Yeah, frank, sometime overnight vandals climbed a 25 foot tank like this one cutting a couple of locks. They left graffiti behind but no one is certain thats all dont do nothing with your water right now. Dont drink it. Dont touch it. Thats why i came down here. This Water District yard in South San Francisco was busy with activity as people arriving home learned their water could be tainted and came to get bottled water offered for free. This is the first time in 52 years never seen this happen. Vandalism. Thats what i heard. Does that surprise you . Nothing surprises me these days. I think there should have been a lot more security up there at the tanks after 9 11. Theyre vulnerable up there by themselves. There should have been cameras or lighting. The vandalism was found this morning. 8foot tall letters, f and m painted on the smaller of two tanks with a 250,000 gallon capacity. To do it the taggers had to cut several locks and climb on to the top where a hatch into the water lies under a screen. It appeared one of the locks had been cut there. We dont think the tank was breeched. Its a heavy screening device. It would take four big men to move it. We dont think it was moved. Initial tests show no contamination but more sophisticated results wont come become for more than a day. The water was dm ped. A dumped. A small sacrifice for safety managers say. And customers agree with the abundance of caution. I have two little cats. They dont know any better. It wasnt just a precaution for ourselves but the pets as well. We dont know whats in there. Free water distribution resumes at 8 00 in the morning and will continue until those test rultss confirm results confirm there is no hazard. Customers who buy water on their own should save receipts and be reimbursed. This graffiti is gangrelated. Theyve seen the tags before and the agency says this is a very rare occurrence. Frank and alyana, it serves about 00,000 kus 100,000 customers. Hopefully they catch the guys or girls that climbed up there. Thank you so much. Aura interior from benjamin moo®e. Only available at independently owned paint and hardware stores. A legend among surfers, jack oneill, the man credited with inventing the wet suit passed away this morning according to his family in santa cruz. Oneill is credited with expanding the world of surfing from a warm water sport to cold water beaches throughout the world. Jana katsuyama talked with surfers in San Francisco today who knew oneill and are carrying on his legacy. Jack oneill has left his mark. Not just in the world of surfing but in the hearts and memories of those who knew him and shared his love for the sport. Jack oneill a man who spent a lifetime chasing waves started a revolution in 1952 from a small surf shop in the San Francisco garage near the corner of the great highway and wawona street. The shop here in San Francisco is a hole in the wall. Bob wise remembers the tight knit community surfing the waves before wet suits. You were frozen. You warmed back up and then you did it over again. You didnt learn to surf very fast. He says oneill used new materials to make the first wet suits in the 1950s. Johnny and hunter heard stories from their fathers who surfed and knew oneill in the early days. He used to get wet suits from jack oneill. They were custom made. He said 1962. A long sleeve beaver tail wet suit. A wet suit top sealed through the bottom was 36. Oneills invention took off. He built a company that has become a worldwide name and a symbol of surfing. It was instrumental in making surfing from an niche sport for hawaiins and hawaiians and others. He sponsored the cold water classic tournament. Jason was his neighbor in santa cruz. We grew up watching jack oneill on his bike and his patch. And putting on the old rubber suits. A lot of us wouldnt be out here without the suits. It changed the entire access to the sport. To water sports. In a film, great highway, oneill appeared wearing the patch that covered an injury from a surfing accident. A man whose passion for the water brought in new waves for surfers and created an entire industry and boosted business for shops. My fondest memory is at 20 years old when i started selling his wet suits. He says youll make good money selling the wet suits. He says youll never make money making surfboards. One mans life work that rippled through waters around the world. Hes a legend. You know . Hes one of the forefathers. People should be stoked about the life that he lived and how he lived it. Oneills family said he died of natural causes. He was 94 years old. And bill, as a long time San Francisco surfer, you knew him. What an amazing man. You interviewed bob at ocean beach. Hes the mayor and youre talking to a guy who knew jack really well and kind of followed in his footsteps because bob has a surf shop. What an icon for kellys cove, ocean beach. Were you a surfer . No i never did. Jack oneill and all those guys were fixtures at kelly cove back in the day. Theres a history on the highway that you dont know about. You got a taste today. Theyre saying it was a close knit community. That came through today. As soon as they said jack died i said bob, talked to bob. Everybody knew even other. There werent that many guys especially before wet suits. Before the wet suit they would wear pendleton shirts. Thats where the beach boys got that. The wool shirts. They would get insulation from that. This guy really changed. It changed a lot. Youd get on the beach and theyd light tires on fire before the epa was involved and youd get warm and run back out in the pendleton shirt and surf as long as you could. Really . Yeah. Jack was a pilot in at the end of world war ii he was familiar with some of these designs. Thats when he got to the knee preen which change noeprene neoprene which changed everything. Truthfully theres a whole history out there on the great highway in San Francisco, very interesting people from artists to back in the old days in San Francisco, thats where the artists hung out in carville. It was in the sand dunes. They took the old cable cars back in the 1920s and people would live in the cable cars. They were artists. You would leave the city, take your horse, go down to the avenues.
