She is live on the scene with Lessons Learned in trying to relocate some 270 elderly patients. Reporter i talked with family members of one patient who said there was some confusion and they didnt know where their relative was. Tonight, the lights at the nursing home are back on. But, earlier, for nearly eight hours, the power was out. Emergency vehicles were queued up. At one point friday afternoon it was a scramble just finding enough vehicles and evacuation sites getting everyone relocated. This is the largest nursing home in the county. 278 beds. Reporter fire Officials Say it was a small fire at the burlingame long term nursing home caused by an overloaded electric panel. But what put these patients on the sidewalk and caused the evacuation was a loss of power in a place where elderly patients depend on electrical devices. We had 270 patients here this morning. Approximately 70 patients had been relocated to a variety of different spots. Reporter we asked whether they had a backup generator. It had limited use of power because of the backup generator. We had an elevator to get people down from the second floor. We had limited lighting in the hallways. Reporter 2 30 p. M. , burlingame called for mutual aid. Agencies from as far away as yolo county responded. These are buses that have been retro fitted with specially designed equipment to have advance life support. Reporter basically, a giant ambulance. The bus formerly used but muni can employ 12 gurneys at once. The nursing facility ceo says everything was executed according to their emergency plan. Could you have been better prepared . Ingly dont think so. Reporter but they will review the incident for emergency preparedness. All the nursing homes, all the agencies and stuff. We need to prepare. That is what you need to identify. How do we locate almost 300 people to the perfect facility . It is a good lesson for us. Reporter the fire chief says that state and county officials are inspecting the building and also checking to see whether the building was in compliance with all codes. The patients who had bo to be taken to other facilities, what will happen with them . Reporter well, there are about 70 of those. We are told from the ceo that they will remain where they are tonight and make arrangements for them to be brought back here. Also he says all expenses around the relocation will be covered by this facility. Live in burlingame, thank you jana. Now to San Francisco where fire investigators are trying to figure out what started this afternoons three alarm fire in the Inner Richmond neighborhood. The fire damaged a threestory Apartment Building on Second Avenue and gary boulevard. People in the area say they heard two loud explosions and went outside to see what happened. The fire chief told us it started on the ground floor of the building and quickly moved up to the top floor. Two people inside got out safely and then went and knocked on their neighbors doors to warn them. Firefighters were charged. These were all attached buildings. Wood frame construction. There was a fire on the ground in the rear which quickly ventilated upwards. It is is a four unit building. Significant damage to that building. The chief said the fire crews did a good job getting the fire under control. However, all three floors sustained significant fire and water damage. At this point, the exact cause of the fire is under investigation. A San Francisco medical examiner has identified the man shot and killed by a Police Sergeant on market street. 27yearold Herbert Benitez died from an upper gunshot wound to the body after fighting with a Police Officer and grabbing his weapon. Police have tentatively scheduled a town hall meeting next monday to discuss the incident with members of the community. Now to Southern California and the latest on the massive mud slides. Tonight, i5 at the grapevine is reopened to traffic. Hundreds of people were stuck along the intestate overnight with essentially nowhere to go. Bean blames his excessive use on irrigation and pool leaks saying we are more than displeased and embarrassed by the usage and are taking immediate action. At 5 00 this afternoon, the height of the evening commute, uber drivers nationwide were asked to stand in solidarity by turning off their app service the entire weekend. I rely on uber all the time. I would be curious to see how people get around. I will feel it. If you want to get point a to point b you get to uber. Reporter some feel they are not making enough money. An Organization Called uber freedom listed this base of demand. Add a tip option. Raise the minimum fare and cancellation fee to 7. But some customers feel the protests will backfire. If i have to use one of their competitors it is easy. I see how it could drive up the demand for lyft or fly wheel or side car or Something Like that. Reporter she may be right. By our account, we saw more taxis, lyft on the road. With 20,000 drivers in the bay area, the work stoppage shouldnt have that big an effect on the users. By this map, you can see there are cars in the area, the surge pricing which is put into place when the demand is high kept changing. This video taken from uber freedoms Facebook Page shows a small protest at uber headquarters in San Francisco. They said we always welcome feed back from driver partners. The company must be doing something right. It has more than 320,000 drivers nationwide. More than double since the end of last year. And although the company and drivers are not on the same page when it comes to wages, uber users say they have no problem with one of their driver demands of tipping option. I guess uber drivers get tips too. Here is the tip it might help. But if someone wants to tip, they are going to tip. Reporter uber spokeswoman said the reason why there isnt a tipping option is because it is a hassle free experience for their users. Also, the uber drivers make a percentage of each fare. Thank you. The faculty and staff of the Cal State University system are about to take a strike vote. It will start monday for the 25,000 members of the california faculty association. It is the fourth time in eight years they have been authorized to call a strike over stalled pay negotiations. The union wants a 5 raise for all members and a 2 7 increase based or years of service. The university is offering 2 . The same increase all other csu employees received. The strike authorization vote is happening at all 23 cal state campuses. New at 10 00, a celebration in fremont as folks turned out to witness the opening of the citys first downtown neighborhood. Reporter it replaces the broken water main line caused by a massive sink hole that is now 50 feet long, 25 feet wide, and 10 feet deep. We have made great progress over the night. Our crews have been working 24 7 since the beginning of the incident. Reporter the Alameda CountyWater District says the reason it grew from when it was first reported wednesday, they had to make it big sore crews could safely get in the hole to make repairs. You can see how unstable the ground conditions are. Once the water line is fixed, the Union Sanitary district will install a sewage pipeline beneath it. It wont be open until late tuesday at the earliest. A cause is unknown. There are a number of theories but at this point, everybody, everybody meaning multiple agencies involved, are still investigation mode. Reporter among possible theories, the 44yearold water main line or sewer pipe leaked. The sink hole is near new haven street outside the Union City Fire station. While fire service hasnt been interrupted, it has inconvenienced this couple who drop off their children at a nearby school. It is causing a lot of traffic. You know. It was a long friday morning for some bay area commuters all thanks to two separate accidents involving big rigs. One involved a truck that caught fire shortly before 7 00 in vallejo. Witnesses sent us these photos of the burning truck. It was traveling westbound carrying a load of hay. The chped hit five other vehicles. All westbound lanes were closed. The Highway Patrolmannaged to open one lane around 2 20 this afternoon. The road was fully reopened at 6 20 this evening. Another fiery accident backed up the morning commute along the 680 corridor in the east bay. This one just before 6 00 this morning south of highway 24 and walnut creek. The Highway Patrol says the fire started when diesel from the big rig ignited. The gravel truck had slammed into the concrete divider separating north and southbound lanes. The impact sent concrete flying. Several cars were damaged. All northbound lanes of 680 were closed for hours. Several people suffered minor injuries. The days of rapid job growth may be behind us. 2900 jobs were added in september across the bay area. Compare that to gains of nearly 15,000 jobs in august. And Santa Clara County actually lost more than 4,000 jobs after five years of increases. One Business Analyst says a slow down had to happen eventually.
