Classes at Vallejo High School are back to normal after an explosion injured two people and forced students to evacuate. Brian flores is there and joins us live. Reporter good afternoon to you. The scene has now been cleared and many students returned to class this afternoon. In the meantime worried parents came to pick up their kids. Behind me is the football field where several students were evacuated this morning and two workers as well are recovering after the gas explosion at the high school. The fire Officials Say they were called at 8 20 this morning because of reports of the explosion that happened in an unoccupied classroom in the back of the campus. Officials with the School District say two Maintenance Workers were working on a heating system that had been odor in a minute since the dormant since the napa earthquake. After repairs were made they turned on the gas last night. When the workers went to reignite the heating system, thats when the explosion happened. That particular classroom which was not occupied, one of the last to be used, the technician went on and bleeded the line and as he was igniting it, it blew. Reporter the district says at no time were students in danger. The classroom that the workers were in is used for photography mostly and was likely used last semester. After the explosion, the students were quickly evacuated to the football field. Despite the scene being declared safe. Some parents did not want to take any chances and picked up the kids. I heard they were going to put them back in class and i was like no, man. That dont make no sense. I drove all the way from fairfield. I was outside for p. E. And all of a sudden, a loud explosion and people screaming and running and somebody hit the ground and was rolling and there was a lot of explosions. Reporter heavy damage inside the classroom from what one student describes some are back in class and the campus has been deemed safe by fire officials and the cause of the fire is under investigation. They believe the man is connected with at least two incidents involving 16yearold girls. However, they are still investigating whether hes connected with a third incident from last night when a 19year old student reported that a suspicious man offered her money to leave with him in his car. The suspect in that case is described as asian, possibly filipino, about 30 years old. Short, spikey hair, and last seen driving a dark colored sedan. Police plan to release a sketch later today. The oakland teenager who set a teens skirt on fire on a bus was back in court today for sentencing. Richard thomas was charged as an adult. He pled no contest under a plea agreement. The judge approved a sevenyear sentence agreed upon under the plea deal. He used a lighter to set the skirt of an 18yearold on fire. The mother spoke in court. This is horrible what you did but we dont hate you. We dont think that hate it creates more hate. We want you to come out of prison not being hateful. And were hoping that youll be able to stand up for those that are bullied. Thomas says he lit the fire as a prank. She suffered 2nd degree and this had burns. Investigators say at the intersection of stockton and broadway streets, were hearing unconfirmed reports that a victim was hit and the driver was trying to park his vehicle. Emergency crews took the man to the hospital. Theres no word on the extent of the injuries. People who knew a blind man struck and killed by a car in a crosswalk say more needs to be done at that intersection to prevent future tragedies. The accident happened last night on Market Street near 62nd video it and the berkley city line. Reporter friends of 37year old met at the mosque this morning to pray for their friend struck and killed by an suv last night. I could not sleep all night thinking about him, thinking of knowing of his children. Reporter the highly religious man was on his way to the mosque when he was hit in the crosswalk. The driver was going too fast. Our neighbor came and knocked really hard on our door and he was shaking and he was like, oh, your dad, your dad. Reporter she rushed to the scene with her mother. We saw him on the floor and they were doing the cpr on him and they were trying really hard. My mom started crying and everything like that and it was really horrible. Reporter neighbors say its difficult to cross the street because of how much traffic there is. Imagine youre blind and all you have to rely on is hearing and touch. This is what it was like for him every day for six years. Reporter the father of five children, ages three to 16 lost his vision six years ago due to a genetic condition. Even though he was blind he recognized my voice and he always made the effort to speak and i appreciated him for that. When you lose your sight, what is that to live but he had more insight within him and that was beautiful. Reporter he was trying to learn braille and get a job. But his diabetes made his fingers numb so he helped out at home. Hes been there for me and all of us and hed been hoping me in my home work and stuff like that. And i will never forget him. Hes really, really sweet. Reporter officers say this was not a hitandrun. The driver stopped and cooperated. Neighbors are now going to push the city to install a traffic light to make the intersection safer so this tragedy does not happen to anyone else. In oakland, ktvu channel 2 news. Police are searching for clues after a babys body was found in a box under a mobile home. A maintenance manmade the discovery. The man was doing some Maintenance Work and went into a crawl space and found the box with a bow wrapped around it. When he opened the box he found a babys body inside. I took the and saw the little head. I think i find a little dead baby in a box. Police are now trying to figure out how long the babys body has been there and who may have put it there. The place has been vacant for a while and the previous owners left in a big rush. And there have been reports of people in and out of the home since it was abandoned. A suspension handed down by the south korean government as a result of the crash at San Francisco airport. A San Francisco woman is facing robbery and Assault Charges after an attack inside a nordstroms restroom. It happened at the stone town galleria. 22yearold chelsea cole is charged with robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, and possession of stolen property. Nordstrom security detained cole after the assault and held her until police arrived. The victim was treated for minor injuries. New details in the investigation surrounding the death of a baby gorilla at the San Francisco zoo. The lead investigator on the case says the gorilla enclosure is outdated and unsafe. The 16monthold died last friday when she was crushed while darting under an electric door that was closing. The zookeeper is supposed to keep a hand on the emergency top button. This according to a scathing report by Homeland Security that found fault with the secret service in nearly a dozen areas, including communications, training, and intelligence. That allowed Omar Gonzalez to jump the fence with a knife, run across the lawn and enter the first familys home. It let to the resignation of the secret service director. It was a series of failures that led to one failure and thank god nothing tragic occurred. Reporter the new report has stunning revelations including that the alarm systems and radios did not work properly. And many of the officers on duty did not see gonzalez as he climbed the 8foot high fence. The fence was missing an ornamental spike that might have slowed him down. And a secret Service Agent with an attack dog was allegedly talking on a cell phone instead of listening to his two way radio when gonzalez moved in. The city of san jose is planning to review its policies after Police Officers accepted free 49ers tickets. The police chief is among those who received tickets to 49ers games last year at candlestick park. The city of san jose has a rule that bans city officials from accepting gifts valued at more than 50. The Police Command staff violated the ordinance even though they reported the tickets to the city. The command staff has reimbursed the 49ers for the cost of the tickets. A prowler has been captured. It happened around 1 00 this morning at a hiationing complex a housing complex. Police overheard two men arguing and the officer found people chasing a man who they say had broken into their apartment. We call it a hot prowl or a residential burglary. Our daytime residential burglaries are on a little bit of an uptick. Aggressive drivers, be warned. The Highway Patrol will be looking for you more than ever on bay area roadways. The chp received a federal grant for the crackdown and it will add more officers on patrols to look for drivers who speed, do unsafe lane changes or tailgate. According to the most recent statistic from 2011, aggressive driving in california contributed to 1100 deaths and more than 100,000 injuries. Commercial fishermen have dropped the crab pots into the ocean to kick off the dungeness crab season but theyll have to wait until tomorrow to pull them up. Thats when the season officially begins. This season, fishermen were hoping for 3. 50 a pound and are happy with the price that has been set. Looks like its going to be a good season. We have a fair price. State law permits them to harvest male crabs only. And they must be six and a quarter inches across.
