Setting cars on fire. Police cleared the freeway but then it happened for a second time. It is a very busy news night. Good evening everyone im frank somerville. And im julie haener. We want to go back to the streets of oakland where you can see protesters have blocked traffic on interstate 580 once again. This is a live look at the situation right now on news chopper mm two. News chopper 2. Police are in the process of clearing traffic. Police have also closed westbound lanes of traffic as well. We have our crews, but first the news from ferguson. No indictment, that was the decision from ferguson. That decision sent people across the country into the streets. In ferguson, protesters vandalized and set cars on fire. Ktvus Heather Holmes with more on the decision. We begin with reporter Garrett Tenney who is live in ferguson with the very latest going on there. Garrett. Reporter yeah frank, police were hoping that we wouldnt see a repeat of those violent protests we saw back in august, tonight though its much much worse. We know of at least seven buildings now along west floresent avenue here in ferguson that are set on fire. Completely ablaze. Several are completely burned to the ground. Were just hearing reports that an officer has been shot as well. Gunfire has been ringing throughout the night. Weve heard well over 100 gunfire shots. The flames from the building you can see them up in the sky throughout the night as well. Protesters in addition to that gunfire, several molotov cocktails have been thrown. Batteries even. Stores all along the avenue there and throughout ferguson are being broken into and looted. This is ongoing. Police say so far at least from what it appears is that this is all happening so quickly and so rapidly that its just been hard for them to get their hands around and to get control of the fire crews as theyre trying to respond. Those buildings are still ablaze. More are going on fire as we speak. Police are slowly moving forward, but as they keep moving forward, these protesters keep going on to other businesses and its hard to keep up. Its midnight now. What is the Police Strategy here . It doesnt appear to be Getting Better. I dont know if its getting any worse but its very, very bad. Police are trying to get a handle of this situation here in ferguson. Really what were seeing is a lot of these protesters are going from store to store. Jumping in cars and going into another area and breaking doors and setting fires. Police are having a hard time responding. Michael browns family issued a statement saying theyre disappointed that officer wilson is not gone to face charges. The family plans to talk publicly tomorrow. As for the grand jury, they deliberated today. The panel is made up of seven men and five women. Only four votes were needed to block an inindictment. Nine of the jurors were white. Heather holmes is live with more on the long awaited decision. The prosecuting attorney knowledge only detailed the grand jurys decision. He repeatedly stressed that the lack of evidence. Reporter in an unusual nighttime News Conference in a missouri courtroom, the st. Louis prosecuting attorney announced the 12th person grand jury decided not to press charges against officer wilson for the august 9 shooting. The Scientific Evidence examined by the grand jury combined by the physical evidence. Supported and substantiated. No probable cause exists to indict wilson on any of the five possible charges they were asked to consider. Follow the announcement, a new wave of anger in st. Louis and throughout the country. And the brown family released a statement saying. While we understand that many others share our pain. We ask you channel your frustration in a way that will bring about change. We are a nation built on a rule of law. Reporter 20 minutes after the announcement president obama asked the nation to accept the decision. There are americans who agree with it and there are americans who are deeply disappointed, even angry. Its an understandable reaction. But i join michaels parents in asking anyone who protests these decisions to do so peacefully. Officer wilson has been on paid leave and staying out of sight. But he did testify before the grand jury. His Legal Defense team also released a statement saying Law Enforcement personnel must often make tough decisions. We have a statement from the browns. This was to address reporters tomorrow. Itll be interesting to hear what they say in light of all of the protests and damage that were seeing. Again they too as the president had called for people to react to this peacefully. But itll also be interesting to hear what their next step is, most likely a civil lawsuit. Heather thank you. After tonights decision we talked to john burress and he said that based on his own experience hes not surprised here. Jurors are every day people want to believe police dont do anything wrong and they are essentially doing their job. When the point of fact is thats just not true. Reporter burress also says Michael Browns family can now pursue a federal rights case. He is recommending that the brown family do that. In oakland, more than a thousand people marched down the street blocking traffic not once but twice. News chopper 2 is over head both times. The first incident was at 8 30 tonight. Several people made their way on to interstate 580 near lake shore bringing traffic to a stall. They made their way back on to 580. Well have more on that in a moment. But first we go to Ken Pritchett to show us what happened when those demonstrators got on the steps. This is where the demonstration began here in oakland. You can see here right now there are some protests who remain here at this intersection. Theyre crossing the street with their signs. This is a relatively small group that has been here. A much larger group of protesters split off from this group and marched through the streets of oakland. Reporter even before word arrived from ferguson, it was clear they expected no indict. They held a moment of silence before the official announcement was ever made. And then, they marched east on broadway. I think its right to have anger. I think its an unreasonable expectation to ask people to stay calm. Reporter as they attempted to march up the onramp to interstate 880 at 6th street. There they were met by a wall of police. Everyone has been activated and were all out here. We want to make sure we create a safe environment. A Police Cruiser was vandalized before the crowd was turned back. They marched back to city hall before again heading east toward broadway and south on grant. Some buildings were spray painted. The glass door of a bank was shattered and at least two trash cans set on fire. Relatively few incidents from a crowd that marched past lake merit. Possibly 1,000 strong. You can see some of the people that have been arrested for trespassing the freeway. And its still very slow going because people keep jumping on to the road. The crowd multiplied fast. As demonstrators were pushed westbound. People from the neighborhood joined the original marriagers. As opd and hpd scrambled to get the traffic flowing, this was a determined crowd. Im from the neighborhood and i just heard what was going on and i didnt feel i could sit at home. Im just out to express my peace and thats it. Everybody out here is voicing their frustration and theyre doing it peaceful so they know. South of ferguson, were doing it real peaceful but people are upset because im black and im scared to be black in america. Reporter it took up to an hour to clear the street the first time. Officers ordering a defiant crowd out of the traffic lanes, inching them down the crowd trying to get 580 going again. A massive traffic developed with many driverses just getting out of their cars to wait. I sympathize with them on a new level. That Police Brutality is unforgivable. Im not sure this is the way to go about it. Its not good. You dont mind being stuck . No. Reno is not going any where. Reporter we were positioned to capture one man being arrested on the freeway. No doubt many more have been arrested. Although the authorities here tonight are too busy right now to give us an actual count. A take over has shifted to the west and closer to graham. Thats where were told they have the latest scene, protesters on the ground avenue ramp and thats why the freeway cant be reopened. Because of course safety issue s for drives and people that are still out. Chp was on tactical alert in anticipation of the action from ferguson but clearly this took everyone by surprise. Jana katsuyama live in the city now with the reaction there, jana. Reporter earlier police here at the hall of justice said they were prepared for tonights protest with education extra officers tonight. It was peaceful but they shouted their message. Reporter it was not what the crowd wanted to hear. When organized announced the decision, they threw their hands up and shouted. Im outraged by the decision of the grand jury. He was a young black man with a future. Were trying to show theres a pattern thats a national pattern. Its not just in california, not just in ferguson. Reporter the protest was organized by the group answer and finds sympathy for mike brown a shared concern about the rocky past and current relationship. Ferguson is everywhere. Why is it that many police not all, fail to view African American maleless as being men like any other men. And not a threat. Reporter many say the dialogue should continue over the Decisions Police officers make. Theres too many Police Officers who are saying, i felt my job was in danger. And they were saying that against someone who didnt have a weapon. So, like that should be the first training. As protesters ended their rally tonight. Reporter they say they plan to be back at 5 00 p. M. Tomorrow for another protest at the same spot 24th street and mission outside the b. A. R. T. Station. Thank you very much jana. Dennis richmond is as imposing as every even in his jogging suit. Looks like life here is pretty good. Stop, stop. Im trying to fix your hair. Theres nothing wrong with my hair. You had something sticked up. Thats hair on my head. Now you know what we do. I think the first thing people want to do dennis is how are you doing . Im doing well now. Im out of the hospital. Walking around. Reporter dennis was suffering from excruciating pain last month. He was in a tremendous amount of pain. Crying, hurting. Yeah it was horrible. I had to go to the bathroom and i had to crawl to the bathroom. It was that bad. Reporter doctors inserted two metal rods. But the worse part was coming out of surgery. I thought everything was fine but i felt a little bit out of it. Right after, he thought he was president obama and it was 1994. I got wobbly toward the end. As i came on the wall i got real wobbly. I went head first into the wall. And i woke up everybody. She came running. It was like an explosion. The entire hospital woke up. See i told you i wasnt going to fall. No. The one story he wished he could have covered happened just after his retirement. Im wishing i was there. The first black president. He was crying. We were both in tears but he so wanted to do that story. Yeah i should have been there. I should have been there. That was just a few months after i retired. He also misses something else. Oh gosh i miss the viewers. Its just so wonderful when we go down to the bay area and people stop me. I think i have come to the realization that those days are over. Im not going to go back on the air again. I look at some of these anchors who have retired and they wont let go. I let go. Reporter life after four decades, the news isnt so bad. No more deadlines or newsroom pressure just domestic bliss or Something Like that. Get away from me. No, no. Look. We are. Good shot. Were so happy. Reporter and they are happy. Dennis says he gets the itch from time to time to get into a big story but he made it clear that is over. I never thought i would show a picture of dennis wife strangling him. But i just did. He used to love to lift weights. Is he still doing it. He was told by his doctor not to lift anything more than 10pound because of his surgery. When h doctor told him, now you can lift. He said ive been doing 25 pound curls. Thats dennis. You cant do curls with 10 pound, come on. And Debora Villalon called me when he went to the hospital. She was so worried about him. He says hes going to be okay and we certainly hope so. We miss him so much. Thank you ken. If you missed part one of the interview with dennis you can catch it online. We want to check back in with our crews on the streets of oakland where hundreds of people have been protesting that grand jury decision today in ferguson missouri. First we go to ktvus Debora Villalon she is live at mcarthur and graham with the situation there. Reporter theres still quite a bit of activity with protesters. For a time they had a bonfire off that exit ramp where you see the Police Vehicle turning around. They were lighting garbage cans on fire and had blocked that ramp completely. Police arrived and put that fire out and pushed them out of the intersection. Theyre being pushed now west along graham. Its a low process but theres a long line of a few hundred Police Officers down there, theyre inching the protesters along and theyve kind of got them cornered on all sides so this that they cant spread. They cant get back into ramps on to the 580 freeway because after the closures earlier tonight, no one here in downtown oakland wants to see that happen again. Debora thank you, now we want to go to Ken Pritchett. Where protesters have are now marching are starting to return again, ken. Reporter momentarily, this is very much a march on the move. Were here on 14th and broadway. Theres been several protests here online but that large group that broke off, hundreds strong, hundreds of them made their way through here about 15 minutes ago going east down on broadway. The position of the police station. When they came through here they paused momentarily. Chanting no justice no peace. What we did not see is as many Police Following this group here. Again they are headed in the direction of the police station. Were not sure exactly where they are ending up at this point now. Ken pritchett in oakland. That is a fluid situation so keep that in mind if youre going to be out there in the grand lakes theater area. Tracking showers but not for tomorrow or the next day. Its going to be dry around here. Its a spare the air day tomorrow. You can see it way up here. You can see rain thats where it is in vancouver. Its not going to make it down our way until friday night when we will see rain return. No fog around the coast. Winds are light right now. Youre going to see pretty low overnight lows and youre also going to get a spare the air deal tomorrow. The valley fog has a potential to form in your neighborhood especially in the north and east bay. These are current numbers. Not that cool, yeah its chilly but youre going to get mid30s in the coolest spots in the east bay. This is the story till thursday. Till thanksgiving. Then on friday, everything breaks down. And this low comes in. This is not just one, this low sits here and rotates and itll drop one storm in. Another storm. Another storm. Well see a couple of systems roll through as we head friday, really through monday. So here we are friday. This is just a long range model. Friday shows the ridge breaking down. Shows this front. Watch what happens with the low. Just kind of hangs here spinning through. Hangs until monday. It stays green and blue over us. So the indications are we have an extended wet period from about friday night through monday. Fingers crossed on that one because that would be some snow in the mountains and it would be some rain around here. Some areas around here with the last rain we got were up to 50 of average in some places. 60 in others. It needs to be more but thats better than we were. Its a spare the air day tomorrow. Thanksgiving right here looks good and everything kind of goes south if you will. South is a good thing right now because we need the rain and we need the snow. On that pattern is a real productive pattern. Can be a real productive pattern for rain and snow. Lets hope it transpires. Other wise dry through thanksgiving. Looking good bill, thank you. Mark is here now with sports. I thought Pablo Sandoval was going to stay with the giants, i really did. You had that gut feeling. So much for my gut feeling. Panda express headed for boston i guess you might say. We all know by now no crying in baseball and not much room for sentimentality either. Giants were behind playing negotiations and sandoval turned down their officer. Once they sent in big papi to recruit the panda, hes backing it up with an officer from boston and that was it. The giants counter offer repeated to be right around that same neighborhood but sandoval says he wants a new challenge. Possibly a chance to be a dh later in his career and in what was described as an emotional phone call to bobby evans later this afternoon, sandoval informed the giants of his decision and his unsentimental journey to boston. Meanwhile tonight at the castro theater, San Francisco the premier of Major League Baseball about the giants world series conquest over the royals. One of pablos now former teammate, travis ishikawa. Tracking down the film and announcing that pablo is now a part of the red sox. He played hard, he carried us a lot of times. Hes going to be missed here not only with us as players but in the city. I know we all wish him the best. Short workweek for the 49ers. No denying their biggest test yet coming thanksgiving day. Hear what coach harbaugh has to say about that. And monday night football. Two games on tap. Plus unscheduled activity. What are these guys all riled up about. Sports part two next. Awe inspiring would probably not be the best way to describe the 49ers last three victories. Were going to find out in short order where theyre really a play off team or not. The super bowl champs seahawks. Yesterday they beat a decidedly bad washington team. Little else on washington clicked. The defense carrying most of the load again. Coach harbaugh knows full well hes going to see if his team is for real and right quick. A stretch of a play, playing more of those type of teams you project to be in the play offs. Excite about that. If were good enough to be in it well know. Well know soon enough. Play off type of games against play off type of opponents. As good as it gets. Monday night football drew breas 429 yards passing. His team remains in first place and they lost. Despite breas great game, ravens running back justin forsset cal bear, you see the other game there because of the blizzard 383. Bills win in detroit. Thats the sporting life for a monday night. All right, thank you mark. And thank you for joining us tonight. Obviously weve seen quite a bit of destruction this evening in ferguson missouri. More coming up tomorrow morning. Good night
