Learning how to code, getting careers in the tech industry. One thing though that is not as clear is how the Google Company and others in Silicon Valley plan to navigate this and tackle this controversy around gender in the workplace. Google ceo paused to hear the pitches. Girls explained apps they created to help solve problems in their communities. Ironic timing for google after one of its engineers posted a memo saying genetic differences explain why fewer numbers of women are in tech jobs and leadership roles. He was fired. The ceo told the group of girls thursday night google welcomes women. Theres a place for you at google. Dont let anyone tell you otherwise. You belong here and we need you. But his words of encouragement follow his cancellation of a google town Hall Thursday to discuss the memo and the gender controversy. In the letter to employees he explained the cancellation, saying googlers are writing in concerned about their safety and worried they might be outed publicly for asking a question in the town hall. The worker claimed google was hostile to conservative viewpoints and gives special treatment to female and minority candidates. Its definitely a defining moment for google. And for our culture. Its something that were working through. Google Vice President of education Maggie Johnson is an engineer and says the larger problem is widening the pipeline of girls who see a future for themselves in a traditionally male dominated field. For a company like google or any of our other High Tech Companies the number that we can actually hire because of the pipeline and all of those factors causing position. To the girls who dream of being an engineer or an entrepreneur and who dream of creating Amazing Things i want you to know that theres a place for you in this industry. Google and the nonprofit that helped sponsor this handed out tens of thousands of dollars in scholarship money to the young girls to pursue their dreams. As for google though they said that they are going to try and look at this issue in the coming days, have forums where some of the employees might feel more comfortable sharing their thoughts and asking questions. But certainly this is an issue continuing for google and other Silicon Valley companies. One when they need to meet head on and try and address how people perceive gender here in the workplace.
