Just two days and counting until the threat of another bart strike becomes real. Bart and its workers were back at the bargaining table today but still no sign of a deal. The lack of progress is worrying employers in the area that need their employees on the job. Tom has the latest in the developments. Reporter lets put it this way. Traditional courtesy notices of the strike notwithstanding, a strike could come any time from friday on. The Bay Area Council of the regions largest employees are asking its members and business groups to be super flexible in the event of a bart strike with telecommuting, days off and other ways to keep employees off the roads. This is an emergency situation. Its very possible that within a couple of days, were going to have a bart strike. Reporter amy worth, mayor and chair of the Transportation Commission says that the economic damage from a strike will dwarf this summers 73 million a day hit. We expect the cost will be even higher this fall in the event of a strike because people are back to work and theyre back to school. So there are many more people commuting. This only addresses about 10 of the demand that is on bart each day. Reporter a survey of bart riders guarantees grid lock. Of those bart riders, over 50 said they would switch from bart to their cars. Reporter and its not just the commute. We have to think also about what happens all day long. The trucks that have to deliver the foods and the groceries, the Utility Companies that have to continue to maintain their routes. All of the other things that have to go on in our lives. Reporter tourism workers will suffer greatly in terms of how they have serve. Visitors how they are transported from the airport to the bay area. A strike is unacceptable to Public Safety and critical transportation infrastructure. Trains were back up and running four and a half days later after the unions agreed to send members barometer being to work while the negotiations continued. That was over a holiday weekend. Police say the victim was shot in the leg at about 1 30 this afternoon while on a bus near fontaine street. The details are still sketchy and there are conflicting reports that the gunshot wound may have been selfinflicted. The victim was brought to a hospital. No word on his condition. Authorities say there were about 12 people on the bus at the time of the shooting and no one else was hurt. You may recall last month, two people were injured when gunfire broke out on a bus also in oakland. Continuing coverage now on the partial federal Government Shutdown. As we take a live look at capitol hill. The shutdown is now in its eighth day. Today, new pressure from president obama to get something done. Julie haner is in the news room with more. Reporter the president and congressional leaders continue to dig in. President obama held an hour long press Conference Today at the white house. He said he will negotiate with republicans after congress reopens the government and raises the debt ceiling. But he says it must be done with no strings attached. The greatest nation on earth shouldnt have to get permission from a few irresponsible members of Congress Every couple months just to keep the government open or prevent an economic catastrophe. Lets pay our bills and end the shutdown. The president phoned john boehner this morning but they remain at odds. Boehner hopes to meet with leaders and is demanding another conversation with the president. Threatening isnt about me or republicans. Its about saving the future for our kids and grandkids. The only way that will happen is to have a conversation. Lawmakers have until thursday of next week to raise the debt ceiling to avoid the government going into default. Sooner or later we will raise the debt limit. How do we get there . If there is anybody that disagrees were not going to reach that point, i would like to hear from them. News chopper 2 shows us the charred remains of a lumber yard and Historic Buildings dating back to the 1800s. When crews arrived to towering flames, they discovered there were no fire hydrants nearby. It happened in the small town of coyote in santa clara county. Ann has the latest on what firefighters faced. Reporter firefighters say this could have been much worse. There was a limited supply of water and a seemingly unlimited amount of fuel for the fire. Neighbors in coyote recorded this cell phone video before the fire trucks arrived. You have to have 50, 60foot flames. Reporter crews had their work cut out for them. There are no fire hydrants there. There is a poor water supply system in this area. But we know that. Reporter so they brought in water tenders and got to work. On one side is the lumber yard. On the other, three Historic Buildings according to their owner fran seen. This was built in 1870. And the building down there is built in 1868. Reporter one had been a train depot, the other a feed company and the last a bunkhouse for railroad workers. Firefighters were able to save all by the bunkhouse. When i seen it an hour ago, it was there. And i thought they were able to save it. They said that only the roof had caught on fire but they took it completely down. Reporter two more buildings at the lumber yard burn but the lumber amazingly did not. I have a lot of stuff left, just me office is gone. I cant thank them enough. They saved this place. You saved this place. Thank you. Youre welcome. Reporter the cause of the fire is under investigation. Coincidentially there was another fire at this same spot last year. Ann ruben, ktvu news. Pg e has been ordered to keep this pipeline out of service until the safety is verified. The utilities investigation will see if there is any danger posed by the pipeline. City leaders cited internal e mails from a employee that was concerned that it was unsafe and could cause an explosion like the deadly san bruno blast three years ago. Petaluma police and fbi agents have been on the scene of a home where they discovered explosive devices. A man was possibly in possession of a firearm on quarry street. Investigators took him into custody. Incompetent side the home they found a total of four devices with explosives inside of them. They were similar to pipe bombs. Several homes in the were evacuated but the residents have now been able to return. Investigators say a childs parents brought the baby to San Francisco General Hospital at about 12 30 this morning and he was pronounced just a short time later. Investigators say the medical examiner could not confirm that the infant died of Natural Causes and contacted police. The parents car was towed from the hospital. Police are also investigating the familys home on monterey boulevard in the glenn park neighborhood. When a young child or infant passes away, it raises red flags. So the medical examiner was just doing their part. And we are doing our Due Diligence to make sure theres no criminal activity that occurred. Police say theyre also interviewing the babys parents and others that have recently come in contact with the child. More people have been arrested in connection with the black market Drug Trafficking website silk road. The mastermind was arrested last week at a San Francisco library. Authorities have arrested eight more people in britain, sweden and washington state. More arrestsare coming. The fbi says that silk road brokered more than a billion dollars in sales before agents arrested the mastermind and shut down the website. Lets take our first look at the weather. So far 278 reported cases in 18 states with most of the illnesses happening here in california. No deaths have been linked to the outbreak. Actor tom hanks has just revealed he is living with type two diabetes. He grew up in the bay area. A man who lived at a souths bay Home Day Care center arrested, accused of sexually abusing children there. Police are urging parents to have what could be a difficult talk with their own children. The arrest came as a surprise to at least one parent who was dropping off his daughter at the Home Day Care center around lunchtime. We get more from carrie lu. Reporter we confirmed with the state this afternoon that the facility has a valid license but an investigation is underway. The man arrested is related to the owner who didnter search warrant the door for us. But there is a note out front saying no comment. Oh, my god. What is this. Reporter Juan Gonzales had no idea anything was amiss when he dropped off his daughter at the home. He has been happy with the facility for the last three years. Its really good. Its really good. She loves the kids. She loves all of the parents. Its really mine. But im in shock. Im in shock. Reporter investigators say jose who lived at the home was arrested last week after a parent came forward with allegations of inappropriate touching. Investigators say at least two children were abused. The children in this case are 5 to 8 years old. Theyre Elementary School age children. And so the touching that was made was a sexual type of touching. Reporter neighbors tell us the 68yearold was friendly and they sometimes saw him walking with the children to the park. He is a good man. I dont know what happened inside. Reporter police want to hear from any parent worried that their child might be a victim. We obtained inspection reports from the last few years from the state. The most significant deficiency cited was about a dog that barked and jumped on people when they arrived. We are working to confirm from the state if the license is now at risk. Live from sunnyville, ktvu channel 2 news. Police a 66yearold williams was arrested last friday after a parent said that williams had touched a student inappropriately. He was released after being cited on three counts of molesting or annoying a child under the age of 18. Additional staff and councillors have been on campus to, quote, provide support to students and staff. The district says that williams is on paid leave but cannot be placed on unpaid leave until he is arraigned. He will appear in court november 1st. Investigators say there could be other victims as well. A rude awakening today for residents of a san jose apartment building. A driver fella sleep at the wheel and crashed into three parked cars and two poles and then slammed into the apartment building. It happened this morning. The truck hit a gas meter but pg e says that it didnt cause a list. The driver was interviewed by police but not arrested. Police have questions for an owner of a home found on fire near twin peaks reservoir. The bmw was discovered around 4 00 this morning. Police searched the area thinking that somebody could have been ejected from the car and injured. They later tracked down the owner but havent been able to question him left. A law school is charged after hitting a man in oakland with her car. She has been charged with assault with a Deadly Weapon and hit and run. Police say me and a friend confronted a group of taggers at the Library Early saturday morning. The taggers allegedly pushed them and grabbed his cell phone. She then got into her car and drove into 25yearold james rhoda who was not part of the group. She kept going but was stopped by witnesses ai few blocks away. San francisco has officially ended a practice that facilitates the deportation of undocumented immigrants arrested for crimes. The mayor signed the due process for all ordinance this afternoon. Last week the board of supervisors voted unanimously to prevent the police and sheriffs departments from detaining undocumented immigrants up to 48 hours past their release dates. That extra time helps immigration agents take custody of an individual for possible deportation. Its the fifth amendment of our constitution and here in San Francisco we uphold that and values should drive the policies. We have done that in this case clearly. The law will take effect in 30 days. It excluding violent offenders in some cases. Despite technical difficulties, the Health Exchange says more than 16,000 applications have now been completed, thousands more have been started. Officials say the covercalifornia website has had more than 987,000 unique users. The help centers have received more than 59,000 phone calls. An off Duty New York Police detective has been arrested in connection with this videotaped attack of an suv who had the a motorcyclist. He will face riot and criminal mischief charges. There is another video that contradicts his story that he didnt participate and drove away to avoid blowing his cover. Four bikershave now been charged in the case. A chemist has been ordered to stand trial on weapons and explosive charges. David snyder is accused of setting off an explosion back in january at his apartment complex. He was injured by the blast and dozens of people have to evacuate their homes. He was in possession of chemicals which are ingredients found in blasting caps and c4 explosives. He is free on 2 million bail and expected to enter a plea next month. The pilots of the deadly flight 214 are reportedly blaming the crash on equipment failure. They have told investigators that a problem with the planes speed control system malfunctioned. So far the ntsb has not found any mechanical problems with the plane. Vallejo police are investigating the shooting of a motel clerk that happened early this morning. The shooting happened at about 2 00 this morning at the roadway in along interstate 80. The female clerk was shot in her upper body. Its believed she will survive. At this point police dont know what the motive was. Protesters camped out on the sidewalks of albany after being told that the homeless will be evicted from a waterfront park. People set up camp last night. Theyre fighting the citys decision to enforce no camping laws at a park known as the albany bulb. If they want to kick out the Homeless People from where they told them they could live for years, they should have other places to have them live. This is an ongoing situation where were trying to find caring and do passionate solutions for. City leaders are looking to relocate the homeless with the berkeley housing project. Los angeles is looking to San Francisco for help in toughening some of its earthquake standards when it comes to the soft story buildings. The bottom floors of those buildings are susceptible to collapse during an earthquake. Los angeles is considering legislation similar to that passed in San Francisco last spring. It requires owners of soft story apartments to make structural make the structures safer. L. A.
