Is a band from the 1980s. The real con artist is senator marco rubio. I dont think the people of america are interested in a bunch of bickering schoolchildren, they are interested in solutions, not slogans. All of this after mitt romney blasted donald trump saying he is unfit to lead. The bullying, the greed, the showing off, the misogyny, the absurd thirdgrade theatrics. Harsh words, punctuate an internal fight for the identity of the Republican Party at a Pivotal Moment in history. Im frank somerville. Im julie haener. The gop searching for direction and a leader with the 2016 president ial election just nine months away. Jana katsuyama is here now with the Harsh Criticism the front runner faced at tonights debate. Reporter julie and frank, this debate started off cordial. John donald trump apologize that one point for name calling. But the attacks still came as the candidates discussed differences and personal ethics. Four candidates were on stage but from the start the front runner was under fire. Donald trump dismissed the blistering critique that trump is unfit. He was a failed candidate. He should have beaten president obama very easy. He failed miserably. And it was an embarrassment to everybody including the Republican Party. Reporter next on the kkk and david duke i totally disavow the ku klux klan. I totally disavow david duke. Reporter comes credibility was central to the debate. Donald trump has written checks to hillary clinton. Ive supported democrats and republicans. As a businessman, i owe that to my company, family, workers, to everybody to get a look. Reporter the moderator showed video clips of trump changing his policy positions. One of the things people love about you is they believe you tell it like it is. But time and time again, you have actually told the voters one thing only to reverse yourself. Ive never seen a successful person who wasnt flexible, who didnt have a certain degree of flexibility. You have to have a certain degree of flexibility. Theres a difference between flexibility and telling people whatever you need to say. Reporter marco rubio defended his increasingly personal attacks on trump. Anyone ever deserved to be attacked that way, its been donald trump. Trump came back with a surprising apology. I also happened to call him a lightweight. And i have said that. So i would like to take that back. Reporter rubio didnt let up saying a lawsuit against Trump University is an example of breaking promises. Hes trying to con people just like he conned these people into giving them their money. Reporter cruz also to criticized plans as short on specifics. Its easy to say lets cut waste, fraud, and abuse. Ive rolled out a detailed plan. Reporter as the candidates bickered, john kasich kept out of the fray. People say everywhere i go, you seem to be the adult on the stage. Reporter case kasich counted his experience but admitted his moderate candidacy can only waste can only win through an uncontested convention. Within the first hundred days, i will have a plan that will pass the congress because it was reasonable and i can bring both sides together. Reporter at the end of the debate, each of the four remaining candidates said they would support the eventual republican nominee whoever that might be. They also doubled down with each of them claiming that they would be the one. Very interesting night indeed. Thank you. Now to analysis of tonights debate and the aggressive jabs on stage, joining us live from petaluma is political analyst brian sobel. In our newsroom, james taylor, professor of politics at the university of San Francisco. Thank you for being here. Professor, what stood out for you about tonights debate . The way in which both rubio and cruz conspired together before the debate to pounce on donald trump. And to hit trump left and right. Seemed throughout the night trump was responding trying to counterpunch in terms of responding to the different charges. I thought cruz and rubio did an outstanding job of prosecuting donald trump personally and prosecuting donald trump in terms of his lack of policy provisions and all the contradictions in his personal life and his public life. Brian, trump was under enormous pressure tonight. There was the mitt romney thing, then cruz, rubio hitting him hard tonight. How do trump take that . I thought he did pretty darn well. When you think about it, he had a very long day, romney just tore him apart in his speech in utah. In the early part of the day. Trump had to respond in a conference in the bit part of the day. And show up for the debate tonight. And all things being equal, i thought he fended off cruz and rubio pretty well. Brian, whats happening to the Republican Party . This is crazy to me. You have them talking tonight about the size of their hands, what that means, youve got them calling each other names. Youve got mitt romney coming out and saying the person who is currently leading in the race in the Republican Party is unfit to be president. My 16yearold daughter is just getting interested in politics. Im not really sure what to tell her. This is just crazy. Frank, i would say shield her from this. This is a big mess. John kasich tonight, i thought, was so elegant if i may use that word. Stayed out of the fray. And as ive said before, might be the smartest guy on that stage who wont get nominated. Talked about the issues, his experience and among the other three, it was really ugly tonight. Just a followup to what you said, brian, john kasich did stay out of the fray. If he does go on to win ohio, is there any chance he could pick up steam later in this race . The only way he ends up being a player in all of this is if donald trump gets to the convention and there arent enough delegates for a nominee to be canonized. If that doesnt happen, then you may see a number of different scenarios. I thought it was interesting today, that you had romney, not endorsed anybody and he looks like he wants to stay in the fray. James, back to you for a second. Does it seem at all like donald trump is softening his approach a little bit . Not making the big outrageous statements that he was in the beginning . He seemed to be a bit bipolar in terms of swinging from outrageous statements and criticisms, refusing to renounce the kkk to renouncing the kkk to go on to these other winds or angles and asking for forgiveness for insulting rubio personally and breaking out the worst part of rubio in terms of his almost childish attacks on trumps personality and his physicality. So i think this is, like you say, a real mess for the Republican Party both nationally and the coattail effect that donald trump could have a negative way if they are not able to stop him. James, one more quick question for you. Donald trump being the front runner, this is an opportunity for cruz rubio to shine tonight. Does either one of them shine . I think they posted. Cruz shines the most because he was clear on emphasizing the contradictions across Donald Trumps fortyyear public life and bringing these things out that people have let go and again, donald trump has not been affected. We act as if he has but he has not. We know who he is but we dont know his policy position today. Theyve been all over the place. This is a good tactic that cruz and rubio have used. Let me say this lastly, donald trump disavowed the kkk, but he asked to haskins ask yourself, why is the kkk attaching themselves to him . Has the kkk renounced donald trump . Thats the problem he has to deal with. He will never overcome the stigma. Professor and brian, we appreciate as always both of you giving us your insights. To the debate tonight. Thank you. Thank you. Five states host a primary this weekend or caucus. The biggest is louisiana with 58 democratic delegates and 47 republican. Reporter this is what part passengers faced most mornings. Bart cars that look like sardine cans. I have asthma. Times when ive been on a hot car, so many people i can barely breathe. Reporter bark is in the process of devising a new plan aimed at enticing riders to escape the sardine cans by riding bart during offpeak hours. Its called bart perks, passengers can earn points for riding bart. If they moved to an offpeak time period to get more points. Reporter under the proposal, the rewards would range from credits on a passenger clipper card to using their points on games of chance and a shot at winning money. They got the idea from the Transit System in singapore which apparently has been successful. Bart says if it can get just 1200 or so passengers to switch that hours enough to fill a 10 car train, that would be enough to make a difference. We found at least one rider willing to try. Im an attorney. It would work as long as my supervisors are okay with it. The Transportation Authority is reaching out to employers located near downtown San Francisco bart stations and encouraging them to have their employees sign up and let them work in those offpeak hours. Passengers are skeptical. The hard part with bart is from where i come from, walnut creek is parking. If you dont get there by 8 00, you cant find parking. If you are going to flex hours, i dont know there would be enough people that wouldnt park and early enough you would still have parking. It would be great for everybody to be able to make choices of when they ride bart. Reporter bark says this will be a pilot program. They expect to roll it out this spring.
