Reporter 5 g micrograms per deciliter is the threshold according to the cdc. Nationwide, 2. 5 of children have elevated levels of lead. In flint, michigan, its 5 . In fruitvale, its 7. 5. I was surprised a little bit in terms of the comparison with flint. Obviously that has been getting a lot of attention. I think it reinforced for us that this is an area that really needs attention and resources. Reporter i asked the Healthy HomesDepartment Show us the process of lead remediation. Their lead project designer, doug henderson, walked us through the first that first that. Reporter using this machine, they are able to test all layers of paint. Believe it or not, most homes built before 1978 are presumed to have lead paint. 9. 9. Reporter sometimes the sources not obvious. This column has a little bit of deterioration. That could be a lead hazard. Reporter its like a domino effect. That paint can fall into the dirt or worse, the soil could already be contaminated. That will be one subsample. Reporter often, led lies in the dust, settles on the windowsills. The idea is to go back and forth in one direction. We want to pick up all the dust in that square foot area. Reporter once the results come back, its the counties job to get the landlord or Property Owner to cooperate. We have an 85 success ratio in working with the owners. We have a cooperative compliance model that allows us to work with the Property Owners in a collaborative way, to make sure their homes are fixed. Reporter with the help of grants from hod, Alameda County can offer the property only owner up to 10,000 to remedy the issue. There are discussions now underway with oakland as far as exploring the possibility of some type of universal test requirement for high risk communities. County leaders fear other children are slipping through the cracks. There are other families that are more wellto do that are renovating older homes. Reporter doit yourself projects have become more projectaa popular. With it comes risks of lead exposure. When you are standing or removing walls or door fixtures, you can create lead dust. That can become an issue that stays in the home. Reporter like the soil, kids play in it. They crawl or walk around. They even in jest it. Sometimes lead exposure is so high it requires a trip to the er. Sometimes children have to be hospitalized to get the lead out for immediate relief. Reporter there are no symptoms to look for, just lasting developmental affects only noticed in schoolage kids. All the more reason why taking proactive steps is key to saving our children. Right now, the county is working with oakland to develop a proactive rental inspection program. In the meantime, their goal is to complete 100 units of lead safe housing specifically for children under six. If you would like to test jerome, experts say avoid chemical kits at Home Improvement stores. They say contact the county if you qualify for the repair program. You can also hire a consultant.
