Coming up on the 9, is a kiss from someone carrying a virus behind the death of a 3 week old baby girl . Dr. Larry joins us to explain how this could happen and what parents can do to protect their babies and if were being overprotective. A bart passenger is attacked outside of a bart station. And the mayor of richmond is right there to call 911. Why the mayor is dissatisfied with what happened next. Good goes around. And around. And around seed to the oat to the o, on the first day of school schoolin your sister on why. And just how to be cool cool if she hangs, you can show her whats go d good goes around. And around. New febreze fabric refresher with odorclear technology. Cleans away odors like never before. Because the things you love the most can stink. And plug in febreze to keep your whole room fresh for up. To 45 days. Breathe happy with new febreze. Earlier this week on the 9 we told you about a three week old baby in iowa that may have contracted a deadly virus from a simple kiss. The baby may have gotten meningitis caused by the herpesvirus. The same virus that causes cold sores. Doctors suspect she may have caught the virus after a loved one with a cold sore carrying the virus may and touched or kissed the little girl. So many questions. We decided to bring in dr. Larry to make accepts of this story. Because to a parent of a new born, this is your worst fear. Is it possible that this little girl died as a result of a kiss from someone who may not even had a cold sore. It is totally possible. Wow. This virus, you can be symptomatic with a cold sore. But it can also on your hands. It could have been from a kiss. We dont know that. You could get it some other way. Contact through the hands. It doesnt only come from a kiss. I dont think it was transmitted through her mother like in birth. Right. It would be afterwards. It cant be born theyre not born with it. I remember when we had our children, the doctors told us, you know, dont take the baby out of the house for, you know, i think it was a month. I dont remember now. Right. A period of time. And we didnt. We stayed home. No real visitors. Nobody touched the baby for a while. Wow. Thats not real life though. Just for a month. A whole month. Yeah. Dr. Larry, there are all of the opposing beliefs. Keep the baby inside and keep it safe and clean. Versus we live in the real world. If the pacifier drops on the ground, pick it up and dust it off and give it back. Have we become overprotective. For this case, a child when it is first born, the immune system is pretty weak compared to later. If they have a fever in the first 90 days or three months, that is a medical emergency. The first month can be potentially life threatening. I understand to be conservative with this. Keep the baby away, wash hands. Especially the first month. When a kid is five, sure, wipe things off. Or two or one. They get a fever, it is probably a virus. All of of the kids at school have it. It is a big difference because you have more of an immune system. Little babies are very vulnerable and can get sick fast. The kid probably got everything that we have in terms of treatment and still died. What are the first symptoms that people should look for if this indeed happens to their child. If youre talking about enself enself lightis, it is dramatic. It can go fast. The thing that i want people to understand is fever. If your child has a rectal temperature greater than 104 under a month, you need to call your doctor or go to the er. Right away. Can we talk germs more broadly. Rosemary orozco mentioned ante septic, the thing that you squeeze, i cant go to a playground or beach without parents squirting that on their kids hands. Overcleaning, have we gone too far and will that hurt kids down the road. The study came out about kids who play in dirt have a stronger immune system. Right. Thank you. Thank you. I agree with that. I would hesitate to say never let somebody kiss your child or touch them. Hsv is still very rare. One in 500,000 or Something Like that. Im not going to let people stop touching, kissing the baby. Again, at the same time, be careful in that first month, 90 days. And fever in the first month is an emergency. Interesting. Of course when the second baby comes along, a lot agree our threshold is lowered. Right. First baby versus second baby. What is one month of someones life. Im floored. One month in the house. You have kids. Yeah. Thats what we did. They were in the restaurant within two days. We had them out very early and taking them and experiencing mainly for the noise. We wanted them to get used to noise. This is life. We have friends who do just that. And i completely understand it. It is a personal decision. Is there any way to prevent what every parent talks about, i kept him or her as long as i could. The minute they went to preschool or kindergarten, wow, my kid is coming home sick almost every week. That may be good for the child. Is it. Start getting the little colds that you get at preschool. I think we can only protect them so much. You have to release them to the wild. There will be illness out there. You will get sick. Thats what your immune system is for. You can fight it off much it is scary because sometimes bad things can happen. Most of the time everything will be okay. And you have to let them out. Yeah. My kid is under the desk right here. Be quiet, you two. Is that dirt. Thank you for joining us, dr. Larry. We turned to our viewers how do you keep your baby safe and clean. Do you let strangers come in contact with your child . 12 say yes. 88 say no. I would like to read some responses. I tell them if they want to hug and kiss my daughter, they have to hug and kiss me first. That runs them off. The same thing that i do to keep people from petting my dog. No. He is tired and cranky. Most parents say i prefer that you didnt. Get away. I have no problem telling people telling that. Only me in my polite kids. Only my wife and kids can kiss my child. That is from concerned citizen. You can chime in on social media by using ktvuthe9. Authorities are trying to track down a group of teen thats beat up a man near a bart station. It left the victim bleeding in the street. Reporter the mayor telling me by phone this morning that he saw a pair of bart employees who were in the vicinity of the attack. They witnessed the attack and do nothing. That was also a disturbing element to him as well. The mayor wants to try to work to make this area safer. Christien kafton, ktvu fox 2 news. Joe romero has spent a decade filming and interacting with the predator. He will have two specials featured during shark week. Welcome, joe. I know that you started very young with your love for the ocean. And that must that must have just been great that you have this job. It has driven a passion. In fact my father was cautious about me taking these jobs. You loved sharks your whole life. It seems destiny. It put fear in him. This is my biggest dream. This is what i wanted to do when i was a kid. We were talking about how many lenses you have actually lost to a shark. Im going to let me viewers think about that and give the answer at the end of the interview. One thing that i love about your work, i always remember in journalism school, i started out as a photographer. The teacher said dont be afraid to put the camera where it is not supposed to go. You started shooting sharks at night. That is spectacular footage. Yes. What made you do that. We had never seen images them at night. A lot of people were not diving with them at night. We get small windows when we jump in the water, 20, 30 minutes to see them and thats it. I wanted to see them at different times of the day and different periods. Nighttime is one of those as a photographer, complete contrast. Black with all of the color coming at you. The fear nighttime or day, is there any fear in you. More fear that the sharks wont show up. You have a job to do. Being eliminated off the planet as we speak. It is one of those animals that quickly disappearing with out our knowledge. Thats my biggest fear when i get in the water. Joe, with your knowledge of sharks, working with them for so long, you have become a naturalist. So you know a lot about the animals. What is the biggest misconception about sharks. There are more sharks in the ocean than ever. Really what it comes down to is everybody has a camera and a cell phone. They take pictures of encounter. You see more things like that every day. That doesnt mean that there are more sharks in the ocean. If anything, there are less sharks should in the association. A hundred million sharks are killed every year. Thats like three sharks a second. You come facetoface with them. Youre right there next to them. How do you describe that interaction between theyre looking at you. We have a whole week dedicated to celebrating this animal. Everybody is completely enthralled looking at this animal on television. When youre there in person. Yeah. And that shark looks at you and you see its eyeball moving back and forth and it is judging you just like youre looking at them, that interaction between each other is just it is something that i just dont want to go away. Do you remember the first time that this encounter with a shark happened . How old were you . I was five years old when i saw my first like real shark. I had seen sharks on television. Jaws. But then years later, shark week appeared. And it was like this element that would educate the public and the fear from this movie had developed into a fascination for this. And now you can see it. There is no panda week anywhere in the world. This is like a full week dedicated to celebrating one animal and our obsession with it. If anybody did see a shark, the people who do, they fall in love with them. They are a perfect creature. Weve had incidents with kayakers and surfers off of the coast here. We often report and we say shark attack. Yeah. Does that drive you crazy. Sometimes. When you see the word attack in the news. Theyre not hunting us. This hundreds of millions of people go in the water every year. And four to six people are killed by sharks every year throughout the world. Theyre just coming up. If they bite a boat or a canoe or something else, they mistake it for something else. Once they figure out youre a human being, they dont have a interest and swim off. They have a special intuition picks up anything in the water. That could be a boat or human and they dont have hands to reach out what something is. As an animal, it takes a lot to hunt something and like eat it. Just with your face. You know, you have no hands or anything to control it. They have to run up and attack. Everything is done with their mouths. A lot of things are mistaken identity. There are situations that are set up that sometimes are not the best. That is something that i stress to people. Keep fishing away from where beaches are. When youre shooting, youre not in a cage. Sometimes you are. Sometimes you are in a cage. Sometimes youre not in a cage. I prefer not to be in a cage. Being inside of the cage is like being inside of a washing machine. Everybody gets a sense of security but this kang is being jostled around and you get banged around a lot. Before we let you go, one of the episodes that we will see is it crocodile and shark that youre involved with. Yes. One of the most amazing episodes that i have shot. We went to australia and we went in an intel. What we walked away from was amazing. It was like a classic expedition where you go out to find things. We had all of this new technology and all of these new cameras. There were things that we were looking at while we were there that we would look at the scientists and the other guys around me and i would say were the only people on the planet to see this right now and were about to show everyone else. Youre in the middle of the sharks and crocs. You will have to watch the episode. Something that you have never seen before. How many lenses have you lost to a shark. Ive had two cameras taken away. One where i had to chase the shark down to get t most of the time is a glass dome in front of them. They investigate it and feel the electrical signal and they start to bite at it. 18 lenses. 18 lenses. I think 18 in total with repairs and stuff. Wow. You always seem to get the right shots. Congratulations on your career. I appreciate it. Come back any time. Any time. Thank you. Thanks, joe. Coming up next on mornings on 2 the 9, fire up the grill. Folk thats come out here tomorrow can learn all about that. There are all of the whacky type of bikes that we see during pedal fest. We have the tall bike out this morning. This is one example of all of the crazy creative awesome, home made bikes that people will bring out and be riding around. There will be bikes like this maybe not the tall ones but there are shorter ones to try for yourself. Just a real expression of the creative bike culture we have in the east bay. Good times. One of my favorite things i actually have a few. The stunt show is always a good time. Talk about that. Yeah. We have a bmx stunt show. These are the high flying riders that you will see doing flips and great stuff. Oftentimes it is too hot to heat up the oven in the house. Yeah. Dont heat up your house. Do it on the grill. The thing about doing dessert on the grill, do it first. That way you dont have to worry about any kind of weird meat transfer stuff. Meaty, fatty smells. Yes. The good thing is you get that ambiance aroma. You get the spokeyness of the grill. Can i do a nectarine, an app roadway cot ricotta apricot or plum. Go to the Farmers Market and pick out whatever. I can use oatmeal. Oats, butter, brown sugar. Okay. And a little bit of salt and vanilla in there as well. All you have to do is once you put this on the grill, it will take about 60 minutes. A whole hour. A whole hour. Okay. Wow. I leave it i leave it with the top up for about 50. For the last ten minutes, i kind of let it i move it to the coolest side of my grill and let it hang out. Show me your expert grilling. The biscuit that you made is a heavy, dense, delicious, not the light airy angel food business that i have no time for. It is a hybrid between the two. It is almost like a zone. It is light and flakey on the inside because of the butter. But you dont get that weird fluffed artificial texture. Right. We have hand pies that i have done with the strawberries. These like labor intensive. No. You get store bought pie dough and put the berries on the inside. Oh, got it. It is similar to doing the crisp. Everything tastes better with a little bit of whipped cream. Its like you read my mine, olivia. And we have these that are great for the summer as well. This is an egg white and a sugar base. Yes.
