Theyve had four people overdosed on counterfeit prescription drugs in recent weeks. People are buying them on the street, thinking theyre getting hydrocodone, or norco, and they in fact have fentanyl. So they are getting a much, much stronger pain medicine. Narcotic medicine. Reporter dr. David goldstein says fentanyl is a synthetic opiate used in anesthesia or to treat severe pain, considered 100 times stronger than heroin. With 30 minutes of taking these pills, people become unresponsive. And in worstcase scenario they actually stop breathing. Reporter so far fentanyl pills have been linked to 14 deaths in the sacramento area and at least seven overdoses in the bay area. According to a cdc report, a man and his girlfriend were recently treated at the Contra Costa Regional Medical Center after overdosing on fentanyl laced pills. The report said the couple bought the drugs from a friend thinking they were norco pills.
