the bay but not everyone is ready to welcome the basketball team to town. an investigation has term had the a fast moving house fire in livermore was not the result of arson. the flames destroyed the home near shetland and arabia road last night. firefighters don't know the exact cause yet but they say the fire probably started in the garage. all members of the family escaped but a woman was hospitalized for smoke inhalation and minor burns. cell phone video from a neighbor shows how high the flames got last night. >> it was just, huge orange and yellow it lit up the whole sky and there was popping, banging noises like you could hear the water heater explode. >> reporter: many investigators worked on the case before ruling out arson. a house fire in martinez is also being investigated. flames badly damaged the building on eighth street just before midnight. the damage is estimated at $60,000. officials say the house is supposed to be empty but squatters have been known to break into it. the source of a strange odor aboard a southwest airlines plane out of oakland remain as mystery tonight. the southwest plane was about 16 minutes out of its flight around 7:30 this morning when a flight attendant complained of an unusual smell in the cabin and said she felt light headed. the plane returned to oakland where the flight attendant was taken to the hospital. passengers took another flight to burbank. southwest airlines told us their crews checked the plane and found no problems then put it back into service. we have new information now on a bay area construction workers who was killed in the collapse of a trench. today cal osha sited u.s. sino for safety violations. the agency says led to the workers death. 37-year-old raul zapata died when an excavation well fell on him. three days earlier, city leaders had ordered sino to stop work at that site because the ground was unstable. cal-osha said the company knowingly put workers at risk. the agency also fined u.s. sino also $170,000. while there are no red flag warnings in effect right now, south bay park officials aren't taking any chances when it comes to fire. ktv ux's matt keller is near the alan rock park which has been shut down, matt -- >> reporter: i spoke to firefighters in just the past half hour and they told me so that are no announcement has -- me so far no announcement has been made about whether alan rock park will remain closed for tomorrow. but so far the breezy conditions forced many people to change their plans. >> reporter: they came by car, bicycle and on her husband's bail hearing. a judge revoked zimmerman's bail after ruling both zimmerman and his wife had lied about their finances. mrs.zimmerman was arrested today and posted $1,000 bail and was released. new data finds more teenagers are not looking for jobs this summer. according to the labor department, seven in 10 teens are jobless this summer. it may not have to do with a lack of jobs. it could be due to a cultural shift. more 16 to 19-year-olds are spending summer months in school, at music or learning camps or in other activities geared for college. on wall street today the dow fire that's burning in san francisco's portola neighborhood. news chopper 2 is live over the 1200 block of san bruno avenue. smoke is still rising from that structure. construction workers were welding parts of the sprinkler system when they sparked a hole in a gas line. that set off a fire that burned a worker in the face. crews have been fighting the fire for about 90 minutes now. one firefighters as you can see on this video was brought out of the building after apparently suffering some kind of injury. accounts of sexual abuse in the trial of jerry sandusky. one man spoke as a victim the other a witness. this was day two of jerry sandusky's trial as the 68-year- old is facing charges he molested 10 boys over a 15 year period. today a second alleged child sex abuse victim took the stand while choking back tears, the man now 18 years old described being kissed and fondled by sandusky and said sandusky engaged him in oral sex during many sleep overs in the basement of sandusky's home. sandusky has denied the charges. today he did not react to the accounts and looked straight up. >> the number of times he or she has to tell his or her story and how painful each account is. >> also today boxes and boxes of evidence brought into court. prosecutors allege in new court document that is a penn state administrator kept a file about sandusky's alleged activities for years. if convicted sandusky could spend the rest of his life behind bars. finally, mike mccreary testified he saw a sexual encounter between sandusky and what appeared to be a 10 to 12- year-old boy in the school shower. he said it was quote, more than my brain could handle. mccreary then said he went to the head football coach joe paterno's house the next day and described the scene he saw in the shower. but did not describe the act in detail out of respect for the coach and his own embarrassment. in closing argumenting today, clemens' attorney called the trainer a liar. the jury heard from 46 witnesses in the nine week long trial. clemens did not testify. the woman who spent 16 years on the run with former mobster bulger will be spending the next few years behind bars. a judge in boston today sentenced katherine greg to eight years in prison. bulger's long time girlfriend had pled guilty to charges of conspiracy to house a criminal. the couple was arrested last june in santa monica. john brison had difficult delivering a commencement address thursday two days before two separate car accidents. the l.a. time reports some students and parents from pasadena's polytechnic school says brison slurred his words during a speech. the commerce department says brison suffered a seizure. a test of his breath came up negative for alcohol. barbara boxer today slammed several car rental companies for failing to take a safety pledge. senator boxer said today just one car rental agency, hertz agreed to take the pledge. they asked the car rental companies to promise not to rent or sell any cars that are under a safety recall until they've been repaired. a woman who appeared with senator boxer today says that pledge might have saved her daughter's life. the two young santa cruz women died when a recalled enterprise rental they were driving caught fire and crashed. >> i do believe my daughters would still be here. but they aren't and i don't want any more rachel and jackies to lose their lives. >> they plan to reintroduce the bill in a few weeks. police are warning of a rash of thefts in catalytic converters. a third theft reported the following day happened on high street. older model toyotas are being targeted because their catalytic converters are easily removed. lloyd lacuesta was honored by the mayor. mayor reed and the santa cruz council was honored for his 35 years reporting news in the south bay. one councilwoman said it's going to be strange to watch ktvu without lloyd's reports. after spending more than half his life here, lloyd says he plans martin to find out what's going on with the weather. >> temperatures did trend down a little bit outside. today pretty warm in some cases hot but it was cooler by 5 degrees in most locations. why? the fog is back. we take a look at live storm tracker 2. if you're out in the avenues or pacifica or granada. there it is, not just for tonight but for tomorrow. our forecast lows for tonight. the fog has got a big west wind behind it. so we're seeing west wind behind it. i have gusts to 35 miles per hour. that's transporting a lot of cool air inland. we did the story on fire danger in alum park in south bay this helps a lot when you bring moisture into the equation. it was gone for a while. but when you increased the on shore wind you increased the moisture and any firefighters will tell you that's what you need. humidity is coming up. 49 at pacifica, it'll be foggy tomorrow when you wake up in pacifica. san mateo, san francisco, san rafael, oakland, alameda, fog is not going to get over the bill hills out toward livermore valley but the fog will get into a lot of the close inland bay areas. low pressure to the north. that's the key for injecting the fog into the gate through san bruno gap, it brings temperatures at the coast in the 50s tomorrow. around the bay mild. so it's not going to be as hot tomorrow. lots of mid-70s around the bay tomorrow. inland instead of 90s we're looking at 80s, mid-80s and upper 80s as you head into your wednesday forecast. fog is back. in a way it's nice to see it because it doesn't take fire danger off the table but it helps a lot. the winds now are going this way. and that's why the isotherm map shows cool moist air. it shows the cooler air being pushed into fremont into san rafael north into the napa area. we still have heat in the inland bay valleys. there's still 90s out toward fairfield, there's still 90s out toward vacaville and davis. the weather story is a cooling trend but it does not last for a long time. i'll let unload. construction could soon begin on a contested target store in san rafael. the store will be located on shoreline. the city is reviewing target's application and construction could begin as soon as september. the san rafael city council approved the store last year. opponents criticized target saying it pays low wages and the store would hurt local businesses and cause traffic in the area. americans deserve an attorney general who will be honest with them, they deserve an attorney general who will uphold the basic standards and accountability. you've proven time and time again sadly that you're unwilling to do so. >> reporter: senate republicans today slammed eric holder they called for a special prosecutor to investigate recent intelligence leaks and they accuse holder which let higher regard was briefed on these kind of tactics in an operation called wide receiver and did nothing to stop them. nothing. >> reporter: attorney general holder was referring to a bush administration drug operation. actress anne rutherford has died. many know her for the small but memorable role of scarlet ohara's little sister. she also played nikki rooney's girlfriend. rutherford had been in declining health. rutherford was 94. we now have new information on that fire burning in san francisco on the line right now is joe malaka from pg & e. joe, we understand this fire on san bruno avenue next to highway 101 in the city's portola neighborhood involved some type of gas line, what do you know about that? >> it appear that is a third party contractor had blocked a gas line late this afternoon. we do have crews on-site they're working as quickly and safely as possible to bring that gas line under control and to squeeze that gas line off. and right now our thoughts and prayers go out to the contractors who were hurt in this incident. >> was the gas line to this building or a gas line that feeds other buildings along that street? >> official reports is that it is a service line that it's a gas line that services this building. however crews have not been able to verify at first because the gas line ignited near the gas meter in this building. it appears the contractors may have been working on that gas line near the meter or near the meter. and somehow affected the gas line as i said, our thoughts and players go out to those folks who are injured, this shows the extreme caution that folks should use around working on gas lines. >> reporter: this fire has been burning for about two hours now, is that gas line still open and what's involved to try to get it shut off? >> because of the location it wasn't possible to just shut that fire off with a valve because the fire was near the meter. in other words near the meter that served that gas that building. and so that's where that gas valve is located. so what crews had to do was excavate right upstream if you will of the gas line, and squeeze the gas leak off. that gas leak should be squeezed off any min now, our crews have been working as quickly and safely as they can to get the gas closed off. we've been working very closely with the fire department to make sure this scene is secure and as safe as possible. >> joe, with pg &g who's been fighting the fire in san francisco's portola district. we have a ktvu crew that's just arriving on the scene, we will have a live report coming up in just a few minutes on ktvu channel 2 news at 5:00. the subway system is supposed to free up traffic object surface. the question is, how much is it going to be held up while it's been built? and san francisco takes the first step toward bringing the warriors to town. but not everyone is ready for the team to come to town. happening now, a fire still burning in san francisco's portola district and we have ktvu's david stevenson on the scene now. >> reporter: this fire was reported at about 3:37 to the fire department and as you can see it's still an active scene. you see an ambulance backing down the street. they are headed to wayland avenue. that's where you see that fire truck ladder extended over the scene of the fire. let's go back to video we shot earlier this afternoon from news chopper 2. you can see what the scene looked like. this fire was reported at 3:37. that's when fire department tells us a worker with a construction crew working in front of a house a welder apparently ruptured a gas line. that worker was sent to the hospital in life threatening conditions, and that fire broke out sending plumes of smoke over this block. it forced the evacuation of that home and dental officer. people are on the street watching what's going on at this hour. one firefighters was treated for heat exhaustion. at this point we understand based on our conversations with pg & e spokesman that pg & e is still working to shut down that gas main and ensure this will be a safe site for people to return to their normal business now. but right now you can see it's still a very active scene. everyone though the smoke has dissipated at this hour. pg & e has at least two crews on the site right now. more ambulance and fire trucks are arriving at the scene to try to get this situation under control so folks can get back to -- normalcy. a firefighter was sent to the hospital and being treated at this hour. for now reporting from san francisco, david stevenson, ktvu news. principal work on what will become numi's newest and most controversial project will begin today. ktvu's consumer editor tom vacar joins us from the beginning of the big project there on fourth and harrison. >> reporter: take a look, as big as this shovel is, much larger ones will move into this space next week to remove massive amounts of earth and ground 100 feet down. these crews are preparing an area to prepare huge cranes to dig a giant hole. >> which will allow us to put the boring machines in and tunnel through. we'll be using two of them to create both tunnels going both directions. >> reporter: there will be a station here at fourth and fulsome. that's going to be bad news for this 76 which will actually be a station but it'll be great news for masconi center, right over here. in the union square area, a lot of utility relocation work is being done for the station to be carved out here. the union station is currently the end of the line. >> the tunnel is being bored to north beach for the possibility of a future north beach station. >> reporter: there will be closures and detours from time to time. but will all this snarl traffic upset business like caltrans did for the b.a.r.t. tunnels. >> there can be vehicle traffic over while they are constructing under ground. >> reporter: amazingly the controversial $1.6 billion tunnel is not yet fully funded lacking almost a billion of that from uncle sam. >> the federal government gave us approval to move forward construction now. that gives us as a sign that the money is on its way. >> reporter: the tunneling will take two years. the finished system won't open for seven. tom vacar, ktvu news. after 13 months of digging a new water tunnel has reached a milestone in the east bay. the tunnel stretches 3-1/2 miles from the sonol valley to fremont. part of a multi million dollars project to make seismic upgrades. the old tunnel was built back in the 1920s and is seismically unsound. five platforms known as travelers are being made by a southern california company. they will be suspended from tracks beneath the bridge workers will use them to conduct bridge inspections, repairs, and painting operationals after the bridge -- operations after the bridge opens next year. there are major upgrades for caltrain. the project that could pump money into the local economy and create hundreds of jobs. verizon will allow customers to bundle several devices into one plan. under verizon's share everything plan, customers will pay a device. the changes are set to take effect january 28th. while oakland and the east bay mourn the potential loss of the warriors to san francisco, not everyone in the city is thrilled with the idea of the team moving across the bay. ktvu's david stevenson has the story where residents don't want a new arena as a neighbor. >> reporter: the announcement took ma san franciscans by surprise. >> we intend to build the most amazing arena in the country. >> reporter: in time for the 2017 season, it's welcomed news for neighboring business. >> we're excited that this thing came out of nowhere. we like the idea of them coming in. >> reporter: but as city supervisors today held the first hearing on the project, some san franciscans are not as excited. >> we don't want that in this area. >> reporter: residents here are irritated that they weren't consulted about pollution, congestion and crime concerns before the arena announcement. >> we want the warriors in san francisco, we welcome them with open arms, but we do have really grave concerns about putting an arena on 30-32. >> there will be lots of open space, lots of greenery and lots of access to the water. >> reporter: the team is still hammering out a lease agreement with the san francisco port. warriors spokesman t.j. johnson says the team also has to do a lot of outreach. >> we know we have to go out to talk to people that live in the neighborhood and really the whole city and we're going to do that. >> reporter: an actual design of the arena is still a ways off. the team must go through the specks before it can hire an architect then an environmental impact study rock state park was among 70 parks slated for closure due to budget cuts, but the los altos based found says that to provide $60,000 to keep the park from closing it doors. firefighters in colorado and in new mexico say they are making progress toward containing two large wildfires that have forced hundreds of people from their homes. the colorado fires burned more than 6,800 square miles. it's blamed for one death. a woman. the fire is about 5% contained today. fire officials have lifted evacuation orders for some people but have warned others to be ready to leave. the little bear fire has burned 68 fires. lightning started the fire. the fire is now reported to be about 30% contained. this next story is certainly not something you see every day. a funnel cloud over the canals of venice italy. you can see it in the massive cloud over the town's canal. the funnel clouds became a tornado. damaged roofs, smashed small sailboats into the port and uprooted dozens of trees but besides all that damage no one was hurt. let's go now to bill martin and see if the fog is making a return. >> the fog is doing what it's supposed to do. it's sending sleeping temperatures into a very comfortable temp. we're doing this, kind of north- northeast kind of deal. look what the winds are doing now. see these white arrows, those winds are coming out of the northwest, a little west as well. that's transporting all this moisture cool fog into your neighborhood. it's foggy right now at half- moon bay. it's cooling as well. the fog is back and it'll be back in earnest tomorrow morning. it'll have a little bit of a push form as we saw the fog across the fremont. cooling down. that's good news. we did fire weather stories. this will kind of help that out a little bit. tomorrow morning the fog as
