Hundreds of homes have been completely destroyed in lake county alone. Hundreds more up and down the state. Firefighters say one reason so many homes are lost is that many neighborhoods back up to whats called a wildland urban interface. These neighborhoods are kind of at risk due to several factors. Reporter older construction can also mean the difference between a home that is lost and a home that is saved. We may be up here, having a fire up here and there is a house with a shake roof down not even close to the fire and they could land on that roof and start a fire. Reporter what you plant around your house could make a big difference when it comes to a fire burning nearby. For instance some plants are highly flammable. There are several different types. Juniper is one of them, some type of bamboo are also considered great. The reason why theyre categorized as that they have oil and residence in the leaves that even though they are green year round and they really dont require much maintenance, theyre pretty easy to have and that is why people planted them i think in the past. But theyre highly flammable. They call them little green gas cans. Changing your landscaping to drought tolerant plants because those are also fire resistant. Pam cook ktv fox fox 2 news.
