When you are looking at the social media posts and tweets they talked about the scene from the victims saying they got out. You have those three hours where he was inside with the victims and you have to wonder the decision to storm the club. I know you have reported he may have given his name but whatever he was saying did not lead them to believe that the long standoff was going to either save lives or resolve the situation differently. It seems that way. They were in contact with that standoff back and forth by mobile phone. The accounts of people who were trapped inside the club people were trapped in various rooms. They were texting and calling 911 and texting Family Members and authorities trying to give them intelligence. Trying to tell them what was going on in trying to get rescuers inside. A lot of terrified victims inside that club. Initially the investigators could not go in because they believed midteens body may have been boobytrapped and they had this band at the scene. There was concerned there could have been an improvised explosive device around his body. Investigators looking into his body and the fan and checking social media to get as much intelligence and background about this as possible and figure out what the origin of the attack may have been. They have to tread lightly because a number of victims in there were probably shot during the three hours so they had to wait. Busy have hostages in there. The chief of police addressed it and said it is unknown how many victims were shot in that initial shooting and then the three hours that followed. All the loved ones trying to get a hold of their families. I have seen posts on twitter giving hotlines to try to reconnect. Over 100 people. Major call for donor blood. Over 50 victims presumably from gunshot wounds in the back of pickups going into area hospitals. Our hearts go out, and awful morning. We will continue to monitor developments in the newsroom. In the last hour, police say they have found most of the victims. What a chaotic scene inside the nightclub. Kristin captain is fly our news room and learning is in our news room and learning what may have an a motive what may have been a motive. 50 people have been shot. 50 more in the u. S. Hospital. Making this is the deadliest shooting in american history. Sources are now saying that omar mateen was on the radar of Law Enforcement but was not the target of a specific investigation. The incident attack happened when he especially entered the pulse nightclub and opened fire. Witnesses inside the club say there were as many as 320 people inside the club at the time. Police say mateen started shooting the victims with a handgun and assault style weapon. An off duty officer was working security and started firing at mateen. Mateen went back inside and barricaded himself and held people hostage for three hours. Its unknown how many 50 victims were shot in the initial attack and how many were shot during the standoff. After three hours, the decision was made by Orlando Police s. W. A. T. Members to storm the club and take out mateen. About 30 hostages were able to make it out once s. W. A. T. Members killed mateen and cleared the club. This is a popular gay and lesbian destination in orlando. The special agent charge in charge say he may have leanings towards radical islam. They are looking for possible terror ties. I think its more likely than not that it was attack. He doesnt have to have any association with a group but theres no coincidence that the attack place where and when it did. Theyre looking into ties with jihad terror groups. He was well organized and well prepared said police. We are waiting for another briefing in half an hour. This takes place as pride is taking place in the bay area. We learned that there will be a individual till tonight in San Francisco at the harvey milk plaza. We will continue what is going on there and bring you the latest developments. We are expecting more information in about an hour, hopefully more information about the possible motivation behind the suspect. Did we hear, are all of the victims out of the nightclub . They have been able to go in. The decedents are still there. All of those who needed to be transported have been transported to orlando Regional Medical center. Frank, you mentioned this earlier, the video coming out of orlando, astonishing. So many casualties that police were forced to use pickup trucks and literally load victims into the back of pickup trucks to try to get them medical attention as quickly as possible. The ambulances overwhelmed. There were so many victims at the time. We can only imagine the situation is the local hospitals. Christian, are you sensing it feels like were shifting a little bit. In the first hours when this was happening, they were trying to get a handle on the situation as we were trying to get more information about the shooter and what they learned in the threehour standoff with him and the hostages. At that point they needed to get in the club and attend to the people in there and kind of organize the scene. It feels like now that they have been able to get in there and get us numbers, now the investigation part, we can take a step back a little bit and figure out what went on here. Claudine, i think youre exactly right. I think this has switched from an emergency situation now to an investigation as to motivation, a look as to what may have been behind this attack. Find out where this gunman, if in fact he was radicalized, if it was overseas or domestically or selfradicalized. Try to find out if anybody else was involved. Authorities say it doesnt appear to have been anybody else involved inside the club. But were looking for anyone who might have known about this, trying to find out about the suspect. You have to feel for families who are calling their loved ones, calling the hospital to find out if they made it out okay. And of course the First Responders that went into that nightclub, i can only imagine. Thats right. Authorities have set up a series of hotlines for Family Members to get in contact down there. You can imagine its a logistical nightmare. They have set up a hotline essentially so Family Members can call in to try to find out who was injured, who was killed. At this time, it is a logistical nightmare trying to figure out how to get information out quickly and efficiently to those affected. The Ongoing Investigation into mateen to find out what his motivations may have been, where he may have been. All of that is still ongoing. I think what is raising all of the questions, why did he pick that nightclub . Why did he target it . They talked about it as being a soft target, not having as much security because theyre not expecting obviously Something Like this. I dont know who would. Right. But that pulse nightclub, 300 some odd people. It was latin night at the club. We know that. But the city where he is from is saint pt. Lucie. Its a good dissance at that way a good distance away from the nightclub. Yeah. What led him there. Hopefully were going to get more information. Certainly all of that under investigation. Why did he pick that particular location. Now that they have a name to associate with the suspect, they can really start investigate that and look into mateens background, look at his social media to see if he posted anything, if he left a manifesto behind or anything like that. All of that under investigation now that they have a name to attach to all of this. And talk to his family and figure out what was leading up to this. Thank you, christian. Well, it is a tragic event. It happened overnight. 50plus dead, 50plus are in the hospital as they try to put together why and how this all happened. Its a helpless feeling. This vigil tonight, you talk about it on social media, the prayers going out and let the Community Know that our thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by this. Gusts at 31 Miles Per Hour. It has been blowing pretty strong like areas through fairfield through most of the morning. Concord at 13 and napa. As we get into the afternoon, it will continue with the westerly breeze expected today. Because of it, fairfield, one of the spots that is starting out cooler this morning. The rest of us up 4 to 6 around the bay. Santa rosa had a cool start to the day. Low 60s in napa. 65 in oakland. 64 in san jose. Now, with that on shore breeze and the low clouds coming back by the afternoon, we are expecting a bit of a cool down. 86 for antioch. Beautiful weather. We have upper 70s in san jose. 68 San Francisco. As you get into the north bay, 81 santa rosa. Yesterday they were in the mid 80s. Definitely going in the downward direction. We are going to live to tahoe where a new summer escape is opening up. They are promising fun for the whole family. We continue to follow breaking news out of orlando, florida this morning where police say 50 people are dead, including the gunman and 53 others have been injured. The gunman has been identified as 29yearold omar mateen. He is a u. S. Citizen and his parents are from afghanistan. He had an assaulttype rifle and a handgun when he opened fire inside a crowded nightclub in orlando overnight. The shooter was killed in a gun fight with a s. W. A. T. Team. We continue to follow this story out of orlando throughout the morning. When you talk about the chaos that erupted out of this, there were heartbreaking tweets. These two people that she knows were out safe. They just crawled out of the ac unit. Keep praying for them. One person tweeted out god is good. I made it out safe. Thank you for your prayers. You can feel the terror in the tweeter. The nightclub itself was tweeting run and keep running. Just get out. Can you imagine at 2 00 in the morning probably dark lights and music pumping and somebody starts shooting, you dont realize what is going on until its too late. Over 300 people were inside the nightclub. A third of them were either wounded or killed. You have to talk about the terror that they must have felt for the people who were stuck inside. You have the people who initially got out. Then there was a standoff with police for three hours where omar mateen was communicating with police. We hear thats how they got his name. It was released as quickly as it was this morning. But then whatever transpired in those three hours convinced them that they needed to just go in and end this. We do have a lot of people reacting. Of course we talked about the vigils tonight in San Francisco. You have Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi also reacting. We are horrified and heart broken to see such hate directed at people just wanting to spend a night out dancing. That is nancy pelosi out of San Francisco. President ial candidates have also been reacting this morning. So horrible. It makes you wonder, we are talking about gay pride week coming up in San Francisco. It will have a whole different tone, i would imagine. They have to be careful because of Something Like this. There is a lot of standing in solidarity. The governor tweeted out this morning. After about three hours, a decision made by Orlando Police s. W. A. T. Members to storm the club and take out mateen. Police say now about 30 hostages were able to make it out of the club once s. W. A. T. Members killed mateen and cleared that club. As to a possible motive, the pulse nightclub is a popular gay and lesbian destination in orlando. The fbi special agent in charge says that mateen may have ties to terrorist groups. Investigators say that mateen was organized and well prepared for this shooting. Now, we are expecting more information and a briefing on this in about an hour. Again, investigators saying that the shooting happened after that the officers made the decision to go in and storm that club after about three hours of a standoff. They were dealing with a hostage situation. So, you know, in that in that time, we need to set up, reevaluate, reassess what is happening, and make sure that all of the pieces are in place. We have enough staffing to take care of any situation. We have our vehicles that come to the scene. And those were crucial in the rescue of those hostages. Now, again, we just learned that the president is expected to speak at about 10 30 this morning. We are also expecting a News Conference from governor rick scott about this. With anyone with information about the suspect to come forward with what they know. They are looking for any information to determine what the motivation may be and find out if anybody else may possibly have been involved in this horrible, horrible incident. Its just terrible, christian. Its hard to wrap your mind around really all the different aspects of this investigation as theyre trying to work their way in and as we wait for more information from authorities. Theres nothing that they said that indicates why they decided to end it when they did. The new number saying 30 people made it out, we dont know how many people. Again, thats the big question. That would be a motivating factor. If they knew there were 30 hostages still inside. We know that hostages were inside. They were texting and calling out to investigators, to Police Officers, calling out to Family Members, texting Family Members, letting them know they were still inside the club. Certainly that would be a strong motivating factor for orlando plus to go in and take out the suspect, rather than wait for a different outcome or try to negotiate with him. Crucial three hours there too. Because the number of victims, some dead, some not dead inside that club. They needed to get them out. Thats one of the questions that has been raised. Why wait three hours. Why did it wait three hours to go in and storm the club . And florida orlandos police chief says it takes that long to rally the equipment necessary. They needed to get s. W. A. T. Teams in place. They needed to get material in place, special vehicles in place. They needed to bring robots in so they could try to breach as safely as possible. The threehour window under scrutiny. Questions why they waited three hours. The police chief saying it take thats long or it takes some amount of time to organize the massive effort to try to get in there and get him out. We talked about there are chilling accounts on social media when people talk about getting out by airconditioning units. Theres one from a woman who says she was outside trying to contact her 30yearold son inside and he was texting her said he is coming. And then next text said he has us and he is in here with us. And so it sounds you know, if you take that, it sounds like he may have been rounding people within the nightclub which is just terrifying for those inside. We have heard reports of dozens of victims trying to make it out through one door. Again, we need to get a better idea of what exactly the layout of the club was. One of the exits may have been the size of a cupboard. Dozens of people trying to fit through there as quickly as possible, trying to get out of pulse in orlando. Christian, we understand hospitals are asking for Blood Donations as they must be overwhelmed, like a triage situation. And floridians really rallying. There are lines outside. We have been monitoring the video from florida and we can see long lines of people standing outside Blood Donation centers. They are looking for type o, the universal blood type. They can taking whatever they can. You can imagine the trauma sustained by the victims is tremendous. They need as much blood in florida as possible. We talk about how people here can help. Thats what people feel i think when Something Like this happens across the country. We feel this sense of helplessness because we want to do what we can to make a difference. You talk about the vigil being held tonight at 8 00. We have pride, you know, in two weeks. That is something to keep in mind, a possible motivating factor. This is pride month. As pride related events in florida getting underway. Pride related events in the bay area. A sense of community here. Thats one of the reasons why were going to see that vigil set for tonight at harry milk harvey milk plaza in an fran. Port st. Lucie is an hour and a half, two hours from orlando. Why did he pick that place . The length that he went to to target that nightclub. Were hoping to get a better idea of that. The next News Conference is set to take place in just about 22 minutes or so. So were hoping to get more clarification on perhaps why he chose to come to orlando, why he picked that particular location. All of this a very fluid investigation at this time. So information is coming out. And, again, we have to be very careful about which information we choose to air. Information coming out in the course of the investigation may later prove to be false, not through any not through any fault of Law Enforcement. Certainly. Its developing so quickly. Were trying to get that information out to people as quickly as possible. But certainly a lot of questions. Hoping to get more answers in about 20, 21 minutes. So we have another update coming up with Law Enforcement down there, you said . Right. Another another Law EnforcementNews Conference will happen in about 20 minutes. Keep in mind, these have been delayed as the situation develops. This is a very fluid time. So it takes time for them to figure out. And they want to make sure that they can get the latest information out as quickly as possible. Youre talking about different agencies. Youve got the local police, youve got the sheriff, youve got the fbi. I think, christian, now were going to go to a live picture from the scene with an update from the fox network on what is happening down in orlando. Lets listen in. It is remarkable to think that one person could kill so many people in such a short period of time of time. Yeah. Anita, of course this morning lots of suggestions about radical islamic terrorism as a motive. A hate crime being a motive. A tragic sad nexus of both of those coming together with him targeting the gay nightclub, maybe a hatred of homosexuals. Do we know anything else about what drove him to commit this horrific, offensive act . Eric, were still waiting to get confirmation on that. This morning officials alluded to some type of radical islam and they walked that statement back a little bit. Then just a little while ago we heard from florida senator bill nelson who said he had spoken to members of congress on the intelligence staff and that perhaps there was some connection to radical islam. So were hearing a lot about that this morning. Not too many details about exactly what that tie might be. Of course we did also hear from mateens father this morning. He spoke to other members of the media. And he told them, as you mentioned earlier, that his son was bothered or angered by seeing two men kissing in florida. That bothered him and that perhaps that set him off into this known gay nightclub last night. That perhaps that could be the motive. Of course, eric, were collecting facts this morning. Were working on it. Whenever we have something new, we will bring it to you. We will probably learn more as the days unfold over the reports that mateen was part of some type of terrorist investigation by the fbi. Two different ones. One in 2013 and one more recently that were apparently closed. That information clearly likely to come out in the coming days. Orlando Police Say Nine s. W. A. T. Team members stormed the nightclub after a tense three hour standoff killing the gunman in a fierce gun fight and one of the officers was injured when a bullet struck his helmet. For more on the investigation, lets bring in michael solomon. He is a former Intelligence Officer with the u. S. State department. Mr. Solomon, lets start about what the investigators on the ground there are looking for in terms of collecting physical evidence, you know, gun shells, et cetera. What are they looking for right now . Good morning. First of all, my prayers and my heart goes out to the families and the victims. Its an amazing horrific act. What they are doing right now is gathering any evidence that they can. Its inconceivable that one person with one ar15 can do this but it can happen. Theyre going around and looking for everything. Theyre going to try to trace anything that they can to indicate it. Most probably this morning theyre looking for all of the ammunition and the shell casings lying around to see possibly what his path of action was when he came into the premise. Thats probably what is happening right off. But first and foremost thing that the Police Department does is they want to take care of the victims and get them secure and get them out of there and to medical help the first thing. Thats the first thing that has to be done. We have to look at what the cause of all of this violence is down the road. Until we identify it, until we call it what it is, whether its radical terrorism or home grown, its terrorism in the sense. Many networks dont want to say terrorism. They use t. Its terrorism. Lets call it what it is. And senator bill nelson had contact with the congressional intelligence staff saying omar mateen had terrorist connections. Knowing that mateen was on the fbis radar not once but twice, many people are asking how and why. How does a guy who is trained trained Security Officer with a statewide firearms license category g which gives him far more leeway with that gun in terms of carrying it and where he can carry it, how does this man slip into a nightclub at 2 00 in the morning and snuff out 50 lives in. Political correctness triumphs once again. There are questions that you cant ask of potential employees. You cant ask questions about peoples medical records, whether they are in a psychotic ward or not or mentally unstable. Thats the problem today. We have to get back and stop being politically correct. We have to learn to treat people as what they are. If theyre radicalized and on a watch list you know, in the 50s, we picked up communists because they said they were communists. We were picking up nazis under the fdr administration. We have to get back to it. All of this political correct stuff didnt occur until after 9 11. Theyre demanding politically correct prayer rooms in airports. We have to learn to start looking at things differently. Sure. Sir, your point is well taken, very well understood. I do want to find out before i let you go if you could give us an idea of how this investigation is going to move forward. We do know it has been reported that there are some ties to terror rale cad islamic terrorism. What happens now . We know he was born in new york. He is a u. S. Citizen. His parents are from afghanistan. He has a wife. He is 29 years old. Omar mateen. He is born in 1986. This year he will turn 30. How do investigators find out going about if there are connections. Perhaps in another country to this mateen person. They are going to have to investigate everything from his social media accounts all the way through. They can go back and look at the internet and they can go back and find the ip addresses and see where they have originated from, any messages he might have sent out or received coming from and try to interpret those and try to find if there are ties there. Its no different than taking a dna sample at a murder scene and finding somebody. We can do it electronically today. Social media has been the vehicle they have been using all these years. And its amazing. And now we want to give the now congress has a bill in front of it to turn over the internet to the control of the united nations. What is that going to do to it down the flood what kind of investigative rules are we going to have when we cant get certain information. Michael solomon. Go ahead and finish your thoughts. I just want to say that we have to realize what is going down here. This is realize were at war. It main be a war with an army and a uniform. But we are at war. War has been declared on the United States and anyone not a muslim. That is coming right out of the quran. That is from michael solomon. Former Intelligence Officer. Thank you for joining us. Thank you. Have a great day. And we will continue our coverage of this horrendous crime that is another attack against our country, our way of life, the massacre in paris. 89 dead. Overnight in our country, 50. 50 folks are out on a saturday night just having a good time in downtown, orlando. Now, 53 are wounded. Many of them in Critical Condition fighting for their lives at this moment in what is being investigated as a domestic terror attack. Coming up, we will hear more gripping and heart felt witness accounts of what they saw when this happened. You turn around and the person next to you is screaming. Theres blood splattering. Welcome back, everybody. We continue to follow breaking news in florida. The massacre at the orlando nightclub that claimed 50 lives is the worst mass shooting in u. S. History. At least 50 people were killed. And then you have another 50 or so injured. The gunman has been identified as 29yearold omar mateen. Were still getting some information about him. We know that he actually lived about an hour and a half north of where this shooting actually happened. Officials say he is a u. S. Citizen. His parents are from afghanistan. They are looking into possible ties to jihaddist terror groups. They say he was organized and we will prepared. And Officials Say he is a u. S. Citizen. His parents are from afghanistan and live here in the states. Police say he had an assault type rifle and a handgun when he opened fire inside a crowded nightclub. I saw one report that said all the victims were shot with that Assault Rifle. President obama is expected to make a statement on the tragedy in orlando in about one hour. And we will bring that live to you here at ktvu. In the meantime, you know, we talk about the social media. They talked about all of the people who texted and reacted from inside. Here is a chilling tweet from someone. I cant explain what happened. I was there with a nurse for her birthday. She got hit in the shoulder. We ran out back. We know now that of course the people who did get out safely very lucky. This is a tweet that we statement we just got from San Francisco mayor ed lee. Yeah. And it states n is a stark reminder of the violence that still threatens our lgbt community. Senseless acts of violence against innocence fueled by hate and deadly access to firearms has become too frequent. Gay pride starts in a couple of weeks. Yeah. In San Francisco. Were going to follow this. And we will have more when we come back. Local Law Enforcement will be swift in their justice. We have great Law Enforcement in our state. Theyre always going to do the right thing. We i declared a state of emergency for orange county. Were going to provide all of the resources that anyone needs. But i can tell you that everybody is going to work together. And thats one thing great about our state, orlando, orange county. I want to thank all of the federal agencies for their support. Our hearts and prayers go out to everyone impacted. I cant imagine a Family Member waiting to find out what happened to their loved one. It has to be heart wrenching. I know the state attorney wants to stay something. Thank you. I just wanted to thank the governor for coming down to join us. This is a terrible, terrible evil act. As a father of seven, i called and checked on some of my kids this morning to make sure they were okay. Were doing everything that we can. Law enforcement is working well together. Our victim advocates are helping out to help with families. I encourage everyone as i did my staff to please donate blood. Were going to need a lot of it. I want to thank the local Law Enforcement officers for the amazing job they have been doing. We will be glad to take questions. Excuse me for just a second. Law enforcement has already said the mayors have said when they will have another press conference. There are a lot of unanswered questions. At that time, they will be able to answer some questions. Was the suspect someone on your radar . I know theres a later press conference. Law enforcement will answer all of those questions. This is clearly an act of terror. This is you just cant imagine this would happen to our community, our state, or anywhere in our country. For somebody to go in there and be an active shooter and take those that number of lives any life, but that number of lives and injure that many people, it clearly is an act of terror. Right now we are this is the time to find out exactly what happened, the time to pray for those who have been that have lost the families that have lost lives. Pray for the victims. There will be plenty to deal with how the Society Comes together. I can tell you, the orlando area, orange county, the state of florida, were very resilient. We will come together and do everything that we can to help everybody impacted but also bring the Community Back together again. I have not talked to him yet. What does that mean for the families of the victims. We declared a state of emergency to make sure that all of the resources necessary for the city and the county would be necessary anything that is needed from the state is available immediately. The head of Law Enforcement is the coordinating officer. We with you worked with the mayors and the sheriffs and the Police Chiefs to make sure that they have all of the resources they need. Law enforcement will answer all of those questions. They are having another press conference at 1 30. Do you know how many families have been contacted at this point this. I know this at this point . I know they are working hard to reach every Family Member and also they have victim the state attorney said they are taking care of all of these families. You cant even imagine. I have daughters, i have grandchildren. I cant imagine this happening to my family. Its devastating. You know, you dont want this to happen anywhere in the world. Okay. But i can tell you Law Enforcement, our elected officials, the mayors, the at the state level, we hope this never happens. Its devastating when you see you know, when you see how many people lost their life and the impact it will have on their families. I mean, ive got kids and grand kids. You cant imagine. We will meet with the families at the appropriate time. Look what theyre going through right now. [unintelligible question] i think i understand that has been resolved. Is there anything that you can do to stop Something Like this . Look, were deal withing a tragedy right now. Our prayers go out to everybody impacted. Law enforcement is doing their job. There will be plenty of time to think about how do we make you know, continue to improve our society. We will continue to work on how to do that. Were a resilient state. Ill answer you one hipaa question. The ceo of the hospital came to me and said they had an issue related to the families who had come to the ergency room because of hipaa regulations. They could not give them any information. I reached out to the white house to see if we could get the hipaa regulations waived. The white house responded through appropriate channels to waive those so that the hospital could communicate with the families that were there. I dont know. I think the majority of them have been. We have not identified the victims that are still in the nightclub. But i believe that the ones who have been transported to the hospital and are deceased have been identified. Thank you. I have spoken with the president , the governor. The everybody has lent their support to this. The president offered any resources that the federal government could possibly provide. The fbi has just been tremendous. The fdle has been tremendous. We have no complaints about our state partners and federal partners and their help. Thank you. Well, the waiving of the hipaa laws so that the doctors and Health Care Personnel can communicate with Family Members was probably the most important. But weve got on the ground what we need from the federal government right now which is the fbi and all of their resources and the coordination with fdle and opd. Theres not much more that i can ask of them. They were here immediately in response. They have done a lot of research into the shooter. They will be prepared, i think, to update you on at the next press conference, probably around 2 00. Thank you. Thank you. I am state senator jeraldine thompson. And pulse nightclub is in the Senate District that i represent. I just had an opportunity to speak to the governor about the state of emergency that he has declared and to thank him for making sure that the resources that are needed come into this community. And we know that there are people donating blood. While they are making that sacrifice, were calling on the community to support them by providing water, providing food. And the governor and i are going to have a serious discussion about reform. Because the families not only lost members of their family to this tragedy, but they lost a feeling of safety. And so when we talk about safety, we have to talk about how guns come into the hands of violent and unstable people. How is it that assault weapons that are used in military operations get into the hands of a single individual . And how is it that magazines of weapons and bullets that are usually used in military combat come into our communities . So we cant feel safe until we address those issues. Those are some of the things that i will be talking to the governor about. Every time we have one of those mass shootings, we talk about reform. But nothing is done. This has brought it home to our doorstep. As i said, im going to be talking with the governor about what we can do with regard to some of our laws. We have people who guy guns at gun shows and they are not required to have background checks. They can buy guns from private individuals and theyre not required to have background checks. So these are some of the kinds of things that can be put in place. And i am heart broken for the victims. Im heart broken for their families. I want their families to know that we are working to address this problem. So hopefully we wont see this as something that is routine that happens in our communities time and time again. And you have been listening there that was Florida State senator jeraldine expressing deep concern for the families and appearing exhausted that another mass shooting has taken place on our soil here in the United States of america. And before that, we had orlando mayor buddy dyer at the mic. And also before that, governor rick scott was addressing the crowd there, the reporters there. The main thing that buddy dyer said, they have waived the hipaa laws so doctors and families can communicate freely. And it struck me that governor rick scott, he made it quite personal, eric. I felt he came there first of all to let everybody there know that their leader is there with them. You are not alone through this. We will cooperate with all of the levels of authority necessary. And he made sure that there is he declared a state of emergency so that everyone can get all necessary tools to complete this investigation, to find why this happened, how this happened. But mostly it struck me that he made a very personal made it personal to himself. And just to let everybody know that he was there with them. That is what struck me when he got to the podium, almost breaking down at one point, governor rick scott. Think about the families. Thinking about showing up at the hospital when you havent heard from your daughter or son all night and the hospital officials cant tell you anything about it because of the hipaa laws, the privacy law. This has been a situation with parents and cole he cans for years. Theres been legislation to try to change that. Those being attend today by the physicians at the hospital can share the information with them now. At the same time were learning the stark and horrendous site of the pulse nightclub right now. Some Family Members clearly not having heard from their loved ones, from their sons, daughters, brothers, sisters at this hour. So many hours after this happened. Because of those questions, i think its very crucial that the hipaa laws have been waived so the doctors can communicate with the families freely. This is of course an Ongoing Investigation. We are going to continue this coverage here on fox news channel. Were going to bring you the very latest up to the minute. Stay right here. As we have been reporting, this is now the worst mass shooting in our history. This time an alleged radical islamic terrorism from the gunman, identified as 29year old omar mateen. He is from port st. Lucie, florida. He was investigated by the fbi twice in 2013 and 2014. But those investigations apparently closed. We will likely hear more about those when federal authorities address the media later this afternoon. He struck at the pulse nightclub, which is a popular gay nightclub in downtown orlando. And our next best has been following this since this morning. Joe kelly is a morning news host of orlandos morning news on wbbo, the main news station in orlando on the road. Joe, first, our condolences and prayers are with you and with your city all over the city right now. The dimensions of what happened overnight, can you start in what we know in terms of the timeline. At 2 02, orlando, you have off Duty Police Officers who work security at these events. There was an offduty Police Officer who started to Exchange Gunfire with the suspect. Yeah. It happened the first call came in at 2 02 a. M. And maybe by coincidence, maybe not. But we have just wrapped up the annual gay days celebration in orlando. And its often, you know, something that is witnessed and seen and talked a lot about at the theme parks. But it also happens in the communities and in some of the nightclubs. And pulse is a gay nightclub. And on top of that, its a puerto rican cultural weekend. It was a latinothemed party last night. A very international crowd. And the man comes into the club with what is the Police Describe as a long rifle, something along the lines of an ar15 and a handgun. And he is seen by an Orlando Police officer. Whether that was onduty or off duty officer, were not entirely clear on that. Either way, the officer engages in gunfire with the gunman. That was at 2 02. Eric, it wasnt until 5 00 a. M. That the orlando s. W. A. T. Teams entered the building and put an end to what ended up being a hostage situation. So for about three hours, the gunman was holding about 30 people hostage inside that building. Obviously theres a lot of confusion. Like in paris, when you hear shots, you dont know what is going on. It could be part of the show. Not clear what it is. A mother says that her son was tweeting and texting her mother saying he is coming. He went into the bathroom and they were in the bathroom and he texted his mother, quote, he has us. He is in here with us. Sadly we dont know at this moment, at this hour what happened with eddie and those who were in the bathroom. So, joe, apparently he goes into the bathroom where he is holding hostages. What did police do then and why did this continue for three hours . They were having discussions and some communication with police. What can you tell us about regarding that. The next briefing will be after the president makes his statement at the white house. Were hoping to find out what went on during the threehour standoff. We were told early on let me rephrase that. We werent told early on that there were any deaths. So we dont know if all of those 50 people who were killed were killed before the 2 00 a. M. Call or if they were killed during the hostage standoff. So there obviously will be a lot of questions that have to be answered. And the police themselves may not know the answers to these questions just yet. This is going to take a long time. Not only for the investigation, the suspect and the motives and any potential ties to terrorist activities and groups, but clearly how this went down last night. Weve all been to orlando. Walt disney world, universal, you know, the whole downtown area is pulseiating and live pulsati pulsating and lively. This is not the community that i know, this shooting incident. The community that i know is what is happening right now. That is there are literally hundreds of people lining up at dozens of Blood Donation centers. So much so that have been lining up to donate blood for those who have been wounded and are in the hospital right now that a secondary has now gone out for people to help those who are standing in line to donate blood. So theres a call out now for water and for chairs and for umbrellas. Its hot today. Its sunny. Its 90 degrees. Theres a call out for additional food to be brought in for those donating blood. Its really a spectacular uprising and people gathering together and getting to the. And its not exclusive to any one community. Yes, it happened at a gay nightclub. But gay and straight and christian and muslim and jewish, i mean, everybody is getting together and banding together as a community to help out in the aftermath of this dreadful criminal act. And finally, joe, omar mateen apparently had to drive 125 miles from the coast from port st. Lucie. Why do you think he picked this nightclub . Is it widely known . Most widely known as a gay nightclub. One of the owners i understand has been very active in the movement, in this sort of thing. Is it, you know, the center in orlando . A beacon . Is that why, do you think . Well, just like i would suppose with straight nightclubs, there are some gay nightclubs in really nice upscale communities and there are seedy gay nightclubs in disreputable communities. Of the two, the pulse was in a nice community. It has nice houses and businesses and nice restaurants. I cannot imagine what in a million years would have brought him specifically to this club at this time to commit this criminal act, other than maybe he was drawn here by gay days, which is, again, its highly publicized that the gay days is in orlando, florida. Not only to people from around the state but people around the world come here to celebrate in orlando. His father said that he was angered at seeing two men kissing in miami a few weeks ago. His father claiming this does not have anything to do with religion. Joe kelly, we thank you for joining us. Again, our heart felt condolences. I know thoughts and prayers from every american around the country. This is an attack not just those in the nightclub last night, against orlando or florida but against our values, freedoms and what we mean as americans. This is another attack against us. Joe, thank you. Thank you, eric. Thank you, joe. And as Law Enforcement sifts through the aftermath of the mass shooting in orlando, hospitals are in high gear. Theyre treating 53 people who were wounded in this horrible attack. Hundreds of people are lining up to donate blood. You have heard the plea to donate blood. That would be very helpful because there they are in the Trauma Center. I think i want to start there with you, doctor. You are a surgeon. What is happening in those surgical those surgery rooms there . What is happening is you are getting a lot of triage calls from what is going on on the ground. And the paramedics have a Critical Role to find out and tell us what kind of injuries were looking for. Obviously this is in a nightclub. Youre talking about gunshot wounds that is done in a short space of the nightclub. Youre looking at high velocity, penetrating injuries so you could have a lot of vascular injuries. So we are waiting in the hospital, the entire trauma booth. And the backup team is always there. The difference between level one trauma hospital and regular hospitals is you have inhouse 24hour surgeons available. The scope of this is beyond any other hospital that can take care of this. Vascular surgeons are on the way. And everybody basically get them, triage them. Blood products is vital because one case one of these cases if they have gotten any of the vessels, you may go through 30, 40 units of blood. Any major vessels of lower extremities. Sometimes we go through the cases and you go through many products. Frozen plasma, blood. If people can donate, thats the most critical thing to do. Dr. Segal, you were an er doctor for years. You saw this firsthand. Tell us what happens. You make sure that its clean blood. Walk us through what happens. First of all there is something called the golden hour. Continues always an hour but its the amount of time that you have from when you get hit by a bullet and get stablized in an emergency room. We call it an hour. If its an Assault Rifle, much worse with Assault Rifles. People usually dont survive that because the bullet fragments. Velocity is the key issue. Once it fragments, you have to follow all of the paths. The liver can be damaged and the spleen can explode. As david was saying, the number one thing that you have to do is think about severe blood loss. In the field once you stablize the airway, you get them to the emergency room and you try to get fluid and blood into them. Sometimes you have to drill down to the bone to get fluid in. You try to get blood as fast as we can. We have five litters of blood in our bod i if you lose more than two and that can happen rapidly in a situation like this, you go into what is called shock. You go into shock. And then it becomes hard to bring you back. On the scene you apply tourniquets. You dont always take the bullet out. You try to stop the bleeding. I think the key is the time. Time is of the essence. What happens is there are 10 to 12 people, whether respiratory, emergency room doctors, trauma surgeons, we are at the booth waiting for it. We are getting calls from the paramedics, saying we have someone not with great vital signs, we are bleeding. So we are calling for blood. Somebody else may have a fracture because they have been running so they can go to a different room. The entire process of the hospital shuts down. There will be no elective surgeries. The cat scan machines which usually is two or three of them have to be freed up. As far as the xray team and the cleaning people. Because when you get the patient out of the trauma, that room has to turn over within a minute or two because another patient has to go in. What is interesting about this kind of trauma, the entire team works like an orchestra. Meaning that everybody has to, would. Usually they rip all of the clothes off to look at the entry of the bullet wound. They look at the exit. If somebody is not stable, you get the control of the airway, which is important to intubate a patient. The operating room is ready, the surgery goes, and the next patient comes in. He is talking about triaging. Somebody gets shot in the leg. You can stablize them. But get to the people who are shot in the chest. Get the lung back up. If theyre shot in the abdomen, those are the people who need emergency surgeries. So hospitals are expert at that triaging. The other factor is psychological. You referred to that before we came on. Theyre waiving hipaa laws. People are coming forward with information. There is a mass gathering of people. You have to be calm in these settings and with any victim of a gunshot wound. I think what really happens is all of the hospitals this is very interesting. A lot of times the hospitals work a little different. This is a time that theres a central communication going on between the police, with the firemen, with the triage and all of the hospitals. And once one hospital is maxed out and you cant take care of it, the overflow goes to the secondary. This is when not only spiritually but the strength of american doctors and surgeons and hospitals come together to save. This is a lot of casualties. 50 deaths. And the numbers will escalate over the next two hours, this is a lot of work. It doesnt matter if youre a urologist or a vascular surgeon, you have to be involved to push the patients and everybody will come together. Thats really, really the key in a given crisis like this. One more point, this is orlando Regional Medical center. Number one, the front lines of this, the only number one Trauma Center in the Central Florida region. That has been said by you and the reporters. That is hugely important. Because there is nothing that theyre not equip today handle in terms of a gunshot wound. That is good news to hear. Thank you, doctors, for your expertise. Thank you. And a fox news alert for you as we continue to cover this massacre there in orlando. Police confirming 50 people were killed. 53 others wounded. And were also learning the gunman was armed with an Assault Rifle and a handgun. He was killed in a shootout with the police. And now investigators are focusing on his possible ties to terrorism. Steve harrigan is following this story in orlando. Steve, what is the latest on the ground . From where im standing 234 front of this Trauma Center where most victims have been brought. It started with a shootout between one shooter and one Police Officer at the pulse nightclub. It was latin night at the pulse nightclub. About 320 people inside of that gay nightclub. Those shots shots were exchanged and three hours later, a s. W. A. T. Team breached the door of that nightclub and rescued at least 30 hostages. As far as the shooter goes, he is a 29yearold man. U. S. Citizen. Parents from afghanistan. His name is omar mateen. 50 People Killed. 53 wounded. Many severely wounded. They have been brought to the Trauma Center behind me. Many of the relatives who were gathered at one hotel for news are in the agonizing position now not knowing if their relatives are dead or alive and they are searching and waiting for some kind of news. We just spoke to a man who is still looking for his brother. Here is what he had to say. He said he was in the club with three of his friends and he made it out okay and they lost him. They dont know where hes at. Im trying get information from the hospital or somewhere. He told us hes been calling his brothers cell phone since the Early Morning hours. Its been ringing and ringing. Suddenly that cell phone no longer ringing. A lot of people in a real position of agonizing, uncertainty here. Surgeries behind me have been going on all morning. They brought in six trauma surgeons here. The blood line is now blocks the blood line is blocks long. People trying to do what they can to help. Of course people will come together as a community, steve. Speaking of that, we got that same sense of community in paris. You were there at the paris terror attacks, covering that. Does this feel similar to you now that youre hearing orlando covering another horrific mass gun shooting . Reporter a couple of similarities poke right out. Its a soft target. In paris it was the theater. People listening to a band. Here, its a soft target. A nightclub. Young people inside. The second thing that stands out is just the brutality. In paris, it was innocent people out for a night. Simply gunned down with automatic rifle fire slaughtered. Here it is the same thing. The hard brutality of slaughtering young people. This time not in paris, in orlando. Very sobering. Thank you. Authorities now investigating the influence and possibility of radical islamic terrorism. As weve been reporting, omar mateen was part of an investigation back in 2013 and 2014 according to the daily beast. There was a terrorism investigation. Those cases are now closed. This happened before in paris, brussels, kenya. Can it be stopped . President of the American Islamic forum for democracy, author of the battle for the soul of islam. Thank you so much for joining us today. Americans all over the country right now are asking how does your religion, how can you stop this perversion, the ideology of terrorism that has struck this country since 1990. Eric, my prayers and especially in this month of ramadan are with the victims, with the family, with orlando and with our country. Words cant express every time this happens we keep telling ourselves at what point are we muslims going to look in the mirror and declare war on what has been declared war in america. This is not extremism. It is not lone wolf. I beg you to stop using that term. This is political islam. It has its different shapes. It attacks free speech. It attacks free secular countries. We saw it with Charlie Hebdo and now we need to stop the denial. Muslims need to be part of it. We cant get past it without real reform to get out of the 13th century and we need to have they said this individual declared allegiance to isis as he was being shot by the Police Officers. That allegiance is the enemy. We need to fight if were going to win this. We havent heard that confirmed yet. But that will come up with the investigations. You have a good point. A few hours ago in florida, they brought in a local eman with good intentions. He said that no one could have predicted this. It should not be sensationalized. Its happened in paris and San Bernardino. This is just the latest attack. I know he called on muslims to help police, et cetera. But they almost talk about this as if theyre bystanders and they have no idea how this would happen. In chattanooga, the killer, the terrorist declared that he wanted to establish islam days before the attack. San bernardino, they were part of the jihaddist school. We should realize that we need to be countering the ideology before they become extreme. And im sorry im not seeing enough anger from the Muslim Community about the ideology. In this month of atonement, we should be looking in the mirror to say what is it about the idea thats we harbor with us in the countries we live in. This radical clearly divided the world into the land of islam and the land of war and he believed gay bars, et cetera, are not part of iran or saudi arabia where muslims are supreme. He wanted to establish that here. We need to declare war on that intolerance and hate. The extremists have declared war on us and our values and our freedoms and what we represent. And they have been doing that for a generation now. And sadly it will continue. Thank you so much for your analysis and insight today. Thank you. Eric, were awaiting remarks from president obama on the shooting. Were expecting the president at 1 30 eastern time. Do we have any idea exactly what the president might say, kristin . President obama should be speaking at this podium in the White House Briefing room in about 30 minutes. This is where he spoke after sandy hook. This is where he spoke after the Charleston Church shootings. And this is where he will speak today after what is now the worst mass shooting in u. S. History. Now, the president was briefed this morning about what happened in orlando. He was briefed by his assistant. The white house released its first statement. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and the victims. The president asked to receive updates as they gather more information and directed that the government provide any assistance necessary to pursue the investigation and support the community. Now, Vice President joe biden has also been briefed. He was actually scheduled already scheduled to be traveling tonight to florida for a private fundraiser with debbie wasserman, the chair women of the national committee. The Vice President has canceled that event. He will be staying in washington and so will Homeland Security secretary. He was supposed to be traveling to china for talks about Cyber Security issues. It has just been announced that he too will be staying in washington. Thank you, kristin fisher. Again, we are waiting for president obama to address the nation at 1 30 eastern time as we cover this horrific story here coming out of orlando, florida. The pulse gay nightclub there. 50 People Killed. 53 people wounded. The deadliest shooting on u. S. Soil in modern history. So many questions continuing right now. Whether it was was indeed radical islamic terrorism that motivated him l it was hatred of gays or a combination thereof. All of this part of the investigation. Sadly the latest mass shooting with the leanings of islamic terrorism at its heart
