Im cristina rendon. Tori campbell is off. We begin with preparations underway right now for a natural disaster. San francisco Public Schools are taking part in an earthquake drill in response tonight napa earthquake. Alex savidge has more. Reporter good afternoon. Well, what happened in napa this past weekend was certainly an important reminder that Everyone Needs to know what to do when the shaking starts and with that in mind, we were hear inside la Fayette Elementary School in San Francisco this morning for a very important drill. After hearing an emergency announcement from the principal, this was the scene as students in this fifth grade class all immediately dropped to the floor, got under their desks and covered their heads. This was part of a districtwide earthquake drill prompted by sundays 6. 0 quake in the napa area. After the students sheltered under their desk, teachers evacuated their classes out to the playground and some kids say they understand how important this kind of practice is. There will be times when earthquakes will happen when were at school. We need to be ready for it and know what to do. It shouldnt be a surprise to us. Because if you are in a real earthquake, you need to cover your head so you dont get hurt severely or if it hits your leg its not as severe. Reporter and the phrase you might remember during earthquake drills is duck and cover. But these days students here in San Francisco are taught to shelter and cover. The idea of sheltering implies protecting yourself. One of the teachers here told me that ever since sundays earthquake shes been talking to her students about how to respond in the case of a disaster here and she says she was proud of how her kids did today. I think they did a fantastic job. They are san franciscans. So of course, none of this was new to them. Many of them have been through little jolts before. But todays activity is gonna make them even more prepared. Reporter the principal here told me the students at la fayette elementary do earthquake drills about once a month but todays drill will be especially help f. M. And thats because he says the kids are practicing so soon after a real earthquake and for that reason, they tend to pay closer attention. Were live this afternoon in San Francisco, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. All right. Thank you, alex. Now to our continuing coverage of the napa quake. Building inspectors say the citys Historic Downtown courthouse was badly damaged and could be shut down for the next two years. Repairs could cost as much as 20 million. It was built until 1870s. Always hayess have been cases have been transferred to the courthouse across the street. The sit is hoping to restore water to everyone in napa by the end of the day. At this point, its not clear if the city will reach the goal. Weve learned there are 20 water line leaks that are still needing repairs. Thats down from 120 breaks right after the quake. Currently, there are about 200 customers still without water. Thats compared to the nearly 400 customers who didnt have water this morning. One pizza parlor in downtown napa is shut down despite going through the earthquake with flying colors. It was retrofitted before the quake. But the buildings that back up to the peteia shop are considered pizza shop are considered dangerous. The lawyer who owns the brown Street Building has rejected calls to retrofit the properties. The idea of spending a lot of money on that when its not necessary doesnt make a lot of sense to me. He says he doesnt think its necessary. It looks necessary to me. The Property Owner says the city is overreacting. He plans to expand and remodel all buildings and will retrofit them at the time. He says its a timetable the city agreed to. Napa building inspectors are continuing to go through the city looking for unsafe buildings. They red tagged this historic pink victorian home as it shifted off the foundation. Its among the growing number of buildings that have been ruled too dangerous to enter. Theyve red tagged 170 buildings in the last five days. As a sign of the city trying to recover, the annual city napa nights concert tonight will go on as planned. And we have more information about how you can help with efforts. Go to ktvu.
