victims, families, but we begin with ktvu is jana katsuyama with new information about the suspected gunman and his past, jenna. that's right, mike. there was a community prayer service tonight for the victims. and we also as you mentioned, learned quite a bit more about the suspect and his history of violence. new details emerged tuesday about the suspect 66 year old tune, leizhou, the san mateo sheriff said zhao was a co worker of some of the victims. all of the evidence. we have points to this being the instance of workplace violence. the mou was employed. the sheriff says. the suspect, who turned himself in monday, was a resident of half moon bay . the semiautomatic handgun was illegally purchased, and owned officials announced that the seven victims killed for at the mountain mushroom farm and three at the concord farms. a few miles away on cabrillo highway. we're all adults, five men and two women victims were adults and a mixture of hispanic and asian descent. 42 year old wanna. zavala was working at concord farms monday. she was too scared to speak. so her ex husband explained those moments when the gunman entered come inside to the green's house. man, he said. oh, you almost ready done. then we have to say yes, we are homeless, ray. then he got in and then go outside again. then when he came by again he showed us person in the head and then those guys come to the ground. he do again. in the head appears to have had a history of violence in march, 2013, a former coworker and roommate, filed for a temporary restraining order against him in santa clara county court records, the roommate states, mr zhao said he would use a kitchen knife to split my head. the roommate also stated that mr zhao attempted to suffocate me with his pillow for a few seconds, causing me to have difficulty breathing. and the former coworker said zara was making threats of making life difficult at work and threatening to kill me if i don't get him his job back. the coast side lutheran church tuesday night in half moon bay and interfaith service brought the community in pain together in prayer, horrific it's incomprehensible. the damage that this does to the spirit. i love that. you know, everyone came together and wants to pray together, and he'll about how to be involved in the community also was praying for the eighth victim who was injured. he is at the hospital, and the sheriff says that he is stable after undergoing surgery. the district attorney today said that zhao is scheduled for arraignment tomorrow at 1 30. in redwood city, mike and jenna did the sheriff's department at all come out today to talk about the state of mind of the suspect. is he cooperating with detectives up to this point? there hasn't been a lot of information about that. mike and the district attorney said that they are not planning to share many details. they want to try this in court and not in the public. he says. 1 30 tomorrow we'll be there. alright. jana katsuyama live tonight in half moon bay, jenna. thank you. california senator dianne feinstein has reintroduced a bill to ban assault weapons nationwide. the legislation would restrict the sale of military style assault weapons. and high capacity magazines. senator feinstein also reintroduced a companion bill called the age 21 act, which would raise the minimum age to buy an assault style weapon from 18 to 21, the same requirement that currently exists for handguns today, california congressman kevin mullin said lawmakers need to act on the federal level. to strengthen gun laws. too many deaths. too many guns available . yes mental health is part of the equation, but we need we need action. we need it now. senator feinstein was the author of the original assault weapons ban that was in place between 1994 and 2004. the coastal community of half moon bay grieves. many members are stepping up to support the families impacted by the shootings. ktvu lamonica peters joins us now live in downtown half moon bay, where people have been leaving flowers and candles in remembrance of the victims, lamonica. i'm at mac dutra plaza , and this is sort of a meeting place for farm workers. they come here just to relax and to catch up with each other. but tonight it's become a place where the community can count to mourn the seven people who lost their lives. residents in half moon bay say it's a quaint and quiet farming community, and what happened here on monday has left them all and total disbelief. we don't bug anybody ? we don't you know, we're just come together and we're very tight community and we like each other and it's it doesn't happen here. who's going to think about farm workers being victims of mass shooting? i mean, we don't know the motives behind it. about you know, the whole city have been made that the coast you know, we are hurt. we are grieving nor the loss of our family members. investigators say the deadly shooting that left seven people dead is a case of workplace violence. it was also one of three mass shootings in california in a three day span. now people say they want to focus on doing everything they can to support the families who have been impacted. people are just whether it's money or their time or both. it's just everyone is jumping in, and everyone is really making this a strong community family of hundreds of families in this community that are outraged and want to dig deeper to understand the grief that's happening in our farm worker community, mccarthy says. they all hope to figure out what's behind the tragic shooting. but in the meantime, helping the families is their priority, got protein drinks. apple sauce, granola bars, the farm workers and families who worked and lived where the shooting happened on inside, the union says some employees are still being underpaid after the district switch to a new payroll system and also says their wages are still less than their counterparts in the city. a lot of our members are like i said the lowest paid employees of the city and county of san francisco, and it's hard for them to live in san francisco, with the rest being so high, but inflation rates being so high. it's very difficult. some of some of my members have 2 to 3 jobs. the district says it has set up a new command center designed to help employees who are having payroll issues still to supervisor matt dorsey introduced a measure that would allow the city to match any police officer recruitment bonus offered by other northern california cities. supervisor dorsey says his proposal would draw in more officer candidates and prevent what he calls a catastrophic staffing shortage in the future. mayor matt mehan took part in the annual census. list of homeless people in santa clara county before dawn this morning. the point in time censuses, a coordinated effort to count the number of homeless on one single day. the count includes both people living on the street as well as in shelters. and today, the mayor and other volunteers counted on house people at the guadalupe river park, the mayor said. it is important to know how many people need help. we can't develop common sense solutions to homelessness. if we don't understand the scope of the issue, which is why it's so important that we are out here today, counting very specifically how many people are out here and then following up to understand who's here? why they're here? what kinds of support they need. last year. this count found 10,000 homeless people in santa clara county with 6000 of those in the city almost 50 years. that's right. cold case inspectors hope a big reward and a new sketch will finally lead to an arrest views. amberleigh spoke with the sister of one victim still searching for those answers. there might be that person. on the beach police call to 911 dispatches from a man reporting a dead body found at ocean beach in san francisco. the first homicide committed january 27th 1974 by a serial killer that preyed on gay men. it's a little chilling to me. i mean, it's uh, middle of its late january. it's pretty cold out. it's very late in this person's walking around the beach police cold case, investigators say the 911 caller is a person of interest and over the next 17 months, five other men were killed, most the same way, stabbed multiple times at the speech and elsewhere. the victims included fred cape in a decorated vietnam vet who worked as a nurse and joe stevens at 27 , year old female impersonator and cabaret performer. it feels good that somebody cares. it felt like nobody cared. steven's sister, melissa han rath, says she's grateful investigators are looking for new leads, she says at the time of the killings. there was not much attention on this case because of negative attitudes towards the gay community. lots of sorrow. a lot of um heartache pain. it's just horrible. police say there are two additional victims who survived being attacked in two separate incidents took place here at the fox plaza. apartments with the victims lived. one survivor was able to provide a description of his attacker to police. a new updated sketch was released tuesday, and the reward has been increased to $250,000 for information leading to the killer. investigators say they are looking for people who called police. after the original sketch was released. people have been disappearing from the bars lately. sometimes there have decayed bodies show up later on a beach, mark abramson read from a book he wrote about life in san francisco during that era. i don't think it really made the papers back then it was mostly talked about the killer was called the doodler. police say the suspect had told one survivor that he was in art school, studying to be a cartoonist. a lot of different stories that are out throughout the years have come out. in regards to this guy was in purpose in restaurants and he's drawing guys. that's not the case. investigators say they have a strong person of interest in mind and that he is alive and living in the bay area, steven's sister says. when the killer is caught, he wants to know why he killed conference this afternoon, oakland mayor xiang tao said she was heartbroken with the senseless violence. officials say the shooting happened around six o'clock last night at a gas station at seminary macarthur boulevard, where a music video was being filmed. the acting police chief says there were 40 to 50 people at the scene when the gunfire erupted. while the recording was occurring, gunfire broke out. from multiple shooters in various directions. when officers arrived on scene. they located several casings, but at the time, no victims investigators say those shooting victims later turned up at hospitals. one person 18 year old mario navarro, was killed and tonight no arrests have been made. we suspect that there may be a gang connection. so ceasefire will be coordinating the activities of the oakland police department. in our response to this particular incident. at least six other people were affected by the shooting, including a car and a business hit by stray bullets and a driver and passengers were injured in a car crash trying to avoid the gunfire. francisco board of supervisors has approved a plan to build tens of thousands of homes in the city over the next eight years. the board voted unanimously in favor of the plan. it would require the city to build 10,000 housing units every year through 2031 with a total of 82,000 homes. more than half of them would be earmarked for low end come in moderate housing subsidies. the supervisors have to sign off on it again next tuesday before sending it to the mayor's office for final approval. the mayor says she supports the plan, she said in a statement. in part quote, we can no longer rely on past thinking to get anywhere near building 82,000 homes over eight years. i am hopeful for the work that lies ahead and optimistic about what we can do. still to come and unprovoked attack in san francisco police searching for this man caught on camera shoving a senior citizen to the ground plus i believe eagles coaches take on the niners rookie later in sports. round. investigators released this surveillance video of that attack. it happened january 8th. you can see the victim, a 78 year old man walking with the cane when the suspect strikes him with enough force to knock him down. the suspect, then gathers up belongings on the sidewalk and leaves. it happened on a toma street near new montgomery. fortunately the victim was not seriously hurt. the suspect is described as a white or latino man in his late thirties to early forties. with a short beard information tonight about an incident at richmond high school teacher was fired after video shows him throwing a student right to the ground. as ktvu cristina rendon reports. it was one word that sparked the confrontation. a peaceful protest at richmond high school tuesday, led by the black student union, as seen in this video posted to twitter by a staff member. the student who organized the sit down tells me they're protesting the use of the n word on campus after a student allegedly used the racial slur when talking to a black substitute teacher. it wasn't right for that work to get tossed around, and it just goes around campus. substitute is seen on video, grabbing the student, throwing him to the floor and forcibly removing the team from the classroom. a spokesperson for the west contra costa unified district said the substitute was immediately fired and the student is okay. the incident is under investigation. i believe that there is no one side to pick and i know that they are both at fault. things escalated , and i think he was just at his limit because richmond high that where it does get tossed around a lot, so we just wanna just stop it. it's just it's not right. the incident happened monday during an ethnic studies classes for freshmen. the substitute has not been identified. but students tell us his name was mr campbell, and he was reportedly an assistant football coach. he was actually very well respected by other students. everybody loved him. this student says he understands why the substitute was pushed to a breaking point, but says it's no justification for his actions . overall, i just think it could have been handled better. the black student union advisor says the peaceful protests started during the lunch hour and lasted until the end of the school day. they came up with the chance we stop, you stop and hopes this sparks of culture change on campus. we don't want to normalize it. it's no longer normal to use this word right if we don't want others to use it, because now it's being used out of context, and it's being used for harm. and so if we stop, hopefully others will stop. richmond police are handling the criminal side of the investigation and say this could be a misdemeanor battery case. it will ultimately be up to the da's office to decide whether charges will be filed in richmond, cristina rendon ktvu to news san jose police say san francisco 49ers defensive end charles amina, who was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic violence yesterday. investigators say they responded to the report at 4 30 yesterday afternoon at san santana row when they arrived. a woman told them that a man who was her boyfriend and that he had pushed her to the ground during an argument. she said she hurt her arm but refused medical attention. police say a man who gave a statement and was cooperative. he was arrested and has since posted bail. what classify this as a misdemeanor and not a felony is there was not a visible injury. there was the mirror complaint of pain that classifies that changes the classification from a felony to a misdemeanor. police say the case will be submitted to the district attorney's office for possible charges. santa clara county granted the woman and emergency protective restraining order must testify for the third day in the class action lawsuit by tesla shareholders. shareholders claim they were misled about plans for tesla to go private ktvu is brooks jarocz was at the courthouse and has the story. elon musk emerged from the federal building in san francisco, asking more than answering listening. what do you think any more comments? i can't comment, you know, because it's legal stuff comes after three hours in a third day on the witness stand, must defending himself against a class action lawsuit alleging he misled tesla investors sparked by a 2018 tweet about the possibility of taking tesla private funding secured while questioned by his attorney must painted the picture. he's trustworthy, informative and able to raise plenty of money to pursue his plans. what the defense was trying to do was to paint mister musk tweets as innocent that he did not deliberately trying to off. the judges already told the jury those tweets are false, letting jurors decide if must deceived investors. and cause them financial losses, but really will matter here is whether he made a good connection with the jury or not. are they inclined to believe him? or not, you see, college of law professor david levine says it's going to come down to musk's behavior and actions. was it reckless and untruthful or an innocent mistake? i think it would have been better if he had said it was an innocent mistake rather than go up against the judge's ruling that the tweets are false because then the jury is put in the position of disbelieving the judge if they're going to believe mr musk musk told jurors . i had no ill motive, and my intent was to do the right thing for all shareholders. despite getting grilled previously by the plaintiffs, attorneys, musk brushed it off, reminding jurors investors who held tesla shares in 2018 did extremely well if they held onto the stark let it go blanchard reports. some say this latest discovery indicates problems with the entire classification system. more classified items have been found. former vice president mike pence is the latest to report his team discovered classified documents in his home from his time in office that should not have been there. the documents were immediately turned over when mike pence found me. the first up here wednesday, the director of national intelligence will brief the senate intelligence committee, though it is unclear if she will disclose anything about the classified document investigations in washington. lauren blanchard, fox news the executives of live nation were on capitol hill today, where they apologize for the taylor swift tickets fiasco back in november. the demand for her new concert tour was so intense that ticketmaster site crashed during the pre sale event. the ceo of live nation, which merged with ticketmaster and controls the majority of ticket sales in the us, testified before the senate judiciary committee. he said they were overrun with bots despite a billion dollar investment to fight them. we knew bots would attack that on sale and planned accordingly. francis. tonight after they were reunited with their stolen dogs. eight dogs were recovered this evening following that theft. we're told the dogs were in their dog walkers van, which was stolen at islands to raise money for pediatric cancer research. 15 year old maya marriage last week became the youngest person to swim. channel 28 mile journey from molokai island to oahu. she completed the swim in 27 hours and 33 minutes and earlier today on the four marriage explained what kept her going during that grueling swim. continue to motivate myself by remembering why i was doing it and that moon bay, killing seven people. the victims worked at two mushroom farms. their names still have not been released. investigators believe this is a case of workplace violence, as the suspect is being
