What this will do is if you have a first offense or second offense or third offense, once you get a drunk driving arrest, rather than have your license is suspended you can have the ignition interlock Device Installed on your vehicle immediately. With repeat offenders they account for one third of all drunk driving crashes. Four counties in california mandate the devices for dui convictions including alameda county. Making it a state law would save lives. In the four counties in the past five years with a Pilot Program in place, those devices have prevented drinking and driving over 1 million times. Hill has been trying to pass the bill since 2012. His motivation is personal. I last lost my best friend to a drunk driver 30 years ago. I saw what that did to his family and to all of us. Happening now i80 closed in fremont because of a deadly crash. California Highway Patrol reports one person is dead after a crash on the northbound side of the freeway near washington boulevard. Investigators working at that freeway site at this hour. It is not clear how long they will need to get information from the crash. It will be shut down until they finish that work. We are following news of an officer involved shooting in san mateo county. Reports this man was walking on 101 this morning. California Highway Patrol called and try to get the man off the freeway. He brandished a knife and there was a shooting. Christian captain live in belmont where investigators are trying to figure out why the man was walking on the freeway in the first place. Reporter good morning. Investigators try to figure out how the man wound up on the freeway. This is the roadway. This is 101 looking northbound in the ralston avenue area. This is where this unfolded earlier this morning with reports that a man was walking in the roadway close to that while you see there. Reports he was walking on both sides of the wall so california Highway Patrol responded. We have video because all the northbound lanes were shut down following this incident as california Highway Patrol in belmont td and other investigators conducted the investigation on the roadway. The individual was walking on the roadway and california Highway Patrol says officers came out to talk to the man and tried to get him to get into a vehicle but he did not. At one point he brandished a weapon and officer who was initially involved used a taser to try to subdue the man and get him to get off the roadway. The man did not comply. The officer fired on that individual and that man is now in critical into recondition treated at stanford medical. The investigation is underway. Belmont Police Investigating the officer involved shooting and how the man roundup on the roadway in the first place. I dont have the name of the individual at this time. We are still trying to ascertain how we got on the freeway. But he was doing out here. There were some traffic snarls in the area as traffic had to get off of 101. You can see traffic has resumed through ralston avenue exit northbound. Belmont 101 looking northbound seems to be moving normally for anyone traveling in this area. Still under investigation and the man in the roadway, no word on how he wound up on the roadway and no indications of the vehicle on 101. I asked that to california Highway Patrol to find out if there was a vehicle the man may have been associated with a new reports of a vehicle yet. How the man wound up on the roadway, condition critical so we will follow on this investigation to figure out what authorities know about how the man got on the roadway and who he was and what happened earlier this morning. 101 is back up and running. How long was the freeway shut down. For a number of hours. It was shut down from around 2 00 to around 8 30 pm. It took hours for them to work on this investigation to figure out what happened out here and anytime there is an officer involved shooting that is a reason why they shut down all traffic on the roadway to see what did happen here. Christian captain, we appreciate the update. New from overnight, one person dead and two others hospitalized after their car slammed into a fence at bancroft middle school. This happened 3 00 this morning. The driver was going very fast at kalen avenue. For unknown reasons he did not stop for the intersection and continued straight and collided into a wall at bancroft middle school. Right now we have confirmed that one person is deceased and two others have been transported to local hospitals. Investigators say the car hit the school fence but did not damage any buildings. You can see the damage there and it looks like it is minor. All three people in the car are female but they have not released any other information on ages or hometowns. 200 people expected to survive. At this point they say they believe classes will be held as usual tomorrow. Time now is 8 06 pm. Fire crews mopping up after a big fire overnight. A four alarm fire near to 80. Flames and smoke. This could be seen from 101 and 280. Crews arriving on scene last night. They found one of the Storage Facilities on fire and that spread to 14 more units and 15 total. San jose Officials Say the cause of the fire under investigation. Police are continuing patrols downtown after first homicide of the year. Courtney brown left a sports bar when police say he was shot three times in the back. Investigators will not say if they know what led up to the shooting but they do think that the victim was targeted. Witnesses were able to give for a give a description. They said he was an African American male in his 20s. Approximately 6 feet tall and 160 pounds. Four years ago walnut creek have problems with a drunken brawl at clubs. They added street patrols on the weekends. People along the creek have seen fewer problems in the past few years. Police in san jose investigating a stabbing that happened at leon dry. Police were called to the scene yesterday morning and found a man dead on the ground. There have been reports of fights in this is that 37 homicide of the year in san jose. San jose had 30 homicides all of last year. Police cracking down on prostitution in this city. Seven people recently arrested in a prostitution sting in the downtown area and four of them out of the lay health and the others from. Lee, vacaville, berkeley and oakland. We are still think major backlashes this morning for San Francisco quarterback Colin Kaepernick over his decision to stay seated during the National Anthem during friday nights game. Social media played into this. He said he will not stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. Kaepernick had been sitting down instead and in a statement explain why. He said he is not going to stand up to show pride for a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. Kaepernick went on to say this is bigger than football and would be selfish on his part to look the other way. It didnt sit well with many of and expands who expressed their displeasure by burning his jersey. At the raider game last night cornerback willie brown was asked to weigh in. It is not good mainly because he is an american and we tell the guys you have to stop those things. Its inappropriate for any player or coaches to do those things. He couldve waited after the game or some other time in seeing the whole world looking at him. Its not good. It is disrespectful. It is disrespectful to the organization and his family. Those things tie in. Kaepernick got his first playing time of the preseason friday after sitting out the 49ers first two games due to injury. There was an officer involved shooting there near belmont. Yes, it all started with a man on the freeway walking back and forth. We have been live in belmont all morning and sales that the man is now in the hospital after reportedly pulling a knife on an officer. Christian, what is the latest . Reporter yes, we are still looking for an update on the condition of the man who was taken to sanford medical center. And now the traffic is back to normal, that is the area where the shooting happened this morning. And where the man was out on the roadway. And now video so you can see what it looked like early they are morning with chp out here, they closed down the roadway for hours. And investigators gop the calls about a man in the roadway, they arrived on the scene and the officer who first arrived try today get the man out of the roadtried to get the man out of the road. The man pulled out a knife and held that knife over his head. The officer on seen sceneon scene ever scene said he used theon scene side he used the taser but it didnt stop the suspect and then he had to fire on the suspect. We dont know who the suspect is or how he came to be in the roadway in the first place. Once our officers were able to locate the suspect, the suspect, as they were trying to detain him, was resistive, they deployed a taser to know avail. Ultimately, the suspect produced a nine, held it over his head and lunched to one of theand lunged to one of the officers. Reporter and again, a big concern for people driving in the area, now over. People are able to travel northbound on highway 101 multiple investigationings are under way right now investigations are under way right now to try to find out who the man was, how he got here in the road, and whether it was a justified police shooting. The officer involved, again, did have another officer here on scene who was able to shed some light on it. So there was at least two chp officers on scene who were able to talk about what happened and tell investigator what is happened here on the scene. That suspect still at stanford medical center. And now two people are re coffering from stab wounds after they were stabbed on a dart train. Police have a male suspect in custody, he was caught a few blocks away from the scene. New this morning, we have new information on the shooting death of the cousin of nba star duane wade. Two brothers have been charged in connection to the shooting. The 32yearold woman was killed friday afternoon while pushing her baby in a stroller near the school. Two men we canwalked up and startedmen walked up and started shooting at a third man and he was an innocent bisander. She was justbystander. She was not bothering anybody and bullets that fly around, they have no name, decide today find their way to her head. Her baby was not hurt during the shooting and is now being cared for by family members. The men who are arrested are a 26yearold and 22yearold. It is all about improving quality of life and meals of wheels just hit a major milestone. Right there, in bethel island. Thats week, they served their 5 millionth meal. And here to talk about it and their accomplishment is paul, the cofounder. How are you . Good to meet you. Good to have you, it is a lot of mashed potatoes. What does that mean . 5million meals served . Well, the meals on wheels actually has been around far long time. But 1990, we founded a non profit called meals on wheels, and the reason we did it was that we had waiting lists of 150 people a day, we could not bring meals meals to. And so we start todaymeals to. And we start today raise money for that purpose. And so on august 17th, we hit that milestone. We had subsidized 5 million meals, delivered through the county wide meals on wheels. Can you wrap your arms around, that is a lot of food. It is amazing. And tell the viewers how many meals do you deliver a day . Well, we are projecting 415,000 meals, all to home hold elders withhome bun elders home bound elderrers without getting a meal this coming year, or the year that we are in right now. And that works out to about 1615 meals a day perching. And how big of a staff . A lot of people it takes to put this all together. Well, we have meals on wheels, probably has a staff of about 20 now. We work with four non profit corporations around the county, chartable non profits, that we pay to coordinate meals in various regions. And we have a Central Office staff of only about six, receiver, mainly parttime seven, mainly parttime people. And what kind of meal did linda debt get . I dont knowget . I dont know, i dont remember. You know, that is fine. I think it is really important that you are not only delivering meals but you are delivering friendship. Because a lot of the people, no one knocks on their door. And i noticed that they just light up when you walk in and they off some conversation and friendship. Oh, yes, almost half of our seniors live alone, of our home bound elders and among those who do not live alone, many of them are with codependent spouses, and they like to get out of the house. And a requirement to be on meals on wheels is that you are not able to shop or prepare meals on your own, that you need the program no survive, really. And so, yes, a meals on wheels volunteer, there are 1000 of them in our county alone, is the only visitor a home bound elder has during the day. Well, you are doing great work.
