Reporter well frank and heather, this statue has been here since 1958 when the school was founded. Its been vandalized before, but never to this extent. I wanted to show you the bullet that hit this statue made out of stone. Eight rounds were fired, one bullet even striking the school. The statue of st. Felicitas sits outside the school baring its name in san leandro. The christian statue now a target of hate. Its very upsetting somebody would come and do such a thing and hurt this statue. My mom heard the gunshots, then we heard the police say get on the ground, get on the ground. Reporter around 2 00 in the afternoon saturday in Broad Daylight Police say a neighbor reported gunfire at st. Felicitas church. There they discovered the suspect had fired eight rounds into the statue. If you take a closer look one bullet hit the flag pole and into the school itself. None of the houses behind the school were hit. And this is surprising. Really surprising. In 22 years i have encountered a lot of things, ive seen a lot, but this is a first. Reporter Police Spotted a suspect a 32yearold man who lives in the area refusing police order. A wrestling match then ensued between him and five officers. Police ultimately recovering a handgun on him. Its unclear his affiliation if any with the church. Theres some evidence that suggests this isnt a crime. Theres no inflammatory words left on the premises, derogatory words left on the premises. Reporter police would not reveal what evidence they found. Church goers are thankful if happened on a saturday not sunday when masses are all day. And attending mass today they left fathomed as a beloved statue was left damaged. Its not what i expected at all. This is our church, one of my children went to school here. Not what i expected. Its awful to see that. We cant even hang out in a Church Parking lot or to have Something Like this happen. And parishioners tell me the statue has been hit by vandals before their nose and sword were broken off damaged. But again never to this extent with gunfire. Police are not releasing the suspects identity until charges are filed. They tell me the gun that was recovered was not registered and the suspect has a prior criminal history with vandalism charges. Back to you. Azenith, can they repair the statue or are they going to have to replace it . Reporter well they are going to determine the next steps tomorrow. Theyre meeting with staff. I asked that question. Theyre going to look into it and they also say after Service Today they prayed for the suspect and also they prayed for the whole community. For them to come together during this time. A driver of a red convertible was heading north when he lost control near the lane. It happened at 12 30 this afternoon. Paramedics tried to revive the driver, but unfortunately they were unsuccessful. No other vehicles were involved. For an unknown reason he crossed into the outbound lanes of route 121 off the shoulder into some trees and down the embankment. The highway was closed in that area for an investigation. Until 3 45 this afternoon no word yet on the mans name or just why he drove off the highway. Also new at 10 00 tonight police in san jose now investigating a body found in a water at elgin lake. It happened in south san jose. It happened when the person was in the water and they took over the investigation. In Sonoma County hail is make an apparent view. And it is not completely unheard of, but as you might know. Of course we have the Lightning Strikes and thunderstorms here in the bay area, so yeah it is hard to believe, but summer is just a little over a week away on tuesday june 20. We are still talking about hail and thunder and snow and probably the first thing you noticed today. In fact everybody, the winds really ramped up first thing this morning as you can see them gusting over 50 miles an hour towards mt. Diablo. Fairfield 44 and some more observations are around 35 to 37 miles an hour across portions of the bay area. And a very active radar pattern with the rain showers and the thunderstorms setting up. In fact you probably noticed if the north bay between about 4 00 to 5 00 this afternoon a big cluster of thunderstorms are going to pepper in the maps here moving from the north to the south and then for the most part dissipated across the portion of the region. In fact we have clear to partly cloudy skies across portions of the bay area. Still a chance for a sprinkle late tonight into tomorrow morning. But first take a look at some of these storm reports. Of course these are the hail reports checking in portions of the north bay. So if i click on these as you cantic be out about 4 00 it will be 68. Yuba city had a funnel cloud spotted earlier this evening. Of course you heard about the sierra with all the rain and the snowfall and still the Winter Weather advisory is in place until 5 00 a. M. On monday. Things have been dissipating with the possibility for more scattered snow showers in the sierra into the short term. Its hard to believe the weather pattern. Were talking about a return of major heat here in the bay area. Its actually 90s back in the forecast. We will break it all down for you coming up. They wanted baron to finish the school year. Testimony by james comey will continue on capitol hill this week with an appearance by attorney general jeff sessions. And sessions had recused himself from the investigation, but was then involved in comeys dismissal. As well as any release on tapes. Several people here say they were also at saturdays counterprotests through the antisharia law protest who were spreading hate against all muslims. I think theres something happening here and because of whats happening for the National Level with the Trump Administration targeting so many different communities including the lbgtq community. And i think people will be coming out with the sign of defiance and to show unity. Now that we have these young people willing to come out and not only that but for the whole family, generations. Tomorrow marks the 50th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that overturned bans on interracial marriages in 16 states. The High Court Decisions to lift those bans began with a virginia couple. They married in washington, d. C. Where interracial marriages were legal. Their case made it all the way to the Supreme Court in 1967. It ruled unanimously on june 12 that bans on interracial marriages violated the 14th amendment. It is a beacon shining for be over 100 years. Its a pretty place indeed with a lot of unique opportunities to pay a spectacular lighthouse visit there. Claudine wong reports if you are lucky you may get a spot on a very popular tour at night. Reporter the lighthouse sits on top of a cliff overlooking the San Francisco bay. And the light glows. One second on and one second off as they have done in the late 1800s. Thousands have come to visit. On a saturday in the summer well have 12,000 people here. Monday will be a little less, but a lot of people have heard about it one way or another or they have seen it crossing the bridge, whats that so they come over here. Reporter we came as the sun was setting on a tour where only a few dozen people get to see it each month. We will walk down with a little talk on the way down. Its a tour thats always booked. Its an amazing sight to watch the sunset to the west ask and then you look to the east here comes the moon. Reporter the moon had not yet come as we started half a mile hike to the white house. From where we stood we couldnt even see it, but it would be a mistake to not enjoy the journey. This was initially built in 1865 and moved to its first location in 1872. Reporter pieces of that world remain. If you notice the train tracks and the remanence of a pier. Reporter the San Francisco bay claimed many ships and lives, which led to funding built too high. And that light was shining. Reporter they tell the stories of sailors and rescues as you could still look down at whats left of the old western station. The tracks would be used to lower those rescue boats down where you knew you were going out, but youre not sure what will be coming back. It was a little brisk today. Reporter the wind made for a brisk watch. The view is spectacular. And we work with the aquarium as they monitor the wildlife. Weve had more whales this year than ever, maybely humpback. Reporter there is no one out here anymore. The keepers have long since left. And over to your left youll see a house. Thats where the coast guard lived. It is just automated. Reporter even the hillsides tell stories. The lighthouse keepers had crops. They had cabbage, tomatoes mixed in with some poison oak. Reporter half way through our walk we couldnt see the lighthouse. We wont unless they get me through this crowded door. There is a tunnel, but it used to be a walkway. Like Everything Else the ocean took the walkway out. Reporter its off at night unless youre with the rangers. We will go through the tunnel, but watch your head. Well this tunnel was handed over by the lakers in the early 1900s. Some people get a little nervous. They will see the tunnel and they will turn around and walk back, they wont go through it, they do get a little scared. Reporter but if you brave those fears the reward is on the other side. This is the first spot to see it. Reporter we emerge as days begin to fade and night crept towards us. That light called us closer. Yet the journey wasnt done. Two more bridges over ground thats stripping away stood before us. Reporter and history has been redone. The story of erosions like so many things. Reporter and a warning, the suspension bridge that finally gets you to the lighthouse moves. So as you cross the bridge if you look at it here is the model of the golden gate. More people would tend to move. We fought the winds here better than 50 miles an hour. Reporter sometimes at high winds they shut that bridge down, but thats not the only thing that might make you pause. We always tell you not to look down, right . Look straight ahead. Look down, you dont know me. Okay, its not so bad here. Look for the cushions at the zoo. And you can see the sand and the dirt coming on here. Reporter then just like that you are standing in the shadow of the lighthouse with the water all around you and the light growing brighter. Our tour ended inside that lighthouse where we were reminded this was about more than just a light. Its about what that light meant to the ships who came in times of peace and in war. The head winds always bring so much history. A lot of people will go there just to seat golden gate. But theres so much to see on the hiking trails as well. It was windy there today and windy everywhere in june 11. We are talking about the thunderstorms here in Northern California and the sierra snow. They have a Winter Weather add risely in place until 5 00 a. M. Tomorrow, but this will be the developing weather headlines with the hot temperatures and a warming forecast. Tomorrow not too much of a change, but you can see the temperatures gradually going up each day. Then on friday the hottest location around the 93 and 94 degree mark.
