Firefighters are busy this weekend fighting a dozen wildfires across the state. Many of the fires have been burning for days and now thousands of firefighters are working. The three firefighters in San Bernardino were treated for smoke inhalation after a grass fire. At least four of the homes were destroyed. You can see the damage. A survey found that homelessness is the number one concern among San Francisco residents. Helping homeless who are mentally ill is one of the Biggest Challenges in getting people off the street. Reporter michael has lived with Mental Illness all of his life. Diagnosed with anxiety and panic disorder and severe depression as a teenager, the 40yearold reaches lowest point in 2012 after spending two years homeless on the streets of San Francisco. It will it scared me. For the first time in my life it was like im going to do this. He checked into a Psychiatric Hospital and he says doctors said they were going to release him. He knew that meant he would be back on the street. With the medication i was on was a working. He said he would be in the same position all over again. For many who are homeless and mentally ill it is a revolving door. The city survey estimates that 130 of the cities 6700 Homeless People suffer from psychiatric conditions in many this at the time weddell clinic in the tenderloin district where pamelas with low treats Homeless People. From psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia to depression and emotional trauma. Is different from any other kind of illness. It is the illness itself that prevents people or can prevent people from knowing they have something that could benefit from treatment. And then doing something about it. The doctor says many times the moshe could do is make it connection with the patient hoping they decide on their own to receive treatment. People dont want to take medication then it is a matter of time and trying to convince them it is worth a try. And fisher at the alliance of Mental Illness set a change happened in california in the 60s when the state close half of its Psychiatric Hospitals and Ronald Reagan signed a law preventing the mentally ill from being forced into treatment except in the most extreme circumstances. Of people were released from hospitals without proper support in the community and often decompensated and then when you have new populations who needed longterm care, a hospital setting, those beds were not available. There are new attempt to get people with the most severe cases of Mental Illness into treatment. Last year laura flaw lawyers law went into effect. This was named after a 19year old killed by a mentally ill man. It allows family members and loved ones of people in the community so that if they know someone with Mental Illness to petition the court to bring that person in front of a judge to compel treatment. Ultimately a patient can refuse treatment and that is part of the problem says willie brown. The standard now is they must either be a danger to themselves or danger to other people. Otherwise you cant do anything. We need to change that law. And make it more appropriate for the circumstances of individuals who will thank you for having gotten assistance. Michaels breakthrough came when he realized he needed help in the case manager helped him get into a program. Pain, misery, loneliness. That is what broke through. Now in treatment and back on medication, his life changed dramatically. Today i dont live in an institution. I have an apartment with my fiancie. He now mentors psychiatric patients at general hospital. We feel like we are being judged left and right. There is stigma around Mental Illness. When we feel that we can open up a space with no judgment, it is something i wish i had had. I didnt have that. He hopes his story will help others follow in his footsteps. In San Francisco. Every once in a while something classic comes along and falls into my lap like bfg which i read often to my children when they were growing up and knew the book intimately. But i had a chance to read Melissa Matheson who also wrote et, when i read her adaptation of the book i absolutely fell in love with what she had done. I read the book as well and have a vision of it. Do you ever feel like you have a responsibility for you are working with a classic that people love to do a good job and make it true to what it should be . I always want to make something true to the source material weather it is something out of the pages of the annals of history or whether from an authors imagination. In this case i felt this book didnt have the product needed to sustain itself as an hour 40 minute movie. With the permission of the estate we then put a little plot to go along with the beautiful dialogue. I think it is very close to the book. It is a very accurate interpretation of dalton. After your project comes together when you go to the theater, is it easy to watch something that you did and put aside the making of it and sit there is an audience goer . Thats a good question. For me it is years later. I dont immediately see my movies when they first come out. I need perspective. And i need distance before i could see it again. For the past week, k t vu has been taking part in a media effort to report on the state of homelessness in the bay area. Yes, this morning we are going to look at how the San Franciscos Mayors Office is trying to combat the problem in one of the most expensive housing markets in the country. And there is a consent that a housing fist approach is the best way to combat it. Yes, and it is easier said than done. Reporter e. Coli this woman was homeless on the streets of San Francisco for more than ten years, she lost her job and when her daughter was killed in a domestic dispute, she lost all hope. I was actually wanting to chit suicide. Reporter she became addict today alcohol and drugs, and spent years on a waiting list for one of the apartments that the Church Provides for the chronically homeness. Just seven months ago, the 62 yearold finally got the news she had been praying for. I was so, so relieved. I am sorry. It is the simple fact that i know i am keyed in and i dont have to worry about something copping in on me, you know, raping, kidnapping, raping me. [ music ] reporter she says after spending so many years on the streets, very a place to live helped her get sober and off of drugs. I dont have a desire to drink, i dont have a desire, i see the crack coming up, when i walker down the streeted, i see the crack, people smoking it, it does not bother me. Reporter this reverend and his wife, who founded the church in the heart of the tenderloin have been on the front lines in the fight against homelessness for more than 50 years. This woman says that housing is an important first step, but it does not stop there. A homeless person, when you have them housed, if they are not supported, they will not retain the housing, do not continue to have Community Meetings and medical and Mental Health care, and case management, it is very difficult. Reporter there are a lot of programs for the homeless because everyones needs are different, from the drug addicted to the mentally ill, to the elderly, to members of the lgbt community. The people who are homeless are perceived as if that is their choice in life. That is their way of life. And that is not. So many people are homeless because they have lost their jobs. So many people in San Francisco, particularly, are newly homeless because of the rents. Reporter the rent in San Francisco is now up to 4500 a month, fueled by demand from high paid tech workers in the city. Demand has also wiped out available sis in single room hotels, which usually provide rooms to hundreds of Homeless People. But now the rooms are going out to paying people, for more than 1200 a month. During the last year, the number of available sros in San Francisco drop today just 76 as more landlords discovered they could cash in. Jennifer with the coalition on homelessness says that the biggest challenge at hand is the lack of Affordable Housing in the city. That is where we have taken the nose dive in San Francisco. That is where the pipeline over the next six years is carry. So if we continue on this direction, if it is bad now, we are going see an explosion on the number of people lincolntoning rob the streets. Living on the streets. [ music ] reporter sam is working long hours to make sure that does not happen. As second in command in the newly formed department to deal with homelessness, which is called the office of hope, dodge thinks that the city can reach the mayors goal of helping 8000 people out of homelessness in the next four years. It is a big challenge, but you know, we live in a community, right, that thinks very easily about self driving cars, but you know, this idea that housing cures homelessness and that it is daunting to find housing for those who need it, i can reject and we can do it. Reporter starting next month, the Mayors Office of hope is expanning from six employees to more than 100, with an annual budget of a quarter of a billion dollars. We have not had the opportunity to Work Together as a system and really all grow in the same direction and put all of our assets going to the same thing. Reporter former San Francisco payor, willy brown says that there is no way that the current mayor can do such a large thing. Is there clearly not enough Affordable Housing, not enough available housing and property cessna we go thereprocess that we go there, you will be inspired. Reporter the number of Homeless People in the city has almost doubled since he was mayor because of the migration of Homeless People in San Francisco. They are in other locations and people tell them how much better off you are if you are in need in San Francisco, verses some other prays. And so they will come to San Francisco for that purpose. And we are a very generous city. Reporter buff the city is slowly finding space, bying up properties and adding homes where Homeless People can live and have peace of mind. It is a peace of mind that this woman is feeling for the first time in years. I almost gave up. [ music ] but, i am glad i didnt. Reporter he says her heart is filled with gratitude because she finally has a place to call home. [ music ] because i am very grateful that i finally stopped running. Two Richmond Police officer who work with youth have been reassigned. Lieutenant hill was the manager of the youth and special Services Division and officer tong was a School Resource officer. They are accused of having sex with and 18yearold woman who says she is a sex worker. The young woman also had sex with officers from other Police Departments when she was under age. I opened up onit opened up on friday morning and sent thousands of gallons of water pouring out near businesses and into businesses as well. Bay area Law Enforcement officers are out in force this fourth of july Holiday Weekend. They are looking for drivers who have had too much to drink. And actually, i was hurt in my career by a firework. That being said, you know, i debility want to see that happen to anyone else and you know, i was lucky that you know, i recovered from it. But it was very traumatic ex peep yes, sir and that can happenexperience. And that can happen so quickly. In my case, it happened very quickly and throughout every year, we see burn injuries, we see injuries associated with explosives, ear trauma, trauma. Andeye trauma. So the lesson of the day is, in Alameda County, there are two cities with safe and sane fireworks, they are union city and dublin. And the Alameda County fair has fireworks sews. Yes, it goes on for a long period of time. It is a family environment, it is very well put together. We have a map to show you because you can see how far they stretch. Right now, thousands of firefighters are working were hard. Three firefighters in San Bernardino street treated for smoke inhalation after a small grass fire there yesterday afternoon. You can see the aftermath, at least four of the homes were destroyed. The fire burned close to nine aches but now fully contained. The cause is still under investigation. And a fire in El Dorado National worst has s now 3d hundred acres. It is still just 12 contained. Right now, 2600ohms and other buildings are still at risk. So far, no homes or buildings have burned. And it could be a long fire season, that is because summer rains may not be as consistent as usual this year. Grass and trees are also very dry because of the drought. They could be high through august and then go down some time in september. Moving now to gill roy, the police are looking for vandals who badly damaged christopher high school. I thought about showing you how grill a steak, but you know how to do that but nobody knows how grill pizza. Reporter yes, that is really cool. What is really cool is that you are saying, really anyone can do this, go to trader joes and get the dough and it is easy. Yes, you can still do this for tomorrow. So easily. Reporter good, all right. Trader joes has pizza dough all ready to roll. I first saw this when i was 19 yearsold waiting tables in college. It was so great. So we have the dough here, we are using some flour on the board and then a little bit on top. And you want to use just the right amount of flour so it is not going to stick. Reporter now do you have to do anything differently, people who you know, not necessarily me, but people who generally do this stuff and have used the dough it is different when you are going to a grill . No, it is the same handling. But steams the gluten is very active. So it is sort of hard to stretch out. So sometimes i will just use my fingers and this is really good to be handling. Reporter that is who the what it looks like when i try to do. I well, i already have a hole in it but it does not matter because it tastes great and looks rust i can.
