There is the kind of heat that can be dangerous. We have Team Coverage for you tonight. Beginning with maureen naylor. Shes at one of the schools cutting the day short tomorrow because of the heat wave. Reporter the Campbell Union High School District which has schools in both campbell and san jose decided to call for emergency minimum days at its eight campuses including here at brenham because of limited airconditioning. The late summer heat is breaking records and making history for the Campbell Union High School District. This is unprecedented yes. Reporter the triple digit weather prompted the district wide clang. We became very concerned with the well being of our students and our staff after numerous complaints and concerns were voiced to us in the last several weeks because of the heat. And with the extreme heat we thought we shoulder we should error on the side of caution. Reporter this father with two teens at brenham and a younger child says its going to cause a lot of changes. Its going to cause a lot of confusion. Knowing who has to be picked up when. Well have airconditioning in all of our classrooms is a high priority for us but in the meantime we better be safe. Reporter further down in morgan hill the temperature reached 104. Ive lived here for 20 years. Hot would be 100 and up is what i would consider hot. Reporter the city has openedded cooling stations including at the community and culture center. These students tuesday night were placeed in an air conditioned room for a production of annie. Were worried about the kids, its hot and just worried about dehydration. Its just gross, hot. I am just worried about them. Reporter this bomb this woman who is nine months pregnant has one hope. I just hope it cools off, no more heat. Reporter the school that is will be shut this is a legitimate heat wave. We had numbers today in the 100 to 103degree range. The only record in the bay area proper was oakland at 95 degrees. Monterey check thats hot in monterey. 95degrees. Downtown salinas you got to 98 degrees today. How can it be so hot and how can we have so few records . It has a lot to do with this is the time of year we get the big numbers. This isnt that unusual to see temperatures 104, 105 degrees. National Weather Service tomorrow. Second day in a row a heat advisory for the entire bay area. The heat advisory comes up when youre thinking of cities like oakland, san jose and hayward, where they dont have air conditioning. The hot weather means increased fire danger in tuoluame county. Its burning about 5 miles east of the historic gold country town of columbia. Calfire says its burned 100 acres so far and destroyed one home and is only 20 contained. And in southern california, another wildfire there is devouring dry brush near fullerton and lahabra. It has scorched about 80 acres but its 70 contained. That fire started about 4 00 this afternoon and prompted fire investigations from homes. Those evacuation orders have been lifted. Passengers on a flight headed for london got the scare of their lives this afternoon at the las vegas airport. Check out this picture flames pouring out of one of the engines of a boeing 777. The crew aboarded their take off after what crews described of a catastrophic failure of the engine. People also took video of one of the terminals. You can see the black smoke billowing out of the jet in the distance. Airport officials reported two injuries now they say 14 people were actually taken to the hospital. Fortunately all of the injuries are considered minor, mostly cuts and scrapes from going down emergency chutes. Firefighters put out the flames in about five minutes. There were 150 people on board along with 13 crew members. The fire initially caught delays in the airport but everything is now back to normal. Now to eastern Contra Costa County and an unusual turn of events for three firefighters. They responded to a life or death call on foot when their fire engine broke down. Amber lee live in brentwood where she spoke with a member of that crew, amber. Reporter the firefighters work out of the station number 52 here in brentwood. Tonight we spoke to a firefighter that helped save a mans life. It was hot sunday morning around 11 00. Firefighter sam and others took off. They werent on the road for long until their fire engine broke down. While waiting for the tow truck, another call for help came in. Going to be behind the payless shoe store. Royal lane and jeffrey way. A male in cardiac arrest. Reporter he and the other two firefighters quickly determined that it was only a quarter mile away at a shoe store in a strip mall. We knew we could beat the other engine. And time is of the essence especially cardiac arrest. Reporter without hesitation, the crew grabbed 60 pounds of gear and jobbed to the scene. Minutes count, if we could get there before the other engine, we had to give it a try. We got weird looks, six guys in uniform running with gear on our back. Reporter there were other problems when they arrived. We just got news that he was in the back of the store. We didnt know if inside or outside the back of the store. Reporter a store clerk walked them to the man. They started cpr then a defibrilator machine. Theyre always ready to help somebody. Reporter an ordinary medical call that got an extraordinary response. The 29yearold says some day hell be telling this tale to his children. Its definitely a story thats going to stick in my mind. Its going to be one of those. Reporter the man was rushed to the hospital. The firefighter tells me the man is in icu. Heather. Well lets hope he makes a full recovery. Amber, obviously having an engine break down in the middle of a car isnt a good thing. But having it happen where it did i guess was a good thing because they were able to help that man out. What was the problem with the engine in the first place. It was a mechanical problem and its been repaired. And those problems are fairly uncommon. Yeah they happen to everyone. Amber, thank you. The tent tenants first held this rally. Members of the Mountain View Tenants Coalition want city leaders to apply new protection which could include rent stabilization and stronger relocation benefits. After the rally they took their concerns be ever the city council. If we cant keep them here reporter many tenants want a moratorium. Three Santa Clara County deputies accused in the beating death of an inmate were in court today to face murder charges. Thats a long with a surprise charge stemming from another alleged assault on an inmate that same evening. Ktvus rob roth now with the developments. Reporter three Santa Clara County Correctional Officers appeared in court for the first time. J era lubrin, Rafael Rodriguez and Matthew Harris were all charged with murdering inmate michael tyre. Those who were supposed to protect michael tyre did not. Instead they killed him and we have charged them with murder. The three officers stand accused of beating to death tyre on august 27th. He was found in his cell covered in his own waste. The defense attorney for farris says farris did not cause tyres death. Hes not doing well at all because hes in custody. Hes law enforcement. Hes used to become on the other side of the hes used to being on the other side of the bars. Reporter Authorities Say tyree suffered from mental illness. Many inmates say they heard tyree saying im sorry, im sorry, stop, stop. When one of the deputies returned an hour later he found tyree on the floor. He died from internal injuries. We have filed charges because they have all three responsible for the murder of michael tyree. The individual evidence will be presented in court. Reporter the documents indicate just before the inmate was beaten, another officer hit another inmate in the head. The three officers are in custody and are scheduled to see the court for bail. Heineken has announced they bought a 50 stake in the bay area brewer reu lagunitas. So it can expand in more global markets. The deal also gives heineken access to the growing craft beer market. And excitement is growing for the apple event in San Francisco. Its expected to take place in the civic center. September9, 2010 a fire ball towers over san brunos crest moore neighborhood. 28 homes destroyed, eight people lost their lives, a chaotic and unthinkable day that neighbor jack remembers well. Jacks house just across the street from the explosion. I was burned here and i was burned here. I have a blister here. Reporter jack and his daughter and wife fled the fire ball running out of their backyard. My wife was burned pretty bad. Third degree. She had a skin graft here, she has a skin graft here. Reporter his house was badly damaged but is now repaired yet the rebuilding in this neighborhood continues. Other homes are under construction and it may be another year before work is complete. If you have just vacant lots and youre building homes its not the same thing. But we have to rebuild storm drains, water lines, cable tv. All new street scapes are coming later. Ken pritchett, ktvu news. The ceo of United Airlines has resigned along with two other top executives. Jeff smizick had been under investigation by the airline and federal authorities. The corruption probe involved preferential treatment to the Port Authority of new york and new jersey david sampson. United kept operating a money losing rout to South Carolina that sampson used to fly to his vacation home. That rout was dropped the day after sampson resigned from the Port Authority. The airline had been in negotiations with the Port Authority over projects at newark airport. Smisek wont leave emptyhanded his severance is worth millions. Ktvus tom vacar reporter ben carson comes off as a mainstream conservative. The Republican Party is becoming more diverse and inclusive. He believes providing fair opportunity for all will solve a lot of our problems. Sending these photos back of all the children caught in limbo. We need allies like the United States, like the european unions. Government saying those people give them their rights. Authorities say a train hit someone just after 9 30 tonight. No word on their condition. There are major delays on the system. B. A. R. T. Is also providing a bus bridge for any passengers who are impacted by the closure. San francisco supervisor scott weiner today introduced new legislation to produce a subway master plan for the city. For 35 years we have not added an additional subway line. We will now add the central subway in a few years which is terrific. What i dont want to have happen is we finish the central subway and we all take a deep breath and just stop. Then its another 15 years before we move forward with anything else. Reporter the central subway project under construction right now will link the line. Weiners proposal goes a lot further. He wants the city to come up with an outline for long term subway expansion throughout the entire city. Kentuckys defiant county Clerk Kim Davis is out of jail tonight and back home with her family. A judge released her after she spent five days behind bars for refusing to issue marriage licenses to samesex couples. As doug mckealy reports, kim had to make a promise before the judge sent her free. Reporter kim davis was jailed on a contempt charge for refusing to issue marriage licenses to samesex couples. She plans to be back at work this week. But i can guarantee you knowing kim, she loves god, she loves people, she loves her work and she will not betray any of those three. Reporter the kentucky clerk had been locked up since last thursday. The judge lifted jail time as a condition of her release, davis has promised not to interfere with the issuing of marriage licenses for samesex couples. I told kim today that i feel shes shown more courage than most politician i know and most every pastor i know. Reporter davis spoke to supporters who had rallied in front of the Detention Center where she was being held. I just want to give god the glory. His people have rallied and you are a strong people. Pope francis today radically changed the process of obtaining a catholic marriage annulment overhauling 300 years of church teachings. Instead of costing thousands of dollars the process will now be free. Practicing catholics must have their marriage annulled if they want to remarry in the church or receive communion. I think that we celebrate new life in christ as we bury folks here. They asked me three types, where did the fruit come from. Reporter the archdiocese started planting grapes as landscaping in the perimeter including the Catholic Cemetery in hayward. We planted three vineyards just to see if it would take off and be fruitful. Reporter but there was a problem, what to do with all the grapes. He asked me if i would be interested in making sacramental wine. And as a wine maker, thats a once in a lifetime opportunity. So i said yes right away. Reporter and she was surprised that the grapes are better than she expected. Honestly, theyre killer. No pun intented. Reporter theyre brought here to this old plane hanger at the Naval Air Station where the wine making process begins. Rock wall wine company is now making hundreds of cases a year for the archdiocese under the label bishops vineyard. Everybody is very positive about it except for a couple of people that have this vision of maybe the vine coming out of a head stone or Something Like that. Reporter many are drawn to the wine not just because of the quality. They had a very emotional response to having grapes that were grown in the cemetery where their family was buried. Reporter the church is now seeing demand from people who want to move their final resting place. So now those plots cost more. We have people that want to be buried next to the vineyard. They want to have the opportunity to be here. Weve had people who want to have a wedding here. Reporter in the end its the catholic can charities that benefit the most. Plenty of water, fluids and check on the elderly and the young. Overnight lows will be forecast to be in the mid60s. Tomorrow they get 94 degrees again downtown. Starts off a little cooler. Ends up a little cooler than it was today. Still a hot day in San Francisco. Hence the heat advisory. How about san jose tomorrow 99 degrees for daytime highs. 99degrees in san jose is going to feel about 110 degrees. Right down the street level. 101 in sonoma. Look at all the 100s. Why is clear lake cooler than antioch . Because its hotter and the air sinks. The lower down you are the warmer youre going to get. So clearly its actually cooler, right. 5degrees cooler because its a couple of thousand feet higher. 101 in saratoga. Along the coast, mid80s. Fog will be back patchy in the morning. I suspect itll be back in earnest. Even though its hot and theres low humidities theres no wind. In september and october when those winds start clicking offshore like i showed you that flag.
