The Department Says the crash in no way effected the call, the outcome of the call officer Michael Johnson was responding to. Reporter thats right. We want to make it clear the system crash after the shooting. It froze up because of the amount of officers working the suspect that night. They call it an acceptable and have a plan in place. Reporter as soon as the San Jose Police officers start their shift they log into the Computer System where they are able to get the latest information on police calls. Tuesday night, within an hour after officers responded to the Fatal Shooting of officer Michael Johnson it went down. They are frustrated with the computers not working in their cars. It is a critical piece of safety equipment. Reporter he couldnt send messages to officers and the mapping system went dead and he couldnt see other calls coming in. That night a stabbing occurred down the street, compromising officer safety. Unsatisfactory for us to have a problem. We are looking at ways, working on rectifying the problems. Reporter ktvu obtained a memo detailing safety concerns. The Systems Wireless service and the communication speed was slow. Slowing down officers getting into the field. They acknowledged issues saying the technology outpaced the hardware. We dont get information to officers as quickly as we would like to. It is a safety issue. They are looking into upgrading the Technology Ask replace leg of the computers in the cars by replacing all of the computers in the cars by next year. His wife is grateful he avoided a harsher punishment. Heshes had two little girls he has two little girls. Reporter before the ruling the judge received 20 letters of support for Joseph Martin but she recognized the damage he caused to the victim. Many families left disappointed. Not happy about the amount of time. Happy he wont be able to victimize children anymore. And he will be a registered registered sex offender. Punishment of 25 to life in this case does not constitute cruel and unusual punishment. Harsh. But what Joseph Martin did was harsh. He was convicted of putting his hands down boys shirts and rubbing their chests. Prosecutors say it was on the low end but they were prompted by sexual intent. I am really proud of all the boys that came forward. I will always stand by my husband and defend him. His wife says the family will have to talk about whether or not they want ofile an appeal.
