Packed concert hall. At least 102 people are dead and that number could go higher. A number of the victims were at a concert listening to a heavy metal band. Gunmen held the crowd hostage shooting from the balcony killing at least 80 people in that hall. It was a massacrement the deadliest night in paris since world war ii. Unarmed people out and about for a night on the town mowed down by gunmen and suicide bombers. Jana katsuyama is here to begin our coverage. Reporter these were just people out on a friday night. Dining out at restaurants. Attending a concert. Watching a soccer game. You can see on the map we plotted the six spots where police say the attacks happened. The three nearby restaurants attacked as well. Gunfire in paris is being called a calculated and coordinated attack. The city of lights sent into its darkest hours. At the stade de france, loud explosions were heard during the soccer game between france and germany. There were two explosions. I thought they were agricultural bombs. Reporter two suicide bombers and one explosive kills people there. President Francois Hollande was there and was quickly whisked away. Fans poured onto the field afraid to leave. Everyone started to panic. The trains are packed. In are people everywhere. It is quite stressful and a big mess in paris. Reporter death spread five miles south as shooters opened fire driving by three restaurants killing at least 11 people. Gunmen stormed the Le Petit Cambodge theater. The eagles of death metal were supposed to be playing there. Witnesses say at least three gunmen in black opened fire on a balcony on concert goers. Some of them were dead. Some badly wounded. But it was a blood bath. Reporter some survivors told french media the attackers yelled this is for syria. One witness told french media the concert stopped. Everyone was lying on the ground and they continued to shoot. It was a nightmare. Paris police say attackers at the theater detonated explosive vests committing suicide as police arrived. 15 military troops were dispatched to paris. A curfew put in place. Frances president called a state of emergency and closed the borders. In the face of terror, we have to be united and we will vanquish these terrorists. Reporter in the soccer stadium, a show of unity as the crowds left singing the national anthem. [ singing ] reporter and tonight, we are getting word the Prosecutors Office in paris says eight extremists are dead. Seven of them died in suicide bombings and fox news reports that one person was captured who claimed to be with isis. Another report indicates that four or five Law Enforcement officials might have been killed in that raid. We are trying to get some information that has not yet surfaced. A lot of people think this is the work of isis, but there have been no claims of responsibility yet. I cant imagine what it must have been like inside the theater and this brings back so many memories of september 11 for us. Jana katsuyama, thank you. Well, the white house says president obama is keeping informed on the developments in paris. The pat denounced the attacks and offered americas help. Once again, we have seen an outrageous attempt to terrorize innocent civilians. This is an attack not just on paris. It is an attack not just on the people of france. But this an attack on all of humanity and the universal values we share. During our 6 00 news we spoke to a woman by phone who is from lafayette who was there for a conference. We asked her what it was like. It is very quiet. The businesses were shutting quickly. People were running down the streets. It was quite chaotic. When i arrived at my apartment building, there was a bar right next door and people had been let in to our building because it didnt have glass windows. There were probably close to 40 people just standing in the corridor of our building thinking that was a better sheltered area than the bar where there was a big glass window. In San Francisco, and around the bay area, there has been an outpouring of sympathy and support for the victims in paris and all the people of france. Reporter julie, there has been a steady stream of people out here all night saying prayers and of course leaving flowers, leaving messages and leaguing candles. They say they are standing strong but they want to remember the people who were killed and injured in paris. The deadly attack in paris can be felt all across the globe and here in the bay area. Because, i cant understand. Even like, 11 months ago with the charlie attack, i was not able to understand what was the goal of this action. And, so e what is the point . Following the attacks in paris, authorities in new york, chicago, San Francisco, and other cities stepped up security. San Francisco Police chief greg surr told us there is no known threat, but anyone who sees something suspicious should call 911. We went on heightened alert immediately. All officers were put out in uniform. High presence. Anywhere there was a concentration of people through the weekend. Certainly in all of our entertainment districts. At the coliseum in oakland, crews locked the gates and shut down oracle arena as a precaution. There are no events scheduled there tonight. Our cameras are locking the gates. Again, just as a precaution, we want to stress there is no known threat to the arena. California governor jerry brown reletsed a statement late this afternoon. It said all of california is saddened by todays wanton and brutal attack in paris. Our prayers are with the victims families and all of the people of france. And San Francisco showing its solidarity with the people of france. City hall is lit up in the colors of the french flag. And the french flag is also flying on the balcony. Paris is a sister city of San Francisco. Mayor ed lee issued a statement expressing sorrow for what he called the heartbreaking tragedy unfolding in paris. Peds hurt. Cars damaged. After a double decker tour bus lost control right in the heart of San Francisco. The bus went a couple of blocks before finally coming to a stop in union square. 20 people were injured and tonight, six of them are in Critical Condition fighting for their lives. Ktvu fox 2 news Debora Villalon is on the scene on post street where investigators are trying to figure out why the bus lost control. Debra . Reporter frank, witnesses say the bus which is still right here behind us was zooming wildly down post street for a few blocks. And even hit a bicyclist before crashing so hard right here. 30 people sightseeing in San Francisco one minute. A crash the next. The coach suddenly picked up speed and started weaving erratically. This is pretty horrific. It was gut wrenching. Reporter working in the plaza steps away, this man heard the heavy bus start slamming into cars. It was like a bomb going off. It was just going boom, boom, boom, boom. Like it wasnt going to stop. Reporter when it stopped, a half dozen people were trapped and needed rescue. Five people suffered life threatening injury us. On the bus, on the sidewalk. Or in cars that were crumbled. This awning to protect pedestrians became a trap when the bus plowed into it and pulled the metal scaffold down. It kind of threw everyone around on the bus. There is a lot of glass. And things flying everywhere. Reporter construction workers broke car windows to get to the victims and grabbed the ladder to get to the top deck of the bus which had been almost full of people. Very distraught. Very worried. A lot of fear in everyones eyes. There were a good amount of injuries. What we are looking at now is five critical patients. One was from a little further up the road. Reporter the erratic driving actually started a few blocks before where the bus driver hit and critically injured a bicyclist. The bus driver is hospitalized too. But no word if he had suffered some kind of medical episode. My understanding is he was conscious and talking. So, we will investigate what those circumstances are involved whether it was mechanical failure. Driver error. Reporter half the injuries were minor. People grateful they were spared by probably a few inches. I noticed them coming at me. And i ran out of the tunnel and jumped out of the way. Reporter this man was showered with glass and metal, but outran the bus in the nick of time. If i didnt get out of the way, i would have died. Reporter tonight, heavy equipment finished what the bus started. That damaged scaffolding was knocked down and hauled away. But the bus is still here and now that we have kind of a clean view of it, you can really see the force of that impact and how the front of that big twodecker bus is really caved in. Crews are working now to get the street back to normal to get the sidewalk back to normal. The muni lines back to normal. It is with a long accident investigation because there were so many moving parts. It is taking even longer to clean this up. But, they are hoping to have post street reopened by morning. Frank . Boy, the story of that guy who just barely jumped out of the way. So debra, is it just post street closed . What about the rest of union scare and the powell street cable car line . Reporter it is all still pretty snarled as far as getting around this central area in union square. If you dont have to come down here, certainly not tonight or the next few hours, you really shouldnt. Fortunately, the commute was over. Most of the traffic has gone home. So it is not congested. There are allotted of street closures. That construction is the new apple store. That is what was being built there. That is why they have the awning so people would be safe. That was the old levi store before they tore it down. All right, Debora Villalon, thank you. Now, to the peninsula where a bus in san bruno has been given the all clear after a bomb scare. The hazmat squad were called to el camino real. A passenger dropped something an it broke and it began to smoke and a gray substance started leaking out. About 40 passengers had to be taken off the bus. A nearby apartment complex was also evacuated. It was a harmless alcohol based liquid. Officials in kern county say a gas line exploded killing one person and injuring two others. It happened about 3 30 this afternoon in a field southwest of bakersfield. Pg e says the pipe was buried 12 feet underground and was cut by someone using heavy equipment. Utility didnt know what sort of work was being done. Caltrans is hours away from setting off underwater explosions to demolish a large concrete pier that supported the old eastern span of the bay bridge. Ktvu fox 2 news tom vacar with how it is going to happen. Reporter a few months before and after the implosion, bridge traffic will be halted at the toll bridge westbound and yerba buena island. They will halt tube service up to and following the blast. This is the closest any boater can get. There will be many official boats filled with police. Safety crews and engineers that will block most of the little view to the underwater event. This is an active demolition site. We want to encourage the public to steer clear. Stay away. We will have opportunities for you to see what there is to see on a live feed. Reporter the implosion of the five story concrete and steel pier could only occur in november. November was always the identified month when there is the least amount of wildlife in the area. Reporter a wall of compressed air bubbles will muffle and lessen the shock of the implosion of the own pier that held up the eastern span of the bay bridge. 600 strategically placed explosive charges, 25 to 35 pounds each will take just six seconds to bring the massive five story underwater structure down. Technologies have improved significantly. Reporter active deterrent devices will scare birds away from the blast zone. Passive noise devices will ward off sea mammals. If a mammal did come up, then, there could be a time frame in which to determine if that mammal is then out of the area or if it remains in the area and then, a decision would be made as to whether we would move to our second window of doesnt. A section of one of the busiest streets in San Francisco is closed tonight. A short stretch of van ness between post and geary was closed all day today and it is expected to be closed all day tomorrow and sunday. Workers are finishing work on a tunnel underneath van ness that will connect two medical buildings on opposite sides of the street. Contractors say they are on target to reopen van ness avenue in time for the morning commute. Tracking another cool fall night out there. The winds were blowing earlier tonight, but they got the flag hanging there. It will be a cool one tonight. Not as cold as last night. There is the moisture plume coming in over 2,000 miles of moisture streaming into the pacific northwest. Six inches to a foot of rain in parts of the pacific northwest. This system will impact us, but not until saturday night into sunday, we are not going to get a half foot of rain. We will be lucky if we get a half inch of rain. A coyote inside a bay area safeway. Cell phone video shows an animal control officer removing the coyote there in danville. It headed right for the Meat Department and clawed at a display case. Governor jerry brown today extended his executive order requiring californians to conserve water. The order allows Emergency Water conservation measures to continue through october of next year. Now to an idea never attempted before in california. The city of hayward is about to open a new Medical Clinic and it is located right next door to a fire station. Ktvu fox 2 news rob roth on the hopes it will reduce the number of nonemergency 911 calls. Those who live in south hayward have to travel for miles to the nearest health clinic. You could be sitting this all day and all night. Reporter but that is all changing. Hayward is about to open this. The brand new fire house clinic. It sits right next to a newly built fire station making it the first place in california to have a Medical Clinic next to a fire station. This is fantastic. That is what Health Administrators and the fire chief hope. They say it will reduce the number of 911 medical calls that are not really emergencies. The goal here with the fire house clinic is to provide primary care access to prevent the 911 call from happening. Reporter south hayward has among the highest rates of diabetes and Heart Disease in alameda county. Paramedics answering calls will be able to encourage some nonemergency patients to use the clinic rather than a more expensive hospital emergency room. We are out there everyday. We think they could do more. Preventing inappropriate use of the 911 system and promoting access to primary care. Reporter they are expected to receive some 10,000 patient visits in the next two years. In San Francisco, police held a town hall meeting this afternoon to discuss questions of wednesdays Deadly Police shooting near saint louis eke hospital. Amber . Reporter julie, the meeting was held inside saint lukes hospital. The police chief laid down a time line of events and acknowledged the man killed by police may not have fired his gun. It was wednesday at 4 15 in the afternoon. The first 911 call came in from a construction worker about a man with a shotgun and what was thought to be a handgun. A latin male wearing all white with a tattoo on his face. Reporter police have identified the man as 25year old Javier Ivan Lopez Garcia of san jose. Three minutes after the call, the first officers arrived and reported hearing gunshots as did other callers to 911. But this afternoon, greg surr acknowledged what they heard may not have been gunshots. An active construction site. Those sounds could have been anything since the call was that of an active shooter. Reporter and garcia may not have fire firstdegree shot he had. We dont know if he fired any shots. It does not appear that there were any spent casings from the shotgun found at the scene. Reporter and the other gun garcia had turns out to be an air soft pistol which fires pellets. Still, at the time, the chief says garcia was a threat. He was on the lift between the sixth and the seventh floor and he was armed. There were about 30 workers hiding nearby. Mr. Garcia had the barrel of the long gun in a shooting position moving from side to side. Officers believe the suspect to be targeting civilians and police. Reporter the officers feared for the lives of the construction workers, members of the public and their own lives and ordered him to drop the gun. Police say garcia did not comply. Three officers discharged their weapons from the ground floor. Up at mr. Garcia. Mr. Garcia was struck and fell where he stood on top of the man lift. Reporter there is Surveillance Video showing garcia robbing the big 5 store in san bruno where he got the shotgun and today, police displayed the threatening note he handed a worker demanding a shotgun. Now chief surr says it is unknown why garcia came here to this construction site. Julie . Amber, was there anyone at todays meeting reprinting garcia . Reporter there was, his mother was attending the meeting. She declined to answer any questions about her son. All right, amber, thank you. We now know the name of the man who was shot and killed by Sunnyvale Police yesterday. He has been identified as 42 yearold moises nerio. He charged at officers with a knife. They were called out to the palm villa apartments after a woman reported being sexually assaulted by her half brother. When police arrived, they said nario was standing by the door with a knife. The officers are on paid administrative leave. Oakland officials shared more details about the arrest of a man in the shooting with a ice cream vendor. Joevan lopez was arraigned for murder. The detectives worked with the fbi and the u. S. Marshall service to locate lopez. Authorities say they still havent determined a motive for last months killing but they did say it was not robbery. San francisco is trying out an 18 month experiment to try to ease Traffic Congestion a few blocks from union square. Powell street has been closed to vehicle traffic now between ellis and geary right here the end of the cable car line. Closing those blocks to traffic will reduce the chance of people being hit by cars. There have been 18 cases in the past five years where someone has been injured. Another benefit is to San Franciscos cable cars. The sluggish stop and go nature of what powell street was before we put these changes in that was creating significant wear and tear on the cables themselves. The street as you can see there has been painted red to indicate where cars are no longer allowed and new loading zones have been marked off to deliveries. Stocks slid lower today. The dow jones lost more than 200 points. The nasdaq was down 77. The s p 500 dropped 22. Fears of a poor Holiday Shopping season are partly to blame for the declines.
