Lake merritt and the telegraph corridor officers have followed hundreds of protesters and there have been arrests. After 00 in oakland, after 8 00 in oakland, a large group were surrounded at the cafe at telegraph and 29th. The business doors opened and dozens filed inside, leaving only the police and a few protesters outside. We have Live Team Coverage of the millions march protest here at ktvus Debora Villalon is in San Francisco, but let car with cara liu in oakland. Reporter we have seen quite a bit of activity this evening that just about wrapped up half an hour ago. Now take a look at this video from our helicopter, this was the scene earlier, around 8 00. Police surrounding protesters here at 29th and telegraph. It looked like a group of protesters rushed into the commonwealth cafe and public house. Police at intersection had it blocked off to about an hour and a half while all of this was going on. A number of people were arrested. Police have confirm that, but havent provided an exact number of people arrested here. Now the evenings protest started about 5 00 this evening, a group of several hundred protesters wound through oakland and opd declared Unlawful Assembly about 6 30 this evening. Earlier today about 3,000 turned out for the millions march in oakland. One of the latest demonstrations protesting the decisions of grand juries not to indict White Police Officers in the killings of unarmed black men in missouri and new york. It started near city hall and marched to the courthouse. A pokesperson for the Oakland PoliceDepartment Says this is the largest gathering since the wave of protest and predominantly a peaceful demonstration, people from all backgrounds taking part and organizers undercore underscoring the leadership for those pushing for change. Were the ones falling in the streets because of the police and were the ones who need the leave the way out of this trauma. The court system works better for those with money and better for those in power and works very good for those Police Officers and it works very horibly for those who are born with less money, inner city, low education. All lives are created equal. Black lives matter, brown lives matter, white lives matter. And we have have to Work Together to ensure that there equality for all. Reporter protesters seemed to make several attempts to get on to the freeway. At 27th and telegraph we saw the group march through that intersection the first time someone was burning something and the sec time we saw dozens of officers trying it maintain control and shutting down the intersections for several minutes. Were also hearing about some arrests happening at 17th and franklin this evening. We have tried to reach out to the Oakland Police department to get more details on those arrests as wells a total number of arrests here many oakland connected to the protests. Well pass on that information just as soon as we good it. Caru, i know you had your eyes on several protests and tonight seems a lot different. There was still a large crowd, but not as much or very little violence. Can you figure out what the difference is . Was it because there are more officers out there tonight . Reporter there was certainly the Largest Police presence and this is only the few days i have been on the ground covering protests, but we saw dozens upon dozens upon dozens of officers and my understanding there was a strong Police Presence at the other locations as well and as you say that may have very well been the difference tonight. Thank you, carra. We want to show you another view from the scene at 17th and francisco. You can see things appear to be windying down. There were Police Officers gather on motorcycles at 17th and franklin and a number of arrests were made a short time ago, in last halfhour, 20 minutes or so, but looks like things are clearing out and we may have a peaceful evening moving forward, but well be keeping an eye on things. It was a tale of two cities, San Franciscos day long march all, but disappeared after 8 00 after drawing thousands at its peak. Ktvus Debora Villalon is live at city hall, the site of a mid afternoon speech. The Civic Center Plaza was a sea of people of all ages, races and backgrounds calling for change. Tone the same as across the bay, but the tactic somewhat different. The million march San Francisco contingent let their voicings be heard in front of Mission Police station. It had already been a long day for protesters. And the police, who have kept pace with them. Saturday mites crowd thinning as it moved on. The tailend of a huge crowd, that set off from the Ferry Building earlier in the day. Hands up dent shoot their chant the samed as though echoed around the country. This banner mourning a man shot and killed this year in San Francisco. Reporter Market Streets with a mass of protests are, noisy, but peaceful. And after dark, on Market Street again, the same. I believe in this cause. Reporter this attorney attending a conference saw the march and joined in, spurofthemoment. A ridiculous system are unarmed people can be gunned down and no one held accountable. How is that justice in america . For hours motorcycle officers held traffic and suvs followed behind. But San Francisco has a big enough force to march along on either side. Keeping splinter groups to a minimum. How is that San Francisco managed to avoid the vandalism and violence of equivalent bay . That is something that we sit down and well conduct actuary reports and see what we have done well and what were doing different . And maybe sit down with our Partner Agencies and see what we can share with them. The. Reporter the protests melted away at 24th and mission. People need to get into it because the whole system is built on exploitation and oppression. Reporter we watched as more than a hundred officers most of them brought in on days off, boarded buses and finally off work for the night and i asked the deputy chief what all of this overtime is going to cost San Francisco and he says does he not have that number as of yet. Its worth noting ken, that Michael Browns father will be in San Francisco tomorrow, speaking at the First Baptiste Church at 4 00 and that is very likely to draw a big crowd of supporters. Talking about the overtime, i think Oakland Police say it cost 1. 3 million for them and it will be interesting to see what San Francisco has to say about their situation. Debora villalon in the city, thank you. More details now on marches today across the country. Were going to show you a protest in new york that shut down the brooklyn bridge. Thousand of protesters were all day long cawing for justice in the wake of decision not to prosecute White Police Officers in the death of unarm black men. Earlier the mother of choke hold victim eric garner rallied the crowd. This is just a great moment. This is a historymaking moment. And you know, we need to stand like this at alltimes. No justice no, peace. In washington, d. C. , the march traveled up pennsylvania avenue from the white house to the u. S. Capitol. Domors called on congress to take action and appoint special prosecutors to oversee cases about the use of force by police. Joining us now is civil reicherts Attorney John Burris who has been involved in many police abuse cases including the oscar grant shooting by a bart police officer. John, thank you for joining uses how effective do the think the protests arethey are effective in the sense that they are bringing people together and articulating their concerns in a national way. Rarely do you have an opportunity to see this kind of protests in hundreds of cities and with thousands and thousands people protesting. Basically saying that the criminal Justice System has essentially forsaken a sense of truthfulness and righteousness. I think its very, very important what they are doing and obviously no one wants to deal with violence, but to the extent that many people have participated and mostly of them have been nonviolent, i think its extraordinarily important. Of course you now have to take the issue of protesting to the next level and that is that you have to figure out what that you would like to accomplish and that is something that leaders of the protest march will have to work through. And what about that, about the violence . That seems to have detracted from the message, hasnt it . San Francisco Police chief last week said that the police would like to facilitate these peaceful protests, but there are is people who are imbedded themselves in the protesters causing these problems. Of course you always have a minority of groups that will try to undermine it by their own particular protest, but i dont think we should lose sight of the fact will are many, many more people that are participating who are not in fact, violent and who feel very, very strongly about this issue. This is a unique time in our history. We have this number of people, this crosssection of people, nationwide, planning in an issue that really has struck home. And videocameras are basically i think have been at the center of all of this. John burris, civil rights attorney in oakland. Thank you for joiningion us. We did try to contact Law Enforcement officials current or former Law Enforcement overtimes to participate in this, but we are unable to do so tonight. At uc Berkeley Campus police are investigating a disturbing find that appears to be linked to the ongoing protests. Ktvu has decided not to show the graphic images.
