the ktvu channel 2 news at noon starts now. good afternoon. topping our news this noontime -- right now, berkeley police are still at the scene of a double shooting where one person was killed. police say the shooting happened around 8:45 this morning on sacramento street, south of russell street. the victims were rushed to the hospital where one of the men died. witnesses say there were two shooters. no arrests have been made. police do not yet have a motive for the shooting. >> this is quite unusual for this community so early in the morning, particularly concerning that there were community members going to school, going to work. as you can see, there are a number of people concerned about what happened here this morning. >> a number of people were outside at the time of the shooting. some of them say they saw the suspects run from the scene. a shooting at lake merritt left two men wounded, a retirement home hit by gunfire and force of a lockdown of a nearby school. police say someone opened fire from an suv just before 9:30 this morning in the 200 block of east 12th street. one of the bullets went through a window at the jail richard harris retirement home and almost hit two resides sitting in the lobby. dewey continuation school across the street was on lockdown status for about a half hour. police have no motive for the shooting and there's no arrests. a gas leak in martinez. county fire officials say a construction crew accidentally severed a gas line. it appears that happened with a backhoe. one witness said a four-block area is taped off and people appear to be self-investigating because of the smell of -- self- investigating because of the smell of gas in the area and the hissing sounds. a meeting just began about -- jut over an hour ago with some local officials in the area to discuss this problem and ways to prevent another disaster in the future. jade hernandez is live at jackie speier's office in san mateo and joins us with some of the results the meeting. >> reporter: good afternoon. this meeting wrapped up 5 minutes ago. for some, it was disturbing. for others it was informative. jackie speers called pg&e to meet with san mateo mayors to discuss the integrity of the pipeline in the county. they met at her office and this gave pg&e a chance to discuss the document they just filed with the cpuc. the document outlines what they have done to determine what went wrong when a 36-inch pipeline exploded and killed eight people in san bruno. they've done an aerial and ground review of the pipes. pg&e has not been able to use what is called pigging the lines which tests integrity. that was an issue brought up today. >> until we know why, it's hard to know what steps need to be taken to protect residents throughout this region from that happening again. >> reporter: congresswoman speier explained how the area was evaluated, each time coming up differently. $10million has been invested in the pig system. they haven't -- pg&e says the line to the explosion is not expected to be replaced for another few years. >> for us to have real confidence about the integrity of the pipeline supply san mateo county, that would really require pressure testing which can be done, it has not been done for the most part in san mateo county. >> reporter: congresswoman speier was not happy that pg&e suggested that the remote- controlled valves would not be effective in preventing another tragedy lie the explosion in san bruno. she says she plans to investigate that avenue. reporting live in san mateo this afternoon, jade hernandez, ktvu channel 2 news. >> all right. thank you, jade. arson investigators are looking for the cause of a fire that damaged a town home and several cars in hey war. the fire broke out at just about 4:00 a.m. on arf avenue near hesperian boulevard. a neighbor recorded this home video. the flames spread to a carport and destroyed three cars. twenty people were evacuated from their homes. residents say they woke up to the sound of an explosion. >> it was like a -- i thought it was a shot gun at first and then my car alarm started going off. i thought maybe it was some sort of earthquake or something. >> reporter: this apartment suffered some damage but all of the other families were allowed to return almost immediately. no one was injured. investigators say the fire may have started inside a vehicle or a nearby dumpster. republican senate candidate carly fiorina is in the hospital. according to her campaign, she was admitted this morning. fiorina, who is battling cancer, had reconstructive surgery this summer. her campaign issued a statement saying "this morning carly came down with an infection associated with the reconstructive surgery. as a result, she was admitted to the hospital to receive antibiotics to treat this infection." her doctors expect her to make a quick and number recovery. barbara boxeissued a statement saying "we wish carly fiorina a speedy recovery and hope she is able to return to her normal schedule soon." the annualwomen's conference is underway right now. as usual, it has a number of top celebrities. the event getting the most attention involves the current governor and those two candidates vying for his job. tara mori temperature -- tara moriarty has more from the newsroom. >> reporter: meg whitman and jerry brown will be taking the stage in long beach. today's gathering of the candidates and the current governor could turn out to be one of the most interesting of the campaign season. [ cheers and applause ] >> reporter: now, around 10:00 this morning, first lady michelle obama was greeted by a standing occasion before the crowd of 14,000 people who are mostly women. financial convict, orman, started the -- financial expert suzi orman, started off the conference. >> it is an issue that i believe should be on the agenda of every woman's conference right up there with equal pay, right up there with work family balance. right up there with breaking the glass ceiling. >> maria shriver told the audience that this is a day where women voters can get information before the election on tuesday. she says women tell her they don't care about party and gender as much as they do about the issues. >> i don't care if they are a man, a woman, a democrat, a republican, i want to know that they get it. i want to know that they will get something done. that's how i want to use my vote. >> one of the most contentious races in the country -- the race for governor. governor schwarzenegger will host a session featuring meg whitman and jerry brown, the two candidates running for his job. now, both have tried to distance themselves from the governor. it may get a little uncomfortable. that should happen around 2:00 this afternoon. back to you. >> thank you, tara. a nurse is recovering this afternoon after being lit with a lamp by an inmate. the contra costa county sheriff's office said the nurse was attacked and said aaron nye guard was being -- nygard was being processed into the system when he had a seizure. the sheriff's office said he admitted to faking the seizure because he did not want to be in the room where he was held. after more than three days of deliberation, a jury this morning found three men guilty of first-degree murder in a 2008 los gatos love triangle murder for hire case. mark achille owned the spot called mountain charlie saloon. paul garcia, miguel and one other man were charged in connection with his shooting death. sentencing for two men is set for the 9th. a statewide amber alert was issued for a 13-year-old girl. the family of her reported her missing from their victor terville home on sunday. she's white, 5'7", 135 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. investigators say she ran off with this man, they say this man is wanted for a 2009 sex crime with a minor and befriended him on the internet. the girl's father posted an emotional message on youtube. >> have you to come home. turn around and come home. you have many options to choose from. please. all of your friends and family are worried sick about you. >> investigators say lopez may be driving a 1973 chevy van that's primer gray and white with the california license plate 2 ciw 894. the white house is stepping up pressure on schools around the station to stop bullying. an unwelcome surprise for owners of a car in the east bay. this is what was found. we're still wondering if rain will impact any of the world series in the bay area. mark tamayo will let us know. also -- >> reporter: and what the giants will be doing here at at&t park when the votes open here tomorrow for the first world series game. man: empty nest?
