Reporter the purpose of this meeting was to talk about neighbors concerns and neighbors tell me they are stunned, deputies arrested a teenager but whats more shocking, the suspect lived around the corner, two blocks away from the victim who remains in Critical Condition tonight. About 100 neighbors living in the foothills of san jose began their meeting in prayer for their beloved Community Member who deputies say was viciously attacked inside her own. Im really upset about whats been happening. Im really upset about a woman who was attacked. Im concerned about our safety in the neighborhood. Reporter deputies announcing they arrested this man 19yearold zachary cuen. He broke into her house, robbed her of her jewelry, ransacked her home and stole her car. Teenager a neighbor noticed the car monday. Then found her bleeding inside the home. Family members say she lived there since 1964. It was my grandmother. It could be yours or your mother. If you have any additional information, please call. Reporter documents revealed zachary cuen was on probation. He was arrested for stealing a car and for hit and run. A Law Enforcement source tells ktvu in the spring of 2015 when he was a juvenile he was arrested for attempted house burglary where the victim in that case also an elderly female documents revealed he lives on bartow lane. This map shows he lives within walking distance. Less than half a mile from where miss flo was attacked. Nobody answered when we knocked at the house. His neighbors tell us they saw his home under surveillance. Really friendly family. You never really expect danger to be so close to home. Its rough. I thought it was somebody in the neighborhood. Who else would know more about a persons life a persons lifestyle . Reporter its unclear if he had and a compass. With living so close neighbors say its even more reason to look out for one another. If we see something we dont feel, looks right in our neighborhood, we should question it. Better safe than sorry. Reporter ironically today is the 90th birthday. He is spending it behind bars. His arraignment is set for monday and hes being held without bail. As for miss flo, she is in grave condition and there will be a community vigil, prayer vigil tomorrow night at 7 00 at her house. Are are the authorities saying what led them to the suspect . Reporter yes. They say actual physical evidence from the crime scene led them there. Also statements from witnesses and neighbors and not to mention a surveillance video. Surveillance from the neighborhood from both the victim, miss flo and the suspect. Azenith smith in south bay, thank you. Now to oakland and guilty verdict in the murder of a well known dog walker. Prosecutor said 66yearold judy salamon had been taking cell phone video of two men who were committing a crime in her neighborhood in july of 2013. She then followed them in her car but they spotted her and fatally shot her. 25yearold stephan lee and 24 yearold mario floyd were found guilty of murder with a special circumstance of robbery. It was clear that mrs. Solomon was focused on protecting the community. And in this particular case protecting the community is why these two men basically took her life. Because whatever they were doing and i dont know, is in their minds was worth murdering her. Authorities say lee fired the shots. Both men face life in prison without possibility of parole. Set to be sentenced this fall. 16 people displaced by a house fire tonight in east oakland. Firefighters say the home on 105th avenue caught fire 6 30. Crews had the one our alarm fire under control but the damage was already done. A photographer says there were four units and the entire place was got it. No details on how the fire started. A case of animal cruelty is under investigation in Contra Costa County after someone shot a dog. Animal Services Says unfortunately one of the dogs legs had to be amputated afterward. Ktvus Christina Rendon tells us the German Shepherd was found in concord but at this point they are not sure who the dog belongs to. Good boy. Reporter bullet is adjusting well to life on three legs. The 2yearold German Shepherd earned the name after getting shot in his right hind leg. The way this traveled in this case is strange. Reporter contra costa the they knew they had to amputate quickly. Xrays show that his tibia and fibula were shattered like a glass. You can see little fragments of bone in the muscles. Reporter xrays also show bright colored pieces of metal believed to be bullet fragments. Craig all with animal Services Says they dont know who shot the dog. A Good Samaritan took bullet to Veterinary Centers on september 4th after reportedly seeing it injured on monument boulevard. The dog had no collar and no microchip. We would want to speak to somebody who can offer information. About the dog. And how it got in this situation. Reporter there waiting on test results to come back but they know the bullet hit the dogs leg from behind. The animal was not facing whoever shot him. Ive never seen a case where a bullet traveled into the lower part of the leg and up towards the muscles. Reporter bullet is now 5. 7 pounds lighter than he was before but still friendly and happy considering his new lifestyle. The dog cant help himself. He cant tell how this injury happened. For us its important to speak for that animal and if you know something, you are obligated to let us know. Bullet is recovering nicely. Robert blackburn was with his mentor superintendent Marcus Foster when they were ambushed and shot by two members of the Liberation Army in november of 1973. Ktvus Claudine Wong sat down with ellen township to hear her compelling story and learn what shes doing now to try to save lives. Reporter her story starts as president obamas first term was just getting underway. She was under secretary of state and a critical arms agreement with russia called the start treaty was set to expire. They normally take 12 to 14 months. President obama was getting sworn in on january 20. The treaty was expiring on december 5. We had to scramble. It was six hours time difference to moscow and about a seven hour difference to washington. So my day was about 20 hours a day. But it was tense at times. So i would be eating dinner at about 11 00 at night. And i started to feel as if i had a hard time meeting. I was eating mushy babyfood. And i thought, this is stupid. I have to go to the doctor. Reporter you knew something was wrong . I was calling it a speed bump. I thought theres something there. Reporter her doctor wasnt worried. She was a picture of health but he listened. He said, you are so healthy and you never complain. But im going to listen to what youre saying. So he didnt do what he was meant to do. He was meant to give me prilosec. For 12 weeks. Thank god he didnt. Reporter instead he did an endoscopy sending a camera down her each esophagus to see what was going on. I said if i say anything about nuclear weapons, dont repeat it at a cocktail party. And he left. When i woke up, i had a burning in my chest. I had blood in my mouth and i thought, blood in my mouth . I wonder if he did a biopsy. And he said, you have a very, very big tumor in your esophagus. Reporter she had stage three cancer but there was good news. The cancer had not spread. My grandmother died of it. Reporter tao sure remembers two very tough conversations. She cried a little and i said i know what numbers are shocking. But im just going to have to beat this. Reporter the other the day before chemo started was with Hillary Clinton. She was devastated and i was trying to say to her, dont worry. She said, i know how tough you are and i said its not about that. Its about i understand what i have to do. I have to outlive my cancer. And i had eight rounds of chemo, 25 rounds of radiation. Here i was the under secretary of state. Chief advisor on weapons of mass destruction. And im using chemical and radiological weapons to kill my cancer. Reporter she stayed on as undersecretary and when she was too weak to go out, people came to her. Sometimes they were so shocked when they saw me. But after that, we just got down to business and it was nice to have a distraction. My chemo was for eight hours a day. I could sit there and actually would be smiling because i would think, drink up, buddy. Youre going away. This is not going to kill me. Its going to kill you. Reporter it did kill her tumor. The day the treaty was ratified was the same day she walked out of the hospital. Life would never be the same. Doctors had to remove her esophagus and build her a new one. I can eat like everybody else. I just have a much smaller stomach so its like a three ounce ball. I cant lay down flat. So i have to sleep sitting up. So im pretty much at about a 45degree angle. Reporter six years later she is cancer free. But remains focused on those who will walk down the same road. I sit on the board of the National Conference of Cancer Network which are the 28 big cancer hospitals in the country. Including ucsf. I chair the board. Reporter tauscher says the problem doesnt seem to be getting better. In fact its getting worse. It has a 400 increase in detection over the last seven years. Thats a lot of people that are finding themselves with Esophageal Cancer. Most people unfortunately dont find Esophageal Cancer until it is stage four. Which means it has metastasized and moved around the body. Reporter symptoms of reflux and heartburn too often get masked with overthecounter antacids. So patients need to push their own doctors to look deeper if they feel like something is wrong. Even if it costs more to look. We also need on the other side the Insurance Companies and the system of getting through the gates and the guards spending money on prevention is a lot less expensive than what it costs at the end. To deal with somebody that has stay forward stage for Esophageal Cancer is pretty devastating. Who needs to do more . Patient, doctor, industry . Everybody. It requires any contractor convicted of work related crime to report that information to the state. Reporter yeah, julie. Only a handful of surfers were facing out toward the shark when it surfaced. They were only 30 yards away. The shark launched out of the water. Straight up mouth in the air. Full white belly. White pectoral fins. Reporter nick was surfing ocean beach. Like most mornings before work. The waves were gentle. And then about as close to him as that tree a seven to eight foot shark torpedoed out of the water. 40 years of surfing their, he has never seen one before. I traveled pretty quick in. Not everybody did. People stayed out. Diehard surfers were not sure what they saw. Id say a group of six or seven of us came in. Very impressive to see 1000 pound animal or more clearing the water like that. Reporter shark researcher dave uber says some species breach more than others. Often no telling why. It can be hunting behavior. Boaters recently saw a great white blast up from below and hit a seal devouring it before their eyes. That fire burned about 175 acres along the American River and forced partial evacuation of the fairgrounds. 1000 people attending a conference and rv show were told to leave. Firefighters had the fire contained by 5 00. Theres going to be a new protocol for investigating officer involved shootings in san francisco. He stepped down after a campus investigation substantiated allegations made by his executive assistant. Chowdhury is south asian and says white faculty members found to have committed misconduct have been treated more leniently. She claims to have sex with at least 30 officers from Law Enforcement agencies across the bay area in some cases when she was a minor. Today her attorney suggested the Richmond Police department may have wanted her in florida as part of a misguided attempt to obstruct justice. She didnt voluntarily go to florida. Rather she was told that she needed to go to florida because she had dabbled in drugs and this would be like a vacation. And she needed to go urgently. Richmond police and the d. A. s office helps secure the funds to send her to florida but would not say why she was sent out of state. She is expected to testify in the prosecution of at least seven officers in Alameda County caught up in the scandal. Late today prosecutors in Contra Costa County acknowledged they too are investigating the allegations of officers having sexual contact with jasmine. That announcement comes a week after the da and Alameda County made reference to additional cases. We are prosecuting two individuals for running her in the Computer System who we believe the evidence shows they had sexual in person contact with her. In Contra Costa County. Today the head of the poa told us the Union Supports an independent investigation but the state Attorney Generals Office is a better choice than George Gascon. Since George Gascon took over as District Attorney he has had a poisonous relationship with the Police Department and my members of the poa. He has proven that time and again.
