Ok coming up I wanted to give a special shout out to my best friend from back home in on our of her late father who we are going to celebrate the anniversary of his Passover unfortunately tomorrow he was such a wonderful wonderful man he was like a 2nd father to me he was brilliant he was hilarious he was such a great father and a really marvelous human being who was taken much too soon but one of his many many fantastic qualities and imprints that he has left on his family his daughters in particular and also me in directly is his love of music and I know he would have been so so excited for me to have this radio show and be sharing music in rooting for the underdogs when it comes to musicians here at k.c.i. Today's is pretty fun I want to talk a little bit about the June 1962 escape from Alcatraz since we are in California obviously Alcatraz is a northern California and San Francisco but I do think that this is a really fascinating story the Wikipedia article is fantastic so I'm going to be according from that a bit. If only because it makes use of words like Pearl lowing I mean when is the last time you Feds think with the word per point and it anyway I had been told for years that the only people that had ever successfully escape from Alcatraz were actually from Alabama to dispel the myth that all of us Alabamians are stupid to the contrary in a we're the only ones that managed to escape from Alcatraz So we're quite resourceful and smart but it does in reading about it does not seem to be the case that the people who were from Alabama specifically the mastermind was born in d.c. And then spent some of his time in Florida and Georgia Louisiana so the general south and then the coconspirators some of the other. Folks that planned in non-committed this scape they were also from the Georgia Florida area they may very well have had some connection to Alabama it looks like there were a couple of these guys were arrested in Alabama for robbing some banks but I don't know that they were necessarily Alabamians to their core but they were Southerners it does appear and they actually all got to know each other when they were serving time in Atlanta prison together right so these as you can imagine are pretty hardened criminals it seems like a lot of bank robberies a lot of narcotics armed robbery fleeing you know kind of the the real criminals of their day so what exactly happened while they were transferred over to Alcatraz together in December 1901 and the for folks who manage this escapes of those Frank Morris he was the mastermind there were John and Clarence Anglin they were brothers and then there was Allen West so they all 4 had cells that were close to each other and once they all got transferred over to Alcatraz they immediately started formulating their plan for how they were going to escape Ok so what they did is they started as many successful escapees do by essentially trying to dig their way out of their cells so they start stealing things on these guys are very resourceful so let me read you a sentence from the Wikipedia over the subsequent 6 months after being placed together in the cells in December and then widened the ventilation box beneath their scene using discarded salt blades found on the prison grounds metal sp.
