At this point we know its a two alarm fire. The number one priority is saving people inside, number two of course is saving the structure itself. If we can go back to those pictures that viewers sent us. This fire was first called in at about 4 45. Just about 15 minutes ago. It shows you the quick work that firefighters made of this fire. Look at that. That thick black smoke. The flames, i dont know if that building is under construction or not. I cant tell from that picture. Its only been 15 minutes or so since weve been fighting this fire. As we go back to the live picture. You can see it looks as though they pretty much have that fire just about out. Based on the lack of smoke and the fact that its white smoke. At this point well get some answers here because we have mindy talmage. Are you with us and what can you tell us about the fire . This is now a two alarm fire. I dont have an exact address but its dolores and 14th in the castro. Its a pretty large dust fire. Got into a penthouse, up into the attic. We have crews in the building surrounding that. Making sure theres no one in the building. They do have water on the fire. And it appears theyre going to be getting it under control pretty quickly now. Can you tell us, is it a condo building, apartments. Are there people inside, were there evacuations. I know it is a six Story Building with a penthouse on the top. Im not sure if there was anybody home at the time. We definitely received calls from buildings surrounding. There are no injuries reported. Have you evacuated any of the near by buildings or because you got this fire out so quickly that was not necessary . Generally with a fire that size we would evacuate the surrounding building, just to make room for the crews there and check the buildings as well. Is it safe to say that for the most part this fire is out . I would say theyve got a very good handle on it right now. There are no reported injuries so thats always good news. The woman who live there is says she rounded up her children and got them all out through the thick smoke. We lost everything. I have a 6 weekold. I have seven children. We have nothing anymore. I mean nothing, nothing. We dont even have shoes on our feet. We lost everything. But like i said before im glad we have one another. Reporter fire Officials Say the fire started in the garage. At this point the cause is under investigation but it does not appear to be suspicious. New at 5 00, voting season began today in the south bay. Now in normal years five southbound reservoirs would open for the boating season but the drought has pretty much ended those plans. However, plan of the season has been salvaged. Robert handa joins us from the areas largest reservoir which did open in a some what surprising way. Reporter it was a very unexpected turn of events. Anderson reservoir was going to remain closed. But when supplies were pumped in, officials determined that the water was high enough for people to have some fun. Boaters know the recreational users got a break. Anderson and morgan hill was not supposed to be available when boating season opened today because of the drought. Officials had planned to open just one facility, collateral reservoir. But when the Water District began pumping in federal water to make sure the south bay had enough drinking walter this summer it raised andersons level enough the county Parks Department decided to open up the 7mile lake for at least part of the season. Everybody is really happy to be here. Were really excited to open up the reservoir finally after many months of being closed we finally opened. Were very, very very excited about that. Only if the person putting up the property for rent meets requirements. Right now such rentals are banned in the city. Under the proposed legislation the city would impose strict laws of people who want to rent out their homes at a short term. They would be required to register with the city to be able to rent a short term. The city would require that a resident should be able to demonstrate long term residence. A person could only rent out their apartment short term if they are a permanent San Francisco resident and live in that apartment for at least nine months out of the year. The person putting up the place for rent would also be required to have liability insurance. Let me be clear, under our legislation, we are not going to allow second homes or vacation homes to be rented short term by owners nor allow tenants to use multiple leases for side temporary lease. Neighbors are worried that the homes would end up being used like a de facto hotel. We want to use this opportunity to create a facility thats coupled with access to permanent housing. Reporter homeless advocates attended todays meeting to offer ideas for the replacement of the sunny vale armory. It served people in the northern part of the county with 125 beds and is now set for demolition to make way for low income housing. Todays vote is a commitment to relocate that shelter.
