We will get more information from our crews there right now. A half hour ago we brought you a new conference from san jose. They announced that a couple of people had been detained in connection with the attack. The firefighters were shot at after leaving a prery on brewery on Taylor Street. They searched jackson and 11th streets. Leigh martinez is live now with an update on the police investigation. Reporter yeah. So first we heard from Oakland Fire Department who say the off duty firefighters were attending an event at the brewery t was at the brewery. And as they were leaving the event, they were confronted by a group with of men. And both were shot. Witnesses say they saw the two victims on the opposite side of taylor on this side of the street right here outside of the Taylor Street market. San jose police now say that they have detained people but theyre still trying to determine if there is more than one suspect. Now, just after 9 30 last night, police were called out to a report of a shooting on the 300 block of Taylor Street. The victims were shot outside of the Taylor Street market. One oakland firefighter who was 30 years old was later pronounced dead at Regional Medical center. The second firefighter, 26 years old, had a single gunshot wound and was in stable condition at valley medical. Oakland firefighters were seen early this morning heading to the south bay in a somber procession. Both men were new to the Oakland Fire Department, just graduated in april and four months into training as probationary firefighters. The brewery held a live music event last night. It is believed the firefighters had attended the event. The headliners spoke to us about the shooting. I was loading my gear in the car and i saw two people laying on the ground and a bunch of people around those two people. Reporter police say the suspect ran from the scene. They had been working overnight with k9 teams and a helicopter searching the area for the shooter. Witnesses tell us they saw San Jose Police take a man into custody early this morning who was hiding in the neighborhood. Now, oakland fire officials and fellow firefighters are visiting the surviving firefighter at valley memorial this morning. He is expected to survive. At this time, San Jose Police say they do not have a motive or know the circumstances at this time which led up to the shooting. Thank you, leigh martinez. Joining us live from san jose. Where we have learned that one american has been killed and another has been injured. However, authorities are not releasing their identities at this time. Heidi tucker tells ktvu she has not heard from her husband since that time. Since they became separated. Family and friends are on social media this morning, hoping to learn about his whereabouts. 13 were killed in the attack and another woman was killed in an attack on the seaside. They also killed five assailants during the assault. Connor powell reports on the search for the suspects and tributes to the victim snooze a moment of silence for the victims of the terror attack here some spain. Victims include people from more than two dozen countries. We have now received word and confirmed the death of one american citizen in the terrorist attacks in spain. There are hubs of thousand hundreds and thousands of them on the streets. There are no barriers to discourage more traffic in pedestrian areas. This was an accident or an attack waiting to happen in many ways. So you know if you are Law Enforcement authorities here, you can be looking for records of who is renting vehicles or who has vehicles. But you cant stop every vehicle is the problem. It seems as those these type of car attacks are much more difficult in many cases impossible to pick up to pick up on beforehand because all it takes is one person as you say renting a car. How much more of a challenge do those attacks pose. I think its going to force City Planners to rethink this. Im surprised even in San Francisco that you had in the intro to the city talking about restricting or doing some things. What they need to be doing in many ways is what you find in other cities that have suffered problems with this, not just vehicles hitting pedestrians but also vehicles used with bombs in them. As truck bombs or car bombs. In other places, one of the tendencies that they have gone to is to use horizontal blocking devices so you can drive your vehicle into it but you have to drive around them. You cant go more than 5 miles per hour. That is very difficult, for example, to hit a pedestrian. So you put that in union square . What is your suggestion. You cant really do that in a place like union square. You can block off Access Points to a place that is a big plaza or square and say no vehicles will be allowed into a space like this with densely packed crowds. When you do that, you have sealed those people inside that make them a different kind of target with not a car but with a bomb in a backpack. Im based in colorado so im going up to wyoming to check it out. That is where the path of total is closest to me. Were excited. We will head out sunday morning. For folks who are lucky enough to be in the path of totality and will see this entire complete Solar Eclipse, for folks who experience that, what what will it be like . I have heard people online expecting this will be kind of a lifechanging experience for them if theyre in that zone. What do you think the experience will be for those folks yeah. Youre right. Anyone who will make the trip or already there by luck thats where they live, they will see fora few short minutes see day turn to night. Stars will come out. You can see planets. Adjoint shadow sweeping around you at 200 miles per hour. It is really spectacular. It is looking into the heart of the solar system. It has affected people for centuries, from ancient myths down to today. If you think it is the work of a god eating the sun, it is a powerful experience. There is so much lure and talk about it. There are actual things to be learned. Scientists are looking at this with a perhaps more serious eye than we are. What do you hope to learn. Absolutely. For many centuries, the miss free of what the sun was not known. Thats one of the things that i talk about. They were still in the 19th century they were trying to figure out what the sun was composed of. We know a lot more about the sun today. Theres still a lot that we can learn by looking at the suns corona, which is the suns atmosphere that you see when the moon blocks the sun. The outer atmosphere of the sun is visible that you cant see the rest of the time. There is a lot they want to learn. This is not the first time that we have seen a whole lot of hoopla over total Solar Eclipse. Back in 1878, it was the great Rocky Mountain eclipse. I was reading at that time people took places of glass and they burned them, kind of darkened them a little bit and watched the Solar Eclipse that way. Tell us about the second go around here and what we know about this Solar Eclipse back in 1878. Sure. Well, one of the things that tourists did there were a lot like today going out to the rockies to see it. But they didnt have eclipse glasses like we do. So they took the glass and coated them with soot. One woman ended up burning her house down because she was so excited to see the eclipse, she forgot to blow out her lamp before going out of the house. A lot of people cut their fingers too. Were lucky to have the eclipse glasses. Theyre a lot safer. Just want to be prepared, dont use the fake ones. Check the nasa website to confirm yours are the good properly manufactured ones. But, yeah, you dont want too look at the sun. Even in an eclipse without the eclipse glasses. Out in california, you definitely want to be looking at the using your eclipse glasses. Can i ask real quick, is it the same its not the same experience i know to watch the partial eclipse like here in california. Is a partial eclipse worth the trouble. Yeah. We begin this half hour with an update on a double shooting last night in san jose that left one oakland firefighter dead and another in the hospital this morning. The two off duty firefighters were new to the Oakland Fire Department. They had been on the force for four months. Both were shot leaving a brewery on east Taylor Street near japan town. Officers searched the area of jackson and 11th just a few blocks away from the original crime scene. We just learned there were in fact five oakland firefighters attending an event at the brewery last night. Investigators say the two victims walked out and were confronted by a group of people and someone opened fire. In just the past hour of mornings on 2 i hope you were with us when we brought you a live News Conference from the San Jose Police department in which the officer announced that they have detained at least one suspect and they are talking to several witnesses. We dont know what the motive or the circumstances surrounding the shooting are. That will kind of reveal itself as we Start Talking to witnesses and we can firm up some of the details. A man suspected of robbing people on campus and threatening an employee happened about 6 00 wednesday night at the Recreational Sports Facility on campus. Police say the man walked into the building and started taking peoples cell tops and wallets cell phones and wallets. With confronted, he said he had a gun and left the building. Anyone with information is asked to give Uc Berkeley Police a call. Sfo making changes to landing protocols in response to a near disaster last month. The pilot of the plane had lined up to land on a taxi way where several planes loaded with passengers were waiting to take off. To help you prepare, we are happy to help ben. Thank you for joining us. Thank you. My dad gave me a few pairs of these for my little boys. You dont even have to have Something Like this. You probably cant get them. Theyre sold out. Tell me how to use foil to protect themselves. If you cant filter the sunlight you can do a pin hole projection. Okay. Do that in a number of ways. I got fancy. You can use aluminum foil. Poke a small hole in it. Okay. I have made a larger piece here. The beam of light that comes out of the hole casts down on a white surface. Im watching what that casts. Im not looking through the hole with my eyeball. Youre looking in the opposite direction. The shadow on the ground. Ask then the spot of light that it produces. It should be a crescent when the eclipse is happening. Were not making pasta this morning. Sadly, no. But we have collander. It is a pin hole projector. Again, seemingly you would use the pin hole projector there. Watch the shadow. Move it in and out a little bit. For every hole in the colander, you will get a crescent image of the Solar Eclipse. It will be multiplied. Yeah. And the pattern. If you like the pattern. You can play around with it a little bit and have fun. Yeah. We have been talking about people seeing t i suggest just taking it in. Not we experience life this way, right. Put the phone down. See it. Look at the real thing. For people who want to take pictures of it or video, i cant would this be harmed . How does it work. Some cameras can be damaged if pointed directly at the sun. Okay. If it is a single a reflex camera, that is probably okay because the light is not hitting the sensor. You have to be careful what youre looking at it. Im looking at it to make sure that ive got it. What will you be doing during the eclipse. We will be open for half of the day. In the oakland hills. We will be streaming the nasa live field from totality as well in our theaters. You must be excited to see ive got second and third graders. It falls on their first day of school. We have talked about science and the earth and the moon. I mean, this is a little boost for science, isnt it. Oh, yeah. I know a number of teacher whos are planning teachers who are planning to open this with their kids. Do you worry about people doing permanent damage to their eyes. I have heard from a lot of eye doctors who are worried about that. I think common sense kind of kicks in. Down here with the partial eclipse, we will see one quarter of the sun peeking through. That makes it less likely we will hurt our eyes or what it means is it is bright enough that people know not to stare at it. Okay. Even if youre up in totality, the only time to look at it is when the sun is completely covered by the moon. Even though you is can stare at the sun doesnt mean you that should. I think common sense kicks in. I hope so. I have a beloved friend named sew fee. She is due to have her baby any day now. Maybe ill have an eclipse baby. Do you believe any of the myths and the lure and the excitement . Do you get brought into that or no. It is fun to listen to the stories. That is a no. Ill keep my mind open.
