America. And how it helped shape mail delivery. It was called the war to end all wars tomorrow marks the 95th anniversary of the end of world war i. All across america there was great celebration when the german surrender brought a conclusion to the first global conflict. These are scenes from San Francisco on that day november 11, 1918. It was another celebration in San Francisco 21 2 years earlier that led to one of the most notorious criminal arrests in history. Tom muney was to blame. Reporter july 22, 1916 was called preparedness day by the organizers of this parade up Market Street. They the organizers were San Franciscos establishment. The chamber of commerce, the con essentialtive business elite. The idea of the parade was to stir up patriotic feelings. What we now call world war i. Abersonhost, father of the host newspaper took a prominent position in the parade. What the spectators didnt see were the people who were not in the parade. The citys unions were asked to march but most did not. It would be working mens and their sons who would have to fill those trenches and die in far away places for a cause that seemed remote to them. Still the parade seemed festive and stirring to the audience that crowded the sidewalks. At 2 06 p. M. As the parade was rounding stewart street and heading up market, a suitcase someone had left on the sidewalk exploded. It was a horrific blast. It killed 10 people. Seriously injured 30 or 40 more. A hursn newsreel camera reached a few moments later. Bodies were being loaded into vans other bodies were being searched by police to find identification inside their bloody clothes. Their corpses were shattered, their clothes in rags. Authorities look for someone to blame. They found a culprit in tom muney. A rally for the socialist party in 1908, muney carried a banner for the partys candidate. He became a thorn on the side to business districts. The citys money man hired a detective to find evidence against muney. And to trump up evidence if necessary. Fred glass a labor historian who teaches at San Franciscos city college has studied the muney case. He said it was a time of all out war between unions and management. Whatever the el employees and workers can get away with it happened. A few years before the preparedness day bombing. The Los Angeles Times was blown up by iron workers because harrison ottis was so anti union. Reporter in that atmosphere it was easy to convince that muney was responsible. At his trial for murder, witnesses against muney told what were later exposed as lies. John mcdonald testified he saw billings and muney at the scene of the explosion with a suitcase. He later recounted. This is miley edo and his daughter claim to have seen muney too. Later it was proved that they would have had to be at two places at the same time about a mile apart. They said they were present in one place but spiritually present in t other. We know for sure he was innocent first because there was a photograph taken with muney in it before the bomb went off a mile and a half away from where it happened. Reporter the photo shows muney at a building window with a clock in the photo. He could not have arrived at the bomb scene on time. But the jury never saw that photo. Judge Franklin Griffin decided it was not admissible. The testimony against him fell apart as the witnesses lies became known. Efforts to get him a new trial failed. One california governor after another denied him of pardon. The years crawled by. Muneys lawyers got him a new trial and he was allowedded to make a statement to the press. I have suffered 17 years of a cruel and unjust imprisonment. For other reason that i was an active militant unionist. Fighting the troubles of the working people. Today i am today their symbol of struggle. Ladies and gentlemen, i want to thank you for your kind, understanding attention here tonight. And i hope that some day we will have the opportunity to meet under more auspicious circumstances. The jury acquitted him but he still had to serve time for the other deaths. At last, Colbert Olson pardoned tom muney. Immediately upon leaving jail, muney was escorted to Market Street where in virtually the same place where the bomb had gone off a parade headed up Market Street, 50 or 60,000 strong led by the longshoreman. Tom muney up ahead of it. And hundreds of thousands of spectators linedded Market Street and muney walked up blowing kisses to the crowd. Tom muney died six years later. Oakland became the leading shipping resource on the west coast. In 1917 to 1920, oakland shipbuilders built and launched an astounding are 51 2 Million Dollars of ships. So when the boys came home from the war, thousands of oaklanders welcomed them home. After all there was a lot to be happy about. It was over over there, business was booming. When america entered world war ii it was supplying 90 of the oil to fight the war. The government was shipping 90,000barrels of oil to europe every day. The use of oil revolutionized the way war was waged. Oils fueled the planes, tanks, ships and that fueled the war. By the end of the war america was consuming more oil than it could produce. There was a real fear that the nation was running out of oil. In 1919 American Companies were spending 400 million in marketing and oil refining. By 1925, they were spending a billion dollars on exploration alone. At home, oil began to literally gush. Production doubled from 1918 to 1923. By 1929 it had tripled and past the billion barrel mark for the first time. In the 1920s, Alameda County was the Fastest Growing area in the country. And with the growth came the reliability on the automobile. With chevrolet andford operating in oakland the city became known as the detroit of the west. Ferry boats did an admiral job of shuttling people and automobiles back and forth. As far as cars were concerned there was a better way to link San Francisco and oakland. At the cost of 75 million the San Francisco oakland bay bridge was built. The opening of the bridge in 1936, the ferries and the interurban transit systems were doomed the bridge would be the workhorse of the bay area transportation. Just as it changed the economic landscape of the east bay. World war ii also changed the Political Landscape of the united states. Women still didnt have the right to vote. But as they filled in for men during the war, president Woodrow Wilson changed his mind. Like never before in history americas women pitch into the fight. New york got female cops. Shortages had forced the ladies to give up their steel corsett but they gained their even the precarious professional staple jack had it female partitioners. World war ii also changed the map of the world. As George Watson told us in this 1991 report, if you look at the middle east today, many of the companies did not exist a century and a half ago. The make up of the middle east would be recast. Before the wars end in 1917 the turks at war with the allies still controlled palestine and most of the middle east. How world war ii factored into the deadly flu epidemic of 1918. Tonight on a second look, the 95th anniversary of the end of world war i is tomorrow. World war i didnt bring about airmail service. That actually started in 1911 but it did give it a huge boost. A surplus of army planes right after the war greatly expanded the fleet of planes to deliver the mail. Their planes were unreliable, under powered and unable to cope with bad weather. Pilots risked their lives and many died flying the mail. But those Airline Pilots shrunk our world. Inspired adventurers and president s and adventures such as glen curtis. It also set postal officials thinking and the first to act was here in Northern California postmaster j. E. Holmsteat. He asked a former car racer to fly the mail. Wiseman had just flown his other almost identical airplane in a big aviation show in San Francisco. The landing damaged his plane, he fixed it and waited overnight. 18miles, two days, but fred wiseman became the first of a remarkable codway of aviators. A few years later, the u. S. Finding that it is overstocked with war planes, they began scheduling air flights regardless of weather. Breezos followed rail ways and. It was dangerous business. 32 pilots one out of six who flew the mail died trying to deliver it. Very dangerous. Very dangerous because they had the same motto. Rain, snow, sleet or hail. And they would go flying in that type of weather. In 1931, congress considered blocking the airmail. Simultaneous air flights between new york and San Francisco. They flew at night in sports. Remember they had no navigation equipment. One plane crashed the pilot died but the mail continued in another airplane. Six bags of letter crossed the country in 23 hours, thats three days faster than the best trained soldier. As for the pilots most went on to astounding aeronautical careers. Something we call a super infection. Something that comes after the infection. Of every 100 people exposed three died. Today theres a new clue to that old epidemic based on a fundamental fact of population that women on average live longer than men. After the 1918 epidemic the difference between male and female longevity all but disappeared. It was as though men were suddenly healthier. What a researcher has found is now rewriting the history of that epidemic. That was the unusual thing that was crying out for an explanation. Demographer studies blips and population trend. He discovered that sex difference quirk. People at risk are infants and the elderly. In 1918, the flu was spreading in adults. And working aged men more likely had tuberculosis then.
