However car burglaries are up 31 . And joining us now is the chief. Some success that you are having. How do you feel things are going . How would you rate yourself . Over all we are making good progress. We focused on violent crime. So we have see the reductions in the murders and nonfatal shootings and robberies. Those are the crimes we are focused on the most. Less success with property crimes. Lets talk for a second about the may day protests. They were peaceful during the day but then the sun went down and that is when the damage went on. After work i looked at the cars that were damaged. I counted 60 cars that were damaged. Business owners were angry. They said the police were standing by watching this happen. Why is it that the police couldnt have done something there to stop the vandalism. I dont think that definitely frustrating. I empathize with the businesses that were effected by it. I dont think you have a situation where the cops were standing by. The crowd got spread out and when that happens it is more difficult for the officers to get into position to make arrests. We made some arrests for vandalism, luting. But when you have that many people, it is a challenge. Sometimes when you have a bully you have to hit back so the bully knows not going to happen anymore. You can protest but as soon as crosses the line we will stop it. I talked to a couple Business Owners and they said it feels like the protesters come to oakland, they know they can get away with it and the police are dammed if they do, dammed if they dont and if they do something the protesters will sue the city. How would you respond to that . The key is that it is appropriate for us to make arrests for people engaging in vandalism. The problem is, they hide in larger groups of people that are peaceful. You have to remove those people from the crowd. Sometimes it involves using force. Just because somebody is out there doesnt mean they are encaged in the behavior. Do you think the perception of oakland is changing. I live in oakland. It feels to me like oakland, situation here, is getting better. My wife is from the east coast, when she tells people she lives in oakland, they say isnt that where all the killings are. It will take time to change because the reputation is long built up. I go to a lot of community meetings, i hear that people say, you know what, we notice the difference in the crime and in the cops. And they believe they are having better relationships and that is our strategy. I think we are making a difference. The relationship between Police Officers and the community, right now with all the things going on, there are real questions about the relations between police and the community. What do you do to change that . I know i have asked people what would it take for you to trust the police and some of the responses said there is nothing they can do, i will never ever trust the police. Right. Some people we will never win over but most people want to have a Good Relationship with the police. We have to be worthy of that trust. A lot of theeft we have done the effort we have done, trying to be different, trying to be focused in how we do our enforcement, and not trying to catch [ indiscernible ] we have had reductions in complaints while arrests has gone up and complaints gone down. You have an event tomorrow . Our open house. A great event.
