A High School Graduate will head back to high school today in brentwood to get his diploma that he shouldve gone at his ceremony but he was not allowed to participate because of his clothing. Robert malcolm reports the School District has now apologized. He graduated basic training and high school but when he came to receive his diploma he was turned away all because of what he was wearing. He saw me and was surprised and then he was like whats that . Very plain faced straightforward what is that . I said my dress uniform im walking in this and he said no. He was told by the principal of liberty hyde eye he would not be able to graduate with his friends if he wore his army uniform to the ceremony. It was a big disappointment. He has always wanted to serve his country, basic training was grueling even shoulders much older couldnt handle the demands. s father also a military veteran was perplexed and stated California Law which gave his son the right to wear his uniform. It is outlined in the Education Code. He is allowed to wear his uniform for graduation and root of a cap and gown. Facing backlash the School District responded releasing a statement reading no slight was meant to harlan or the us army with some notification im sure the principal and the administration would have come to the conclusion before the ceremony. The principal and the district to support the armed forces as exemplified by the recognition of graduating seniors that have chosen the military for their postgraduate plans during the ceremony. The water is too choppy for small boats and kayaks those small boats are important because they escort the 2000 swimmers who make that swim from alcatraz to the shoreline. Without the escorts on the water it is not safe so that is why the swimming portion has been canceled. You can see a lot of participants and disappointed faces people walking back completely dry. Instead, they will continue the remaining portions they will have an 18 mile bike ride and the eight mile run but obviously disappointed participants. Where did you come from . Moran. Not too far. That helicopter is one of two based out of napa they are the eye in the sky for all life area counties all the way down to santa cruz. A 25 member team and these guys are busy. We fly to nine counties almost 7000 square miles 7 Million People we take personal responsibility for the people. These choppers and claims are deployed daily part of what they do is being visible. Each member of the unit is also a Highway Patrolman. They take their streetsmarts to the sky. It is one of those secret spots. Only locals come to enjoy it but it is a nice place to come. There is a lot of history in these small pools of water. The pools were so dark it looks like an inkwell you would have on your desk. This whole stretch goes all the way down to samuel park it was a tourist attraction at its height in 1870s. In 1874 you had the Pacific Coast railroad and this was right behind us and the line would run up this tree and the railroad would grow across the way and continue up the creek. The railroad long gone now this is everybodys and nobodys. It is an unmaintained facility the pool falls on private property but the lower pool is owned by the municipal Water District and below that is the state park. A lot of the access belongs to the private property owners. So how do you get there . It is along st. Francis boulevard and there are even some parking spaces. Has this place always been popular . It seems like they have become more popular in the last few years. Finding them takes some time you have to cross the bridge. On a weekend it is very busy. Just take your time crossing. The bridge was built to connect the trail and offroad access for cyclists to get through the park safely. And then you have to get off the pathway and there you are. The Entrance Point is kind of hidden a little bit. Most people wouldnt find it normally. The view is spectacular. The water below is a cool 50 to 60 degrees and the wells are deep enough for people to jump in. But, a word of warning. People can and do get hurt. I personally dont recommend doing it. There has been a lot of medical issues. It all comes down to using good judgment. It is a little scary but i have done it before. Make sure the water is deep enough. If we could find one complaint it is how some people are taking care of it sometimes families dont want to go because of trash at the site. Ranger mike cleans things up for the people who are enjoying this treasure. I would recommend this spot. The secret may be getting out but our trip to the well felt special. It is like hawaii. It is gorgeous. I wasnt sure when i was doing research talking to people what it would be like but it was awesome. I bet everyone said why did you do this story . Now they know. He graduated basic training and high school but when he came here to receive his diploma he was turned away because of what he was wearing. He was told by the principle of liberty high he wouldnt be allowed to graduate with his friends if he wore his army uniform. It was a big disappointment. I felt very disrespected. Parley fletcher has always wanted to serve his country, basic training was grilling soldiers cant always handle the demand, his father bill was perplexed and stated California Law which gave his son the legal right to wear his uniform. Is outlined in the Education Code that he is allowed to wear his uniform for graduation. Facing backlash the School District responded releasing a statement reading no slight was meant to harlan or the u. S. Army. With a little prior notification im sure the principle and administration would have come to the conclusion before the ceremony. The principal and the district to support the armed forces as exemplified by recognition of graduating seniors that have chosen the military for their postgraduate plans. Again, i apologize for this unfortunate incident and thank him for his service. School administrators were well aware of the plan before graduation according to harley. Police have arrested a man accused of trying to assault a gas station employee. The 27yearold from morgan hill was taken into custody yesterday. She managed to fight him off by hitting him in the face and then running away. Police were able to identify the rest and make the arrest later that day. Police are looking for a killer after a man was found dead in a home. Officers called to a house on big bend drive after hearing shots fired early yesterday morning. When Police Arrived they found a 23yearold man dead in the home. Officers are now following up on some other information. Police do not believe the killing was a random act of violence. Reporter yes, most of the 2000 people who registered for the race and the swim portion of the triathlon were already here waiting for the boats that would have taken them to alcatraz so they could do the swim back. People were waiting for the boats that is when organizers announced the swim portion had been canceled. Apparently it was due to concerns with the weather and water conditions. The coast guard put out a small watercraft advisory which means that the kayaks and the small boats that usually escort the swimmers, it was unsafe for them to be in the water. Without the votes escorting the swimmers is not safe. The event has been going for 37 years this is the first time in recent history the swim portion has been canceled possibly the first time in its four decade history. We are looking into that. Amtrak officials confirm one person was killed by a train in Solano County yesterday just outside of system before 3 30 in the afternoon. It is the second time this year someone has been hit by a train and died in Solano County. The 135 passengers were delayed for about one hour they were put on another train to continue their trip. Police are looking for a suspected credit card thief. These videos were released of the woman, she charged thousands of dollars on someone elses credit card late last month. All of these thefts were in Sonoma County. The actual credit card holder says she is not sure where she left the card. So if you dont have a crowd of people on bikes to start this at the same time. They will still have the eight mile race the running portion of the triathlon but the swim portion was canceled earlier this morning due to the weather conditions. Exactly, we had a meeting with race officials in the Marine Division the Police Partner Marine Division and it was a Small Craft Advisory we could not put the support on the water to support the swimmers. To clarify when people swim from alcatraz it is one and a half miles they are escorted by peoples in kayaks in case they get in trouble right . Exactly usually they depart in front of the island and then there are paddle boards and kayaks to support the swimmers through the swim portion so without them it is not safe. This event has been going on for 30 years it is the first time the swim portion has been canceled. We heard about athletes wondering what will happen with their place in the race next year because you have to apply for the lottery system. It is a bucket list race. People come from all over the world so unfortunately with Mother Nature they will do a modified race today and we will give them first dibs next year everybody registered for a day will have the opportunity to register for next year. The water system at the rio hotel and casino in las vegas is being disinfected after two guests contracted legionnaires disease. They stayed separately at the hotel in march and april, one of them said he started to feel sick a few days after he got back home from his trip. He thought he had the flu. They sat me down the three doctors and said chris, you have legionnaires disease. I said am i going to die . Legionnaires disease is a bacterial pneumonia that spreads through water droplets. The hotel water system was tested and results came back positive for the bacteria. He believes he contracted it from the jacuzzi at the hotel. It is underway with some modifications. You can see the athletes are starting the 18 mile bike ride. After that they will have an eight mile run. The race is going on but it is called escape from alcatraz because the swimming portion is definitely the most popular part of the event. Earlier this morning we saw a lot of disappointed faces and dry wet suits as the athletes started coming back from pier 41 after they found out the swim portion was canceled. It all has to do with the weather conditions. The water is to too choppy. Normally when swimmers swim from alcatraz to the marina green they are escorted by people on the water crafts. Because of the conditions it is unsafe for the people in the kayaks. It is not safe for the swimmers so that is why they made the changes. We spoke to some of the athletes this morning. There is some disappointment. But i am only from salt lake city. There are people from other countries and they are taking it pretty well. We had a meeting with officials the Police Department Marine Division and it was just with the advisory we could not put the support vessels on the water. In addition to the 2000 athletes taking part some professional athletes, there are friends and family members who come to support them and watch at least the biking and running portions of the race. A lot of disappointment because they couldnt do the swimming but, the race is still underway. The race director got on the pa system and let everyone know there will be no refund regarding the event. Coming up, chp is taking to the skies to help those in need. We will step aboard this rescue chopper. When we come back. California Highway Patrol is patrolling the sky and the roads. I had a chance to check out their air Operations Unit from napa where they are on call every minute of the day. A chp chopper sits at Stinson Beach waiting as firemen gear up for surf rescue operation training. Five days of intensive training. The goal is simple to coordinate efforts with the chp helicopter above and rescue below. While operating in 50 degree ocean waters where a few seconds could be the difference between life and death. These guys will be challenged to respond to surf rescues among dramatic coastline. We might not be able to get to these areas by boat. The urban surf and rescue team has been around for two decades. In the last three years they have responded to 106 rescues much of their success is linked to the chp brothers in the sky. When it is done safely and the individuals that we are there to rescue or train with and we pulled them into the helicopter safely and we are back on the ground it is a great day. That helicopter is one of two here from napa along with two planes. They are the eye in the sky for all nine bay area counties. It is a 25 member team and you know what, these guys are busy. We fly into nine counties. 7000 square miles with 7 Million People. We take a personal responsibility. These choppers and planes are deployed daily canvassing Northern California. Part of what they do is being visible. Each member of the unit is also a Highway Patrolman they take their streetsmarts into the sky. You show up to work and you dont know what you will be doing. You could be searching for a missing elderly patient or adult or chasing a criminal. You never know. It is true, in april a chp chopper saved a man trapped on the cliffs of San Franciscos china beach. The rescue played out on ktvu. He was a very lucky guy. There were a lot of people that called it in, but we were able to come in within five minutes of being there we had him back on solid ground. When not on a rescue they are in full Training Mode weekly rescues on this week they were coordinating with vacaville fire. Foisting victims to safety. It is a valuable tool for us that is why we trained so frequently. We want to be on the same page when incidents occur. The chp chopper was just called to the lake in may after a Small Plane Crash. Their unit also helps cal fire. They were vital during the 2015 fire that torched over 8000 acres in napa and Solano County. We are very busy. We come back long enough to put in fuel turn around and go back out. We are always remembering that we are doing this in the best area of the country. 9 25. Depending on where you are, bringing beautiful blue skies disrupting the marine layer the clouds and fog have not been able to form look at this gorgeous start partly cloudy skies over the Higher Elevations temperatures in the upper 50s in santa rosa, 56 San Francisco. A look at Storm Tracker and here is the system you can see the counterclockwise motion diving further south and when it does it will bring the possibility of showers to the area favoring the Higher Elevations and the north bay once again bringing sierra snow and you can see the pink and white south of highway 50 with snow levels dropping down to 55 down to 5500 feet. Highway 50 and i80 will be impacted. If youre driving over the next way for hours there arent visors for the roadways. Be prepared for some snow for us a chance of scattered showers in the afternoon. Police released these videos of the woman who charged thousands of dollars on someone elses credit card last month. The shopper went to several Stores Including safeway in Sonoma County. One person was killed by a capitol corridor train in Solano County yesterday outside of sis soon. The train was traveling between oakland and sacramento. Amtrak says the person was trespassing. It is the second time this year someone has been hit by a train. Nobody on the train was hurt but the 135 passengers were delayed for about one hour and then put on another train. Police have arrested a man accused of trying to sexually assault a gas station employee. The 27yearold was taken into custody yesterday. The incident happened at 6 30 yesterday morning at the shell gas station on east down avenue. A woman who works at the gas station says a man walked in asking for free adams so she asked him to leave. He then grabbed her and dragged her to a storage room. She was able to get away by hitting him in the face. A suspect was arrested later that day. Pacifica police are looking for a killer after a man was found dead in a home. Officers were called to the house after someone reported shots fired early yesterday morning. When Police Arrived they found a 23yearold man dead in the home. People in the neighborhood were able to give officers some information and they are currently following up. Police do not believe anyone else is in danger. A High School Graduate will head back to School Tomorrow morning to finally get his diploma that he shouldve gotten at his High School Graduation ceremony but he was not allowed to participate. As Robert Malcolm reports the School District has now apologized. He graduated basic training and high school but when he came here to receive his diploma he was turned away because of what he was wearing. He saw me and was surprised and then he said what is that . He very plain faced very straightforward said what is that . I said it is my dress uniform. He said no. He was told by the principal and vice principal he would not be allowed to graduate with his friends if he wore the army uniform to the ceremony. It was a big disappointment. I felt very disrespected. Parley fletcher has always wanted to serve his country. Basic training was grueling. His father bill also a military veteran was perplexed and stated California Law which gave his son the legal right to wear his uniform. It is outlined in the uniform code he is allowed to wear the uniform for graduation. Facing backlash the School District responded releasing a statement late saturday reading in part. No slight was meant to harlan or the us army. With a little prior notification im sure the principal and the Site Administration would have come to the conclusion before the ceremony. The principal supports the armed forces as exemplified by his recognition of graduating seniors that have chosen the military for the postgraduate plans during the graduation ceremony. Some of the 2000 athletes that are registered for the event are taking part in the 18 mile bike ride followed by the 18 mile run. The swim portion was canceled earlier this morning because of choppy conditions and unsafe conditions for a small boat on the water. Here to explain more is james bill race executive producer. You were telling me earlier that it was apparent when you were out there met before the swimmers started and conditions were pretty bad. It was unsafe period. We are not going to put anybody in jeopardy. We have some really great swimmers and they said it is not a good idea. The issue was with the small watercraft a lot of people might not know when you swim they are escorted by people on kayaks and small boats in case anyone gets in trouble. Exactly. If those small watercrafts are worried about taking care of themselves, they cant take care of the athletes. What will happen for the 2000 people registered for the event . It is kind of a bucket list sporting event because not everybody gets to do this. People put in for the lottery just to participate what will happen next year . That is the thing, it is not uncommon in the triathlon for a swimming portion to be canceled but what we are going to do.
