a blood red sunset over napa county, as thick smoke from several wildfires colors an ominous start to the fire season. good evening, everyone. i'm frank somerville. >> i'm julie haener. fire crews are in the hills east of napa at this hour, where a wildfire is burning on the grounds of a historic spa and resort. the fire started about 6:40 tonight. it is the fourth fire of the day in wine country, fueled by wind and warm weather. a red flag warning has been extended until noon tomorrow and the national weather service is issuing a heat advisory until 9:00 tomorrow night. chief meteorologist, bill martin is going to tell us about record heat on the way. we begin with ktvu's ken wayne, and the fire fighting effort underway in napa right now. >> reporter: the winds have been picking up on and off as it's been getting darker tonight. if you look over the walls of this old historic resort. a few hundred yards out there in the darkness, you might make out the helmet flash flights of the firefighters. it's been a very long day for firefighters across northern california. in fact, the entire state. and it's going to be a very long night. the call cam in at 6:38 this evening. a fire burning in the hills northeast of napa on sodiuma canyon road. within minutes, cal fire launched two helicopters as about 60 firefighters, including department of corrections work crews hit the fire lines on the ground. >> looks like there's power lines down. we've got investigators looking into it. >> the fire is burning at the ruins of the napa silver springs resort. built in the 1950s. the fire burns tonight to a stand of eucalyptus trees, notorious for thst burn. it's dangerous work. even more so when you're exhausted. >> the battalion chief over here has been up since 3:00 last night. things keep happening. >> reporter: we're at the cal fire command center when the call for this fire first came in. >> this is going to be at the end of silver springs road. >> reporter: already experiencing an early start to fire season. keeping firefighters busy. >> we have a large fire, or we have a series of fires in the state our coordination center and executive management prioritize what fires, are our highest priorities. they move and adjust resources. >> reporter: this is back breaking work. i'd like to come back live, if we can, and can show you a small crew that just walked by us on the road in the hills northeast of napa. they're going to be out there hand digging these fire lines on the very steep side of the hill. they're going to be out here all night long. also a very busy night for pge. they said there's only one customer affected by this call. ken wayne, ktvu, channel 2 news. three our wildfires burned today. they started in the morning when the winds were howling. two of the fires were in southern napa, and two were just across the county line in rural sonoma. the largest of those, the yellow fire is still burning near yellow jacket ranch road. it started at about 1:00 a.m. this morning. since then, crews have made steady progress fighting it from the air and the ground. the flames burned close to a couple of vineyards owned by kendall jackson, but no homes are threatened. cal fire says 125 acres have burned, and that right now, the fire is 50% contained. about a half mile up the road, a downed power line sparked another fire near the home where nick and holly trelia live. the home, which they are renting was severely damaged by the flames. >> never had an experience like this. i wouldn't wish this on anybody. but i do feel blessed. >> he says most of what they lost can be replaced with the exception of two precious family photos. he also says that the owners of the house plan to rebuild. a whole different deal tonight in terms of fire fighting. last night, the flames were gusting to 35 to 45 miles per hour in those fire zones. just below the temperature here calm over here near this fire near the silverado fire. look at the winds near the soda fire, just calm at this hour. a very big difference. last night, the winds were howling, firefighters getting a break. they should stay relatively mild tonight. the news here is the red flag warning has been extended until 12:00 tomorrow. so that red flag warning in effect for elevations above 1,000 feet, north and east bay county. when i come back, we've got a heat advisory to talk about. that includes all of us. it's going to get hot around here tomorrow. specifics on that in just about 10 minutes. pg and e blames the winds today for leaving customers without electricity. the flags flying in oakland. you can see it's still breezy, but considerably calmer than this time last night. here's a look at some of today's maximum sustained wind gusts. the gusts reached 48 miles an hour in fairfield. napa hit 40. the wind speeds diminished as you move south. at san jose state today, the sustained gust was 26 miles an hour. stay with ktvu news, as this red flag warning continues. we're going to be monitoring the fires still burning, and bring you the latest information on air and on your mobile device. in downtown oakland, more than 150 people hit the streets tonight as part of a may day protest of the city's minimum wage. eric rasmussen was with those protesters. eric is live outside city hall, where the crowd just broke up in the past couple of hours. >> reporter: people have just about cleared out of here. the only think left behind, a little bit of trash from the food they were serving protesters tonight. this time it did not include any clashes with police. a loud and lofty demand from these protesters in oakland. raise the minimum wage from 8 to $15 an hour. a stop at this taco bell turned tense for a moment, when some protesters briefly went inside the restaurant. but even as this march shut down major city streets, including broadway, and telegraph, the protests remained peaceful. a year ago, occupy oakland protesters clashed with officers who used tear gas and made arrests. this time, police stood back. protesters remain on message. >> workers make the world go round. it's time we get a fair wage. >> reporter: he insists, asking the city of oakland to nearly double the minimum wage is not unreasonable. >> if you go to get a burger, fries, and drink, that's 6 to $8. that's one hour's work for not that great of a meal. you just can't live off that. >> reporter: some bistanders aren't convinced. one business owner was diplomatic. >> could you operate if minimum wage was $15 an hour? >> i think as a business we should be raising our prices. things are going to get expensive for people. >> why the crowd tonight might not have been as large as some, the protesters we spoke to are calling it a success. also in oakland, hundreds of people, mostly immigrant families march through the fruitvale district, demanding immigration reform. news chopper 2 was overhead. one of the marchers we talked to said immigrants like herself do honorable work, and contribute too the u.s. economy. >> more than 1,000 people attended a may day rally this afternoon. the group marched from 24th and mission to civic center. many families participated in the call for immigration reform. the signs were as diverse as the crowd, with banners in a variety of languages. the overall message was the same. >> i think that no human being is illegal. i think that our laws need to change. >> dozens of extra police officers were on hand for the march and rally. there were no incidents. a second group's rally was also abandoned. now to our continuing search for a killer in calaveras county. today, the sheriff's department asked the fbi for help in investigating the stabbing death of 8-year-old laura fowler. investigators say they are still actively searching for crews, and reporter melinda maza has more now, including the new tool authorities are using to try to generate new leads. >> it's just unreal that something like this can happen. >> reporter: reaction from a father about 8-year-old lela fowler stabbed to death in her own home. >> we're still in the beginning stages. but we are making progress. >> reporter: saying the investigation is a top priority. they have now contacted the fbi about the case. >> we have found some dna evidence. i cannot go into any further information on that. collected some fingerprints. we have collected a few knives, those will be examined to determine if one of those knives was the weapon used against lela. of course we've got the death of a child here, so we need to make sure that we cover all of our bases. >> reporter: people in the community are showing support. but some are frightened that the killer is still out there. >> honestly, we're thinking about getting home protection like a rifle. unlocking the doors when he's not at home. >> reporter: a new hotline. it's a 24 hour hotline for anyone with any information. so far, they've received more than 300 tips. melinda mesa, ktvu, channel 2 news. new at 10:00, a word that chris kelly, half of the '90s kid rap duo kris kross has died. ♪ [ music ] the 34-year-old was pronounced dead around 5 this afternoon at an atlanta hospital after being found unresponsive from his home. police say it appears kelly may have died from a drug overdose. kelly along with chris smith shot to stardom in 1992. the two wore their clothes backwards as a gimmick, and regarded one of the '90s most memorable songs with jump. a bay area family is outraged after learning their father's gave is empty. >> what happened to it? he said that's the million dollar question. >> at 10: 10:30, we investigate the mystery. >> in 90 seconds, what a high school coach is accused of doing with kids that got him arrested. a woman and her grandson are safe tonight after a fire destroyed their garage. it happened this evening, around 5:30 in covington drive, in pittsburg. the woman says she was cooking dinner when her grandson came in and told her the garage was on fire. they say at this point it appears to be accidental. a car was destroyed, and the total damage from that fire is estimated to be nearly $100,000. an assistant coach at a high school in walnut creek has been arrested, and charged with having sex with a minor. amber lee is learning more about the coach and the other roles that he played in the community. >> reporter: frank, an attorney for the mount diablo unified school district says the coach was a seasonal employee here, but that he no longer works for the school. 27-year-old christopher yang was an assistant coach for the girl's junior varsity water polo team. he was arrested last thursday for nine felony counts. all involving sex with a minor. his bail was set at $390,000, and he made bail that same day. >> this person is no longer a district employee. it's a personnel matter. i can't say too much about it. we worked very closely with law enforcement. >> reporter: authorities decline to say if the victim was on the water polo team. we went to yang's apartment complex, but there was no answer. we have learned yang also works as a chef at a downtown restaurant. yang's coworkers appear to be unaware of the charges against him. we're told he's worked there for a little more than a year. on a blog for the restaurant, yang promoted healthy eating, and talked about being an athlete. that was at one time, a nationally ranked collegiate swimmer for the university of hawaii. >> our first and primary duty is to protect students. >> reporter: i also spoke with a number of students here at north gate. all told me they did not know yang. they said water polo practice takes place off campus, and that may be why yang was not well known. the martinez boy injured in the boston marathon bombings is back home tonight. his family said aaron spent a lot of time today playing with his new ipod touch. on april 15, aaron hern's legs, both of them, were seriously injured while he was waiting for his mother to cross the finish line at the boston marathon. the herns say friends have been stopping by all day to offer well wishes. he returned home just yesterday from boston after spending much of the past two weeks in a boston hospital. new developments tonight into the investigation of those bombings. three former classmates of dzhokhar tsarnaev have been arrested. two kazakhstan nationals, along with robel phillipos. agents say the trio took a laptop and backpack and threw them away in order to protect their friend. a neighbor of two of those men calls their alleged actions incomprehensible. >> why would you do something so serious like that? disposing of evidence against someone who potentially committed a terror act on the united states of america. >> phillipos is charged with making false statements during a terrorism investigation. continuing coverage now of the may day protests today. in seattle, you saw it there. police used flash bangs and pepper spray, amp they said some demonstrators began throwing objects at them. the clashes came several hours after a peaceful march, calling for immigration reform had ended. several people were arrested, but no serious injuries were reported. here in the bay area, probably the biggest may day rally was in san jose. there was a huge crowd out there tonight, calling for immigration reform. matt keller spoke with a high school student there who's mother is here illegally. matt, she was pretty blunt about just how scary it is. >> reporter: you will hear from her in just a moment. she was one of thousands at tonight's rally, holding up signs like this, and chanting, sending a message to washington to pass immigration reform. people started at two different locations for today's may day march in san jose. several thousand, and several thousand more in our lady of guadalupe church on san antonio street. when they converged near downtown san jose, about 10,000 people stretched through stoplights and into the horizon. >> for the first time in several years, we think there's a real window of opportunity. there's hope out there. >> reporter: organizers are pushing congress to pass comprehensive immigration reform, that includes a road map for citizenship, racing the job quality for all workers and keeps families together. a high school student came to the u.s. at age 15, and is still hoping to get her citizenship. the possibility her mother could be deported weighs heavily on her mind. >> when we pass by, or look at a cop, i just think, please don't look at my mom. please don't ask her anything, just keep going. >> reporter: on the political front, the san jose city council passed a resolution in march, urging the congress to pass immigration reform. san jose congresswoman is part of a bipartisan group, meeting in the house hoping to reach common ground. >> there are very divergent view points between the democratic and republican parties. being able to move forward is tough. but we're trying to make that happen. i think the country needs it. >> reporter: congresswoman lof tgren wouldn't put a time limit on when a bill would be introduced in the house. that regular flag warning has been extended until tomorrow at noon. i want to thought that current wind conditions, it's all about a southwesterly component. that is some good news. as we look at the temperatures currently, it's very cool right along the coast. half moon bay is 51 degrees. 58degrees in san francisco. the cool moist air has kind of got a light moist flow. east of concord, you're still dealing with upper 70s, lower 80s. tomorrow, the winds coming up out of the west and southwest are going to start moving out of the northeast. that's going to heat us up. we've got a heat advisory for the entire bay area with record temperatures pretty much all over the place. i'll give you a specific forecast for tomorrow's record heat event, then a bay area family is devastated after discovering their father's remains are not where they thought they were. now, a painful search is underway to try to find out what happened to them. that is the focus of tonight's special report. >> hi daddy. >> hey grandpa. >> reporter: this quiet gravesite has brought a sense of comfort to the sloan family for many years. it marks the final resting spot of several family members. including their father, who they describe as a war veteran, and the best daddy in the world. >> i still come here to pay respect to him. his marker is still here. we still have other family members here, but it's a different feeling now. >> reporter: 16 years after attending their father's funeral, and burial here, joseph sloan's two daughters decided to disinterhis cremated remains. they wanted to move them to fremont to be by his mother's ashes when she passes away. they wanted it to remain that way for eternity. they notified ever green cemetery and said they wanted a family member present for the disinternment. she says she was shocked to learn the disinternment had already taken place. >> there were massive amounts of dirt. our grave had been disrupted. the headstone had been moved. >> reporter: then karen says, she learned the devastating news. her father's remains, his urn and the vault they were placed in, along with special family mementos could not be located. >> i never imagined in a million years that he was not there. >> reporter: buck camphousen is the cemetery's owner. >> in 50 years, i personally have never seen this. >> reporter: they began the disinternment, because the sloans never gave written notification they wanted to be present. >> if they had said they wanted to be here, then we would have waited for the family to be here. >> reporter: when the cemetery determined the vault wasn't where it was indicated on the map, camphousen says he ordered a thorough search. workers set up a grid program. >> no other remains in this area as far as we know have been disturbed. just this one. >> reporter: he can't explain what happened to the missing vault. he also dispels any notion grave robbers could be to blame. and he says, since the sloan burial site is located right next to the office window, if it had been disturbed, someone would have noticed. >> you've not only had to go through burying him once. but now not knowing where he is, what is that like? >> empty, just completely empty. >> reporter: the family is now taking legal action against evergreen cemetery. >> basically, the cemetery made a promise. it made one of the most important promises that anyone can make, to safeguard the remains of a loved one. >> there is absolutely nothing that we can do. >> reporter: the sloans want their attorneys to dig deeper and help solve the mystery of what happened to their father's remains. >> i want to bring him back home to fremont. don't know where he is. >> reporter: for now, when the family wants to pay their respects to their father, they have to visit two empty gravesites. the one in oakland, and the new one in fremont. i also asked the daughters if there is any possibility, another family member could have moved their father's remains years earlier and not told them. their response? was held for some who could not be identified. in dagistan, a bomb exploded in the capitol city. at least two teenagers died when they opened a box left outside a store. dagistan officials blamed illegal armed groups. in bolivia, the president said he plans to throw out american aide workers. he accused of the u.s.a. agency of trying to undermine his government. he says u.s. aid is funneling an aircraft believed to have been part of one of the planes used in the 9/11 attacks. that part weighed 225 pounds, and was loaded onto the back of a truck. surveyors found it last week in an alley near the world trade center. it was wedged behind the site of an islamic community center. work leaders had to use a pully to free that piece of wing. >> actually getting it over that wall, it's a three story wall, and maneuvering it between a fire escape, a pretty old fire escape. >> that piece will now head to a new york police facility in brooklyn. the city's medical examiner by the way says there are no human remains in that area. it is a problem law enforcement is all too aware of. in california, thousands of people, including many felons owning guns are in violation of the law. the problem with enforcing that law is money. ken pritchett tells us about the new funding approved today, and the tragic reason behind it. >> reporter: with a table full of high powered weapons on display. the attorney general called the signing of this bill an important day for california. >> we have over 20,000 people on the streets of california right now, who are known to be in violation of the law, are known to be in possession of firearms. >> reporter: harris is referring to a list of people in california prohibited of owning guns. mostly felons and the mentally impaired. today, governor brown signed a deal to seize those guns. the money can be traced back to the tragic sandy hook school shooting in december. that prompted state lawmakers in february to hold hearings when it learned that law enforcement efforts to go after guns and people on the banned list were falling short. >> over the course of last year, we seized 1889 firearms. over 110,000 rounds of ammunition. >> reporter: because of a lack of funding, the number of arrests and guns seized only made a dent. that money approved today intends to stop a problem. >> he had 71 guns and he wasn't supposed to have any. >> reporter: the additional funding will last three years. it's estimated the 20,000 people on the prohibited list own 40,000 handguns and assault weapons. ken pritchett, ktvu, channel 2 news. federal courthouses in the bay area are now being furloughed as part of the government's sequestered cuts. they are scheduled to close one day a month. san francisco and san jose plan to close the first friday of each month. oakland plans to close on the first monday of each month. the first furlough days are planned for this friday and next monday. the closures are scheduled to last through september. rapper little wayne is making news again tonight with both an apology and a hospitalization. according to tmz, the 30-year- old was taken to an l.a. area hospital last night after he suffered a seizure. he was released this morning. the rapper did not confirm that, but did tweet i'm fine, thanks. also today. the family of emmitt till released a letter from the rapper, two apologized to an obscene lyric about a 14-year- old who was murdered. a member of a mountain rescue team happened to be climbing in the same area was the first to reach the man, and stayed with him while others arrived. it's warm out there in the inland valleys, the red flag warning still in effect, north and east bay hills above 1,000 feet. that red flag warning lasts until tomorrow around lunchtime. the winds aren't that strong. fire danger remains high. it's dry. and it's pretty warm. tomorrow will be warmer still. that heat advisory goes into effect through the day tomorrow. it's going to be in the afternoon hours and early evening hours. we're going to see temperatures in the 80s and 90s in some of the big heated areas. if i didn't mention, downtown san francisco and you get a lot of heat on those buildings, it really heats up. the south winds today, we had a little bit cooler coasts today. those back down tomorrow. and we get kind of a north- northeast wind as we head into thursday. that's going to warm things up. not the strong winds, but the mechanism for warning basketball that offshore flow. lots of 80s and 70s, look how warm it is all the way to the coast. it's going to be a really warm one tomorrow, with temperatures easily into the 90s in the warmer spots. it's going to be hot tomorrow. let's take a look at san francisco downtown. that's a pretty big deal. temperatures at 6:00 a.m. in the mid-50s. look at 8:00 a.m., 65 degrees. by 10:00 a.m. in san francisco, you're coming up on 80 degrees. by lunchtime, you're around 85. that's really, really warm. that's going to be in downtown san francisco. that's one of the reasons we're seeing that heat advisory being issued. the forecast then for cities where you live, 93 in sonoma. 94 in fairfield, with 89 in richmond. 95 in walnut creek. really warm out. there 96 in livermore. hot day tomorrow. heat advisory. be prepared for that. lots of fluids. coop an eye on your pets too, and the elderly. make sure you have circulation in your house, it's going to be warm. the real heat shows up into tomorrow. then it starts to cool off. you'll see that in the five-day forecast with cooler forecasts on friday and saturday. which is nice. the red flag warning in effect. that's the real story. firestorms in the north bay, not as windy as it was last night. that's really the good news. but the heat
