As soon as we became aware of these Text Messages, four officers were immediately suspended. San franciscos police check says he feels betrayed. Good evening. Im julie haener. And im ken wayne. Four officers are accused of exchanging bigoted Text Messages at a time when the department is trying to repair a broken relationship with the africanamerican community. We get the new development from ktvus amber lee live at Police Headquarters in the city with more on this emerging scandal. Amber . Reporter cann, pa George Gascon tells me the latest scandal calls into question hundreds if not thousands of criminal cases. In the meantime police chief greg suhr says he acted swiftly suspending all the officers involved immediately. The police chief says a criminal investigation of officer jason lai for unrelated accusations led to the latest revelations that at least three other officers exchanged Text Messages with racial and homophobic slurs. Its disgusting. As it was when i found out about them. Reporter this comes on the heels of another text message scandal a year ago involving 14 other officers. The District Attorneys Office says in this current case the officers used the nword and used a derogatory term when referring to lesbian officers on the force. D. A. George gascon says the officers referred to the previous scandal in their text. You can tell they are almost mocking whats going on. Reporter the d. A. Is now contacting Defense Attorneys because the officers behavior could impact criminal cases in which they played a role. We dont know how many cases are going to be impacted, whether they are former or current case. So its a real mess. Officers dont believe they will ever be found out. If you dont believe you will be found out, what else could they be doing . Reporter curry Theresa Sparks is former commission president. A lot has to do with culture. We need to change the culture of the department to being more of a protector or a guardian. Reporter 36yearold jamaal says hes been targeted by police because he is African American and is used to the bias that comes with racial profiling. Done to us so much to where it becomes normal. Lynwood burruss peyton is accused of embezzling more than 200,000 from the diablo valley youth Football Conference. Tonight, he is in jail. There were several incidents where there were direct transfers from the youth Football Conferences Checking Account into mr. Paytons personal account. During 2010, to 2014, peyton served as treasurer for the conference using the leagues debit card and falsifying records to cover his tracks. Police say during that time he spent more than 22,000 at grocery stores, more than 21,000 at Home Furnishing and improvement stores, 20,000 from what was then the infinium raceway in sonoma, 10 grand for personal insurance and four grand on cable bills and three grand on flights. He was using so much of this money that he was causing Overdraft Fees on the youth Football ConferenceChecking Account. Those Overdraft Fees over a fiveyear period totaled over 4000. Reporter it was massive covering 18 east bay cities across three counties. Police say peyton lied about how much money was needed for the leagues insurance costs when the real amount was much lower. Investigators arrested him in the parking lot at a san ramon apartment, where he had recently been evicted. These were membership fees paid by the parents so they could participate in these leaks. A three person team from the National Institute of corrections launched an investigation into the Santa Clara County jail. Jail has been rocked with scandals starting with the beating death of Michael Tyree last year. Three former deputies are charged with his murder. There was also a person brought this month caught on surveillance cameras that the sheriff herself purchased just a day before. Critics content deputies should have sensed tensions and segregated the inmates before that fight began. Today sheriff laurie smith said she is not stepping down from her post despite calls to do so. I know that we know whats right, were going to get people out of the business that dont belong wearing a badge. The sheriff is pushing for sweeping changes in the department, she wants greater scrutiny of an applicants background and increase in educational requirements and screening for bullying tendencies. Smith says she believes she should stay in office to make sure the changes happen even if it means another term in office. Campbell police say theyve arrested two men on suspicion of stealing highend bicycles. Its a story we told you about last week. Police identified the man as 37 yearold brian smith of san jose and 27yearold stephen fox, a transient. Smith was identified based on tips from the public. This is the Surveillance Video of two men entering a locked storage area at the revere apartment comp lex last month. Campbell Police Released the video last week. The thieves stole four bicycles. They are still trying to locate those. At least one of the bikes was worth about 3000. The town of moraga has asked for state disaster aid in fixing damage from a single ear town officials sent a letter to Governor Brown requesting assistance to pay for the estimated 3. 5 million in repairs. That sinkhole damaged storm drains, a sidewalk, curb, pedestrian, ramp and cover. Its far beyond what the town can afford. The District Attorney says the land action activist took over an elderly womans house between october through this past january. The charges include felony conspiracy to commit a crime, filing false paperwork and misdemeanor trespassing. Before when i would look through it, it will be run down. Reporter neighbors say last fall they noticed a young man and woman making changes to a house next door on barbara road. They broke that down, started renovating everything. Then a few weeks later, little do we know, the police can. Reporter this neighbor didnt want his face on camera. He says thats when they learned the People Living next door were not new owners bus quarters. He was in there for a good month before anybody really noticed anything. Reporter now the District Attorneys Office has filed criminal charges against four people, with the activist group land action. The complaint states that patrick shoup, and aisha hide illegally occupied the house owned by an elderly woman, hazel webb who bought it in 1970 and has kept it for sentimental reasons even though she no longer lives there. Stephen dicaprio filed an affidavit saying his group land action had taken possession of the property through the adverse possession law. Saying it was vacant and the group would pay taxes. Just a month earlier in September Dicaprio had showed 2 investigates how he used adverse position to take ownership of the house. He found he founded land action to teach other people how to do the same. This is a movement of people struggling using mutual aid to address their own needs for survival. Reporter prosecutors say the homeowner had been paying a gardener to maintain her property on barbara broke and the owner ordered land action to leave when she discovered him living in her house. Ware also paid part of her over to over to tax bill and on the statement are the words, help, lord jesus, come quick. Persecutors also say the assessor on december 24 sent a letter stating, land action does not legally own any part of this property. The activist tells ktvu they had agreed to leave the property once the owner came forward and now are being unfairly targeted by the d. A. Times reports 54yearold Lawrence Wells junior of richmond was acquitted of a more serious felony charge stemming from an incident aboard a flight from l. A. To San Francisco. Passengers waited on the plane for more than two hours before it took off. Once in the air, prosecutors said wells tried to choke a woman sitting in front of him after she reclined her seat. In livermore family says it fell victim to scam artists who target unsuspecting usedcar buyers.
