Conservative speakers. Good evening im frank somerville. Im julie haener. More from our interview with ann coulter in just a moment. But first the lawsuit filed today. Ktvus Paul Chambers is on the campus with reaction from students and the university administration. Paul . Reporter frank, julie, many students we talk to do not agree with ann coulters speech, but believe she should have the right to share her belief with the university. The calm before the storm at uc berkeley campus. Right now its business as usual for students. However in a few days when ann coulter comes it gives a speech on cals campus. Some fear this peacefulness will disappear. It was january 1, tens of thousands of dollars in damages was done for the campus as the peaceful protest against Milo Yiannopoulos turned violent. Not so legitimate in this country. Reporter thats why the Young Americas Foundation at Berkeley College republicans filed a lawsuit against the university saying School Officials violated their rights to free speech when they moved the date the controversial speaker is scheduled to talk. I think berkeley misstepped in disinviting her to speak. The more we restrict people from speaking on this campus the more dentary mental it will be in the long detrimental it will be in the long run. They later reversed they later reversed that decision to a different date. Declare a speaker a high profile speaker and then determine it is permissible to restrict the time, manner, and place where that speaker is allowed to speak. Reporter the university released this statement about the lawsuit. The allegation contained in the complaint is untrue. Uc berkeley has been working on a mutual agreeable time for ms coulters visit and remains committed in doing so. The campus seeks to be sure all members at berkeley including ms coulter herself remains safe. They do fear a protest could turn violent again. Still they say the universitys practice what they preach when it comes to free speech. Because having Milo Yiannopoulos would be very dangerous. But because of the free speech movement, home, and the atmosphere we like to promote it wouldnt be fair to bar her from coming. Reporter now we do know ann coulter is scheduled to speak in three days here on campus. Where exactly . Thats a good question. We do not know that. Im sure well find out in the days ahead. Julie . All right, paul, thank you. This afternoon i spoke to ann coulter. She was in los angeles. We talked for about 15 minutes and discussed her intention to speak at cal on thursday. And why she doesnt think the University Acted in good faith. One thing, you dont want to give me publicity, then dont shut down my speech. Point two the actual facts of how this case has progressed. I mean as berkeley was loading up these kids with requirements from my speech it has to be in the day time, only students can come. We wont tell you where it will be. Okay, whatever requirements they put on my speech, i said okay. And then the next thing i know, one morning last week i woke up and they have gone ahead to cancel it any way. So i think we know why they were loading up my speech with those requirements. They were trying to force us to cancel, but we didnt. They are the ones, berkeley administrators leaked the cancellation on my speech to the San Francisco chronicle. And so at this point yeah, i responded. I was invited to give a speech, i have a contract to give a speech, im giving a speech. We saw what happened when Milo Yiannopoulos came to cal. There was violence, they were throwing paint on people, and they ended up canceling the speech because they were concerned about about safety. Chances are there will be protests, there could be violence, your thoughts on that . Im not even milo. Im a New York Times best selling author. I have given hundreds of college speeches. Its not that difficult, a proposition to pull off. To arrange a room for a 90 minute speech. Its not like im asking to do it from outer space or beneath the sea. I would guess the administration is well on notice this can happen and the Berkeley Police are well on notice, so i assume they will take appropriate action. Ann, i wanted to read you something Bernie Sanders said today. Ann coulter is outrageous to my mind, off the right, but people have the right to give their two cents worth to give a speech without fear of vie violence without intimidation. Other than my ideas being outrageous, i agree with every sill every syllables of that. If there is any place just in the abstract, colleges areplaces where there is suppose to be free dialogue. Even more than that in this particular moment in time. Oh my gosh do colleges need to hear the other side. On our Youtube Channel youll find more of the interview. We could stay with ann coulter. Look for ktvu fox 2 on youtube. The Highway Patrol said two caltrans workers were shot to death in humboldt county this morning in what authorities believe was a murdersuicide.
