responsible, but there. Could be 4 million cases of zika in the americas in the next year. The cdc says women who are pregnant or attempting to become pregnant should consider postponing travel to places where zika has been detected. The cdc announced today it declared the outbreak of e. Coli illness linked to denver based chipotle restaurants over. About 60 people reported getting sick over a period of several months, the most recent illness reported in december. The cause is still under preparation at more than 1,900 locations. The chain also plans to close one full day one week from today just for training. Not that a road trip would be a great idea today, but with all the snow it may be a good idea to start planning one because gas prices right now are the lowest they have been since 2009. The Denver Business Journal says right now gas is 1. 80 a gallon nationally. Thats the average. Here in colorado its even cheaper about 1. 71 a gallon. You can find it for less than that and 1. 65 in denver itself. Expert as tribble the low prices to two things. Theres an experts attribute the low prices to two things. Theres an excess of oil in the market, its a glut and its in the winter when few people are taking trips and another upside is the money we are saving on gas is helping our somewhat beleaguered economy. What theyre saying is that for 2016 this year compared to to spend about 27 billion less on our gas tanks than we did last year. Thats money that we can spend going out to eat, going to movies, on shoes, on clothing, on improvements to our house. So i think that this is going to have a really big economic impact. The Denver Business Journal also predicts that gas should increase in price by the summertime to about 2. 50 a gallon which is a big jump from where it is now. That number is below however. So maybe you can plan on a road trip when things start to warm up. I remember 2. 50 a gallon. Youre right. You spend the money typically in other places. This is also the start of black History Month. Next well explore honoring black heroes in our own community. And the snow showing no signs of stopping through the evening commute. They are the stories that shape our world, but many of them go untold. 9news is proud to share diverse stories throughout the year. During black History Month we love to shine the light on this subject as well and joining us today 9news reporter tarhonda thomas, photojournalist byron reed. Were so glad you guys can do this and bring you out from behind the camera, byron. The stories are great again this year, just incredible stories for black History Month. We wanted to give people a preview of what weve been working on and there are so many stories we hear about from people in the community. Thats why we wanted to let people know about this whole thought is black History Month still relevant . Is it something we still need because we hear that question a lot . We got a story we think answers that question. Its from a gentleman who is part of a movement called black futures where its not just looking at stories that weve love those stories, its also looking at people who are doing things right now who are part of black history and black futures. So thats a story im excited to share this year. Thats so important when you talk about that next future. Byron, you worked with 9news reporter Nelson Garcia on another story and interviewed a man who has shown how hard hes fought to make change. Yes. Nelson and i went up to wyoming and we found this story about a great group of young men and they are called the black 14. So 1969 the university of wyoming Football Team undefeated that year so far and they were nationally ranked that year. Also there was a lot of civil rights movements going on and protests. So these young 14 Football Players wanted to show their solidarity through a small simple for one of the protests and so they wanted to tie black arm bands on their jerseys. The coach got wind of this immediately and kicked them off the team. So we sat down with john griffin who lives here in perspective on that year, the friendships and bonds created and some that were broken after that. It was a really interesting conversation. We look forward to telling you the story. We talked about food, tarhonda. This food is really an important part. Well are going to be surprised by this, how food can really tell a story of history and black history is no different from any other history in terms of the food. So we talked with a man who prides himself on being a soul food scholar. He said he lectures across the country. His name is adrian miller. He can explain things from why people like my mother, grand mother, great grandmother, there are no recipes for anything. Its all in your heart and soul, soul food. If you didnt learn it, you missed out. So many of these things are could find at a point of history where equality wasnt even thought of. Now theyre caught of as delicacies. People are really into history, period, young people are. So throughout the month and youll feature all these stories like this. Yes. We do have a Successful Campaign called history makers. The first is fannie mae bragg, founder of the cots ton club and marlon bristol, the first black quarterback to star in the nfl. And he was with the broncos. A lot of people have no idea about that. The next one is otho rice. He brought the june teen celebration to five points and the final is one of my favorites, pam grier. Story who appeared in many tv from east high school. Shetch talks about that often which is so wonderful. Thank you for reminding us about all of these things that are connections, all of our colorado. We want to hear other peoples stories, too. Well ask you throughout month the month to email us your black history throughout the well, this is a little adventure we call it. Yes. Not too bad right now. A lot of people have really said you know what . Maybe i can work from home leave early. This is Maya Rodriguez and tom cole out there on the streets the conditions in the mousetrap not too bad, but as you can see, the roads very wet and its very cold and thats whats going to be the turning point. Yup. Theyve got a lot of chemical down fortunately and that might save us in the rush hour and we keep having pauses as this thing organizes for tonight. Its ranging in intensity right now, but this evening it will really pick up. Within the next two hours after that sun sets is when well start to see those roads look very differently becoming more icy and difficult to navigate. I have a fun fact for you. You remember last february . I was out reporting in it. Last february was the snowiest february weve had on record when we had 22. 4 inches. It is a brand spanking new month and a snowy start. February is usually the fifth snowiest month on average with the amount of snow were forecasting, well be at or above that average snowfall by tomorrow afternoon. Now heres that snow falling along i25, i76, i70 into the high country and into the Eastern Plains. Our friends to the north and to the northeast also getting in on the action. We have travel advisories issues across the state and even for our neighbors. A closer look and youll see the snow in the metro area is light now, but in Northern Colorado that snow has been steady, moderate to heavy at times, also seeing stronger bands set up out towards deer trail and for our friends out in wray and burlington. 7 1 2 inches for allenspark and monument to the south of us about 7 inches. Our friends in the high country i just saw a Facebook Post from my friend, she said tomorrow is a snow day for me. Although its hard to see here on doppler 9 because our radar between the mountains, we do have that snow falling. At dia snow falling with temperatures that feel like 14 degrees when you factor 22 mile perhour winds, 28 is the actual temperature out here in the backyard. Any snow that we have is blowing sideways. It is very light. Our temperatures are at 27 degrees. Lets check the weather across the state starting off with our highs today, we only managed to hit 30 degrees when our normal high is 44. Our current temperature is in the 20s, but factor in the wind. It feels like the teens. So it is a winter day. As we go throughout the rest of the afternoon, those temperatures will tumble in the mid20s closer to 9 00 and through this evening were still going to see temperatures possibly in the low 20s and in the teens with that snow varying in intensity but still falling. Heres what we have setting up. If youve lived in colorado a while, you know about the southeast flow. If youre new to the state, ill fill you in. The storm now is centered over storm system will gradually move into southeast colorado through this evening while at the center of the storm centered there it puts us in a good position to see upslope. What is that . Its wind coming in from the west that is forced upwards in elevation. That air expands, cools and basically what that does, it produces a lot of snow for us here on the front range and for the foothills as far south as palmer divide as well. So this is what were seeing. Its a classic upslope storm, but the heaviest snow is expected into this evening and for tomorrow morning. Now the high country is saying man, well share some snow with you. They have had abundant snowfall. In purgatory 27 inches in the past 24 hours. In steamboat larry pierce says that snow has not stopped. You get it . I love that picture. Here is a look at the 48 hour snow reports from the high country, well over 2 feet in yet. We do have travel advisories so were still going to see very physical conditions to mountains. Now all that heavy snow and very strong winds is loading up our snowpack and we have very high avalanche danger especially for our central and southern mountains. So backcountry travel really not advised flare and above tree line pretty much the next several near and above tree line pretty much the next several days. Heres a look at the snow coming in from the south still through this afternoon and evening. Then overnight and through tomorrow morning with the winds shifting becoming more easterly we start to see that snow just becoming a bit more heavier. For tomorrow mornings drive were going to see some icy slippery roads not only in the metro area, Northern Colorado, i76, i70 and in the high country as well along i80, too, in parts of wyoming and in nebraska. By tomorrow afternoon around noon when that winter storm warning is lifted, then well start to see that snow start to morning we could see 7 to 14 inches. Out in the backyard we already had 3 inches. So we arent that far from hitting that range. 13 will be your overnight low with that heavy snow just kicking in. The temperatures tomorrow only getting to 24 degrees. So you still got to send the kids with the winter gear to school, of course. Thats common sense, but also the snow boots in case they have to play outside. 1 potential inch of snowfall is expected. By the time its done were looking at accumulations that look Something Like that. So ive been getting tweets and emails saying where is the snow . The snow is by the end of the storm. Were expecting to see those amounts by tomorrow afternoon. How timely, tomorrow is ground log day. Well, punxsutawney phil, i dont know what youll say, but it will be chilly temperatures through friday. The payoff is saturday, a high of 46 degrees. Ill be happy tomorrow. It is fitting, this winter. Its like here we go. It is. Its supposed to be our fifth snowiest month. Last year it was the snowiest and this year a pretty snowy start. Well see how the rest of the month pans out. Yes, it is. Well keep an eye on it. A lot of kids were hoping on a snow day. You may need a bigger hat before tomorrow. Probably. My kids stayed in bed just a side note this morning because they thought they didnt need to go to school. Boy, were they upset. Surprise. Isnt that a bummer when you lets go. Tomorrow. Home is live. If not, mom will hear it. Ill bet. We are expecting slushy snowy roads for the evening commute, probably be a slow one. Report report jessica oh is this is a busy intersection i25 and logan and the streets have a lot of chemicals on them. Will give the plows a head start later tonight when the snow really starts to fall. My gut says a lot of people are at home. Checking out early. They said i dont need to do this. Why fight it . 9news reporter jessica oh is live near sixth avenue and kalamath in denver with a look at current conditions. How is it looking out there, jessica . Reporter its moving along just fine, kim. Its cold and snowing very lightly in denver like it has been throughout the day. Its certainly not as cold as those arctic temperatures we have experienced in denver in the past, but it is winter and it is cold. Lets get a quick look at your drive. We havent noticed too many issues, just heard about a few accidents weather related here and there but nothing too serious. Have seen a couple ambulances pass by as well. The roads themselves seem to be doing pretty fine. If you take a look, you see that the roads are wet but certainly not ice or snow covered, which is good news. Of course, that can change with temperatures dropping back into the teens and winds expected to pick up, visibility could be impacted, especially tomorrow morning, kim and mark, and it could hurt your commute, too. You may want to pack some time before you head into work tomorrow. Yup. I think thats how its going to play out. So far, so good. Weve been very lucky. Thanks, jessica. Or go in late or dont go in at all. I apparently am focused on not doing anything. Ill call you tomorrow. I want to stay away from it. Its been a fun day. True love does last a lifetime especially if you are born a bronco fan. Thats right. Next the story of one of our colleagues and how he has the the broncos, of course, in long time fans, of course, getting ready for the game. 9wants to know photojournalist kevin vaughn has a look back at a lifetime love affair with denvers Football Team. The helmet was a christmas president , part of a football uniform my parents gave me in 1970. By then i was already hooked on the home team. Dave costa was my first favorite player and my mom sewed his no. 63 on my jersey. After the 1971 season costa was off to san diego, but my allegiance to the Denver Broncos was just beginning. I went to my first game in 1975 right here. This is a parking lot now, but for more than 40 years it was the home of the broncos. Ive never forgotten the first time i walked through the gates. Cosell and the Green Bay Packers coached by bart starr. I experienced the madness when the orange crush ranged supreme and the m m connection, when the broncos made those miracles happen. Orange crush mania is just about ready to begin. All the way to the super bowl. All these years later my pennant and program from that game take me back. They have a 1st and 10 at their own 15yard line. I was here in 1984 when a blizzard buried the broncos and the packers. I went to the last game at old mile high and the first one nextdoor in 2001. I experienced the ups and the downs, superbowls that ended with scores like 3920 and 55 10 and 438. And two other super bowls where my team won. [ cheering and applause ] but i didnt experience any i shared it with hundreds of thousands of other broncos fans and with the people closest to me. I rooted alongside my wife all these years. I watched our daughter dance in a broncos cheerleading outfit and now i watch her daughter cheer for our team. I took our sons to their first games just as my dad had taken me to mine. Now the broncos are headed back to the biggest stage and ill be glued to the tv watching with people i love clearing with the enthusiasm of that little boy out in the front yard tossing a football. Parts of the metro area and Northern Colorado could see 7 to 14 inches of snow before tomorrow afternoon. That means not always a pleasant time on the roads out heres the good news. The commute is not terrible. Heres the bad news. Its probably going to get worse before it gets better. This is a live look across the metro area. This is kind of the way its looked all day. Its kind of like chinese water torture. Every hour you get another bucket on your head. Theyve done a really good job with the roads and theyre very passable. I dont think well have too much trouble getting home. When youre opening up a jar of something youre sprinkling on and you get some and get some and all of a sudden the whole top falls off and youre like what . I did not want it all at once. Well wait and see. Were keeping track of it. Its not bad out there now. Just take it really slow and especially on the side streets and on and off ramps, the same thing we tell you all the kind.
