Here in the bay area a vehicle fire sparked a grass fire in pleasanton later today. It was reported before 4 00 just this afternoon on highway 84 on east ruby hills drive. Sky fox was overhead as helicopters dropped water and flame retardant on the fire. Fire crews say the flames burned 44 acres before they were able to contain them. No injuries reported. In Palo Alto Police are asking for help as they investigate four small fires last night that all appear to be suspicious. All near the downtown cal trans station and within a few hours of each other. Authorities say the suspect is 77years old, has a previous Sexual Battery conviction and was a registered sex offender. Hes been charged with kidnapping, Sexual Battery, and adult abuse. A rabid bat has prompted a warning. Health Officials Say dont touch bat because they are the number one carriers of rabies. Reporter the person who found the bat didnt catch it, he kept people away, scraped it into a box and took it to the lindsey Wildlife Hospital. Heres the bat on arrival at the clinic after someone spotted it on a path near the downtown splash zone at this park. A bat crawling on the ground in the middle of the day. They look very threatening when theyre showing you their teeth but really theyre just scared. This bat was not only scared but sick it declined and died in about a week. Turned out it had rabies. Bats are the most likely animal to become rabid. Weve had three bats test positive. The other two rabid bats this year were in a yards and in a home also in east county. People dont often see bats when they do there could be some curiosity. Its fortunate the latest bat wasnt near the parks play structure and children. This breed dubbed the big brown bat is the most common in california roosting in tree, barns and under roofs. Its nocturnal rarely seen in daylight. Seeing a bat could be pretty neat and they may want to come up and touch it. But we do want to remind people that bats could be rabid if bitten by a rabid bat you could develop rabies. Now that i have kids im really always worried about them touching things theyre not supposed. Those who come to the park often appreciate p warning but wonder why here. Its an odd spot because i didnt know we had any bats around here. The bat came into the lindsey Wildlife Hospital during its busiest time of year, overwhelmed with birds right now. But the judged denied the request that he be released on his own cognizance. One of two men charged with Involuntary Manslaughter in the Oakland Ghostship warehouse fire that killed 32 people. Cameras were not allowed in court as harris attorneys asked the judge to release him without having to post bail at all. But the judge reduced his bail from over 1000000 to just over 175,000. I disagree respectfully with the judges decision. Im not sure exactly how he arrived at the 750,000 mark. Its obviously a serious thing that 30 people died. But that in my opinion is not the factor that the judge should have been considering. The da calculated his original ban by accounting for all of the victims that died in the original fire. The defense said the fire should be considered a single event. The da says harris helped create a fire trap at the warehouse. According to his attorneys hes an artist who in fact tried to put out the fire and saved lives. Hes incarcerated with rapists, with people who have hunted people down and killed people, people who have robbed banks. Those are the conditions they have him in.
