Fruit or something. An avocado. Half an avocado for that. Of course that is the big powerball drawing. Around 700 million. If you take the lump sum it is 320 million adollars or so. Three pieces of information. I have an issue with one of them. If you have the winning ticket, hang on to it. Take your time. You have three months to claim your prize. You cant remain anonymous in california if you win. I would like to change that for when i win. Exactly. Do you think you should change that . Should you be able to be anonymous. I would be want to be anonymous. Not put your name out there. Yeah. People come out of the long lost cousins. You also hear about a lot of bad fortune falling on bigtime winners. Were going to talk about the powerball coming up. Do you ever play. I never have. Take a shot. I bet you win tonight. Live on the wild side. I might. If you are playing, i wish you luck. We have to talk about what is happening here in the bay area. The story is developing and getting closer to what could be a very, very big weekend. Thats right. Organizers of a right wing rally dont have their permit for an event in crissy field this weekend. They are optimistic that they will get it, after explaining the security measures they are taking to keep everyone safe. Allie rasmus is live at crissy field with some of the details were learning about the restrictions that the organizers are promising to put in place. Reporter well, the organizers of that event, theyre calling it the Patriot Prayer rally that will happen they would like for it to happen here at crissy field in San Francisco against the back drop of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. The organizer of that event says that the National Parks service, he has been in communication with them, and he says they like some of the security measures that he has talked about enacting at his event this weekend. Some of those security measures he says no weapons will be allowed. Anything that could be possibly turned no a weapon like a baseball bat or a sign post will be banned. He also promises to put up fences to create a physical barrier to separate rally goers and counter protesters. And anyone attending the rally will be searched. Its not clear if it will relief the fears of San Francisco city leaders. They have urged the Parks Service not to grant the permit because of violence. Previous events hosted by the Patriot Prayer group have attracted white nationalists. People that we talked about to this monk are conflicted about the best way to respond. Should they take part in a positive counter event . Show up to the rally to show their opposition or ignore it altogether. I dont want to add to the hype or give them any notoriety. I think that silence i think if they dont if nobody shows up, then they see their small numbers. I do believe that we have to respond in some way. I dont think we can let these things happen and not react. I believe that my response will be to attend a positive, affirmative kind of gathering where and probably an inner faith gathering. Reporter along those lines, San Francisco city leaders and Community Leaders have organized two separate counter events away from crissy field in opposition. They say those events will promote peace and tolerance. One will be at city hall on friday at noon. The other will be a block party that will be held on saturday. Now, as for the rally scheduled here at crissy field, police are on high alert. They have canceled all their vacation for their essential personnel and every officer will be available to work this saturday in case any problems arise. Back to you guys. Allie, any reaction or a final decision s. Ation from the National Parks service. Reporter the National Park service has been tight lipped about the process, where they are in the process of granting the final permit or what the criteria is in terms. The only correspondence that we have seen publicly stating yesterday they said, quote, no news in an email when asked if they would be issuing a final permit soon. Thank you, allie. Today San Francisco supervisor ferrell said he will introduce a law to ban guns in San Francisco parks, plazas and tourist areas. He is joining us live via skype. I will get to the law but i want to ask you about this chris fee field this week crissy field this weekend. What have you heard about the permit. We have been talking with them over the course of the last week. We were shocked to learn from a constituent about the event itself. We were never notified by the National Parks service or anybody else. And it was our call to our Police Captain that led to the Law Enforcement discussions that are happening now. We were caught off guard. We have been talking over the past week. We do not have any visibility into their process of when they will issue a final permit or as we have written and called as city leaders examine asked them to deny the permit at the end of the day. If they get the permit, youre asking the National Park police to strictly enforce the open carry laws there at crissy field. Thats right. Federal law allows concealed carry permits. My understanding is this group and the militia that has stated that theyre going to be there to protect this group has those permits. However, federal law defers to california state law, which prohibits open carrying firearms. The we are asking our National Park service to enforce our california state laws. Supervisor, youre talking more about crissy field. Commercial and tourist areas, parks and plazas and public thoroughfares. Union square, this is wide seeping and would be one of the toughest bans in the country. Absolutely. There will be a declared armed militia regarding this event. It has taken us off guard. What were going to do, while we cant introduce and enforce or pass a law before this saturday, what i am going to introduce as soon as we get back in early september, the board of supervisors, is one of the strictest laws potentially on the books in our country that would prohibit the public carrying of firearms in tourist areas, commercial areas, places where you have strong Public Interest to picture that San Francisco residents in particular know that Public Safety comes first out of city hall. We will not allow an event like this to take place with an armed militia in the city of San Francisco ever again. Supervisor farrell, you might expect push back from guns rights groups. When they tried in in other cities it was challenged on constitutional issues. If this happens, you can expect pushback from guns rights groups. Look, i expect nothing less. About two years ago i introduced a law that any gun store in San Francisco need today video all gun sales. Because of that the last gun store in San Francisco closed and the nra was all over it accusing me and my office of all sorts of things. We dont shia way in San Francisco. And i will not shia way from making sure that the Public Safety of our residents comes first over the desires of the nra. Thats not the way its going to work in San Francisco. If im a good law abiding citizen, why cant i walk through union square with a gun . You know what, i think gun rights is very different when you talk about an urban setting like the city of San Francisco, when you talk about being in the country side and different states. Every jurisdiction should be able to have their own gun laws in place. As it relates to the city of San Francisco, there is absolutely no need for anybody to be able to be carrying firearms in the city. And certainly not as a city should we be sitting back and allowing affirmed militias to be guarding events in city. I know youre out of town. We appreciate you chiming in and talking about this legislation that youre set to introduce september 5th. Thank you, supervisor. Thanks for having me. In phoenix, arizona last night protesters clashed with Police Outside of a Campaign Style rally by President Trump. Authorities accused demonstrators of throwing rocks, bolts and tear gas canisters at officers. Police responded by firing pellets and flash bangs. Police say the heavy smoke filling the air came from the pepper spray pellets. They used it to disperse the crowds and stop the assaults on officers. At least four people were arrested. In a speech last night, President Trump spoke for 90 minutes in front of thousand of supporters. He lashed out at the news media, blaming them for the widespread criticism that he received for his response to the violence in charlottesville. He also repeated his Campaign Pledge to crack down on undocumented immigrants and build a wall on the border with mexico. We are building a wall on the southern border. And the criminals who prey on our people, we are throwing them out of the country or were putting them the hell fast in jail. President trump also criticized arizonas two republican senators, john mccain and jeff flake without mentioning them by name. Today he travels to reno, nevada where he will speak at the American Legion national convention. We have pictures of air force one in phoenix this morning. Sonoma state Political Science professor is joining us. I have eight talking points. I dont think we will hit them all regarding the rally. If i had a headline, yes, he was 40 minutes into the media about charlottesville. It is this shutting down the government if the border wall is not included in the budget. So the night before he is president ial. Yesterday he is campaigning. And he is campaigning again over and over again. The big news is shutting down the government. If it happens, the u. S. Credit rating goes sideways. It will hit republicans very hard. It will alienate him further on capitol hill. It makes it harder. When republicans and members of Congress Come back into session and head into september, they have a lot to get down. If the key thing is shutting down the government, that reverberate heading into 2018. When he campaigned he said that mexico would pay for the wall. Right. Now he is saying that u. S. Taxpayers may have to pay for the walling. The negotiation is going to get hard and difficult and theres a lot of balls moving in the air. That affects a lot going on. Immigration reform, tax reform. It affects the dynamics in the white house as well. Why is it that the president seems to bring trouble upon himself . In other words, he will make comments and then hes the one that seems to be bringing attention on to himself. If he were just to be a little more reserved, lets say, then he would be getting less criticism. Right. This was not his style. Unfiltered and unscripted last night. Thats where he goes. He is a campaigning style. It is all about contrast and difference. He is not really about governing or about policy. We have seen this in steve bannon leaves but he is hovering over last night and he will continue to hover over the presidency. Why is he not reaching out to those who may be in the purple or blue parts of the country, given the fact that the election is not that far away. It is not far away. The purple people that youre talking about, the red and blue green people stashed in the middle, they will determine who wins the presidency and the direction moving forward for 2018. He made no overtures towards that. He made an appeal to the conservatives. You will see that in reno today. He is going to talk about healing us today. You have this bipolar that goes back and forth. That is his strength. There are some that will come out and vote. Yeah. We saw that on election night. There are some people that dont want to add met. There is this social aspect of not admitting that youre with donald trump. But his bases held firm with him. We saw that erosion of that in the latest polling. Can you trust the poll . That is true. He loses some element of the core republican supporters. As the number dives down to the low 30s. Then democrats have a chance to retake the house next week. During the campaign, he attacked Hillary Clinton for a long time and called her crooked. Crooked hillary. He used the word crooked to the media and fake news and so forth. It sounds like he needs someone to attack. Would you agree with that . As a followup question, where is the Democratic Party leadership . Who is their lead they are is going to go after the president. The Democratic Party is without one voice. They dont know who that voice is and what those issues are. More importantly, what the president is doing is kind of divide and conquer strategy against the media is a winwin for him. He will continue to do that. If he spends half an hour attacking the media, that will continue to roll out and roll out. That helps him with the base and helps him with the purple people. It goes into the core, not the bay area, not in california. In the middle of the country. The media is not the one that made john mccain issuedu that one vote on health care that he brought up last night. He has alienated and isolated and misguided himself or moved himself into a position that is self defeating. That will make it hard for mitch connell, paul ryan. They will have to create a parallel governing party for the gop to move forward. The question is how well does the Trump Administration negotiate that while he tries not to alienate his base headed into 2018 and the 2020 cycle. Do you think he lied by admission when he rehashed his lines from charlottesville. On many sides. Are you arguing that the unscripted donald trump was terribly scripted. Yes. Everything that he does is thought through. It brings trouble on to himself. He causes his own trouble. He can push back on that. That goes to his republican core and base. Something to watch with the purple is female independent voters and how they react in the aftermath of what we have seen. So much to talk about. We got to four of the eight. Yeah. We will keep talking throughout the day. Coming up in a minute on the 9, a community continues to mourn the life of an off duty firefighter that was shot and killed last week. Im looking at the numbers from the powerball where no one won the powerball was number 13. I might have won. Is that your favorite number. It is. Probably not this time. Maybe it is a back to back 13 powerball. Favorite number, sal. 8. 8. Ill go with 16. Second largest lotto drawing in u. S. History tonight up for grabs. Powerball jackpot is now at 700 million. Alex savidge is at a store in San Francisco which has sold Winning Tickets before. Well, it may be a long shot. He sold winners before. I know and ive been here for years and i havent won yet. Then i think youre due. I hope so. That 700 million, by the way, is how much you would get if you took the annual payments spread out over 29 years. Your odds by the way of winning this powerball jackpot, about one in 292 million. Again, the odds are clearly stacked against you. But that does not stop a lot of people from playing. Lets go to dave clark with some of the headlines. Theyre are some of the top stories. The Patriot Prayer group is confident they will get a permit for the rally this weekend at crissy field. It wants to keep everyone safe at the rally, banning weapons, including guns and things that could be used as a weapon like a baseball bat or a sign post. Also fences will separate rally supporters from counter protesters. And anyone who comes to the Patriot Prayer zone will be searched. And on sunday, another rally is scheduled in berkeleys civic center park. Police have banned cars from parking around the rally area beginning on friday. Berkeley officials are asking people who are not part of the right ring rally to stay away from civic center park. Dont get involved in confrontations that could turn violent. The mayor of berkeley says violent, hateful speech from either side will not be tolerated. And President Trump will speak today in reno, nevada. He will be at the American Legion national convention. Afterwards he will sign new legislation that stream lines the processes that veterans go through to appeal claims for disability benefits with the v. A. Those are just a couple of the morning headlines. Mike, sal, gasia, ill send it back to you. Thank you, dave. A call to remove a statue of Christopher Columbus from San Jose City hall. There is a petition to have city take away the statue. They say it represents the genocide of nativeamericans and should be moved away from city property. The statue was donated to the city in 1958 by the Italian American community. In San Francisco, another controversy over a statue at city hall. Reporter it sits between the Asian Art Museum and main library near San Francisco city hall. You may not have noticed the monument before but it is gaining notoriety in the wake of the removal of controversial statues nationwide. Mainly confederate memorials. Just off the bat it looks degrading into a Facebook Group of about 200 people calls the statue racist and wants it gone. When we have a statue that is depicting the genocide of members of our community, it makes people feel like theyre not a respected part of San Francisco. Reporter supervisor jane kim supports the event to remove the statue that depicts a nativeamericans on the ground standing over him a missionary and spanish cowboy. Coming to, you know, show their dominance over native americans here. I look at it as a position of reprimand. Im not offended by it. And actually i have a native background. And im not owe phoned by it personally. But with that said, i would have to be sensitive to those who are. Reporter the statue dates back to 1894. In the early 1990s, there were cries for it to be removed. As a concession a small difficult plaque. I believe it is part of our history. The confederacy was part of the history. Most of those statues belong in museums where you can talk about the history and how they played out. Taking away the statue doesnt mean that we sweep away the history. We still have to continue to educate our city and our students about, you know, what we have done so we can learn from our mistakes. Reporter fundraising is currently underway for a statue of maya angelou. Kim says why not put it in this statues place. You dont understand it until you see it from someone elses side. Reporter the commission will comment on the matter october 2nd. In order to have the statue removed, there will be a lengthy process as well as how much it would cost to dismantle. In San Francisco, tara moriarty, ktvu fox 2 news. State senator Nancy Skinner of berkeley has introduced new legislation that would strengthen californias hate crime law. She was moved to push for the new measure by the death of Heather Heyer in charlottesville. She was killed when a car rammed into a crowd of people protesting against White Supremacists. The death cant be prosecuted as a hate crime because she doesnt belong to a protected group. Sense a person of color, lgbt or jewish. The bill would change that criteria. It expands the definition so if the hate act is committed against someone who is acting in solidarity with, in support of, in defense of the protected class, then the violence against them would be considered a hate crime. Skinner has also introduced resolutions urging local, state and federal Law Enforcement to use all Legal Options to prosecute hate groups that commit crimes as terrorists. As terrorists. The Sports Network has pulled Asian American broadcaster robert lee from calling the College Football game at the university of virginia. It was made collectively as the Charlottesville Violence was unfolding. That switching out robert lee felt right to everyone involved. The charlottesville protest began as a group of White Supremacists were fighting the removal of a statue of robert e. Lee. Now the network embarrassed itself. Had they done nothing, we won be talking about it. I saw it on twitter and people not being kind to espn. Todays weather will be very foggy. In fact when i was trying to look at my Traffic Cameras this morning, steve, i couldnt see a bunch of them because of the fog. It has cleared for some. If you go over to the hills, you can find sunshine. It will be cooler today. We will take a look at the five day. Today, tomorrow and probably friday will be about normal. And then all signs point towards a good warmup heading towards the weekend. Sunday could be hot. The inland hottest since august 2nd or 3rd. Were back. Hes here. Bob, where have you been . I spent two years in farmington for ten days. Farmington, new mexico. The last time that i saw bob was july 4th in scottsdale. It was 118 degrees. Right. Youve been on a tour. Rock bands would be jealous. I went to the world series. They went to farmington and qualified for the world series and finished second. How about that. Out of 17 teams. Not bad. No. It was great. Number of kids got special awards. A terrific event. What is not terrific is the price of these avocados. The season is just winding down. Okay. Typically during a season, california produces about 400,000 pounds of avocados. This year, theres only 200,000 pounds available. Okay. Were going to go right here. These are haas. Almost all avocados are haas. Named after. Named after rudolph haas who was a mail carrier who thought he could breed avocados and now theyre the most popular in the world. Some people may find these. Where are these from. Peru. Mexico and peru have the majority of the avocados sold in the u. S. About 2 billion pounds a year are consumed by the u. S. Consumer. The big days are cinco de mayo. And the super bowl. Father day of 2016, there was a major heat wave down in the temecula valley. That manifested a year later with the crop. Because avocado trees only have a sixinch root system for water. They were stressed. A lot of people lost their trees. Stress is not good for avocados. Will they get better next year. One year they have a peak. Last year we had 400,000 pounds. This year 200,000. Okay. Im sorry 200 right. Yeah. 200,000. 200million. Thats about 200 million pounds. You havent been here. 2 billion total. 200million in california. They will come down in september a little bit. They should start coming down in the next three weeks as the product from mexico and peru starts to come into the country. Real quick now if you want to store an avocado please dont do this. Dont use a knife. Theres two ways to do it. Slice the avocado. Look how easy that was. Real easy. The easiest way so steve doesnt hurt himself is take asian and get in there and dig it out. The other way that the chefs will do it, they will put the knife in there, twist it and. And then it comes out. Thats why you dont do it that way. Good thing that you didnt cut yourself here. Sure. Lets say i only want half an avocado. Youre going to save the pit. Okay. Put the pit back in the portion that you wont be using. Put a little lemon juice on it and wrap it in a plastic bag or wrap and it should last three days in the refrigerator. If you get a hard avocado and want to speed up the ripening process. Put it in a bag with a banana or apple. They do not ripen on the industry. Only when theyre picked. Thats right. The price should come down in september but until they will then theyre going to go up. The next product on the agenda is apple. Theyre going to go out of sight. Can i ask you a question. I hate when i pay 2 for an avocado. It feels okay. I cut into it and half of it is that weird light gray color inside. Why does that happen. It has the gray color inside. Is there something to look for. No. An avocado will be ripe if it gives to pressure. These are ripe. If you can you can see how it gave to a little bit of pressure there. The one thats are gray means that they were in a very cold environment. Okay. And theyre never going to ripen errorly. Our produce expert is back. Save those avocados for me. There are two with your name on it, gasia. Sometimes its 700 million that you will spend to find one good avocado. Im not an avocado guy. Ill take your share. Lets go. Coming up on mornings on 2 the 9, combining fun with education. Education is fun, right, in the first place. We will be joined by a Family Lifestyle expert with toys that you can buy your children as they head back to school. Parents are worried the 100 million allocated to build the school wont be enough. They worry that overcrowding can lead to problems such as bullying and safety issues on campus. Dublin high is the only high school with 2500 students enrolled. That number is expected to double in the coming years. Kids and paint may be a messy nightmare for some parents. It feels sensational. There are no rules. Do whatever you want. The childrens clinic has a laugh workshop where kids are allowed to smear every color imaginable on the walls and floors. The Program Organizers say it was designed to connect the power of art with those in need. It might promote brain growth and serve as preventative care. I think that it can help with stress that the kids have and Different Things that might bother them. Them being able to have a way of letting it all out and not being in a way of being judged or the rules of you cant do this. Theyre just having fun. I think it is important. Doctors wish they could write a prescription for this type of creative therapy. Children in walnut creek go back to school today. Many children in the bay area are officially back in class. That doesnt mean that the education stops when theyre at home. Were talking about keeping the little ones educated and entertained, arent we . Absolutely. And everything i have here is going to do just that. Lets start with technology because i know a lot of parents are introducing it to their children very young, usually in the form of a tablet. What do you recommend . Theres a lot of time wasting that can be done on the tablet as well. There is. You will love this. This is called epic. This is amazing. The leading Digital Library right now. It exposes them to 25,000 popular books and educational videos. What is great is ive been a teacher. I know when kids choose their own books and have ownership of that, theyre much more apt to complete that. Better comprehence as well comprehension as well. That is great for reading development. If you want to start over here, this is a cool new parenting tool that is actually great forsetting goals for the school year. This is called kudo bands. I recommend this for parents getting ready for school. They are little charms. It is like a sticker chart that kids wear around their wrist. They earn rewards. Extra playtime or a book at night. That is great. Those are kudos bands. We cannot for get our preschoolers. This is elmos world hide and seek. By identity game. What is great is you hide elmo and toddlers and preschoolers listen to clues about where he is and they have to problem solve and follow directions. It grows with kids. It is winning lots of awards. I have to jump inspect and say ill be honest in my family we are very reluctant and slow to introduce tech to our second and third grade boys. The bar is high on how is hide and seek with elmo better than hide and seek with your brother or mother. How is reading on a tablet better than reading a real book.
