For more than seven months several thousand people have gathered in the dakotas near a remote native american reservation. One that the pipeline will pass the water shed, the source of drinking water. The other argument is that this pipeline is going through land that once belonged to these native americans under a treaty that depending on how you look at it was either breached or renegotiated several times since then. But concerns about potential water contamination there pushed it further south closer to the standing reservation. So they have these legal claims that are strong claims, but they dont have the jurisdictional ability to say no this cant happen because its within our territorial values.
