It could be of what could come if the contracts arent resolved. This stems from talks on a contract that expired in april. A new contract is what they are working on. Instead 8 mechanics will picket tomorrow in front of district headquarters joined by 50 other union workers. Our members are aware of the potential negative impact a strike could have on commuters. The suspect stole jewelry and the lengths they went to steal it has the victim in disbelief. Reporter quiet and safe is what one san jose woman describes her home. That is until friday. I feel afraid. Every time when somebody knock on the door i feel afraid. The victim asked not to be identified. Around 10 30 a. M. Friday morning she ran an errand. When she got out of the store she saw her tires slashed. Then a call from her husband. Go home. Somebody entered the home. Reporter police found the suspects car. Two men are in custody. The victim recognized them as the ones parked next to her at the store. At this east bay mud dispatch center they are fielding more calls than ever about water waste and water leaks. 2 investigates obtained a list of all 3,112 reports of leak through july this year. One of them you would see water in the middle of the street down the cracks. Reporter in front of his house in berkeley. It was a nightmare. We lost sleep over this. Leak from a pipe under his street flooded his basement. Cleaning up the water and the mold cost him 20,000. East bay mud confirmed a series of leaks. One in march took 67 dize fix. More waters lost than he could ever try to conserve. From the amount of water that was coming in it would take weeks for us to use that much water in our home. They settled with him for 15,000 and says it is doing additional testing in the area now. So far this year they say it fixed its most priority 5 leaks in less than one day 97 of the time. P4 in a week or less 87 of the time. On a 4,000mile system it is a never ending job. Reporter do you feel pressure to get the leaks fixed faster . There is an awareness of that expectation. Reporter we asked san jose water for a record of all of its leaks this year when neighbors say leak there was allowed to flow for a month. I feel like i am doing my job. I think they should do their job. I mean, that is it. The private utility declined to provide a list but says its loss is less than 7 . The San Francisco Public Utilities commission provided a list of 500 water leaks and breaks through july but no information about how long it took to respond. For many the challenge is maintaining an aging system of pipes that is only getting older but a long term fix wont be cheap. They replace about 10 miles of pipe a year at 2 million a mile. They decided not to close sea bright beach but they have stepped up patrols and are advising visitors not to go in the water. Kind of surprised.
