Outside San Jose City hall a group braved the rain spending the Easter Holiday fasting for a cause. We have water right here, but we also have electrolyte water. Reporter Jocelyn Hernandez hasnt own since good has eaten since good friday. They have not seen the crisis. Reporter holding up signs fasting for a cause, pushing for renters rights. The biggest issue, no cause addiction policy allowing landlords to evict tenants without reason. They joined the Hunger Strike on saturday. Now 20 people are fasting. Theres people that go hungry in the city every day ask and then they become homeless. Our city council had an opportunity to change that. I think if they want to fast that is a great message of drawing the attention to it and a good way for them to send out their message. But in terms of the use of the word eviction it is overbroad. Reporter he says it gives renters the right of first refusal. And he is concerned with property rights. I agree there is a power between landlords and tenants, but the addiction would shift it in a different direction. Reporter city staff is proposing an approach where renters could officially file a complaint with the city to be protected against eviction. Advocates arent giving up without a fight. And people are being displaced. Families are being traumatized when they get evicted from their homes for no reason. The working class folks here, they built the city. And i just dont think it will be fair for them to just brew it on because of greed and people that dont even live here. Reporter the advocates plan to be here all day tomorrow here at city hall with the vigil planned for tomorrow night at 6 00. As for that vote on tuesday, we are told that there is not enough City Council Members to support just cause addiction, so the vote could go either way. Of course, we will keep you posted. He was under my watch. We have an update on that story of a mans ashes stolen from the trunk of a car in San Francisco. Those ashes have been returned. Here is a picture of the scattering tube sent to us tonight by Joe Wilkinsons widow mary. They traveled from North Carolina to scatter the ashes last wednesday. But while her rental car was parked at a fishermens wharf garage beforehand, a thief took a suitcase, wallet, and that silver tube. Wilkerson Police Called her yesterday saying the man anonymously returned the ashes. She plans to take the ashes back to North Carolina. Police have a person of interest in the theft, but have not releasedty but have not released details. A car clipped a utility pole this morning near santa rosa and slid down a steep embankment. The Highway Patrol closed calastogo road while pg e cleared the wires. A tow truck was called to remove the car. No word on the driver or what caused the accident. They plan to identify suspects using images from social media as well as their own surveillance footage. 20 people were arrested yesterday. Some are facing charges that include assault with a Deadly WeaponDeadly Weapon. Metal pipes, baseball bats, wood, poles, bricks, rocks. Several people were injured, one person was stabbed. Police say all those injured were a part of the demonstration. They said two of those arrested were associated with the march 4 confrontation. Police in vallejo say someone opened fire today on a group of teenagers who were leaving a Birthday Party. Eight were wounded and hospitalized. Now here is where the shooting went down. Reporter Vallejo Police were called to the house at 110 calhoun street near benson avenue shortly after mid night. Once on scene their found eight teens wounded and others injured. Real quick pop, pop, pop, pop, pop. Me as a kid from utah, colorado, those were gunshots. They were not fire crackers. I heard people screaming. The next thing i know my whole neighborhood was littered with emergency vehicles. Reporter the victims were all under the the age of 18. Residents of the house told ktvu fox 2 news the kids were from local schools and came to celebrate a Birthday Party for a 14yearold girl. A grandmother kim and another relative named chris declined to go on camera, but wanted to share what happened. At 12 00 the party was over. It was over. Why would they do that to those kids . I dont know why. They were teenagers. They were waiting for their rides home. Some of the kids live in the neighborhood and so they were walking home. And the car just slowed down, that was it. That was the end. Because you heard shots were fired and all the kids would start running. Some ran back into the house. Reporter according to police in vallejo. Two suspects wearing ski masks were waiting in the car for the party to end and then they began shooting from the vehicle. The grandmother is now searching for answers. To me, i thought it was premeditated. I dont know. My granddaughter dont associate with people that do stuff like that. Thats not how she was raised. Thats now how a lot of kids here were raised. We have checked several locations where he has been s where we got information about him. So far there are no more victims we know that are tied to steve. To be clear at this point theres only one victim confirmed. The elderly gentleman who was shot and killed earlier today. We just heard from the victims family a short time ago. Take a listen. He is 61, weighs 240 pounds, wearing a striped polo shirt in the videos with a beard. Last seen driving a white feared fusion with temporary tags. New at 10 00 a young woman died today after she fell from a thirdfloor balcony in berkeley. Police were called to an Apartment Building in the 2700 block of dwight way around noon today. Witnesses told officers the woman had fallen from the third floor, but officers are still investigating the circumstances of her death. The Alameda County coroner identified the woman as 21year old kimberly say of elk grove. Its unclear if the woman is a student. Two miniature horses were injured so badly they had to be put down. It happened saturday morning in the community of penngrove. The driver smashed through a small corral hitting the animals, and apparently kept on going. Haw knee that caril Juanita Carillo owns the two horses, but did not want to go on camera. She describes what she did when she found the injured pets. I tried to get them to the vet and they euthanized big red who was laying on the ground with a broken leg. And then the vet turned his attention to my other horse who i thought was going to be okay. He was holding his leg up. I thought he was still okay, but it turns out he had a broken leg. So he had to put him down as well. Wow. Police located and arrested the driver and she is hoping he is brought to justice. Fire officials are blaming a worn extension cord for an rv fire that killed a man in San Mateo County today. Smoke was coming from a garage. But when firefighters arrived they discovered the rv was on fire. They broke in through the the drivers door and found a 57 yearold man in the back in cardiac arrest. They cut a hole in the side of the rv and got him out quickly, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital. The extension cord was running through the drivers door and was severely pinched and worn from constant use and they say it was likely the cause of the fire. An avalanche closed highway 50 tonight near echo summit. The Highway Patrol said it happened at 11 30 this morning near frog pond. Chp said the avalanche was five to six feet deep and about 30 feet wide. Officials say the road was cleared and reopened in about an hour. Easter weekend meant a trip to the sierra for many bay area skiers. Conditions were beautiful saturday at the mountain resort. Skiers and snowboarders were getting some of their last runs in because several resorts closed for the weekend for the season rather this weekend. And after next weekend, several other resorts will be closed as well, even though there is plenty of snow left. They hope they could keep their runs in action through july 4th. Conditions permitting. And so much snow up in the sierra over the past few months. Still pretty high right around 6,500 to 700 feet with a lot of rain reports. Of course we have some rain here in the bay area as well. Theres a new antidepressant, but its thousands of years old. Yoga has been shown to alleviate major depression and its research is coming from uc San Francisco. Other studies have shown Mental Health benefits, but this is the first outside india that examined yoga as a solo standalone therapy. Ktvus Debora Villalon has more on what it means for people who are struggling with depression. Reporter amanda veal takes us through a few poses she learns while in a critical study of yoga and depression. Then she would have us do breathing exercises to really get it out. Be sure to try this one with me. Reporter she had dazzled before. But for the research she went twice a week for 90 minutes each session. At the beginning of the study i was really struggling with centering myself and that is how depression is. You get sunk into a feeling or a moment or sort of a drudgery. It is the very first study in the u. S. , look at yoga as the treatment. Reporter lead researcher studied men and women age 18 72. Here at osher center for intergraytive medicine. She learned about yoga in medicine. 50 of the people in the yoga group got remission, which means minimal to zero symptoms. That is a dramatic decrease. And the control group only got 10 remission. Reporter and no one was on medication or in therapy and so the effect was solely yoga. None of this comes as a surprise for those who practice. Really it is transformative and a lot of it is about being quiet and having dedicated quiet space. Reporter the owner of this studio, the second oldest in the city says people come in with physical ailments. But it is the mental benefits that will hook them. Many yoga stretches open up the chest for breathing known as mood lifting. When we are depressed they have the posturing of what we think of where someone is like this and opening up the opposite way, breathing, getting some space in. Reporter and by definition yoga is about calming the mind. We dont feel like were good enough or we question our choices and we get stuck or lost in our minds. So this is about quieting that down. Reporter uc study group was small and just 38 people. More research was certain to follow. But from their general public standpoint, you know, if they enjoy yoga and they are finding it will give them benefits, they will keep doing it. Reporter i can do this anywhere. This is a nice cobra at any point in my life. And so thats the tools i would learn and took with me. Reporter for this 31year Old High School arts teacher, the study was the turning point where she now feels self empowered, managing her depression. I would say to myself like i love you, amanda. One of her favorite poses, the one her class always ended with. Leaving yourself with soothing stories a mother would give to a child, but youre giving it to youre and it is really sweet, you know . Really healing. Reporter that is Debora Villalon reporting. New at 10 00, menlo parfirefighters used the jaws of life to rescue a woman from a burning vehicle. The woman rammed into a tree at 4 30 this morning. A man in his 20s was trapped inside. Firefighters doused the fire quickly, but said the driver suffered severe burns to his legs along with several leg fractures. They had to cut through the roof of the passenger compartment and then peeled the dash board back to free the pinned victim. He is being treated at stanford hospital. A United Airlines flight that took off from sfo this morning returned to make the emergency landing. An airport spokeswoman said flight 1721 was on its way to kona airport. The aircraft landed safely at 10 30 about an hour after its scheduled departure time. Passengers were transferred to another aircraft and left San Francisco about 1 30 this afternoon. Milpitas police said a man wanted in connection of the theft of a valuable autographed football has turned himself in. Van lam and another man stole a football autographed by hall of famer jerry rice from a Charity Auction earlier this month. Police said lam surrendered yesterday at Police Headquarters and brought the football with him. Police are still searching for a second man they said was lams accomplice. Police are also looking for three other people they are calling persons of interest. The football was valued at 3,500. A stockton Police Officer today opened fire and wounded a man they say was trying to flea from officers. Eric rutger reports. It was unbelievable, it was like a movie, but it happened so fast. Reporter just after 1 00 this afternoon, Stockton Police responded to a 911 call about a Domestic Violence fight. A Law Enforcement presence, the suspect apparently wanted nothing to do with, using this white suv as an attempted Getaway Police said. At this point he struck the Police Officers vehicle. He saw the suspect wasnt actually in his vehicle when the cops showed up. He got into his vehicle and shut the door. Reporter police say they opened fire. Stockton pd wont say how many shots were fired, but it was multiple. Probably about five or six. Yeah. The suspect was taken to the hospital after being shot. The victim was also hospitalized for treatment after the altercation. Both are expected to survive. Police identified the suspect as 26yearold Edgar Montoya who is hospitalized. The Charleston International airport unveiled an exhibit today that pays tribute to the nine victims of the Charleston Church shooting. Two stain glassed panes are the focal point of the exhibit. Theres also a bible on display. Its been two years since dylann roof opened fire at mother emanuel ame church. Exhibit organizers say the tribute is meant for reflection and to show how the community pulled together. We are a gateway to the charleston region. We want them to remember what happened here as well as to be inspired about what this community showed in terms of unity. Roof was sentenced to death in federal court. He plead guilty in state court to he plead guilty in state court. He awaits execution in federal prison. Today marks ten years since that campus shooting changed Virginia Tech forever. Over 10,000 people attended a Memorial Service today to remember the 32 people who died in what was the deadliest mass shooting in American History at the time. Lauren taylor has more. Aaron nicole peterson. Reporter bun by one the name of each victims were read. A gunman shot and killed 32 people. On sunday morning a candle was lit at the april 16 memorial on the field campus. It is the universitys way of saying we will never forget. For leah barron . It is really important for us to be here and the community and to bring our family and just be back to the place that feels like home. This campus was her home on april 16, 2007. Just about to graduate when the shooting occurred. It was thrilling. There are people, you know, that are a part of our family. And then you wonder why it wasnt you. Why you werent in class that day or why it was a tuesday, which has been a completely different situation. And actually that night i left a lot of people dead, a lot of people who went home to be with their families and spent the next couple of weeks there. Reporter and this weekend she has come back to this very campus that still feels like home. She and Virginia Tech freshman have come to the april 16 memorial to pay their respects. I mean, i wasnt here for the shooting. But being over there, it took so long and everything and it was emotional. Reporter it is their way of saying we will never forget. Thats where i come back. I come back for that feeling because it is an addicted feeling and you know this is your home and your community and they are just your people. When you find your people you dont need them. Today was the last day at the Cherry Blossom festival in San Francisco. It featured food booths, cultural performances, live band, and other entertainment. This is the 50th anniversary year for the festival hosted bit Japanese Community in japantown to celebrate japanese american culture. Here is Something Different in switzerland. Hundreds of people got up this morning to dress like charlie chapland. Here they are 662 people dressed up as the comic actor. Apparently it is the world record for the largest number of people dressed like the tramp ever in one place. It happened at the museum and marks their 100 128th birthday. They wanted to honor his universal values and his classy style of dress. Very cool. A team of engineering students are showing off the huge version of a child size toy. Something else that is very cool here at 1,500 pounds. They say this is the largest cube of its kind and it took three years to create and some of the original students, they graduated before the project was even finished. I really wanted to have something that i could leave behind. Something that says i was here and i did something and this project sort of became that for me. The students called the oversized cube a piece of interactive mechanical art. They estimated it would take a skilled player more than an hour to complete because of their size. And for the rest of us a lot longer than that. No fatigue for the fast and furious movie series. The eighth installment is on track to become the biggest debut of all time. It would top star wars the force awakens and jurassic world. Universal pictures estimated this morning the fate of the furious would earn a record 532 million worldwide.
