bay bridge. two days into the holiday weekend closure of the upper deck and caltrans said there is a possibility it could reopen ahead of schedule. officials are giving updates on that work that's taking place. let's go head now and listen to caltrans spokesman. >> we want to thank our partners including bart, ac transit, muni, alameda, golden gate and vallejo ferry, west cat, amtrak, greyhound, oakland, the city and county of san francisco, and the entire bay area for working with us on that. i read that long list to give you an idea of how many agencies and groups had to get together to do this. we also want to thank mcm for putting together a great team and finishing their work early. we want to ask greg allen to come up and say a couple words. greg, allen, allen. i. >> i just want to thank my team that organized this group and i want to thank hour subcontractors, danny's crackers, bay cities, cleveland wrecking, acc, crisp company, far west, and bleco electric who all preformed their work diligently and got it done way ahead of schedule. the weather was a -- a real big determiner in this work. we had a lot of overlay work, striping asphalt work. >> okay. hold your questions. we have to get through a couple more things real quick. let's get down it. the bridge will open at 7:00 tonight. we will start picking up cones at 7:00 tonight. that process is going to take a little while. we have to get back and slowishly start this process very safely. in a moment i will ask the chp to come up and talk about safety. we will probably be expecting our first vehicles coming through the toll plaza around 8:00 p.m. tonight. so, sam, if you could come up and say a little bit about safety. >> california highway patrol have helped in the closure of the bridge and will also assist in the reopening. we have people assigned at each of the hard closure locations, interstate 80 west, interstate 580 west and 880 north. we are asking everybody too bit direction of all chp people on scene, to be patient and don't drive past any chp vehicles unless told to do so. do not enter into any coned off areas or interrupt the removal of the cones just to be the first to cross the bridge. we will escort the first group across the bridge so you are asked and warned to obey all directions, if they do not the chp will take the appropriate enforcement action. officer to the toll plaza for the first time there are changes. i want to go over them. yes you have nice fresh new pavement and great striping but as you come through the metering light area and go into the listening to the live news conference, the headline, the upper deck of the bay bridge will reopen ahead of schedule. just a few moments ago you heard it live here on ktvu channel 2. the upper deck will be opening tonight at 7:00 p.m. you may remember caltrans had planned to keep it closed until tomorrow but again the work, the striping the laying of that new asphalt has been finished and they expect the bridge to reopen tonight at seven. you heard a word of warning from them, he about drivers, you may experience changes, it'll look different. be sure to be extra careful but the headline, the bay bridge will reopen tonight at 7:00. >> that's when they start picking up the cones but the first vehicles may not go across until about 8:00 tonight. we will of course monitor this all night long. the closure of the upper deck this weekend is right now creating some big traffic back ups at other bridges. here is a live picture of the golden gate bridge. you can see all the vehicles, that's a southbound direction. this back up traveled all the way back to 580 in richmond, westbound traffic trying to get into san francisco, getting off the interstate, 80 bit at richmond onto web 580. heavy traffic going across the bridge. all the way through man rain and then southbound on 101. the bridge says traffic has increased over the past two days since the bay bridge closed. now we want to show you the san mateo bridge. the vehicles heading westbound on highway 92 from haywood heading toward san mateo of traffic is light but a lot of people taking bridge as well. they can't use it until 8:00 tonight. >> the bay bridge closure is causing problems on san francisco, we want you to take a look. this is lumbar street this is about two as you can see here in the pictures, traffic to start at noon tomorrow. i talked to a restive of the sheriff's who said the demonstration could be different than the protests we are used to seeing. the no parking science mark the day. crowd uneventful prison protests with i-580 and the bridge absorbing traffic from a closed westbound bay bridge, extra officers will be on hand to try to stop any disruptions as they to and from the gates. that's where the neighbors many will be stuck on a closed road and spend the holiday at home. >> it's okay. i have homework. >> reporter: with the announcement we heard a short time ago the bay bridge closure opening early, may not be part of the problem tomorrow. we were told that the protest here normally when we have protests here, around a scheduled excushion, the state will reimburse local authorities like the sheriff's department for the cost they it get dealing the protests. since tomorrow's demonstration is like any other, then the county and local taxpayer also foot the bill for the separate shootings. the first just before 12:15 at 98th avenue and c street. someone called the police reporting a shooting and then hung up. when officers arrived they found a man in the street suffering a gun shot wound to the chest. he was pronounced dead. so far police haven't made any arrest arrests. an hour later gun fire broke out at a home on seminary avenue and heys. police got a call from a woman saying her son had been shot. the victim a man in his 40s was found dead inside the home. family members say he walked inside the householding his chest and then collapsed. investigators say they believe the victim may have been shot outside the home. police haven't released any suspect description. >> singing legend whitney houston was laid to rest today in a private searching for three men in a shoot that left a man in critical condition. it happened around 7:20 last night in a small field behind strand wood elementary school. officers say a 20-year-old was shot during a robbery by a group of three men. he is still in the hospital tonight. police say three juveniles were also robbed . in the south bay a 15-year- old is under arrest after what police are calling a gang related stabbing at a mall. it happened around 7:30 at the east ridge shopping mall. when officers arrived they found two teen victims with stab wounds. they are expected to survive. police say they are searching for two more suspects in the attack. >> wal-mart is pushing forward with plans to expand one of its storing in the east bay. this despite a legal set back. the retail giant wants to add 33,000 square feet to its store on lone street way. the addition would make it a super center complete with a grocery store. wal-mart filed paperwork with the state appeals court
