Stinson beach is shut down today after a great white shark sighting. The shark was spotted devouring a seal off the coast. David stevenson is there and is live on the phone. Good afternoon, david. Reporter good afternoon. Just to be clear, the beach is open for folks who want to hang out on the sand but they are not allowed to go in the water. Im standing underneath a lifeguard tower from which the great white was from where the great white was spotted. Theres about four dozen people on the beach. Nobody is going in the water, thanks to signs that have been posted along the beach and in parking lots alerting folks theres a ban on swimming. This shark im told was spotted fairly close to shore not far from a finned whale that beached itself sunday night or early monday morning that we covered yesterday. That along with a report from a fishing vessel about this great white prompted the coast guard to do some aerial surveillance of the scene. They didnt spot the shark but beachgoers were told to get out of the water around 3 00 yesterday. The National Park service describes it as a 10 to 15foot shark. They say it may have been attracted close to the attracted close to the area. At this point, the water is overcast. Its cool. It will burn off. Theoretically that would attract a lot more people to go in the water. You are welcome to the beach. You are not you are not allowed to go in the water. Police are trying to track down the person responsible for shooting up a vietnamese restaurant hitting three men one man died. Janine de la vega joins us now from the scene. Good afternoon, janine. Reporter good afternoon, tori. Police have left the scene but you can still see some of the evidence best behind. Bullet holes are in the restaurant and the windows and i looked inside. You can still see theres a lot of blood in there. Owners have a lot of cleaning up to do before they can open again. People who live near the restaurant were not pleased to see bullet holes riddling the outside when they visited the strip mall on alum rock. Its feeling awkward and unsafe and unsecure. Reporter police say at 10 00 last night, numerous gunshots were fired into the restaurant and bar, startling customers. Three men were hit. It was like two, three shots. At first we didnt Pay Attention to it. And then about 20 minutes later, those we knew it was five shots. The victims were taken to the hospital. Two had nonlifethreatening injuries but the other man died. Police describe him as asian in his mid30s. Sources say he was an engineer just enjoying a drink with friends. They were just patrons inside the restaurant. Somebody shot inside of the business from outside. Reporter was it random . It appears to be random at this time. Reporter crime scene investigators spent hours combing through the scene collecting evidence. They interviewed other patrons but no one saw the shooter. Its always drist when you dont have difficult when you dont have witnesses at the beat ginn at the beginning. Reporter some say they are not surprised the shooting happened. Its a shame it took somebodys life. I could just hope that san jose, they have more patrol. Reporter police do not have any suspect information at this time. Pittsburg police are looking for two men in connection with a Home Invasion robbery where a mother of two was beaten. Police say the woman and her two Young Children were inside the home on bending willow way when the two men forced open a secondstory window. They confronted the woman and demanded money. The children stayed in their rooms. The woman complied with the with the robbers but tried to press a panic button on her home alarm and thats when the robbers hit her. Neighbors are shocked this happened in their quiet, Family Friendly neighborhood. It brings about a little fear to me. Its a very quiet neighborhood. We are all working families, go and come, and you you have to be safe. I always tell my daughters to make sure everything is locked up. You never know who will be coming through checking windows and doors. Reporter police say theres no descriptions of the two suspect, they were wearing hooded sweatshirts. They may have left the neighborhood in a silver suv. In less than a threehour span last night, the National Weather service reported more nan 11,000 lightning strikes around the bay area. Also some of that fog 207b the coast is keeping temperatures very cool there. Sea breeze is really ramped up. More of a westerly wind. Even gusts to about 30. Yesterday it was almost calm conditions. We had very hot weather. Today you can see the low still spinning. Its far away. Theres not a lot coming off the sierra, the rain line continues to move north but were not done yet. The main issue, theres a lot of fog. Tonight, tomorrow could be more in line for another round of lightning but things look a lot quieter today. As we mentioned, people across the bay area were treated to an amazing show. Alex savidge explains why most of the lightning came down in the perfect place. Reporter the skies lit up with a rare Lightning Storm over the bay area. And the 24hour total today is staggering. More than 15,000 lightning strikes since noon yesterday. Although not all of them hit the ground. For some this burst of electricity brought back fond memories. With a flurry of activity between 6 00 and 8 00 last night, an impressive show, although it wasnt quite as fun for some scared pets. Enjoyed what i saw from the drapery. My cat didnt like it but that was okay. Reporter all of this dry lightning left firefighters on edge worried about wildfires. But thankfully, there was a Silver Lining to this storm. The National Weather service tells me about 90 of the lightning came down over the ocean. We really dodged a bullet last night with regards to where the lightning strikes that hit the ground occurred. Reporter this morning, the National Weather service was still reporting lightning strikes. About 150 miles offshore. The storm system that lit up the bay area last night has passed through. Theres still the possibility of another light show tonight. In pacifica, alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. Red flag warning has prompted calfire to reopen a lock jute station near mount hamilton. It sits 4400 feet above santa clara county. Calfire volunteer John Whiteside will be looking out for smoke and he will remain at the post from dawn until dusk until the red flag warning is lifted. Right now crews are battling at least 11 wildfires burning all across the state. Calfire considers nine throughout the state. The largest is the socalled swedes fire which has burned more than 2800 acres in butte county. So far several structures have been destroyed. Although the fire is 75 contained, crew worries the progress theyve made could be in jeopardy. We do have thunderstorms developing and so that also poses a threat to us and to the to the progress. Were just hoping that the thunderstorms are not bringing dry dry lightning our way. Earlier today, some of the evacuation orders were lifted but crews remind residents that could all change quickly. The cars roof was sheared off. The woman protected her head. She did something that allowed her to survive the collisionbationed on the damage to her car. The parkway was shut down in both directions for a time. All lanes are now open. Oakland city crews are cleaning up a big tree that fell on top of a parked car near the west oakland b. A. R. T. Station. We heard from one city official that no one was hurt. No details on why the tree suddenly fell. A necropsy has revealed new information about how a whale may have died. As we mentioned at the top of the newscast, the young whale calf washed up on Stinson Beach around 7 00 a. M. And died several hours later. San jose a little warmer at 79 degrees. But the key though is a much stronger delta breeze, 22, had gusts to 30 this morning. Concord at 16 miles an hour. Theres more of a breeze and also a bigger fog bank. Some of that played into our forecast but the low is still hanging around here. A lot of lightning strikes offshore. Everything has been moving out off northern Mendocino County and also lifting north. So we can say goodbye to the rain right now. Again, about another 36 hours well be in line. The cooler air will start to come in. I think the fog will get ramped up as that low moves back in. You can see some of the lightning strikes well offshore from us. The low is much stronger than anything we see in august. Looks more like a september pattern. The low tomorrow will come over the bay area. That could destabilize the atmosphere again. Things are a lot quieter today. A little more stable air. Still some fog, sun, its cooler. Mostly sunny, partly cloudy. Stronger breeze. I say partly cloudy because we could get buildups in the afternoon. Still hot, 90s but a lot of 70s and 80s and areas that are down a good 70 degrees. It looks tomorrow and into early thursday possibility of still some showers kind of a broad brush forecast until it clears the area. That will be on thursday. After that, back to normal. Maybe cooler to below normal as we head into the weekend. Next day and a half get ready. Okay. Try to get ready for labor day weekend. Yes. Its all coming up but it looks cooler.
