Two people are dead after a fiery crash at a San Francisco offramp. It all started with a chase from oakland across the bay bridge at speeds up to 130 miles an hour. Good afternoon. Im tori campbell. Tara moriarty just spoke to an eyewitness and joins us live from the scene of the crash. Tara . Reporter well, things are back to normal here at the fifth street offramp but thats only after the chp had to shut it down for six hours because of that fiery crash. Flames could be seen from the freeway above when the speeding convertible flipped and landed before fifth and harrison street. The two people inside were instantly killed. And this all began as the chp chase around 3 00 this morning in oakland. Officers noticed the stolen bmw out of San Francisco heading northbound on 880 before the macarthur maze. A witness shared her cell phone video of the pursuit across the bay bridge which reached excessive speeds. They were probably going 100. I actually saw the flames and smelt them. It i was over the freeway where it caught on fire. Reporter the chp says the officers are trained to handle highspeed chases and even practice on a racetrack. A pursuit is its very intense. Its a risk verses gain issue. In this case, it was late at night. There wasnt a lot of traffic. We take all of those conditions into consideration during a pursuit. New developments in the arson Investigation Underway in San Francisco. Now the Fire Department says there have been three more arsons in the last 48 hours. They occurred in different parts of the city, including Market Street and the tenderloin. Investigators have not announced whether the cases are connected to a string of arsons in the citys south of market neighborhood. In that case, investigators are looking for a man seen in surveillance pictures loitering in an area where several dumpster fires recently occurred. New details about an oakland firefighter critically injured yesterday when his fire truck flipped over at the airport. We received an update that mitchell ow is awake an breathing on his own. The 28year veteran was driving the fire truck as part of a monthly drill. It was an aircraft rescue firefighting rig equipped to carry 3,000 gallons of road and 420 gallons of foam. It rolled as ow was making a turn. He was rushed to Highland Hospital with lifethreatening injuries. Right now, the department is in shock. Like i said, this firefighter was very well known and liked with all of the members within the organization. A source tells us hes married with no children. We dont know how fast he was driving at the time of the crash but chp and cal osha are now investigating. More than a dozen people are looking for another place to live this afternoon afternoon a huge fire tore through this Apartment Building in oakland this morning. Cruz and his roommate lost everything in the fire. They are not sure where they are gonna live. They are grateful they survived. Shes very smart. Reporter and cruz credits this fourlegged hero. Alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. Police are investigating a string of burglaries in one of the bay areas most affluent cities. Investigators are looking into three residential burglaries in hillsborough yesterday. There were breakins at a home on marlboro and avondale road, another on church hill drive and the third at Calaveras Court and lakeview drive. Its unclear if the burglaries are connected. Officers hope neighbors have Surveillance Video that might help in their investigation. In an effort to reduce the amount of pedestrian deaths on city streets, San Francisco is looking into ways to reduce the speed limit in certain parts of the city. According to reports, the city plans to conduct a study to examine reducing the citys speed limit by five to ten miles per hour. Already this year, 21 pedestrians have been killed in San Francisco and one of the most dangerous intersections in the city is yorba and sunset. This morning sfpd was at that intersection looking for speeders. But some people in the area say more needs to be done. Ive almost gotten hit even when im walking and other cars are stopped. The cars behind them dont notice this stop and rear end them. Happens all of the time. The stoplight will be built at yorba and sunset in the coming weeks. As for the study, its expected to be completed by the fall. The citys goal is to have zero pedestrian families in the next decade. A dire warning today from senator Barbara Boxer who says the countdown is on for a transportation government shutdown. Thats because the Highway Trust Fund is running on fumes. That bill would provide 9 billion worth of federal funding for projects nationwide for december. It would be paid for by closing tax loop holes but House Republicans say that means increasing taxes and they wont agree to it. Let them come up with their plan. Lets look at it. Lets work together. Reporter i did speak with the Senate Finance committee today and officials there tell me both republicans and democrats are gonna sit down tomorrow and try to hammer out a compromise. Police are searching for gunmen who shot two people in east oakland last night leaving a woman dead. Investigators say it happened on Douglas Avenue not far from the oakland coliseum. About 6 45 last night. The 49yearold woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A man who was also shot took himself to the hospital. His injuries were not life threatening. In morgan hill, police are searching for these three people wanted for attempted murder in a driveby shooting. Investigators believe an argument between 22yearold Francisco Diaz and 21yearold Nicholas Young led up to the shooting. Deja marie is believed to be the driver. One person was wounded in the shooting but is expected to survive. Police say the three suspects are considered armed and dangerous. Today, the u. S. Supreme court said in a unanimous ruling that a warrant is required for police to search the cell phone of a criminal suspect. The justices said smartphones are different from other items such as the suspects wallet or car. Police can generally search those other items if they can probable cause of a crime. But the justices said that digital devices require stricter privacy litigation. If for some reason they want to pull you for something, they would be to be like oh, you were texting and driving.
